Mashable

     What It Is

Mashable is a well designed website that brings together world digital and social media news and culture. Designed by Pete Cashmore in 2005, Mashable quickly took off, being recognized as a brilliant combination of appealing technology and news. The Goal of mashable is to simply be a “one-stop shop” for social media users.

       What it does

Mashable is an effective way for its users to get world and local news from many perspectives on one website. Cashmore’s goal in creating the site was for people to be able to check out multiple news stories and reactions to those stories from one site. Users can share stories, which adds to the stories put up by the Mashable staff.

Pete Cashmore’s creation shows that in a constantly changing culture, it is necessary for the entrepreneur to adapt to what the consumer wants. He saw that digital news and social media are the emerging dominant force is modern news, and he used that to fuel his business venture.

Who Gives A Crap TP

A company started by three friends: Simon, Jehan, and Danny, “Who Gives a Crap” sounds like a humorous business. Maybe it is, but they realize their goal is serious. There are about 2.5 billion people in the world who don’t have access to a toilet, which is about 40% of the worlds population. These men knew their goal was to provide toilets to those without access around the world, and they were able to come up with a way to do it. “Who Gives a Crap” is now a company that sells toilet paper in order to provide toilets to 3rd world countries in need.

In 2012, they launched their business through crowd funding, and thankfully, people actually “gave a crap.” Simon sat down on a toilet, and refused to move until they had raised 50,000$. After 50 hours, the three friends had finally reached their financial goal. Now, Simon, Jehan, and Danny’s business is a fairly large scale toilet paper provider, offering cheap toilet paper. They donate 50% of their revenue to WaterAid, a company that will build and distribute the toilets in the countries who need it the most.

“Who Gives a Crap” is not just a business with a clever and funny name, they are one with a set and achievable goal. Simon, Jehan, and Danny figured out a way to make profit for themselves and develop a charitable organization. “The Hype Machine”

As a Sophomore in college, Anthony Volodkin was very surprised at the amount of time people spent blogging about music and posting their favorite songs on their blogs. Soon after in 2005, Volodkin launched his business idea ” the hype machine” as a website that connected musicians, bloggers, or just listeners in general.

The Website

Combining about 1500 blogs, Volodkin’s website allows for the most talked about songs to be posted on the home page of the website. From there, you can “love” or “like” a song through your profile. The website organizes a list of the most popular songs for each week, so you can always check out trending music around the world. The site automatically finds posted songs that relate to your “type” of music. These songs can be organized by genre or playlists, much like an Ipod.

Connect With Your Friends

The Hype Machine also allows you to interact with your friends. By “adding” their profile, you can check out their favorite music. You can recommend songs or share playlists with any of your friends that also use the website.

Back to the Roots

Growing up: A Back to the Roots kit.

Back to the Roots

In 2009, Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez were students at the University of California, Berkeley, and were set up to go their separate ways after graduation that spring. Their plans drastically changed when they heard a fascinating lecture regarding the growth of mushrooms in recycled coffee grounds. Although this would have meant nothing to the average student, these two men took this idea and ran with it. Their idea began to take shape in there fraternity house using 10 paint buckets and some used coffee grounds with mushroom spawn. In just a few days, they saw the fruits of their work, the first crop.

Using jsut $5,000 from a business plan competition, Arora and Velez purchased a small warehouse and began “Back to the Roots,” that year. Although it didnt seem like much, this money, they claimed, was like giving them “a million dollars.” After selling their first products to fresh markets, they expanded their business into the manufacturing of “do it yourself” mushroom growing kits.

Now an international business, Back to the Roots distributes their mushroom kits to 2,500 retailers across the globe. Annually, their company recycles around 3 million pounds of coffee grounds, keeping them out of landfills. They used this statistic to prompt large companies to use their product in order to promote an environmentally friendly advertisement. Their business continues to grow today, with about 5 million dollars of profit last year, and an expected increase in profit this year. When asked about their company, Arora said “We’re all growing together. We really want to build a lifetime, generational brand.” It’s interesting that Arora and Velez were able to use an idea from a single lecture they heard as college seniors, and turn it into a “lifetime, generational brand.”

Sean Belnick- BizChair.com

The Start-up

At the age of fourteen, Sean Belnick had only 500$ in his pocket that he made doing odd jobs around his house. Most kids his age might buy video games or 0ther electronics, but Sean Belnick wanted to do something greater with his 500 dollars. Now, at the age of 24, he is worth roughly 42 million$ because of his ability to seek out a problem and solve it using his limited resources. Belnick invested his 500$ in starting a website, BizChair.com, where he sold office chairs from his home. His stepfather, who worked in the office furniture business, advised Belnick to enter this market based on lack of quality office chairs for a good price. Although his business began at a strictly local level, the word spread about BizChair’s solid prices and great quality. Soon, Belnick’s website was able to expand their advertising, and was poised to grow.

Expansion

Over the next decade, BizChair.com grew into a national organization. Belnick’s ability to advertise and sell thousands of chairs with under 100 employees allowed his company to make large profits from selling office chairs. Soon, he expanded his menu of products to include restaurant, school, church, and medical furniture. His annual revenues grew from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions over just a decade.

Belnick’s BizChair.com is an example of how even at a young age and a small amount of money, an innovative idea can really grow into something successful and profitable. As one of the fastest growing internet retail websites in the U.S., Belnick has shown how to attack a problem with an effective solution, and how to change that solution as time goes on.

Budd Seed

Since he was in middle school, Ken Budd has loved to play golf. He thoroughly enjoys the game, and loves to help develop local golf course in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Growing up in the town, he realized that there was a problem prevalent in many local golf courses. The grass, or the turf, on these courses was constantly and bad shape, and in no condition to play a fun round of golf. “Budd Seed,” as he called it, was launched in order to solve this problem through supplying top notch grass seed to the courses, and providing lawn care to each course for a price.

Ken’s business quickly took off due to the need for a grass seed supplier in the city. As his reputation for stable prices and great work grew, so did his business. Budd Seed became the weekly supplier to almost every golf course in Winston-Salem. 20 years later, Ken sold his multi-million dollar business and retired. He still enjoys playing golf on the same courses he used as a kid. Ken Budd’s ability to see a problem in the community of Winston-Salem shows why he is a brilliant entrepreneur and a great businessman.
