Hart Main of Man Cans

Candles are great; everybody loves them, but that has not always been the case for everyone. For the longest time, candles have been something considered only to be enjoyed by girls. However, when a young man named Hart Main made fun of his sister for liking “girly candles”, something changed in his mind that would change his life forever…

When he was just 13 years old, Hart started his own business in an effort to save up for a $1,200 bike, but the business became so much more than he could have ever imagined. After poking fun at his sister, saying that candles were meant for girls only, he came up with the idea to create his own scents that would appeal to a more masculine audience. So, Hart created his own candles with scents such as campfire, bacon, fresh-cut grass, grandpa’s pipe, and more. With a little help from his parents, he created his candles using soup cans, and decided to name his business ManCans, a rather clever play on words that perfectly conveys the company message. Although things started small, with most of the customer base being friends and family, Main began to see some rapid growth in his business endeavor. He began distributing to local stores in Ohio, and now sells his candles in over 150 stores across the country.

The business now grosses over $200,000 annually, and Hart went off to college to study economics at Kent State. Mr. Main also gives back to the community by donating a portion of his profits to local soup kitchens. He even donates soup cans to the local kitchens as well, which interestingly ties into his business model quite nicely!

Hart Main says he is grateful for everything he has learned in this entrepreneurial endeavor, and is excited to see how he can apply it to his life in the future.

HIVED-The Better, Faster Package Delivery

HIVED is a parcel delivery service established in London that makes parcel transportation efficient, convenient, and environmentally friendly. HIVED was co-founded by Murvah Iqbal and Mathias Krieger soon after they had shut down an earlier project called Vanvas, a van-based advertisement company. On September 21, 2020, HIVED received the financial backing it required from Innovate UK, a government innovations agency.

Their goal was to build a broadly-used zero-emission parcel delivery service at an affordable price so that companies and small businesses can reduce their carbon footprint while being able to afford the services.

At the moment, parcel delivery services are using fossil fuels to power their vans, which pollutes the environment in considerable amounts such as reducing air quality and emitting large quantities of Co2. These vans also congest the city and place strain on the drivers. Iqbal explains, “I get very irritated when I see a diesel van accelerating like crazy because you know that the driver’s under so much pressure to make up time. It’s not just the danger; it’s also better economics to not rush. If you rush, chances are you make mistakes. So you might deliver to the wrong address, or the package is chucked in the front yard. If you pay people in a way that they are comfortable spending the time to actually figure problems out, you lose significantly fewer parcels.”

HIVED was created for businesses of all sizes, and the co-founders used their process innovation and tech to create more efficient ways of delivering parcels from the business to the client using bikes, cargo bikes, and e-vans. “With increasing urbanization, the benefits of e-cargo bikes will only increase,” said Krieger. “We have a small fleet right now, but with 30,000 cargo bikes on the road, we could make a huge positive difference to how cities work.”

Iqbal and Krieger demonstrate their entrepreneurial abilities by recognizing the need for better, faster delivery services and combining it with the environmental problem of rising CO2 levels to create a partial yet effective solution to both.

Bringing the Beauty of Nature into Your Home-Dustin Anthony

Who doesn’t love having beautiful plants and flowers to liven up your home? What if it didn’t just flow with your décor, it became it? Dustin Anthony with his company BloomingTables aims “To bring the beauty of the outdoors – indoors.” These furniture pieces are beautifully crafted to show off a planter full of life underneath  that can be used as a functional coffee table, desk, or a beautiful decoration. The design is very simple and easy to use so that even people who don’t have a lot of plant experience will love having this in their home.

What started as a gift to Dustin’s girlfriend soon became a Kickstarter campaign and is now a full business in San Diego. However, things were not very easy for Dustin in running his business. After he made $40,000 dollars on Kickstarter in 2019, the pandemic hit. This resulted in the supply chain that Dustin was a part of becoming crippled. Although this was a set-back for the company, they were pleasantly surprised when business began to boom as people were spending so much more time inside and wanted to bring more life and beauty into their homes.

I think this is a really creative idea as it is a décor piece that people can interact with. Right on their website, BloomingTables describes themselves as being “…an innovative option to incorporate their favorite botanical scenes into their homes. This living furniture line combines beauty and functionality, in a sleek and modern way.”, and I couldn’t agree more. On the website they also go into detail about the several benefits that this table can offer. Beyond growing decorative plants, you can grow microgreens that are super nutritious and can be added to several different foods. They also discuss the additions and features that they are working on for future launches.

I really love this idea and this company for many reasons. This idea to me is truly innovative and can be used in so many different ways. Besides having it as a decoration in a home, this would be an amazing tool in classrooms and teaching kids (or adults) more about growing your own food! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the design of the table, the customization that you can have with it, and the fact that the company is still working on the product and innovating it further.

ManCans! Manly scented candles

Another young entrepreneur out of Ohio is Hart Main. Hart Main is a 13-year old that came up with the idea of manly scented candles. “Why don’t people make candles with scents that everyone likes?” Hart Main asked, while smelling the overly perfumed candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser, he thought about guys who did not want their bedrooms to smell like, lavender soap. Although his sister did not expect him to fully pursue the manly scented candles idea himself, he did, and the idea has turned into a nationwide success. But before this success, before the company started, Harts’ wheels began turning, and the entrepreneur in him began to come out. He saw the opportunity right under his nose, the young entrepreneur combined his passion for helping his community with his interest in making a different sect of candle by donating to local soup kitchens and using the empty cans to hold his extraordinary scents. Main put in an initial investment of $100, his parents put in $200, and they all worked together to develop the candles as a group. Hart and his family work together to craft these handmade soy-wax-blend candles that possess the kinds of familiar smells from around the house that no man (or woman) would turn their nose up at. Hart’s current candles includes scents like dirt, fresh cut grass, sawdust, campfire, pizza, and coffee, bacon, Grandpa’s Pipe, and more. Each comes individually packed in a gift box. Today, ManCans candles are in over 60 stores across the country and have sold about 9,000 units. Main looks forward to improving his business, as well as moving into other entrepreneurial ventures, “I like the fact that I have control over things and can make decisions and see what’s actually happening,” he says.

Sustainable Air Transportation

Wright Electric was founded by Jeffrey Mark Engler to solve the problem carbon emissions by airplanes.  Flying is an essential part of modern transportation, but it can triple a persons carbon footprint.  Wright Electric is working on developing an electric airplane that will have much lower carbon emissions than current passenger jets.  The Wright 1 airplane that is in development will be able to carry 186 passengers, and it will use batteries to power electric motors for propulsion.  Lower carbon emissions will be achieved by using electric power and a more aerodynamic design that reduces drag and makes the airplane more efficient.  Battery powered airplanes are becoming more realistic as a result of research by government agencies such as NASA and the Air Force Research Laboratory that are making batteries more efficient and lighter.  An electric airplane has some additional benefits.  Electric motors are much quieter than traditional jet engines, and the decreased use of fuel will make electric airplanes cheaper to fly.  Wright electric is also designing their airplane so that batteries can be quickly swapped at an airport to allow for a faster turnaround time.

Wright Electric has partnered with experienced airlines such as EasyJet, Jetex, and VivaAerobus to get commercial, operational, and maintenance insight during the design process.  The Wright 1 will not have a very large range at first with 500km or 311mi flights from London to Paris, but it will be able to get up a 1,280km or 800mi range.  The Wright 1 will also have slower cruising speeds than similarly sized passenger jets, but Wright Electric expects this to be fine for the short flights that they will be starting with.  Wright Electric is planning to perform ground tests of its motors in 2021 and flight tests in 2023.  They are hoping to have the airplane on the market by 2030.

Sarah Tulin: A Solution for Air Pollution

As Sarah was walking the city streets on her way to work, a giant puff of bus exhaust filled her longs, burned her eyes, and covered her clothes. Between gasping for air, Sarah Tulin mulled over a solution for the increasing amount of air pollution affecting everyone walking out and about. Oxie was born to help protect people from the abundance of harmful  chemicals flying around in the air. Oxie is the first smart, wearable, air purifier that “purifies your air without masking your smile”. Tulin designed Oxie so that the purifier could easily fit underneath your shirt collar and remain discrete. Tulin had dust masks in mind when pondering how to reduce the amount of pollution we breathe in, but she was displeased by how unattractive and poorly functioning they were.

Not only does Oxie protect people from harsh chemicals, but it also filters out viruses, bacteria, pollen, and other particles that can make humans feel under the weather. This subtle collar filters everything so that humans can live a healthier lifestyle.

Another interesting feature of this device is that it has the ability to monitor everything. Oxie can track how much pollution is being filtered from your air in real time, which can then be tracked and recorded. This research can be used to monitor how serious the problem of air quality changing, and researchers can determine what pollutants are the most common.

I am curious to see how this product takes off. There is still debate whether people will wear this or not, but I can see the benefit of using Oxie. Not only are you protecting yourself, but you are also contributing to the research going towards air quality. Tulin recognized a serious problem and created a solution that is more effective than the other solutions in this market. Also, she adapted her plan to include how to research and monitor air quality, which is important for the world. Air quality purification is not a crowded market, so I am curious to see how successful this product will be, or if a better designed product will take its place.
