Andrew Mason

Andrew Mason is well known as being the founder and former CEO of Groupon but that is not the only thing he has accomplished. Mason grew up in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania and at the young age of 15 started a delivery service called “Bagel Express” which operated Saturday mornings. In 2003 He graduated from Northwest University with a degree in music. Instead of going into the music industry however Mason worked for the entrepreneur Eric Lefkofsky as a web designer. After that a well-known Chicago recording studio called Electrical Audio hired Mason as an intern and later an employee. In 2006 Mason was supported by Lefkofsky to start The Point which was an internet social program designed to organize the boycotting and supporting of different causes. The Point had trouble in the market, so it was changed to what we now Know as Groupon, a website that sells coupons for local businesses. Mason was the CEO of Groupon from 2007 to 2013 when he was fired because sales and profit had gone down. In 2015 Mason founded the app Detour which provided audio tours of major cities, Bose acquired this app in 2018. Now Mason works as the CEO of Descript an audio word processing platform that allows an editor or producers to edit sound files. Now Descript is adding a new feature which allows you to type an audio recording that will be in your own voice without you having to record the audio. Andrew Mason shows the creativity and out of the box thinking that I believe all Entrepreneurs demonstrate.

Duolingo’s Success

Duolingo is the most popular and downloaded language learning app in the world. It has been valued at over $700 million and had revenues of over $40 million in 2018. The company is currently private, but possibly plans to go public in 2020. Duolingo was founded in Pittsburgh by Luis von Ahn, who is the CEO and also a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon.

Luis von Ahn traces his roots back to Guatemala City, where he grew up. Many people there were hungry to learn English so they could land a job in America and live a better life. Language learning software was extremely expensive at the time. Ahn recognized a need for low cost to basically free education that people who did not have a lot of money could use. This is where the inspiration for Duolingo came from. Duolingo aims to not just make learning a new language a hobby, but an everyday activity for people.

Luis von Ahn has been an entrepreneur all his life. As a young boy he figured out a way to bypass copyright laws on video games, and created his own video game exchange, where he would make copies of games and exchange them with new ones that he wanted. Later at Carnegie Mellon, Ahn developed the popular Captcha and ReCaptcha software, which he later sold to Google for tens of millions of dollars. Ahn’s new wealth allowed him the ability to pursue the creation of Duolingo.

Duolingo today has millions of users all over the world, and some schools and universities have adopted the program into their language departments. Duolingo is a great free program that helps people learn. The founder did not intend for Duolingo to be a money making service, but simply wanted people to have affordable access to education. This is inspiring because it shows that as an entrepreneur you do not need to have a business model that is only about making money in order to be successful.

Codie

In today’s digital age, knowledge of computers and coding is becoming increasingly essential. Adam Lipecz recognized this change in society and took advantage of a market that had not yet existed. This led to him co-founding Codie, a toy robot and application used to teach coding to preteens. He describes his invention as “legos for architects”. Kids can use this toy robot as a way to create a programmable dance teacher, an alarm clock, and many more. There are plenty of educational toys on the market, but none quite like this. As important as it is for kids to learn to read, write, and do math, it is becoming just as important for them to understand how to program and code.

Codie works by pairing the toy robot with an application on a phone. Within the application, there is a unique visual programming language, which organizes the code of robotics into blocks. By arranging these blocks together, kids can create real programs, which are then carried out by the toy robot. While playing with Codie, kids get to learn about how computers think and get to know the fundamental programming concepts in a fun and playful way. It is a great way to begin getting kids interested in potential future careers in coding and teaches them a life long skill.

Bird is the Word

Travis VanderZanden was born to improve public transportation which he is now revolutionizing through the foundation of Bird-a company that rents electric scooters in cities through an app. Growing up in a single mother home, he often went with his mom to work which in his case was the bus stop. She was a Valley Transit bus driver in Appleton, Wisconson for over 30 years. It was during those times riding on her bus that VanderZanden first identified problems with the wait time, traffic, parking, and so on in the transportation realm.

Although the roots of his most recent innovation were planted very early on, there were many steps in between then and his foundation of Bird. Always possessing the determination and drive to succeed, VanderZanden worked hard for his education, started a couple short-lived companies, and made it high up in the rankings of other businesses before his big breakthrough with Bird in 2016. His first two startup attempts were QikCom (2008), an enterprise communication app, then Cherry, a car-wash app he started in 2011. Cherry was bought by Lyft where he took his turn as COO. After a fallout, VanderZanden was picked up by their rival, Uber, as Vice President of Driver Growth. After a twisted mess of lawsuits between the companies over his switch, Vanderzanden left in 2016-the year his breakthrough idea came about.

Travis VanderZanden (founder) riding a Bird

Planted by childhood experiences with his mother, the idea of Bird culminated with another family experience when his daughters wanted to keep riding their scooters even after receiving bikes for Christmas. This struck him with the idea of scooters for adults which snowballed into Bird. VanderZanden’s whole goal with Bird and whatever he has in store for the future is centered around minimizing the number of cars on the road and making public transportation more accessible. Bird is so revolutionary it has shaken cities and rattled local governments as they react to this radical change in travel which the laws of the road were not prepared for. Bird certainly has obstacles to overcome with educating the public and ensuring safety, but this is to be expected with such a major innovation. This endeavor has incredible potential shown by the annual revenue at upwards of $100 million within the first 14 months-a faster takeoff than even Airbnb and Uber!

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Instagrams Original Owners

Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger are the co-founders of one of the most widely used social media platforms today. Although many people probably don’t know who they are, they are the men behind Instagram. Prior to beginning their work on Instagram, both of these men lived highly respectable lives. Kevin Systrom was a part of the team who created Twitter and spent a few years working with Google.  To say that he has experience with technology would be an understatement. Mike on the other hand did more of the engineer work prior to beginning Instagram and his knowledge for engineering would come in very handy in the long run, as he would be in charge of all of the engineering behind the app. The two men met while they were attending school at Stanford University. Kevin says that the idea behind the app was to create a new and improved way of communicating with one another. If you have used Instagram since it was officially launched in 2010, you would know that significant changes have been made since then. In recent years the addition of the Instagram story, Close Friends story and smaller changes such as design have been implemented to make sure that the app stays ahead of the trend.

Last year the two men officially stepped down from their positions as co-owners of the company, after selling the company to Facebook in 2010. The reason behind this was because of supposed disagreements with Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook. Disagreements on the layout and design of the app was what let the co-founders to step down. Despite their departure, Instagram is still one of the greatest social media apps to exist, and Facebook can not catch up. The younger generations are being drawn to Instagram and have no desire to have  a Facebook account. Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger have an incredible success story. The fact that their idea for Instagram is still spreading and growing in popularity even though they are no longer in charge is awesome. They completely changed the idea of communication and created something that at its prime was unlike anything else that had been previously made. Sometimes being a good entrepreneur means taking risks and thinking outside of the box, and these to men are the perfect example of that.

Ben Pasternak – Flogg

At the age of fifteen, Ben Pasternak developed an app called Impossible Run. He began developing the app during his science class in high school. The app’s purpose was to test the user’s reflex reaction times using geometry. Impossible Run was downloaded 1.3 million times, which rocketed the app to the top of the Apple App Store. After the app gained this traction, many Silicon Valley investors reached out to Pasternak about the possibility of developing some of his other app ideas.

One year after releasing Impossible Run, Ben raised $1 million to begin development on a buying/selling app called Flogg. He wanted to aim the app at teens, so he combined the concepts of Tinder and Ebay into one application. One simply swipes to purchase items on the app. This idea came from seeing many of his teenage friends buying and selling items using Facebook groups.

Ben Pasternak now lives in New York City, where he runs his $2 million application company. With the success of Flogg, Ben was able to hire seven employees, all of whom are under the age of 35. What started as a fun activity in school has evolved into an innovative application development company. Ben’s ideas can serve as a great inspiration to a young entrepreneur.

Amber Venz Box: Turning “Likes” into Dollars

Amber Venz Box has taken the fashion-tech industry by storm while being a mother, wife, and successful business woman all at the age of thirty.  The Dallas native has turned photos on social media into a way for style inspirations to make money. Mulling over the idea with her husband, at the time boyfriend, the two created an online website called RewardStyle with an affiliated app called LIKEtoKNOW.it. This company connects retailers with social media users so that people can easily find and purchase an outfit they saw in someone’s post. This new way of selling and shopping has seen one billion dollars worth of success and is growing. Box’s idea began before Instagram dominated social media platforms, which proved to make this company difficult to start.

RewardStyle was born from Amber’s own pain when was struggling for money as a twenty-two year old living in Dallas. Amber had her own consulting business where people would sign up and pay for a fashion consultation. She also ran a personal blog that kept up with her daily attire and style. Amber realized that she was losing money because people were just buying what she was blogging about instead of scheduling a consultation, and at the time money was her focus. It was then when she began crafting her idea to create a platform that would make her money, make retailers money, and make customers’ shopping experience easier.

It wasn’t a simple process, however, because Amber Venz Box ran into trouble trying to get large retailers to notice her and take the time to listen. There were many times when retailers would tell her there is no budget to work with bloggers because they mostly focus on celebrities and magazines. Amber also saw problems arising in her marriage because their opinions about running the business were different. With great persistence and patience, Amber was able to close a deal with a smaller retailer who saw an increase in revenue after working with her company. This brought the couple closer together, and they are now a strong business duo. Today, Amber is working with over 4,500 retailers who pay commission to users promoting their merchandise, which leads to sales for the company right from the picture.

Hearing the persistence Amber required to get her company running echoed what we have been talking about in class and with the quest speakers. Start-up companies can’t be successful unless you want it and adapt your strategy for the market you are trying to pitch to. Sometimes failure is regardless, but we should never give up after a few failed attempts. Amber was able to solve her own pain, but she also solved the pain felt by different markets. In other words, Box took her passion for style to create a new piece of technology that has changed the fashion industry.

The Men Behind Pinterest

Pinterest is a widely used app and website that allows you to get inspired and find ideas for things to bake, make, wear and use! The idea for Pinterest first came to Ben Silbermann in his years post graduation from Yale. In 2009 the project to build Pinterest officially began, but the app itself never took off running until a year or so late. The phrase “patience is key” comes to mind when thinking about the beginnings of this app, and I think Silbermann would agree. Flash forward to the present, Pinterest is currently worth 1.5 Billion dollars, and is used in several countries all over the world namely the US and Asia. The creators of Pinterest are constantly coming out with new ways to improve the app and cater to the interests and desires of the users. With the most recent update being the ability to purchase things off of their app, Pinterest is now becoming a competitor with online shopping sites. According to an article about the app Pinterest recently passed up Facebook in terms likes gained from adds and promotions. In that same article Silbermann makes a point to recognize the hard work that he and his co-founder Evan Sharp had to put in along with the patience and trust that something would come of it eventually. Along with that he says that it is important to realize there is more to life than the project you are working on and it is good to think about those things in addition to whatever your work might be. It seems as if Silbermann has a good understanding of the necessity of a good work/life balance and how not having too much of one or the other can ruin a person and cause them to burn out. It is unclear what the future holds for Pinterest, but there is hope and motivation to continue impacting the world in a positive way through this app.

Beaux and Paws – 12 year old makes bow ties for a cause

Meet Darius Brown – a 12-year-old entrepreneur with a passion for bow ties and helping animals find their forever homes.  It all began back in 2017 when Darius was watching hurricanes Harvey and Irma on TV.  As homes were destroyed, so were pets’ lives.  Shelters became overcrowded and began to consider euthanasia as an alternative.  Darius saw this need and decided to do something.  He began sewing bow ties for the shelters to put on their animals in hopes of making them look cuter to prospective adopters.  This would help animals find a home and free up the system for new animals who would inevitably come in.

Later in 2017, he created “Beaux and Paws” to reach a larger audience.  He began making his custom bow ties for both people and pets and donating a portion of each profit to the ASPCA.  His additional GoFundMe has allowed him to visit other cities around the U.S. and volunteer his services as local shelters, helping even more pets to find a loving home.

Darius’ commitment has gained him national attention and he has appeared on NBC, the Rachel Ray Show, and has even received a letter from former President Barack Obama.

His story is particularly amazing because of his own struggles.  When Darius was two years old, he was diagnosed with speech delay, comprehension delay, and fine motor skills delay.  With the help of his mother and sister, he overcame these challenges by learning to sew, and today he hopes to one day attend Standford and launch his own clothing line.
