Bear Mayer- Bruce Bolt Batting Gloves

Bear Mayer was just 16 years old when Bruce Bolt became a reality. He was a full-time high school student and baseball player. He was searching for ways to make money, but didn’t have time to get a job with such a full schedule. The only potential way he could get a job was if he quit baseball, and that just wasn’t an option for Mayer. He asked his dad for advice, and he told him to start a company. Mayer was very lost with where he should start, but then it hit him… Batting Gloves. The name Bruce Bolt came from his grandfather named Bruce who was struck by lightning twice, but somehow survived. He started making gloves out of his garage in Austin, Texas. From there the brand shot off and grew rapidly. Five years later players like Jeff Mcniel in the MLB wear Bear’s batting gloves. But what made Bruce Bolt different? Everyone knows there are a million different options for batting gloves out there. Mayer talks about how when he was playing baseball his batting gloves would always rip and get worn down. So, he makes Bruce Bolt batting gloves with “100 percent Cabretta leather” which is made from the skin of sheep that grow hair instead of wool. Mayer calls it “the best leather in the world” and prevents tearing. So, what makes Bruce Bolt different is its durability. The gloves also allow for extra padding to prevent injuries in players hands. Today, Bruce Bolt has arm sleeves, pants, sliding Mits, and more. It has grown so far beyond batting gloves as customers love the designs and colorways of the brand. I personally love Bruce Bolt myself which is why I chose to write about Mayers story. I own my own pair of Bruce Bolt batting gloves, and they are great. It is truly inspiring to see that even with a bunch of huge competitors Mayer found a way to innovate and build a brand in something he loves.

The BRUCE BOLT Story

Hailey Hardenbrook – JoyPins

Hailey Hardenbrook is a young girl who decided she wanted to start a business where she could use her creativity and spread joy to those around her. This is what led her to JoyPins. The business started out with just her and her mom, creating beautiful pins to sell to friends and family, but then the response to these pins was much greater than they were expecting. Over time, the business has grown into a larger operation, with multiple of Hailey’s friends working as “employees.” On top of the usual business orders, Hailey carried out a whole fundraising effort to provide pins and handwritten notes to kids at their local hospital.

Hailey had a drive to do something that would impact the people around her, which is an incredibly important thing for an entrepreneur to have. Something she believed in was that every time you fail you learn something new, so you should keep trying. This is a simple way of explaining prototyping, which is another very important thing for entrepreneurs.

Overall, Hailey is a beautiful example of a young entrepreneur and JoyPins succeeded in doing exactly what she wanted it to; inspire creativity and joy in others.

Bearbottom Clothing: Robert Felder

Robert Felder serves as a wonderful example of a young entrepreneur. On a trip to Bangladesh in 2012, Felder was faced with the devastating realities of

clothing production in India. Though still a high school student, Felder began to devise the clothing brand Bearbottom Clothing as a solution to fill the void of quality jobs and basic necessities like clothing. In 2014 Felder launched his brand and immediately gained significant traction on account of Bearbottom’s sustainability and heart-warming mission. His mission was to produce sustainable menswear that was also ethically made. He planned to create this impact by donating a school meal and clothing to children in Bangladesh for every purchase made. He was extremely successful in creating this impact as he has now donated over 700,000 meals and 100,000 pairs of shorts to Bearbottom partner communities. This is incredibly inspiring to me, as Felder used his creativity and innovative mind to love people well. Everything about Bearbottom is ultimately driven by a desire to create a positive impact in communities that are in need. What a wonderful mission and quality product.

Frasier Lipton: Crafting a Big Impact Through the Little Things

Frasier Sterling began as a small gem in Frasier Lipton’s apartment, a mere side hustle Lipton gradually scaled, using materials of increasing quality and quantity, as her customer base grew beyond her expectations. In remarkable timing, she found herself “working until 2 am for years to keep up” with the demand for her products; according to Forbes, Frasier Sterling has “grown over 100% YoY [year on year; annually] since inception.” She realized she needed to scale up her production methods—and her confidence in the business’ success—when the flow of business “hit an inflection point” around 2015 “and wasn’t manageable anymore.”

Two years later, when Frasier Sterling had long lined the shelves of major retail distributors, Lipton noticed that retailers took advantages of such dependent businesses and recognized a landslide that could occur to her own business when other brands such as Nasty Gal filed bankruptcy. She responded by shifting Sterling into a direct-to-consumer (DTC) brand, distributing products directly to customers online.

Lipton has been driven by the vision of creating jewelry akin to the candy-bracelet and dainty charm-necklace wonderland central to most young women’s childhoods, expressing that she loves to “make pieces Bella and Gigi Hadid, Sofia Richie and Madison Beer wear but everyone else can also afford. I try to keep Frasier Sterling light, fun and feel good — I always say if it can be described with an emoji, I know it’ll be a hit!” Lipton has kept this centrality in the Web, investing in online advertising as opposed to in-person campaigns and functions, a strategy which aligns to Lipton’s target market of the current ‘net-engrossed generation.

Regarding her view of the success of Frasier Sterlig, Lipton harkens back to the brand’s prioritization of customer feedback in every step of the business’s trajectory, stating of her customers that “they’re so interactive, vocal and always telling us what they like and don’t like. We know our customers so well and really lean on them when it comes to product design, collaborations, the type of content we are putting out and even the deals we run — and I think this a big factor in why our retention rate is so high compared to industry standard.”

As a recent facet of this trajectory, Lipton has striven to tune in to the voices of young women beyond her customer base, partnering with nonprofit Girls Inc. to offer mentorship to young women in impoverished conditions, driving positive growth in people’s lives at a young age and ensuring that bright and innovative women like Frasier Lipton have the opportunities to act on their motivations and fulfill their dreams as well.

Billie Eilish, a Genre-Defying Musician

Billie Eilish holding several awards

Billie Eilish wearing one of her odd outfits and holding a trio of trophies.

Billie Eilish began her career in music when she was only fourteen years old, making a splash with the single Ocean Eyes. It was uploaded to SoundCloud to be listened to for free by anyone, and within only a few weeks it had accrued a million plays. Billie Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, rejects many of the standards for what a billboard topping artist can look and sound like. Eilish has a unique sense of style, frequently matching baggy and brightly colored and patterned clothes with large and eccentric jewelry. She is inspired by Pop, Industrial, EDM, and Jazz, among other music genres. The result is something timeless and innovative, what some call a whole new genre. Much of her songs and lyrics which are now trending internationally were first written in her home in collaboration with her brother. (He releases music separately as part of a band called The Slightlys.)

Billie Eilish is a very creative person. Eilish speaks in an interview with Noisey about how she gets many ideas from her strange dreams. She was homeschooled, enjoying horseback riding, dance, and singing. In her youth, she was a fan of Anime, specifically the movie Spirited Away. Billie Eilish has an impressive record when it comes to acclaim, trophies, and awards. She has had her music appear in 13 Reasons Why and Barbie (2023). She is the youngest person to win the Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year awards at the Grammy’s. Though her career has been highly successful, it has not been a very long one. As of yet, Eilish has only released three studio albums over eight years of music making. She’s just twenty-two years old currently, and has the potential to be a mainstay in the Pop music world, continuing to bring new, dark combinations of sound onto the billboard charts. She can be an example to us all that if you pursue your ideas (no matter how strange) with enough passion and vision, you can find an audience. Put yourself out there, and share your ideas!

Rajia Abdelaziz: Co-founder of InvisaWear

Have you ever been in a scary situation like walking back to your car at night and then someone jumps out of their car and starts to approach you? Well, this happened to cofounder Rajia Abdelaziz after a night out during college. She was walking back to her car during the night after an event at college and a car full of guys stopped and started catcalling her and one even got out of the car and started walking towards her. After surviving this scary night, she realized that she didn’t have a lot of time to call for help using her phone and that all the panic buttons on the market weren’t fashionable or subtle. So, what did she do with this information? She created her own jewelry line selling fashionable and everyday accessories that have safety devices disguised underneath. Her product, InvisaWear, was soon founded with the help of her co-founder Ray Hamilton.

Star Burst Charm Necklace

InviaWear was made with the intent of keeping people safer, especially when we’re in tough situations and we can’t access our phones to call for help. Rajia wanted to make the world a safer place to be in, and didn’t want other people to suffer when they needed help during difficult situations. Statistics show that around 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 7 men get attacked at some point during their life. That’s a lot of people who get attacked, which caused such a spark that InvisaWear has been featured on ABC News, CBS, Good Morning America, and WBZ. InvisaWear has also made national headlines for helping to save a young woman’s life when she was in a car accident. There are so many other success stories about InvisaWear saving other people’s lives, and this was all thanks to Rajia Abdelaziz after she realized that there was a need for more safety panic buttons. Rajia’s company doesn’t just sell jewelry, she also sells pepper sprays, and other self-defense products to keep others safe. InvisaWear believes “that everyone deserves to feel safe and secure”, and Rajia did just that! You can check out her website and shop here!

Martinez Brothers – Are You Kidding Socks

Brandon (17) and Sebastian Martinez (15) are the founders of the sock-selling business, Are You Kidding Socks. Their business sprouted from Sebastian’s obsession with fun, patterned socks when Brandon was 8 years old and Sebastian was 6. In 2014, Sebastian started designing his own socks and, with the help of their mom, had them manufactured professionally. Their company has sold well over $1 million worth of socks and continues to grow as they reach more and more of the sock market.

Their purpose for their company now is to help grow awareness for local and national charities like Stand Up to Cancer, Autism Speaks, Amigos for Kids, and more. Their sock designs themselves raise awareness for many conditions and illnesses like pediatric cancer, autism, and breast cancer. They are now in partnership with 13 charities and work every day to make socks that help raise money for people in need.

These kids didn’t come up with a unique, problem-solving product that changes how we live day-to-day. No, their innovation was how they designed their business and their purpose behind it. What started out as just a six-year-old coloring sock designs for fun has now turned into a massive non-profit business that supports many different causes and seeks to change lives for the better. They inspire me with their passion for kids and people with illnesses, mental handicaps, special needs, etc. to look for ways I can support and give back to the community that serves me. They have also shown that you don’t have to make a life-changing technological breakthrough to have an impact on people.

Audrey McAlister: Sunrise Hill Boutique

SunriseHillBoutique Etsy Header

Audrey McAlister is eighteen years old and started a polymer clay jewelry business when she was sixteen.  When she was ten, she would make food for her dolls out of clay.  When she was sixteen, she found some old polymer clay and wanted to express that same joy, passion, and creativity she had when she was younger.  When she looked on Etsy, she found people were making food out of clay and into jewelry pieces.  I met Audrey over the summer at a camp.  She has so many skills and is always trying to improve her business and connect with customers.

Audrey uses Instagram to promote and advertise her Etsy store.  She offers unique deals and offers.  For example, around her birthday she offers a “Birthday Sale,” where she offered eighteen percent off the week of her eighteenth birthday.  Audrey also works to connect to her customers.  Most of her demographic are Christians, so she would post a Bible verse on Sundays.

She is not driven by the profits, but rather the joy of making something beautiful and reliving the fun she had doing this once at ten years old.  Audrey’s efforts demonstrate her ability to empathize with her customers and the ability to adapt.  Her advertising is appealing to her demographic and helps to draw in sales.

Her creativity is inspiring.  Each of her designs are unique and handcrafted; she pays attention to even the minuteness of details, and ensures her customers are receiving the best product she can produce.  I am not artistically talented like Audrey is, but I can empathize with my customers like she does.  I learned that the work can be primarily for the joy of it.  She loves making this jewelry and continues to do it because of this love.

Entrepreneur and High Schooler

The Gen Z entrepreneur who I discovered is a young women named Destiny Snow, raised by business owners she started a makeup business at just 15 years old.

Destiny Snow :: millennialentrepreneurs.com

While covid 19 hindered many from living the life they wanted, Snow didn’t let it stop her. Covid pushed her to find new opportunities for her business. She discovered early on that she needed to identify the target market for her products instead of trying to sell to family and friends. She jumped on the growing use of social media for business growth and learned how to sponsor people and companies who attracted the type of audience who she was looking to sell to.

Setting a good example for our declining society, Snow said she forced herself to learn and read about marketing so that she could implement what she learned along with her passion into her business.

Snow not only has started this business, successfully rolled with the punches but also aims to teach other young people today about entrepreneurship and marketing skills. She has done this through writing and releasing E-books and becoming a social media influencer.

It’s no wonder that Snow succeeded so well in the business industry because her mother, she says, is a successful business owner. Snow advises finding a model who you can be inspired by and who shows you how to succeed in your area. For Snow, this was her mother.

For me, the thing that’s one of the most impressive about Snow’s story is how she educated herself on how to succeed using marketing. She read books and described her house as looking like a library because of all the material she read to learn and continues to learn. Snow’s story is inspiring, and it continues to grow. She’s an example of what each of us is capable of.
