Zandra Beauty

Zandra Cunningham is an 18-year-old female entrepreneur who started her creative business journey at an even younger age. When Zandra was nine years old, she asked her parents to buy her lip gloss but after repeatedly being refused she decided to make her own lip gloss. Although her business idea started from wanting something she couldn’t have, Zandra ended up building a successful beauty products company. Her story shows that there is sometimes value and success hidden in places that were previously off limits, in her case, not being allowed to have lip gloss. After young Zandra figured out how to make lip gloss, she started to take interest in making other beauty products. Zandra now creates fully plant-based makeup and beauty care products that are healthy for the environment and for skin. She also has gained the astonishing title of one of the youngest millionaires in America. Additionally, Zandra is driven by a mission to teach other young girls about her entrepreneur journey and help to show them how to be confident and appreciate their own inner beauty. Zandra is dedicated to creating skin care that is made from natural products and is gentle for skin and does not contain any unwanted chemicals. On her website you can also shop products by scent giving customers the option of buying a collection of products that are all the same scent. Zandra’s website offers a lot of diversity, and you can buy hair, makeup, and skin care products from her. All of her products are designed with fun colors and fonts, and they all have encouraging, or positive messages written on them. Her website also has the option of buying gift bundles or packages that would be perfect for a birthday or Christmas gift for a teenage girl or mom. Zandra’s entrepreneurial story highlights the value in exploring options that others say no to. Her story also displays the importance of starting a business idea from something you are passionate about and being driven by a desire to help or teach other people about the product or service you are passionate about.

Entrepreneur and High Schooler

The Gen Z entrepreneur who I discovered is a young women named Destiny Snow, raised by business owners she started a makeup business at just 15 years old.

Destiny Snow :: millennialentrepreneurs.com

While covid 19 hindered many from living the life they wanted, Snow didn’t let it stop her. Covid pushed her to find new opportunities for her business. She discovered early on that she needed to identify the target market for her products instead of trying to sell to family and friends. She jumped on the growing use of social media for business growth and learned how to sponsor people and companies who attracted the type of audience who she was looking to sell to.

Setting a good example for our declining society, Snow said she forced herself to learn and read about marketing so that she could implement what she learned along with her passion into her business.

Snow not only has started this business, successfully rolled with the punches but also aims to teach other young people today about entrepreneurship and marketing skills. She has done this through writing and releasing E-books and becoming a social media influencer.

It’s no wonder that Snow succeeded so well in the business industry because her mother, she says, is a successful business owner. Snow advises finding a model who you can be inspired by and who shows you how to succeed in your area. For Snow, this was her mother.

For me, the thing that’s one of the most impressive about Snow’s story is how she educated herself on how to succeed using marketing. She read books and described her house as looking like a library because of all the material she read to learn and continues to learn. Snow’s story is inspiring, and it continues to grow. She’s an example of what each of us is capable of.

Kylie Cosmetics

Kylie Jenner, a very successful millennial entrepreneur, used her social media platforms, as well as her fame through the show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” to advance her networking. Because she had a large platform to begin with, her cosmetic business launched quickly and successfully. Since her early teens, Kylie and her sister, worked alongside the retail store, Pacsun to create a clothing line that teenage girls, specifically, would enjoy. Building off of that experience of reaching teen girls through retail, Kylie started up a cosmetic brand that was launched in 2015 and took off because of her massive fan base. Because of her great interest in fashion and makeup, Kylie was very successful in her business. Creatively, Kylie came up with different names for the makeup in her brand such as: Kyliner, and Kyshadows. Along with coming up with creative names for her products, she also created tutorial videos using her snapchat platform to explain different makeup routines and products. A critical and interesting piece to Kylie’s story as an entrepreneur, is the fact that when she began creating her business, she chose to begin to set herself apart from her family by separating herself from them on special platforms in order to make a name for herself to expand her business success. Kylie is a brilliant millennial entrepreneur because she saved money and built revenue by not spending on advertising but rather used her media platforms to spread word of her business. She uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to formulate videos and tutorials about her business and products. By using social media as her main source of marketing, she can reach millions of people and therefore maintain a large fan base while also maintaining a very successful business. Kylie Jenner is a great example of a millennial entrepreneur because she strategically uses her social media platforms and fan bases to launch and maintain her business.

Zandra Cunningham – Zandra Beauty

When Zandra Cunningham nine, her father wouldn’t let her buy more lip balm because of the harmful skin-damaging chemicals found in it. So Zandra made her own. Almost a year later, in 2010, Zandra launched a brand called Azariah’s Innocence, and at age 10, sold her own lip balm and body shea butter at the local farmer’s market.

As business grew and the brand expanded, Zandra renamed her brand to Zandra Beauty. Her brand still would sell lip balm made with natural ingrediants, but now she would sell more things than lip balm and shea butter, such as make up remover and face washes. As Zandra puts it, the brand motto is “No icky stuff!”

Now at age 21, Zandra has a net worth of $500,000. Her brand has expanded to making over 40 natural skincare products, all of which are not tested on animals. Not only did Zandra win awards such as the Etsy Open Call Golden PO, BE Teenpreneur of the year nominee (2016), and Small Business Administration Youth Entrepreneur of the year (2017), but she has also been featured on talk shows and other channels such as Nickelodeon.

A few words of advice Zandra has given are “be confident” and “networking is key.” The reason why Zandra’s story is inspirational is because of how young she was when she started her business, yet she wasn’t afraid of conquering the world with her skincare products. Zandra’s attitude is part of why she is such a successful entrepreneur. You can’t be afraid to change the world.

Clean Skin with Rosen Skincare

Jamika Martin, the founder and CEO of “Rosen Skincare”, broke into the beauty market as an entrepreneur when she was studying as a junior at UCLA. The reason she began formulating this product was simply because she dealt with acne and nothing seemed to help. Martin is quoted to say, “At that point in time I was really just trying to figure out what I was going to do about my skin,” ‘Martin shared.’ “I had these breakouts and going back to that acne care aisle at Target was super disappointing. It was the same products I shopped 10 years earlier.” She wanted to create a new product that would solve her problem. So, this idea began as a dorm room venture to solve her own problem, and it turned out to be a successful business that seeks to help all those dealing with acne. She started selling it in a small shop in her hometown in California, then she was chosen as 1 of 10 entrepreneurs to be placed in an accelerated program for their businesses after she completed her undergraduate degree. As this began, she became serious about Rosen Skincare. She began using Instagram as her main marketing platform and that really took off until this product was accepted into Urban Outfitters where it is sold even now. Additionally, it is sold on the online Nordstrom store. Lastly, Jamika Martin explains that the pandemic did not hinder the business but rather helped it grow because her main selling platform is online and because of mask mandates more people were dealing with acne issues which raised her customer profile, as well as, allow her to hire more employees which provided more jobs for people during a hard season.

Sixteen Going on Thirty

Mya Furbert-Jacobs, a sixteen-year-old in Bermuda, has always had a passion for cosmetics and skin care.  However, many skin products are ironically bad for your skin.  Mya also hated that sticky, gooey feeling of having lipstick on your lips.  This did not stop her love for cosmetics though.  She took the entrepreneurial approach and decided to start her own makeup company.

She started with a simple lipstick that moisturizes your lips and doesn’t give that sticky feeling.  After her lipstick was successful, she moved on to other makeup and skincare products.  Mya competed in the youth division of a rocket pitch competition in Bermuda, and won second place.  Much of Mya’s inspiration comes from her grandmother who helps her find recipes for her products.  Her recipes include mostly natural ingredients such as: oatmeal, sugar, milk, and some witch hazel nut.

Mya understood that everyone’s skin type is different, so she interviewed her friends and customers to see how the products worked on them.  With this information, she asks her customers some basic questions to help them find what product is best for them.

One of the challenges Mya has faced with starting her own business is finding the time in her schedule.  Apart from running a business, Mya is in school, participates and a cheerleader, and works a part-time job.

Mya said, “The most important skill to have as an entrepreneur is the ability to try, and never give up. Businesses and entrepreneurs have their ups and downs, and it is vital to stay focused and never give up on a dream you believe in.”  This beautifully sums up what makes someone an entrepreneur: being willing to fail, but pushing through it.  Starting a cosmetics company at sixteen is a very risky endeavor, but Mya pushed through and ultimately succeeded.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty has taken the world by storm for years now. The 32-year-old has made her presence known in the music world, the business world, the black community, and so on. She went from pop star to philanthropist to business-woman very abruptly. She was born in Bridgetown, Barbados and left when she was 16 years old and moved to the United States of America. Rihanna became popular in the music industry in 2005 at age 17 years old. She started her company called Fenty Beauty in 2016 (at age 28) which sells a variety of makeup products that cater to many different ages and cultures of people. Fenty Beauty originally started in a collaboration with Puma and then branched off and joined LVMH’s beauty brand Kendo. One of the main things about this company that caught the eye of consumer’s was that the brand offered 40 different shades of foundation. This feature of the company alone allowed for people to start viewing it as a culturally diverse company because it offered a shade of foundation for essentially every skin color/type there is which other makeup brands have failed to do in the past and to this day. Rihanna is extremely adaptive, innovative, etc. considering that she saw an area that was lacking and aimed to fix it and bring something new to the table that would appeal to many different groups of people. She is now known as the richest female musician and has grown her net worth to $600 million. In relation to who she is as a person and her values, she has been an advocate for equality across races and for women’s rights as well. She inspires me in so many ways seeing that she is extremely talented and has accomplished so much in so many different areas which shows how diverse her abilities are.

Selena Gomez: Rare Beauty

Rare Beauty - Only at Sephora - YouTube

As many of us know Selena as a successful musician and actress, her skills go far beyond the talents seen in her well known movies or songs. Recently, on September 3rd of this year, Selena released her own cosmetics line named, Rare Beauty. As a makeup and skincare enthusiast myself, I was intrigued to read about her new brand. After some research through the Rare Beauty site and watching reviews, it is clear that Selena made a statement with her new line. With the platform that Selena had already had, she was able to spread awareness of Rare Beauty quickly and began selling on the brands site as well as exclusively being sold at Sephora, online and in stores.

When researching more about her new brand, I began to realize several aspects in her mission behind Rare Beauty that prompted me to write about her for the blog post. Her entrepreneurial mindset is very evident in all she does, especially the thinking behind Rare Beauty. Selena is very passionate about her service and commitment to the communities around her. Selena has opened up throughout the years to the media about her health journey including physical and mental health and hopes to continue to use her voice and actions to make an impact on this community. A large part of the mission behind Rare Beauty is that she wants to be able to raise awareness of mental health and provide impoverished communities with the resources needed in this area.  She plans to do this by every sale of Rare Beauty made, one percent will be donated to raise money for a fund that she started called, The Rare Impact Fund. Selena and her team came up with several goals for the brand, one being to raise 100 million dollars to the fund.  The Rare Impact Fund is meant to increase access to mental health services. Not only did Selena start this fund, but also stated a Rare Beauty Mental Health Council. Lots of thought and planning went into the making of Rare Beauty which will foreseeably be a success since Selena’s dedication and commitment has been present since day one. Selena took the opportunity to give back to a cause she was passionate about, alongside her love for beauty, and create a brand around it. Success has already started not even a month into the debut of the line, beyond the products, consumers have also been intrigued to learn more about the story behind the line. A powerful story to empower women to tear down walls and expectations that society and media has placed onto us, specifically the “unattainable physical perfection”.

We are all rare and are all considered beautiful, and Rare Beauty aims to encourage us to find self acceptance in our own skin and know that we are still beautiful no matter what.

Hannah Grace – BeYOUtiful

Hannah Grace was only 11 years old when she decided to found her company called BeYOUtiful. BeYOUtiful is a company that sells handmade bath bombs and beauty products. Hannah was inspired by this idea when she was on her way to her favorite beauty store when her father challenged her to create her own beauty brand. That very day, Hannah returned home and started doing research on creating her own beauty products. By the end of the day, 11 year old Hannah had already made her first bath bomb. Within weeks, her products were being sold at local markets, and as of today, her products are being sold online and in 8 retail stores across two states. At only 15 years old, Hannah has accomplished more than many people do by the time they are adults.

Hannah’s story begins at an even younger age. When she was an infant, her parents found themselves in a panic as they were rushing their newborn baby to the hospital. Once Hannah arrived at the hospital, the prognosis was grim, they believed that she would not survive the night. However, even at such a young age, Hannah fought for her life and eventually overcame her struggle. She was diagnosed with type I diabetes and uses her company to advance the medical study into the disease. Hannah has committed to donating 20% of all profits made by BeYOUtiful to JDRF, a foundation that advances the research into type I diabetes.

Hannah should be an inspiration to the rest of us. She has already overcome many struggles at such a young age, but she didn’t allow those struggles to hold her down. She utilized her struggles and was able to create a successful beauty company that is committed to do good in the world. She has also proven that entrepreneurship is not only a playground for adults, it is a creative outlet that any person can utilize.

3D Printed Manicures

Grace Chiang, 25, cofounded Mani.me with while getting an MBA at Stanford. She’s still working... [+] toward her degree.

At 25 years old, Grace Chiang is changing how women get manicures. Instead of a traditional salon process, which is extremely time consuming, expensive, and painful, you can have nails shipped to your doorstep.

Grace Chiang’s company, Mani.me, is a subscription service that sends 3d printed nails to members for a reasonable price compared to a traditional manicure. A consumer can purchase 2 sets of nails a month for $50, or 3 for $70. Chiang started this company as a MBA student at Stanford, and had two friends later join her.

The magic of Mani.me is how the nails are curated for each customer. The company uses an app to allow users to upload photos of their nails and create measurements to send a unique set of custom fitting nails to every subscriber. From there the customer can pick a design from the app for the color and drawing on the nails.

The nails differ from traditional acrylic nails, because they simply stick on your finger nail beds, and can be removed without any sort of painful process.

You can visit the company site at https://www.manime.co/
