Burger King to Freelance Queen: Alexandria Sims and the Intersection of Personal Vision and Professional Venture

Alexandria Sims set out on the journey of her career path as the incarnation of the college student’s worse fear: the picture every student paints in their mind of the life post-college they must succumb to, should they drown under the demands of a courseload which threatens to send their GPA—and future—into an irreparable nosedive. Sims had successfully completed her education at Rutgers State University of New Jersey…only to work at the local Burger King making only $9.50 per hour and consequently facing homelessness and bankruptcy.

 

After a long, dreary season of slogging through every workday in dreary acceptance of her fate, she took up a freelance writing gig on a site now called Upwork—and the tides turned in her favor. Snatching up every opportunity she could, she began freewriting around her day job, raking in hundreds of dollars every contract she filled. Along with this, she built connections with her clients and began spinning a web of networking that would continue to aid her in the future. “Get to know the right people and you can gain all the connections you want,” Sims advocates. “I met one guy who introduced me to 4 business owners who introduced me to connections of theirs who needed a copywriter and over the years I grew a strong client base.”

 

This dedication to her craft and growing clientele morphed her career as a reluctant sandwich sculptor at the ‘King into a self-created, self-driven content creator and copywriter of ADS Copywriting, her professional branding spun from her initials as a reflection of this individuality. While ADS is a relatively simple business pursuit, the guiding principles that have driven Sims to success are anything but, and are highly applicable to any business venture.

 

Needless to say of any business decision, Sims’ success in copywriting did not come without a challenge. Notably, however, much of this challenge was constructed of an intrinsic, personal struggle rather than an external obstacle. “I didn’t anticipate how good I’d actually do and I got overwhelmed. I wasn’t confident and caved under failure,” Sims admits. But Sims grew from this, “becoming a new person, literally”, giving the writing scene a second try through manifestation and reflective self-development with the help of a client who was coach in this area.

 

The practice of manifestation and trend of self-development can certainly be critiqued by the Christian eye as attempts to self-correct one’s course in life that are ultimately tainted by human err and misguided wisdom. Nonetheless, Sims’ advice can serve as a reminder that external change often begins with an internal change in one’s heart posture, and that God can use obstacles in the course of one’s life to point to the internal footholds which are preventing them from relying on and drawing nearer to Him.

 

Sims’ plans for her future likewise point towards a more holistic view towards pivotal undercurrents of the young entrepreneur’s life, towards higher education in particular. Sims explains, “I recently enrolled in an online certificate program for Inspired Leadership offered by Case Western University. I have an undergraduate degree from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, but I wasn’t happy with the educational aspect of my college career. I wanted to have some type of certification that I’m passionate about.”

 

All too often, college shifts between feeling like an exhilarating rollercoaster on an adrenaline high from pushing limits and engaging with others, everything draped in a haze of opportunity and excitement…and a four-year-long, self-induced prison sentence served for the mere prize of a slip of paper certifying one to do more work (yay!). But the intersection of Sims’ personal journey with her professional path demonstrates an attitude of patience, vision, and determination towards the meaning and purpose of career and education that is crucial to lock in on when one loses sight of the attitude God calls one to have in their every pursuit, in business and beyond.

Wes Watson was born and raised in San Diego, California, where he embodied the coastal California lifestyle of surfing and skateboarding. Instead of sleeping in, Watson began waking up at 3 AM, a practice he continues to this day. He focused on generating a meticulous daily routine involving physical fitness, discipline, and mindset development. Programming was also huge for Wes Watson. A topic he talks about frequently in his content, programming the mind is one of his keys to producing meaningful results in life. Watson’s strict adherence to programming while in prison earned him the admiration of fellow inmates.

Ten years later, in 2018, Watson was released and was miles away from financial freedom; he had hardly $200 to his name. However, he had something much more valuable: a deeply ingrained sense of discipline and an entrepreneurial plan for domination. In an age when people are pursuing fitness more than ever before, the former Californian prisoner launched Watson Fit, an online coaching business geared beyond just fitness but also to the entirety of life. One successful entrepreneurial endeavor was insufficient for the high ambitions of Wes Watson. Sugarcoating life is not something Watson specializes in, and this rawness appeals to his target demographic.

The Sweetest Devotion: Ashley Hetherington’s Journey as a Christ-Centered Influencer

Struggling to find her footing on a path through a season of worldly pressures and broken relationships, Ashley Hetherington was a young woman on the hunt for meaning and purpose, an unconscious search for her Lord burning from a heart of confusion riddled with footholds. But now, standing on the other side of this mountain of turmoil, is an emboldened 24-year-old woman of God whose radiant passion for Christ shines through her efforts as an influencer, author, and content creator. This renewed relationship with God that grew from one of the darkest periods of Ashley’s life has lit in her a fervor for helping other young women come to terms with fighting their own battles, especially concerning faith.

Hetherington has achieved this through business initiatives that, initially, took a leap of faith to pursue wholeheartedly; graduating from Miami University with a degree in interactive media studies and journalism and thus armed to aid in the growth of other companies, she never thought her own writing and social media presence would grow into anything more than a hobby and college pastime. But keeping God central to the trajectory of her life and career has led to a fruition of and full-time devotion to this mission through many outlets.

Ashley’s simple aim has been to encourage her fellow sisters in Christ, citing Proverbs 16:24: “Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”  She orchestrates a variety of media to reach her followers, including several bestselling books and eBooks, an online blog called “The Honey Scoop”, social media channel (accessible through Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and Facebook), a podcast, and a free email subscription for weekly devotionals called “The Hive.” Additionally, Hetherington has a premium Bible study deemed “The Tree”, which includes a daily Bible reading plan, weekly devotional video, monthly group calls with women from across the globe, and access to recommended worship playlists, podcasts, and book recommendations. Ashley’s content, especially “The Tree”, reaches thousands of women from all over every year, uniting them under the purpose of growing into stronger, faith-filled daughters of Christ.

Notably, amidst this success, Hetherington always offers this glory back to Christ. She stated in an interview with Peer Magazine, “I’ll never forget that in one of the lessons [at Miami University], we were taught we are in the business of effort and God is in the business of result so it’s on us to put in the effort. To put in the work, to do the time, to be consistent, to innovate, to network, to show up every day, but God is in the business of results.” In Zero to One, Peter Theil remarks on “the guiding concepts of business”, among these principles being that “it is better to risk boldness than triviality (p. 20).” Ashley Hetherington is living a life and guiding a mission that testifies to the truth in this notion—whatever the internal struggles and external obstacles someone faces, a heart and business built on the Rock will flourish in His perfect timing for the glory of His kingdom.

Ekaterina Demenkova

Ekaterina Demenkova recently made it on the Twenty Under Twenty list, where she pitched her health tracking app, PODIL. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, and is the Founder and CEO of PODIL. This type of position comes with great responsibility, but Ekaterina was passionate about her innovative cause and became an established young entrepreneur that helps many people with her creation.

PODIL promotes wellness, and allows its users to meet their health and wellness goals through an AI. The AI assistant gives the user a list of steps specifically curated for them that helps make someone’s health goals attainable. It utilizes a communal platform where people can share their accomplishments with their friends and family, and compete in challenges together.

Ekaterina’s overall goal was to make health information and personal health tips more accessible, and her app does just that. Her mission is to help people develop healthy habits, and grow easily, and PODIL uses technology to her advantage in doing so.

She is a perfect example of an innovative, young entrepreneur, especially considered what she has accomplished at such a young age. She revolutionized a new way to receive accurate, efficient, and reliable health information and advice so that people can make positive and healthy changes in their lives.

Tehzeeb Lalani, a young entrepreneur based in Mumbai, India, seeks to heal peoples’ relationship with food. She owns the company Scale Beyond Scale, a Mumbai-based company that consults clients on nutrition. Scale Beyond Scale is designed to help clients move beyond mindsets of short-term weight loss goals and on to mindsets of wholistic and long-term health. Lalani seeks to teach people to design behaviors that they can keep for a lifetime. Working with clients including those with health concerns such as diabetes and heart disease, Scale Beyond Scale is equipped to help people look at issues other than weight loss. She calls the movement toward wholistic health” more sanity, less vanity!” Lalani believes that two strategies for success in implementing ideas are setting deadlines and having a partner for accountability. “Telling people about the idea and that you will bring it to life in a few weeks/few months is also a great way to ensure you hold yourself accountable,” she says for an interview with ideamensch. She is also fond of her morning routines, which include meditation, breakfast, an hour of work, and a yoga class. She says that because she lacks control over the rest of her day, her morning is important for her to feel centered and grounded; she can then tackle anything that comes her way next. I think Tehzeeb Lalani conducts herself with thoughtfulness in both her personal context, with her morning routine, and professional context, in her field that prioritizes psychology. People would do well to slow their lives, think hard, work hard, and take care of themselves as Lalani does.

SoundMind: An App by Travis Chen and Brian Femminella

Travis Chen and Brian Femminella acknowledged how there was a lack of trustworthy mental health resources, and so they decided to come up with an app called SoundMind, which uses music to help reduce anxiety for individuals. Both of these individuals battled immense challenges in their personal lives, and they used them as inspiration to try to provide resources for other people. They created an online environment for people to have crucial mental health resources, and have a sense of community for others who understand the struggles that they are going through. They plan to expand their app even further to allow creators to upload their own sounds, along with commission opportunities.

    Antia D’Alisera is not merely a successful YouTuber. Born in Rome Italy, and now a freshman at Kings College in London, she was raised by her father who is a movie producer and her mother who is an interior designer in Rome. Her older sister recently graduated from Parsons School of Design for fashion. Anita is surrounded by excellent taste and a beautiful eye for aesthetics. While on vacation, Anita and her family frequently travel to their house on an island off of Greece called Patmos. From growing up surrounded by her parents and sister’s excellent taste in style, art, and design, Anita has found a passion and deep interest for graphic designs, film, beauty and exquisite aesthetics. She is gifted with ideaphoria and can easily put her ideas into practice, since she currently has her own YouTube channel and her own graphic design business.   

    Anita D’Alisera, known as AniDali on Youtube (and for all her social media platforms), is currently a content creator for more than 6 years reaching 26.4 thousand subscribers. She is a young entrepreneur since she gets paid by YouTube, and also started her own graphic design business in 2020. The purpose of her business is to help Youtubers create aesthetic intro, outro, and banner templates for their Youtube channel. She customizes people’s needs based on what their YouTube channel is about and her prices are very affordable. There is a demand for having YouTube channels be pleasing, since the more the effort in regards to how one’s presentation looks the more people will subscribe to it. This is understandable and what a person says in their videos matters as well. 

   On the Fiverr website, an online marketplace for freelancers, Anita mentions that in addition to helping YouTubers create graphic designs, she customizes beautiful templates for clients’ social media as well. Anita has an entrepreneurial mindset because she realizes that not everyone is a YouTuber so she has branched out to help people make their other social media platforms look attractive and beautiful. Anita’s talent for design at her young age promises a lifetime of inspiration to create beauty and make it known.

There are many things that people enjoy and one common thing is candles. Candles can come in all different scents, wicks, and ingredients. These things make each candle unique, and an all natural soy candle handed poured in Papillion, NE, Italy is definitely unique.

Nic Bianchi received a candle making kit on his twelfth birthday and was hooked from that point on. He Nic Bianchi, Bianchi Candle Company, with a few of his products.kept on creating all natural soy candles and soon afterwards, he introduced his candle business, Bianchi Candle Company. The company did not come as a surprise to his parents because if you rewind to Nic’s younger years, you would be impressed with the young boy. During elementary school, Nic would sell toys to his classmates at recess. Later, he upgraded his little toy business with a catalog and everything was sold with a logo of his creation.  He even went the next step and employed two other children as sales reps to help him with his toy business at school. His eagerness to be an entrepreneur expanded as he entered his candle company. The candle making process is more complex than most people think. Besides having a passion for entrepreneurship, Nic enjoys the math and science subjects which is a bonus in his candle making. Much thought goes into the ratios of ingredients and the sizing of the wick to ensure a longer burn and elements of the jar and label will matter in the process since the heat of the flame could destroy them.

Fit + Faith

Fit+Faith International - Christian Women Getting Healthy & Honoring GodThroughout this semester in ENTR 101, Dr. Sweet has talked about the different ways to integrate our faith into what we are passionate about.  Whether it’s sports, music, art, etc., there are plenty of ways to combine the Christian faith with a business.  Dr. Melody is an inspiring young entrepreneur who did just that.  Originally, Dr. Melody was a doctor of physical therapy and then acquired skills in coaching and mentoring as a health and life coach.  She was inspired to combine these skills with her passion for her faith to encourage physical, mental, and spiritual health.  About - Fit+Faith International

From this inspiration, Dr. Melody founded Fit + Faith International.  The mission of this organization is to “empower and equip God’s Daughters in growing in their health, faith and life to blossom into who He created them to be.”  Dr. Melody saw herself struggling with prioritizing physical health in the busyness of life and wanted to help herself as well as other women.  She is passionate about encouraging women in a way that is helpful, biblical, and loving.

Her organization offers several different services and tips for healthy living. Dr. Melody runs a podcast called, “The Healthy Christian Women Podcast.”  Additionally, she has spoken at different events and holds a Breakthrough program.  There are also meal and exercise plans posted on her website.

I think that this is a really unique way to combine talents with passion!  Dr. Melody is clearly a qualified individual who genuinely wants to encourage women to be the best versions of themselves.  Also, Fit + Faith has a blog that really dives into the tough, difficult topics.  Dr. Melody talks about how to be truly healthy – not just working for an “ideal” body.  I really appreciate the inclusivity of this organization, and I think that its mission to encourage women in truth and love is really great.
