Caleb Nelson: Romeo Rickshaws

The 14-year-old boy, Caleb Nelson, overheard his father contemplating ideas to draw more visitors downtown. His father is a real estate agent and hotel owner in Utah. Caleb came up with the idea of a pedicab service and pitched it to his father. After much convincing his father agreed and invested in two pedicabs for $10,000. Caleb gathered employees (his friends) and received training to learn how to properly drive and operate the vehicles. His business started by providing rides opening night for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Most rides were from the hotel room or venue to customers’ cars. Caleb’s clever business idea added another element to downtown Cedar City. His idea encouraged people to tour and enjoy the city. His business has been booming ever since and instead of charging a flat rate, tips are encouraged. Caleb’s business, Romeo Rickshaws, is now a flourishing tourist attraction.

Lavish by Grace

Meet Sherline Raaw, a young entrepreneur who created a Christian apparel business during the pandemic. Sherline first had been waiting tables for five years but knew that she didn’t want to be a server all her life. Tired of her life as a server, Sherline needed change. She decided to join the Air Force for stability and for their benefit. During her time joining the Air Force, Sherline also just got proposed to by her boyfriend of four years, while still in tech school, and trying to move out of her parents’ home. Despite her busy schedule. Sherline still found time to be with God.

She kept having this idea of Lavish by Grace in her head, but she didn’t know where to go. Asking God for guidance in her busy schedule, she looked to Him for what to do next. Right in 2019, when the pandemic hit, everyone was at home. That’s when she really found time and got to design her brand more. During her time at home, she noticed the lack of minimal Christian apparel and decided to aim her business in that direction. She started creating minimal(istic) matching loungewear that still embodied Christ. Her own idea took 2 years before she launched it. This idea had been brewing for quite some time, but thanks to Covid, she really got to invest her time in it.

The mission of Lavish by Grace is, “we live in a world where everything runs out and everything has a limit. However, God’s grace, which has been lavished upon us, does not. There is no better word to describe it than lavish. Lavish by Grace was founded with the intention of sharing my faith and raising awareness of Jesus Christ using minimal and comfortable clothing,” says Raaw. This beautiful idea brings a strong community together with simple and comfortable clothing.

Despite her busy schedule, Sherline was able to launch Lavish by Grace, woman apparel, during the pandemic. She wanted it to be more than just minimalist, cute loungewear for woman though. She wanted to create a community centered on Christ and comfort. With her company, she’s done well to sell at high-quality apparel while continuing to foster the Christian mindset. Her business is only at its wonderful beginning!

RJ Duarte: The Founder of Green Worx Landscaping

Based out of Golden, Colorado, RJ Duarte was only eight years old when his entrepreneurial ventures started. Motivated by his desire to buy himself candy, Duarte started his lawn mowing business in 2008 with one lawn mower, a red wagon, and five weekly lawn mowing clients. He began to take his business seriously by his third season and invested his savings back into his company. Duarte’s dedication, commitment, and incredible work ethic as an entrepreneur are evident as his income tripled every year since he began his business.

As Duarte began middle school, his business had grown too large to handle himself. He chose a friend from middle school, Owen Johnson, to be a partner in his landscaping business. Two years later, Duarte and Johnson decided they needed a name for their company- they eventually landed on Green Worx. Green Worx had grown much larger than the mere neighborhood lawncare service it started as. After working with Green Worx for over five years, Johnson decided to part ways with the company in order to pursue a college education after graduating high school. Duarte and Johnson, however, still frequently meet as friends to discuss Green Worx and life in general. As Duarte was contemplating going to college and running his company from school, Green Worx was pulling in six figures from annual revenue. He decided to focus on growing his company and work on creating a full-scale landscaping business.

One way that Duarte demonstrated he was an excellent, young entrepreneur was through his willingness to take risks. After high school, in 2019, Duarte made the decision to drop Grenn Worx’s small clients and, instead, rebrand as a premium landscaping and maintenance company. This meant that he would be undertaking large-scale, intricate landscaping and construction projects. Green Worx added two construction crews and lots of new equipment to the company. Duarte knew how risky the shift in scale would be for the business but decided to continue with it anyway. “It’s higher margins for more risk,” he says. “That comes with headaches, but without headaches, there’s no reward.”

Green Worx was incredibly successful throughout the years. In 2015, Duarte and Johnson had won first place in the Celebration for Young Entrepreneurs and also won the Young Americans Bank Business Award. In 2016, the newsletter, The Golden Informer, wrote an article about the success of Green Worx and put Green Worx on the front cover. In that same year, Green Worx was nominated and won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award By Ernst & Young Foundation. By the end of 2016, Green Worx was 300% bigger than the year before. Green Worx continues to steadily grow. In 2019, the company brought in $750,000 in revenue. Duarte was never afraid of the workload and was always searching for new ways to expand and grow his business. Green Worx’s success is built off of his hard work and devotion to his craft.

Entrepreneur and High Schooler

The Gen Z entrepreneur who I discovered is a young women named Destiny Snow, raised by business owners she started a makeup business at just 15 years old.

Destiny Snow :: millennialentrepreneurs.com

While covid 19 hindered many from living the life they wanted, Snow didn’t let it stop her. Covid pushed her to find new opportunities for her business. She discovered early on that she needed to identify the target market for her products instead of trying to sell to family and friends. She jumped on the growing use of social media for business growth and learned how to sponsor people and companies who attracted the type of audience who she was looking to sell to.

Setting a good example for our declining society, Snow said she forced herself to learn and read about marketing so that she could implement what she learned along with her passion into her business.

Snow not only has started this business, successfully rolled with the punches but also aims to teach other young people today about entrepreneurship and marketing skills. She has done this through writing and releasing E-books and becoming a social media influencer.

It’s no wonder that Snow succeeded so well in the business industry because her mother, she says, is a successful business owner. Snow advises finding a model who you can be inspired by and who shows you how to succeed in your area. For Snow, this was her mother.

For me, the thing that’s one of the most impressive about Snow’s story is how she educated herself on how to succeed using marketing. She read books and described her house as looking like a library because of all the material she read to learn and continues to learn. Snow’s story is inspiring, and it continues to grow. She’s an example of what each of us is capable of.
