CU Boulder Graduate finds an Innovative Way to Care for the Elderly

Marlo Vernon, a Colorado University Boulder alumnus, discovered a common thread of concern for senior citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic. She recognized a need for a peace of mind from families who could not necessarily see their elderly family members as often as they would have liked to. Marlo relates an all too real scenario where loved ones would make daily phone calls to the elderly simply to see if they were still alive; this was a terrifying situation that she found a simple solution to, because “that’s not a conversation anyone wants to have.” Driven by her own concern for her grandparents while she was away at college and during the pandemic, Marlo, together with her father Todd Vernon, created CarePenguin (Home – CarePenguin).

CarePenguin is a noninvasive hot water sensor. No one wants a camera on in their house watching their every move; this hot water sensor shows activity in a house without that feeling of invasion of privacy. This mechanism detects every day procedures such as washing hands, brushing teeth, doing the dishes, watering the garden, etc.. By knowing that their loved ones are up and moving, families can go throughout their day with peace of mind. Marlo demonstrates an eye for a need in the community along with a solution to the problem. The CarePenguin app is simple and easy to use. By looking at an app on their phone, family members can see the last time a faucet was turned on. The app also senses lack of movement that alerts the user that it may be time to check in on their elderly.

Marlo’s mission to provide security within the home is inspiring to up and rising entrepreneurs like myself. She exemplifies the idea that you can help others and make money at the same time.  At first thought, CarePenguin, didn’t make sense to me; but after further research, I saw how helpful the device really is. This shows me ideas that may seem “silly” or unhelpful at first, may have a different angle. Marlo and her father inspire me to reconsider ideas that I have downplayed in the past, and take a look at them from a different perspective.

Maddie Rae: Slime Queen

There is certain types fun as children that you never grow out of…well at least that is true for me. I loved (and still love) mixing things together and creating some sort of ‘unique’ concoction which is probably why I enjoy baking because it is the grown-up way of mixing ingredients together to form beauty and deliciousness. But enough about sweet and treats, and let’s do full one eighty and talk about slime. Slime? Is it that disgusting looking thing that can turn up in who knows where or can it be that pretty sparkly thing that you can find in the store? Children’s slime is a simple way to have endless fun. Playing with it can be a blast and that is exactly what a young girl named Maddie Rae discovered.

Maddie started making her own slime but as time passed, the interest in slime increased and she found it difficult to find slime glue. But the shortage in glue did not stop Maddie. She decided to try and create her own original slime glue. Finally, after hard work and many experiments, the perfect glue emerged which became Maddie Rae’s Slime Glue. The slime glue was a success and the business decided to expand to an array of slime items that aid in the process of making of slime.

There was a problem when there was not enough slime glue, but Maddie took her twelve-year-old passion for slime glue to that problem and found a solution. Her solution turned into a business which produced Maddie Rae’s Slime Glue. Since then, Maddie had the honor in breaking the Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Slime in 2017 for thirteen thousand eight hundred and twenty pounds. (The record has been broken by someone else) The joy of making slime combined with solving a need caused a young girl to become an entrepreneur.

The brains behind Clicks Talent

Abraham Lieberman a veteran for the Israeli military used his time when not in service to start working on his dreams. He took advantage of the rising need for social media consultants amongst US companies and used that to start up his business, Clicks Talent. He saw the pain of many influencers that they might not have even realized or noticed. These influencers weren’t using their full talent in the ability to push and promote social media apps. While he was originally from Israel he knew that there was an open market in the US and took a break from his college education to pursue this opportunity. Abraham was very quick to see that new apps needed big name influencers and creators to promote their apps. He continues to diversify his company and pivot as new apps come out reaching those apps with different influencers that related to those apps. Abraham has really taken advantage of the rise in short-form videos such as Tik Tok and other apps that are now adding these videos into their portfolio. He has now expanded his company into a global powerhouse now reaching a variety of countries and apps within those countries. He believes that diversifying oneself in cultures allows them to grow and thrive in the current marketplace. A key aspect that I took from this article is Abraham’s emphasis of collaborating with people that have more experience than you and will be able to open your mind to different ideas. Personally, Abraham inspires me to think outside the normal box of products or services and to look for areas in the marketplace that no one has thought of or looked for. I think that using social media in the current time period is something that I took from this. I believe that social media will continue to open more and more areas of opportunity in the marketplace of the future.

Jacob Landis-Eigsti- Jacob LE Video Production

Jacob Landis-Eigsti is the founder of Jacob LE Video Production which helps companies gain new marketing and video production clients. He has run his own business for 10 years now and is very successful. Jacob says he started this business because he saw many businesses struggling to tell their story and connect with others online. He wanted to use his marketing and video production skills to help other businesses.

Jacob’s business is very innovative because he uses the internet to communicate with people on how to grow their business through video. I found it unique that his goal is to teach people how to market their businesses better, instead of only trying to make his business the best. He is very selfless in this sense.

Jacob says he starts off each day by making a to-do list with three things he wants to get accomplished for the day. He also turns his phone off for 90-minute blocks in order to get tasks done without getting distracted. Techniques like these demonstrate a focused business person. He also said a success strategy of his is to always follow up with a client or business partner you’ve been talking to. This allows for closure or further conversation with peers.

Facebook, Instagram, and online video advertising are some of the things Jacob focuses on helping people with in his business. We are becoming more and more dependent on social media every day, so I think it was very innovative of Jacob to incorporate this into his business. If people are unsure how to market themselves online, it could be the downfall to their business. Jacob LE Video Production is an easy solution to help small/medium businesses with these advertising techniques.

Being a marketing major, Jacob Landis-Eigsti specifically inspires me to grow in my marketing knowledge so that I can eventually help people in the way that he does. In an interview with Carlyn Runnels he states, “Also, learn business skills first as an entrepreneur. It’s important to be good at your craft, but business skills and sales skills are incredibly important.” This inspires me to learn the basic business skills first, because this will set the foundation for being able to help people with all kinds of businesses, like Jacob does.

Catherine Cooke: myYearbook

Another relevant entrepreneur for students is Catherine Cook, creator of myYearbook, a free interactive online yearbook. At the age of fifteen Catherine and her seventeen-year-old brother Dave came up with the idea to be able to interact with more fellow students online. They quickly got their first investor from their web designer older brother and set to work. Soon after building their website, they combined with a user generated quiz site to garner many more interactions.

As they grew, Catherine’s business encountered some pivots as she tried to figure out what would work and what would not. At some points potential investors would want her to move headquarters or determine ad space. Ultimately, she stayed true to her business and vision and it paid off. MyYearbook.com was ranked one of the most popular sites for middle school and high school students in 2006. As her business grew, it attracted nicer advertisers like Disney and Neutrogena.

While she put time into growing it, as was a struggle for many school age entrepreneurs, school and grades started to suffer. Because being in the heart of her target market and being able to optimize her website with direct input and feedback made myYearbook more user friendly, it also became very overwhelming when trying to balance work and school. Later in her high school career Catherine found herself having to skip classes to work.

Yet through every obstacle and inconvenience, starting when she was just fifteen years old, Catherine Cook’s myYearbook has carved itself a niche for high schoolers and grown to 3 million members.

Cook kept up her business all throughout college, after which she sold myYearbook. She remains a partner however, working full time for the business. Catherine Cooke has become a very well-known entrepreneur, inspiring many young people to not let their age keep them from pursuing their big ideas.

Langston Whitlock’s SafeTrip: Unique, Thriving, & Safe

Langston Whitlock is an 18-year-old Atlanta-native, Georgia State University freshman, longtime coder, drummer, son, and brother. Also, he is cofounder and chief information officer (CIO) of the multi-million dollar company, SafeTrip, which provides ridesharing services for the homeless and elderly in the Atlanta, Georgia area who are in need of reliable transportation to medical appointments and wheelchair compatibility. It all started when Whitlock and Ja’Nese Jean, opera singer, social entrepreneur, philanthropist, and now SafetTrip’s CEO, who had been friendly colleagues in Atlanta for several years, were attending a local event and discovered the problem they would soon solve with SafeTrip. As they were at the community outreach event, Whitlock told Jean that he had heard from a local homeless veteran that many people in the area were unable to make it to important medical appointments due to lack of transportation. Jean replied by asking “Can you make an app for that?”

Whitlock learned how to write code as a young 12-year-old when he created an anonymous messaging app to try and contact his father; at 16 he became the youngest person to be recognized by Forbes Enterprise Technology judges and CIO for the company, meaning he oversees the development team and helps implement sourcing data and new technologies, such as users being able to pay for rides by debit, credit, or insurance. Though everyone else who works for the company is older than him, he says this is no issue at all and it works well; if anything, he says, “They love me cause I’m a kid, I guess.” Additionally, his perspective as a young person has proven valuable: SafeTrip recruits new high school graduates to be drivers for the company in order to further community-connectedness and to help teens who may not have a clear path ahead of them; also, these kids have just recently learned things like defensive driving and CPR at school, so these skills are fresh in their minds.

The app itself launched in 2018 and in 2019 made $3.4 million in revenue; also, it currently has $2 million in funding. Their motivation, besides wanting to better their community and help those in need, is also rooted in that the Atlanta-based company wants to show that the Atlanta technology scene is just as impressive and valuable as Silicon Valley. Additionally, Whitlock is personally committed to providing for his mother and bringing her all the happiness in the world, as a way of repaying her for the work she has put in throughout his life.

Overall, Langston Whitlock is a great example of a young entrepreneur in the 21st century. He and his cofounder saw a problem in their community and, using their existing skillsets and resources as active community members, and building on the typical idea of ridesharing went out and solved a real problem for the greater good.

We all love candy, there is no denying that, but one thing we could live without is the cavities that candy brings. Alina Morse saw this problem and faced it head-on. About 30 miles away from Detriot lies Morse’s company headquarters. The multi-million dollar company is called Zolli Candy. The sugar-free candy is sold online and in 7,500 stores.  Young Morse is working on other types of sugar-free candy as well. Zollipops, her main type of candy, can be found in multiple well-known chains such as Target, Krogers, and Whole Foods. Morse’s ability to solve this very common problem has made her a wildly successful young entrepreneur.

Andrew Mason – Groupon

The story of Groupon and its main entrepreneur is a dramatic one. Andrew Mason was a web designer paid by tech billionaire Eric Lefkofsky to drop out of grad school and start a business. With his prior experience and classic dropping-out-of-college storyline, Andrew was heading down the road of successful entrepreneurship.

Although he had built enough reputation to warrant a million dollar investment from a former employer, Mason was still in uncharted territory. In an interview with the Gimlet podcast, Mason had said “In the early days we would buy a bunch of academic books on collective action, and me and the other people there would just sit around and read.” The book learning was effective, but there were still some trial and error steps along the way.

While still figuring out what genre of value Groupon would provide its users, Mason and his partners had a few tries and guesses and trips. The original point was to provide an area for people to come up with an idea and go into it together. “I have a plan, but I’m not going to go through with it unless a lot of people do it with me.” Early on, they would seed ideas out to the public and see if they would take. Business was slow, and eventually the users started coming up with their own ideas.

This caused Mason to risk losing his funding; unless he could find an avenue that would provide steady usage and income, Groupon would be shut down. Mason eventually landed on group discount. Groupon sold retail discounts, giving a cut of each sale to the business providing it. Starting off by manually distributing and building relationships Groupon ended up growing faster than Apple, Google, and Facebook. Though he is no longer a part of Groupon, Andrew Mason continues to work as a successful entrepreneur.

Christmas and birthdays can be a very stressful time of year for parents. Trying to get something that their kids will like can be a challenge. Ryan Kaji and his parents saw this problem and created Ryan’s World to help those parents. Ryan’s World is a YouTube channel, started back in 2015, devoted to testing out toys to see if children will like them. The tester is Ryan Kaji, a nine-year-old now millionaire. While Kaji is the main star of the YouTube channel, alongside him are his mother, father, and twin sisters. Ryan’s World consists of over 27 million subscribers and his videos have generated over 43 billion views. Ryan’s world is in the top 100 most subscribed YouTube channels in the United States. Furthermore, Kaji was named the highest-paid YouTube star in 2018 and 2019.

The Kaji family is one that holds great entrepreneurs. They saw a problem: parents not knowing what toys to get for their kids, and they created a great solution. The solution they created, making a YouTube channel where Ryan tries out different toys, was innovative and profitable. Moreover, the creative skills that young Kaji has and is still developing will benefit him greatly in life. His story is only going to get more interesting and is definitely one to stay up to date on in the future.

 

 

 

Three Nails Clothing-Derek Dahl

Three Nails Clothing is a clothing company designed for athletes who want to represent God’s kingdom. Derek was a college basketball player that wanted something more. He wanted to become a professional basketball player, but after college, he became a financial advisor. Derek knew he wanted to do something more than a 9 to 5 job. Finally, he used an idea that he had been thinking about for a long time, and after a lot of brainstorming and prayer, he finally decided to start his own company. Derek wanted comfortable, athletic wear that he could wear to the gym, but he also wanted something that represented his beliefs and values. In turn, he created Three Nails Clothing. Dahl wanted to create a sleek and minimal design that represented something meaningful to the Christian religion, so he decided to use the cross. The Cross represents God’s sacrifice to the world and seems like a perfect fit for Dahl’s company. He used clever designs to complete his logo by creating the cross with three nails, the three nails that nailed Jesus to the cross. Derek stated that “It is our hope that our brand’s subtle designs will allow you to cultivate conversations to share your faith in Christ with others.” This mission is beyond entrepreneurship and a clothing brand; what Derek has created is a brand focused on an eternal goal. The goal that brings others to Christ.
