For most teenagers, social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. They use it to stay connected with friends and gather information about the world. While these platforms can be used in a wide variety of ways, many of these teens have gained an in-depth knowledge of how Social Media works and how people interact within each platform. This skill is so common among the younger generation that few seem to understand the importance and significance of this intellectual skill. Iman Gadzhi was one of these ordinary teenagers until he discovered how to capitalize off of his social media knowledge.

Iman Gadzhi was a 17 year old boy raised by his single mother. As Iman grew older he realized that he would have to find a way to support him and his mom. As a result, he quickly adopted an entrepreneurial mind and started several businesses which all ended in failure. It wasn’t until he offered to run his club soccer team’s and was offered to be paid that Gadzhi saw how he could make money with his current skill set of social media. This revelation gave Iman Gadzhi all the information to pursue a career in Social Media Marketing (SMM). He set a goal that if he could reach a certain monthly income, he would drop out of high school. After weeks of hard work, Iman landed two major clients and his dream was finally realized. He dropped out of high school and placed all his time and energy into this new business venture.

While scaling his business could have easily been the final continual step in this process, Gadzhi came thought of something more incredible. If he, a normal teenager could use the skills that almost every teenager has to build a business that could support his dream life, why couldn’t others do it too? This is what ultimately strengthened Iman Gadzhi in this industry. While he could have chosen to focus on a singular problem and keep his ideas to himself, Iman chose to start a SMM course to teach other people like himself how to create a business in this arena. Now we fast-forward several years and Gadzhi has cemented himself as a thought leader in Social Media Marketing and has taught thousands of people how they can become financially secure as well as entrepreneurially minded.

Akshay Ruparelia is just your regular 19 year old millionaire from North East London. While moving with his family, he found that commission rates that estate agents charge in London are outrageous, charging up to 2-3% for the sale. Ruparelia wanted to change this, so he did as any 19 year old would do, he made a website. His website, Doorsteps, only charges 99 pounds, compared to an average of 10,000 pounds for an estate agent. After just over a year, the website is now worth 12 million pounds, which is just incredible. His first sale came from someone who just stumbled upon the website in East Sussex, after proving the model worked, the same person sold more land through the website. In total, he has sold 1,500 homes for 120 million pounds, saving people over 1 million pounds in fees.

Ruparelia’s endeavor is definitely proof that there is opportunity everywhere around us. This website was founded simply by him getting an idea while moving houses. The cool thing about this is that it is not an original idea necessarily as there are already estate agents selling property, Ruparelia is just making the process better for the person selling the house. I tend to think that entrepreneurship is strictly creating something brand new that the world has never seen before, but that is not what it is all about as we can see with this story. Entrepreneurship can be making an already known process better, like selling houses in London.

Ipsy- Beauty Subscription Service

Michelle Phan is an American makeup artist, blogger, and entrepreneur. She created a YouTube channel in 2006, being named the “Beyoncé of the beauty-vlogging world”. She was one of the first vloggers to “gain a mass audience” with 8.8 million subscribers. In 2012, she founded Ipsy, a beauty subscription service. Ipsy is a monthly subscription service that sends 5 deluxe-sized beauty products to you. You take a two-minute quiz based on preferences on brands and products, and pay $12 a month for the “glam bag”.

Phan said the reason she created Ipsy was to “disrupt the beauty industry”. She knew YouTube would become very successful for beauty vloggers and wanted to build her brand after creating a channel. Ipsy’s competition was BirchBox and Dollar Shave Club, but Ipsy specialized in “glam bags”. Ipsy is a platform to for people to express their beauty, inner and outer. She said, “makeup is not a mask that covers up your beauty, it’s a weapon that helps you express who you are from the inside.”

A few years after creating Ipsy, Michelle Phan left the company and named Marcelo Camberos the CEO. Within the first six months of launching the website, Ipsy reached profitability. In 2019, Ipsy made over $500 million in revenue and has millions of people buying their “glam bags”. Ipsy includes makeup tutorials, customer reviews, celebrity content, and personalization quizzes. In 2020, Ipsy has over three million subscribers and continues to grow. The reason subscribers continue to buy products from Ipsy is because of their community, individualism, and empowerment. Ipsy builds a strong community to inspire and encourage customers to be creative and feel beautiful. They also celebrate the individual and what makes them unique. Finally, Ipsy empowers their customers by helping customers’ build their brand and express themselves.

Today, people want to feel beautiful with or without makeup. They also want to feel empowered and trust companies’ to help them feel that way. I think that’s why many customers trust Ipsy and continue to buy their products.

Caleb Johnson

Caleb Johnson is a man who has had a history of entrepreneurship. He started his first business at nine years old. Young Caleb bought and sold beanie babies, starting by purchasing his sisters collection for $100 by middle school, he had turned this into a job earning him $50,000 per year! By age 15 he had  become the youngest American to be appointed the CEO of a tokyo based company! He even had a book written called “15-Year-Old CEO.” He continued with business ventures through middle school and by the end of high school he had over $1,000,000 in his bank account! After this he went to Virginia tech for one year before realizing that, because of this love for learning, he had to drop out of school! He continued starting businesses. He even started a card company which sold for 10 million dollars to other venture capitalists. Today, he resides as the chairman and CEO of Magic City Ford Lincoln which is an auto dealership in Virginia. It has been in his family for four generations now making his business one of the few fourth generation car dealerships still in business! He continues with his love for investing in real estate and his own projects. He also loves to invest in various start-ups across many different industries.

During the school year, one website always rises hugely in popularity among students.
A popular study tool, Quizlet has provided quality studying help to all levels of students. A website and app that allows teachers and students to study through use of flashcards and study sessions, Quizlet has gotten many through midterms and finals. Designed by a young entrepreneur with personal insight to a need, Quizlet was founded in 2005 by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland. He designed it at first to help him study for his French vocabulary and after acing his test, shared it with his friends.
Andrew applied a little bit of the 0 to 1 method to his project which has been part of making Quizlet so successful. It took until 2007 to be released to the public but has since come to be realized as one of the first steps into education gamification. When he saw the impact Quizlet was having on students everywhere, Sutherland dropped out of MIT where he was pursuing a computer science degree to give more attention to his project.
A personality trait of entrepreneurs is willingness to pursue risk and take opportunity when it shows. After having taken a break from Quizlet to work on his education, Andrew fully committed to growing his business. A student designing with students in mind, his approach was correct from the first.
His care for his users and their platform has continued to grow. In addition to the base platform’s effectiveness, Sutherland did not stop there. “The most important thing that I realized during this process was how to treat my users. They’re Quizlet’s biggest asset.” With a business mind and courteous personality, he decided that interaction between user and owner would be part of what made Quizlet exceptional. Daniel Fine

Daniel Fine shows that no age is too young to start a business as he created four different companies by the time that he was in college. As a senior in college, Fine has been recognized for his great entrepreneurship by many outlets, including Forbes, TIME Magazine, The New York Times, and even the President of the United States by earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award. While Daniel Fine has made many impressive accomplishments in his young career, he continues to give back to the community in a way that he enjoys.

Daniel Fine started his professional career at seven years old when his brother Jake was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Daniel realized that he could help to give back to the diabetes community by launching Team Brotherly Love, his first business. To this day, Team Brotherly Love has been very successful and has raised over two million dollars towards Type 1 diabetes research.

Fine later launched another company called Match Tutors in an attempt to provide innovation in the tutoring industry. He noticed that when a tutor and student had similar interest, the session usually yielded better results. He decided to create Match Tutors so that any student would be able to find their ideal tutor to “increase engagement and achieve greater results.”

Glass-U, one of Fine’s successful businesses, seeks to market fully foldable sunglasses in a unique way. Daniel Fine took a new perspective on the sunglass industry and created sunglasses that are fully foldable to be even more easily stored. Glass-U’s marketing technique is unique because it appeals to college students. Glass-U is licensed by many different colleges and universities and even extends to fraternities and sororities to make customized sunglasses. Glass-U has been featured in the Rose Bowl, Lalapalooza, and the FIFA World Cup.

Along with Team Brotherly Love, Daniel Fine also decided to give back to the diabetes community by creating his company Dosed. Dosed is a smartphone app that tracks the insulin dosage taken by a Type 1 diabetic. According to the Dosed website “Dosed improves patient compliance by providing direct access to data that can facilitate behavioral modification.”

College No. Six figures YES!

What started as a plan to earn money for candy, turned into a 6 figure/ year income for a teenager from Colorado. RJ Duarte was 8 years only when he began his entrepreneurial journey, with a red wagon, a lawnmower, and 5 neighborhood clients RJ began his business. Over time the venture grew, and soon he had a whole trailer park worth of clients. At this point RJ could not keep up with the work on his own. That is when a friend named Owen Johnson became the second member of the workforce. Now on weekends RJ could do more work which increased his income.

For marketing RJ relied on a simple “word of mouth” technique to get new customers on board. And in 2014 the two decided they would take it to the next step and create a legitimate business. They named it GreenWorx. After the hire of another employee, and another big season coming up they decided to try a new marketing technique. After many failed attempts, their story was picked up by a local newsletter that was sent to over 19,000 residents in the area. Let us just say it was a good season for them after that!

By the end of 2016, Green Worx was 300% bigger than the year before. Going into 2017, Green Worx has expanded its team, adding two new labor consultants to help with increasing demand. At this point the two were making six figures a year and growing. After more than five years of working with Green Worx Landscaping, Owen decided to part ways with the company in order to go off to college, but RJ had other plans. He had built something far more than that young 8-year-old in need of candy ever imagined. He decided not to go to college and stuck with the business.

Now with four trucks, and fifteen employees during season the company is bringing in annual revenues close to $750,000/ yr. Thanks to his work ethic, and some strokes of luck, RJ has built a business that will support him for years to come.

ManCans! Manly scented candles

 

Another young entrepreneur out of Ohio is Hart Main. Hart Main is a 13-year old that came up with the idea of manly scented candles. “Why don’t people make candles with scents that everyone likes?” Hart Main asked, while smelling the overly perfumed candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser, he thought about guys who did not want their bedrooms to smell like, lavender soap. Although his sister did not expect him to fully pursue the manly scented candles idea himself, he did, and the idea has turned into a nationwide success. But before this success, before the company started, Harts’ wheels began turning, and the entrepreneur in him began to come out. He saw the opportunity right under his nose, the young entrepreneur combined his passion for helping his community with his interest in making a different sect of candle by donating to local soup kitchens and using the empty cans to hold his extraordinary scents. Main put in an initial investment of $100, his parents put in $200, and they all worked together to develop the candles as a group. Hart and his family work together to craft these handmade soy-wax-blend candles that possess the kinds of familiar smells from around the house that no man (or woman) would turn their nose up at. Hart’s current candles includes scents like dirt, fresh cut grass, sawdust, campfire, pizza, and coffee, bacon, Grandpa’s Pipe, and more. Each comes individually packed in a gift box. Today, ManCans candles are in over 60 stores across the country and have sold about 9,000 units. Main looks forward to improving his business, as well as moving into other entrepreneurial ventures, “I like the fact that I have control over things and can make decisions and see what’s actually happening,” he says.

Nic Bianchi started Bianchi Candle Co. when he was just twelve years old. Nic loves science, math, and candles, so his interests turned into a business where he hand-poured homemade candle mixtures in small batches. This eventually grew into a company that he still runs at sixteen years old.

Bianchi candle batches consist of high quality fragrances and all-natural soy wax, making these candles different from many other candle companies. His competitors were behind in the game since they had not started off the basis of completely natural products right away. This way, Nic was able to draw a large share of the market by branding his candles as all-natural and positivity-spreading.
