Noa-edited-10 copy.jpg

This young entrepreneur named Noa Mintz started a business called Nannies by Noa when she was just 12 years old in 2012. She has made numerous appearances on various television stations and channels to talk about her service and has a wide following behind her business. As of 2015 her business had a net worth of about $375,000. Her business aims to find the best nannies and babysitters for families around New York City, the Hamptons and the Tri-state area. Noa is extremely driven by her passion for helping children and their families. Friends and family close to her would say that she has a niche for matchmaking people together which has aided her in finding nannies and babysitters that are compatible with certain types of families. Her idea is great and very interesting because it gives families a platform in which they can find reliable, fun, passionate, and trustworthy nannies that parents can feel safe leaving their children with and to help care for their children when they are unable to. They do a detailed background screening and even provide some educational services for nannies and babysitters to improve their skills. She ended up hiring a trained CEO to run the business for her because working 40 hours a week was interfering with her schoolwork. That being said, she clearly cares about her education in addition to her business. When she is not engaged in work for her business or school, she is also part of an organization called The Friendship Circle which pairs teenagers with special needs children and offers mentorship for them. She demonstrates innovation by providing this service to families all over New York City and the Tri-state area, which is a very large geographic area, that has a lot of people in need of this type of service. Her story and motivation is very inspiring to me and shows me that any business is possible to create and establish no matter what age you are.

Me and the Bees

At just four years old, Mikaila Ulmer’s parents encouraged her to enter a children’s business competition. So, little Mikaila put her thinking cap on. She said, two significant things happened in that time period. She got stung by a bee twice and her grandmother sent their family her cookbook, which included the grandmothers lemonade recipe.

At first, Mikaila was scared of the bees, but then she became fascinated with them. She started researching them and realized that bees needed help. She thought, “What if I could help the bees by using my grandma’s lemonade recipe?”. Thus, Me and the Bee’s Lemonade was born.

At first, the venture was small and endearing, but now, at 14 years old, Mikaila is participating in large social entrepreneurship panels. She is also educating the public on how to better protect the honeybees. A percentage of her profits goes towards helping organizations fight to save the bees.

Me and the Bee’s Lemonade is now being sold at places like Whole Foods (an 11 million dollar deal) the world’s leader in natural and organic food. There are also a growing amount of restaurants serving her lemonade. Through connecting two very different ideas, Mikaila has been able to create a thriving business while striving to raise funds and awareness for the struggling bee population.

Bravo Company Manufacturing

Bravo Company Manufacturing is a firearms manufacturer that was started in 2003. After serving in Iraq and being part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, former United States Marine Paul Buffoni began Bravo Company Manufacturing in his garage in Hartland, Wisconsin.

After 9/11, there was a massive increase in the demand of riffles and other firearms from people in the United States that were looking for tools to defend themselves and their families. At the time, there was only one large manufacturer that was making AR15 and M4 riffles for the commercial market, which was the legendary gun manufacturer, Colt.

Buffoni quickly recognized that there was a need in the commercial market for riffles that were professional quality and that people could rely rely on in literal life or death situations. This is exactly what bravo Company USA provides: they rigorously test each riffle, barrel, and upper-receiver that they produce in their factory, and if any one of their products does not meet 100% of their specifications, they immediately scrap the product and will not sell it to any customer.

Bravo Company has been based in Hartland, Wisconsin since 2003, and they are one of the largest employers in that area. Interestingly enough, Buffoni focuses on hiring people that thing more like mechanics or engineers, since they are able to help the company develop better, more innovated products to bring to the market. Bravo Company spends years developing new parts for their weapon systems, with the focus on making these products lighter and stronger than previous versions.

Paul Buffoni was able to recognize a real need in the firearms industry and used his expertise in this field to create high quality, affordable products that the market desperately wanted. Buffoni also helps out other veterans through some charitable efforts of his company, and he loves to spend time giving back to the great community of veterans that we have here in the United States. Bravo Company is an excellent company, with a great founder, that accomplishes it’s mission of being a premier gun systems manufacturer in a simple, and customer friendly way.

Drop Out to Success

Matt Mullenweg started his adult life as a political science major at the university of Huston. He soon realized that this was not the place for him and he dropped out of college. He then worked at a network company for two years before leaving and creating his own company. He and a friend started Auttomattic, an internet company that has brands such as word press and tumblr. It is great to see a success story where someone found out that school wasn’t their calling and decided to leave and pursue a different path. Mullenweg had extreme courage to leave the normal path and plunder into the path of the unkown. We sometimes think that to become successful we must follow the lead of many other successful people and go to college, the fact is that if the college path isn’t for you, you may still gain wisdom in other ways and become successful in your own way. Mullenweg is now the CEO of Automattic which currently owns Word Press and its over 70 million websites.

Cameron Johnson – The 9 Year Old Entrepreneur

Cameron Johnson is a prime example of a unique and driven entrepreneur. If you begin to look at his business history, he starts innovating in 1994 with Cheers and Tears Printing Co, and end in 2004 with TrueLoot. However, what is shocking is that he has had 13 other businesses during that time. Johnson is an example of an entrepreneur who loves to innovate and create. He has not been satisfied with his initial company that he created when he was 9 years old that brought in over $50,000. Johnson loves the idea of innovating and does not want to be held to just one company.

I think that this story is inspiring because when thinking about an entrepreneur, you often think they have one chance to be successful or else they will plummet and fail. Even though Johnson’s first effort was successful, he decided to continue creating. I think that this is a valuable lesson for young entrepreneurs who think that they have only one chance to be a success.

I think that we can also learn from the mindset that Johnson has as an entrepreneur. He says, ““True prosperity isn’t something you take from the world: it’s something you share with the world.” I think that this quote is especially helpful because when I first thought of an entrepreneur I assumed that they were only trying to create an idea so that they can benefit themselves. Johnson is a classic example of an entrepreneur offering his product and idea as a service to the people instead of just trying to make a product. This idea is consistent throughout his 15 business ventures. He is constantly trying to help others, and I believe that is what has lead to his success. Cameron Johnson may not fit the stereotype of a success entrepreneur who made it big with his billion dollar idea. He started as a 9 year old selling welcome cards and has shifted from business to business leaving his positive impact where he has gone. He now works as a consultant to help other entrepreneurs succeed.

Brian Keller and Zachary Quinn: Love Your Melon

As the weather grows colder, I thought it was fitting to explore the great minds behind the growing brand, Love Your Melon. Zachary Quinn, 26, and Brian Keller, 25, met when they were both attending the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. On the second day of their entrepreneurship class, Brian and Zachary decided to join forces to create a project that would see a profit at the end of the semester. They decided to create a company that would sell beanies, and their reason was that it’s always cold in Minnesota. After raising $3500 in small loans from family and friends, Zachary and Brian sent their beanie design to a knitting mill in Portland, Oregon, and the embroidered logo was designed and created by a local business.

Once Brian and Zachary had their product, they decided to add a nonprofit element because Zachary was influenced by his mom’s contributions to homeless shelters. Brian and Zachary decided to donate one beanie for every beanie purchased to patients suffering from cancer. During their first round of sales, Love Your Melon sold 200 beanies in front of Zachary’s parents’ restaurant, so Brian and Zachary donated 200 beanies to oncology patients at a local children’s hospital.

Zachary was impacted greatly by one patient they donated a beanie to, and that inspired him to take a gap year so he could focus on growing the business. Pretty soon they were traveling and spreading the positive brand on a bus tour. During their adventures in 2014, they decided to create their college ambassador program because a lot of students were interested in delivering the beanies to cancer patients. Today, Love Your Melon has 13,000 students at 850 schools delivering beanies to kids with cancer, and they have expanded their product line to scarfs, blankets, and gloves.

This is an inspiring story and another example of how a great idea has started within a classroom. I think this proves that minds coming together can create a stronger company because Zachary was familiar with nonprofits but needed Brian to help create a product that can serve his mission. What really impressed me about this story was the passion that Zachary and Brian had. They didn’t stop at getting an A in the class, they were impacted by the patients they were serving, and that drove them to continue growing Love Your Melon. Finally, Love Your Melon is a great example of a company that started with a simple product/niche but eventually expanded into a larger market.

My Father – The Reason I want to be an Entrepreneur

This post is more on the sentimental side, so excuse my soppy story. The most incredible entrepreneur that I know is my father. My father was in the military for nine and a half years  during the gulf war and worked overseas for Boeing in Saudi Arabia for five and a half years. At the time he married my mother, my father had a high school degree and no outside business experience. My father promised my mother that she would never have to work when they had children so that my mother could be a stay at home mom. My father returned to the states when I was one and a half and my brother was two months from being born. He started working as a financial planning business while also pursing a bachelor’s degree at Philadelphia biblical university, now Cairn. He worked about 90 hours a week from the time I was 2 till the time I was 8 on growing his business and pursuing his degree.

It was a rough time for our family, as many entrepreneurial businesses are not extremely profitable in the beginning stages. I remember times where my father would skip meals and the bills were paid over the phone at the last moment possible. This is the less beautiful sides of entrepreneurship. Many people do not entirely understand the downsides to being an entrepreneur. It becomes even tougher to be an entrepreneur when you have a family to support and people relying on you.

My father worked so hard and somehow still managed to be home with our family on Sundays. My father continued to grow his business and got his Bachelor of Science in biblical studies in 2005, when he was 39 years old. He continued to pursue various accreditation and grow his clientele and increase his business. Currently, my father has his own firm with three employees and is a certified financial planner for many interesting clients. He is proof to me that starting your own business takes a lot of time and hard work, nothing comes easy. My goal in this is to somehow make him proud with my business endeavors and one day work alongside him in the business.
