Sean Whalen

Sean Whalen is the founder of AlterG. The AlterG treadmill is an anti gravity treadmill, that was invented in 2005. Sean and his father developed the treadmill in their family garage using NASA technology which uses air pressure to make the user feel weightless. The treadmill was initially developed so that astronauts could exercise in space, but it started being used in other ways too.

The AlterG treadmill is used to this day by many professional sports teams as well as professional athletes in generally. Tom Brady himself has purchased two of the AlterG treadmills for himself. Even Olympic training centers use Sean’s treadmills.

While the use of the AlterG treadmills in sports has been a fantastic discovery, the treadmills have begun being used for physcial therapy by rehabilitation centers across the United States. Sean’s work with AlterG has not only benefited himself, with his $10 million net worth, but he has managed to make a change in areas of fitness and medical practices.

Sean is an extremely successful entrepreneur, not only because of the money he has made, but also because of the changes he’s been able to make in the world. I admire Sean for his hard work and for what he has done for others. Sean Whaler turned a way to help astronauts exercise into a form of physically therapy used by some of the most famous athletes and some of the biggest medical facilities in the world.

A.J. Fernadez Cigar Company

A.J. Fernandez was born in March 1979, and began his cigar operations in the country of Nicaragua. Unlike many other cigar manufactures A.J. Fernandez, who is known as “Tabacalera Fernandez”, in his home country, Fernandez had humble beginnings. When Fernandez first began his company, he began with only six cigar rollers in a small, worn down facility in Esteli, Nicaragua. Here he began to make his name not by making his own cigar brand or cigar lines, but he helped other cigar manufacturers to produce some of their best selling cigar lines.

Fernandez helped the biggest name in all of cigars, Rocky Patel. This is unique to A.J. Fernandez because he was able to learn from some of the most successful cigar manufactures in the world, before he began his own cigar operations. This allowed Fernandez to take the time to develop a sound business plan before beginning his cigar brand, and it gave him the time to focus on the quality and marketing of his successful cigar lines.

After years of working in the cigar industry A.J. Fernandez began two incredibly popular cigar brands: Man O War, and Diesel. These brands helped Fernandez become a household name in the cigar industry, and have become some of the most successful brands in the cigar market. Fernandez’s many brands produce sales of almost 9 million cigars per year and sell to over 30 countries world wide.

Fernandez also revived a discontinued cigar brand in 2010, which was started by his grandfather in 1959 during the infamous Cuban Revolution in order to pay tribute to his grandfather.

By taking the time to learn from other cigar leaders, Fernandez was able to perfect an effective business strategy, which helped him launch his cigar empire. A.J. Fernandez also “bucked the trend” of many other cigar manufacturers by taking the time to perfect his craft, and develop target markets and good marketing strategies. Fernandez’s story is an inspirational story of how hard work and thinking outside the box can lead to great success.

Jack Ma and Alibaba

Jack Ma: Founder of Alibaba

Jack Ma’s story of rags-to-riches as a young man from China is one of the most inspiring entrepreneurial stories there is. Ma was born in Hangzhou, China to a poor household. As a young boy Ma always wanted to learn English, because he sensed that the language would one day be important on a national level. After failing two entrance exams, Ma ultimately made it to college and graduated from Hangzhou Teacher’s Institute and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. Ma then worked as an english teacher at a university prior to launching his entrepreneurial career.

Upon visiting America in 1995, Ma discovered the Internet and was in awe at the potential of the World Wide Web. Ma also noticed the rise in popularity of online selling by American companies, and realized that China did not have anything similar. After returning to China, Ma became inspired by what he saw in America and drew up a plan to create a Chinese e-commerce company, which he called, “Chinapage.”

After a failed attempt at growing Chinapage to the scale and power that Ma wanted, he left the company and took a job in the Chinese government. Ma made many connections in the government, but still had a grand vision for creating an e-commerce company in China, and left his government job in 1999 to start Alibaba. Ma’s goal was to create a company that would empower small and medium businesses in China to facilitate international trade without the intervention of the government. Ma was initially denied by silicon valley investors before receiving funding from both Softbank and Goldman Sachs to help fund Alibaba. After many years of Alibaba remaining non profitable, the company’s business model prevailed and the company overtook eBay as the largest e-commerce site in China.

While Alibaba faced many challenges throughout its history, the company was able to overcome those challenges to become china’s largest e-commerce site and one of the largest in the world. Alibaba faced lack of funding, slow growth, lack of an international appeal, and much more. In an interview, Ma stated: “Instead of learning from other people’s success, learn from their mistakes. Most of the people who fail share common reasons(to fail) whereas success can be attributed to various different kinds of reasons.” This is incredibly profound, as one of the most important lessons entrepreneurs are taught is that failure is ok. Ma exemplifies what it means to show perseverance, entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity. I learned from reading about Ma that failure is ok, and that you might have to fail many times before you succeed. I also learned how important it is to show perseverance, and trust in your business plan.

Million Dollar Business, 0 Advertising

Josh Elledge is someone who has done something in the business world that many people think to be impossible or only dream of. He has created a multi-million dollar business using less than $500 in advertising. He does this by using a completely different approach, authority. He claims that when you have authority, advertising is not necessary. This would definitely seem true because Josh has got himself in the media more than 2000 times. Josh has taken what was thought of to just be an internet concept, and turned it into “a multi-million dollar miracle.”

Josh started off very poor. The reason for this is because he attempted to start 6 different businesses, and failed every time. With very little options, he started a business that helped with financial saving. He knew a lot about this due to having to cut expenses when his businesses started failing. One thing he learned in this process was that exposure was key to expanding ones business. So Josh began to cold call everyone he could think of, who might create some exposure to his business. Finally, a small christian radio station allowed him some air time. This was all he needed to get his business under way. After this, he wrote for a newspaper on couponing which became a huge success. This gave him the exposure he needed and he quickly turned it into authority and became a very successful influencer.  From there he has expanded even farther and is always looking for new ventures and ways to expand his authority.

Is that Money I Smell?

For a young teen a silly joke became a money making venture. Hart Main’s sister was selling candles as a fundraiser for school and he said that they smelled too girly. He then had the idea to create manly scented candles. His little snarky comment has turned in to a success. Main has flavors such as campfire, bacon, fresh cut grass, grandpa’s pipe, and more. He had an initial investment of 100 dollars and his parents invested 200 dollars. He now has sold 9,000 units and is in 60 stores around the nation. Main has decided to keep to his studies mostly due to the fact that he’s only 14. Maybe one day his idea for the ManCans’ will take off and be see in Walmarts. It’s so cool to see how these young teens can find ways to create small successful businesses.

Benjamin Pasternak

Benjamin Pasternak was born September 6, 1999 in Sydney, New South Wales, AU. What made Ben famous was a smartphone game that he created in class when he was 14, it was called Impossible Rush and he sold it later for $200. This game became a huge hit which led to him creating a second smartphone game, Impossible Dial, which also was a huge success and was sold for $85,000.  After these two games Ben came up with Flogg, a social media specifically for teens that allowed them to sell and buy things on. Flogg was for a short time the no. 1 trending app in the United States, Germany, and Australia. After the success of Flogg Ben dropped out of high school and moved to Manhattan. In 2016 Monkey, an App that Ben co-founded, was launched; it was an app for teenagers to meet people through a short video chat. Monkey hit no.1 on the US Apple App Store. In 2017 Monkey was sold to Holla for an unknown amount. In 2018 Ben started a new company called NUGGS which engineered a vegan “chicken nugget”; This company is aimed at ending factory farming. Now Ben is still working on NUGGS and we have yet to see if it will be a success but from what he has accomplished in his past I believe he has a high chance of creating another successful product. If Ben Pasternak does not inspire you, I don’t know who will, he created three new apps and is the CEO of his own business at age 20. That is inspiring.

Rachel Zietz

Rachel Zietz was a 13-year-old when she founded her company Gladiator Lacrosse. This was the result of her being unsatisfied with the quality and price of her lacrosse equipment. Because of this Rachel decided to start a company that would sell highly durable and well-priced lacrosse equipment. This was how Gladiator Lacrosse was formed. When Rachel was still in school, she focused on improving her skills as an Entrepreneur and well-seasoned CEO of her own company. What makes this company especially unique is the personal side of it. Because Rachel herself plays lacrosse she knows the importance of inexpensive and high-quality equipment. While being the CEO of Gladiator Lacrosse Rachel is also enrolled in Princeton University. As well as that She appeared on Shark Tank when she was 15 although she didn’t get a deal, but the sharks were impressed. Rachel Zietz is an inspiration balancing life, school and being a CEO of her own company at such a young age.

Shelby Wildgust- Naked Networking

Shelby Wildgust is a Philly native who is full of infectious energy. She loves all things from Philly Sports (GO EAGLES!) to rock climbing, but Shelby is most interested in supporting, mentoring, and coaching young female business leaders into becoming the best and most authentic versions of themselves. While working very closely with Shelby this summer, my favorite thing about her was her go-getter attitude that inspired me not to give up on my dreams for my summer job as a Branch Manager for Vector Marketing and Cutco Cutlery.

Shelby has always loved taking ideas and bringing them to life. In high school, she even started her own jewelry business called Treasures for Tuition to raise money for college. When Shelby was 18 years old, she found Cutco/Vector Marketing. She says she “has no idea what [she] was getting [herself] into”. After being quite successful and experiencing a lot of growth, she ran two branch offices, which is a summer only office that a college student runs while he or she is on summer break. Shelby claims that working for Cutco and having two very successful summer offices, equipped her with many skills which includes how to be resourceful, how to handle rejection, how to build relationships, how to communicate effectively, how to ask for what she wants, how to be a professional, how to public speak, and the list goes on. After graduating college in 2016, Shelby went into Corporate America but realized that she wanted to go back to Vector in a different role. She coaches and leads young individuals running a branch office.

In 2016, Shelby gave a TED Talk called “The Masks We Hide Behind”, where she opened up about her struggles growing up and wanting to fit in which sparked an interest in the idea that women wear masks. She attended a few events that encouraged women to becoming the best versions of themselves and thought she wanted to create something like this, but she wanted to stand out from any average networking event. So, she took the idea of women hiding behind masks and tied it into the idea of networking. In January of 2019, Shelby made the decision to become more involved in the Philly community of young women and she started Naked Networking.

The idea: “Women only. No Make Up. No Judgement.”

And it is exactly that. Upon arrival, women go through a “makeup removal station” where they remove the “masks” they were wearing all day.

Since it’s debut, Naked Networking has hosted two events. In June, Shelby hosted her first Naked Networking event. Thirty were in attendance (SOLD OUT!), there were two panelists, and she had multiple sponsors. At the second event, she saw familiar faces, which proved that women were getting a lot out of the experience. There were also 70 (SOLD OUT AGAIN!) in attendance, two panelists, and, again, multiple sponsors. Shelby and Naked Networking has been featured in Philly Mag and CBS 3.

The future of Naked Networking is bright. The next event will be held on October 29th, 2019 with 75 women in attendance. Shelby is also planning a large scale event with 200 women as an all day event. She also is expanding to a new city, but she wouldn’t tell me where yet, as it will be announced at her October 29th event.

Shelby is just getting started as she aspired to help more and more women “remove the mask” and feel more confident in themselves and being “exactly who they are meant to be.” Naked Networking has empowered so many young women already and is making strides to create a lasting impact on so many lives in the near future.

Fraser Doherty – SuperJam

In 2004, fourteen-year-old Fraser Doherty of Scotland began a remarkable career. It all started when his grandmother taught him her jam recipe, which contained 100% fruit. In 2007 (using his grandmother’s recipe), Doherty took his jam company, SuperJam, to Waitrose – a UK supermarket company. Doherty went on to become the youngest person to ever supply a large supermarket chain.

By the time Fraser was seventeen, he had generated over $750,000 in sales. Furthermore, he has sold millions of cans of jam since the company’s inception. In addition to this, Doherty went on to invest in many charitable projects and organizations. He has hosted hundreds of free “SuperJam Tea Parties” for the elderly and has invested much of his time into community beekeeping projects.

Fraser has also written many books, from business how-to guides to cookbooks. He has also received many awards, such as the “Enterprising Young Brit of the Year” award in 2004 and the “Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year” award in 2007.

In 2013, Doherty co-founded Beer52, the world’s largest beer club. It has become one of the must successful startups in Scotland, with more than 200,000 customers. Beer52 also produces the UK’s top craft beer magazine, Ferment.

What started as a fun experience with his grandmother has radically transformed Fraser’s life. All it took was acting upon a unique idea: a jam made with 100% fruit.

Warfighter Cigars

Warfighter Tobacco Company is a cigar manufacturer that was started in 2006 by military veterans Chris Ferdico, Scott Jansen, Bryan Bettey, Jon Simons, and Vincent. The mission of Warfighter Tobacco Company is to make really good cigars and to help support fellow military veterans and their families. The company was initially founded By Scott Jansen while on the set of Range 15 with other military members. One of his friends mentioned to him how other military veterans were succeeding in making various clothing, coffee, and outdoors products, because they were able to tailor their products around a military aesthetic, because of their prior experience serving overseas. With the help of other companies owned by veterans, like Black Riffle Coffee Company and Article 15 Clothing, Warfighter Tobacco had a limited cigar release of about 300 units, which was met with positive reviews from friends, family, and fellow military veterans alike.

They then found a great cigar manufacturer in the nation of Nicaragua, which provided much needed jobs to many impoverished members of the local community. Then, in July of 2017, at the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Tobacco Retailers Association Convention, the newly formed Warfighter Tobacco Company was officially unveiled to the masses, and to the surprise of everyone that started the company, people not only loved the cigars, but they loved the people, mission, and brand of the company.

Warfighter Cigars was the first mainstream tobacco company that is owned by veterans and they base their whole brand around a military aesthetic and vibe. This is extremely unique in the cigar industry, and their unique cigar band designs as well as cigar names help them stand out from the crowd.

The Warfighter Tobacco Company is also dedicated to helping former veterans through their involvement in various charitable and volunteer programs for military veterans and their families. They also employ many military veterans with reliable, well-paying jobs.

By having a unique mission, a great story, as well as an innovative cigar brand, Warfighter Tobacco Company was able to revolutionize the cigar market through creative branding and by creating a company that has great cigars, made by great people, with a great company mission and vision.
