Zollipops

In 2014, Alina Morse asked her dad a simple question to solve a prevalent issue among children: cavities. She asked, “Dad, why can’t we make a lollipop that’s good for your teeth?” This question sparked the creation of Zollipops. With help from her father and a significant amount of research, this 7 year old entrepreneur was able to make this dream a reality. But what would she call these healthy lollipops? Her little sister Lola came up with Zollipops and Alina loved it. Zollipops are a sugar free, vegan, smart, organic, and “yummy’ candy. They are made with the sweeteners xylitol, erythritol, stevia and other natural ingredients which are healthier alternatives to sugar. They also help to neutralize acidity in the mouth, which prevents bacteria that causes tooth decay to grow.

Last year, Alina made $70,000 in sales and entered the kids’ version of “Shark Tank.” Even through this remarkable success, Alina is not quite finished yet. She’s currently working on getting Zollipops into dentist offices and schools across the country!

Andrew Mason – Groupon and More

Andrew Mason is most well known for founding Groupon, the coupon program, but that was not his first business, nor his last. Andrew grew up in a suburb of Pittsburgh called Mount Lebanon, PA. At age 15 he started Bagel Express, a Saturday morning delivery service. After college and a few jobs, he started The Point, a company that helped groups connect about issues they cared about. He decided that The Point was too complex, so it was then boiled down Groupon. Eric Lefkofsky, Andrew’s former employer, gave him $1 million in seed money to help get the idea going, and it became a huge success. In 2011, Groupon projected that they were on track to make $1 billion faster than any company ever. Unfortunately for Andrew, the company was not doing as well as investors thought it should, so he was ousted from the CEO position, and from the company in 2013.
It was not long before Andrew had another business idea, called Detour. It is a company that makes smartphone audio tours. They raised $11 million in investments, and the company is still around today, even though Andrew had another business idea and moved on from that company. Through Detour, they had to edit large amounts of audio, and it took a lots of time. To make the process go easier and take less time, Andrew developed a business and program called Descript. The program transcribes audio files and matches up the word with the place it appears in the file, making it much easier to edit. His goal is to make it as easy to edit audio as it is to edit photos and videos on a smartphone app.
From these examples, we can see that Andrew did not just end up running forever with his first idea. It changed over time to fit the needs of people. The Point developed into Groupon, and Detour developed into Descript. This is a good example for us all – to keep looking for new opportunities or better ways to help people, and to form our ideas around that.

This company was started by Chandler Sterling. Frustrated with the lack of a good beard oil for self grooming, Sterling set out to start his own company to fix that problem. Using very natural resources he came up with his product and from there started the California Beard Company. Over time his company has grown into a well recognized and respected company, that keep putting out new products all the time. And one big thing that drives Sterling is his love for green. Mixpanel

Suhail Doshi has created a successful data provision company called Mixpanel. Initially Doshi saw his career reaching its peak at a $90,000 software engineer job for Intel. This quickly changed when he threw out the old Steve Job’s notion that companies know interface design better than the consumer. Mixpanel provides an assortment of consumer behavior analytics to BMW, OpenTable, and Intuit. Doshi started the company at the age of 20 in 2009 and quickly achieved $40 million in revenue. During his internship at Slide, he realized the usefulness of in-house analytics and was inspired to create his own company. Doshi observed other companies like Zynga working on analytics software and knew he had to act fast in order to keep up with competition like google analytics. The first few years were very challenging, but fortunately they were able to make it into the acclaimed startup accelerator, Y Combinator, and gain recognition. Gaining venture capital was also very difficult during the recession with only two of 13 venture capitalist willing to invest. Mixpanel has come a long way since then. Data products now guide design at silicon valley and the company employs 300 people with $77 million raised to date. Doshi says there is a constant need to evolve and that a 10 year old company is a whole different beast than a start-up. Teams must work together and be willing to adapt to new, creative solutions.

A Young Success

An entrepreneur who has achieved high levels of success at an early age is Ricky Gutierrez. He was born on January 2, 1995 in Arizona. As a kid, he sold all kinds of small items to his friends and peers at school, which inspired Ricky’s gravitation to entrepreneurship. He attended Arizona State University for entrepreneurship and technology management. By the age of 20, he bought his own house. Ricky founded the company TechBud Solutions, which is a peer to peer groups that is designed to help motivated individuals stay connected and allows them to assist each other with their endeavors. He has also gained a large YouTube following of nearly 400k subscribers over the course of several years. This is where he shares advice about his expertise on penny stock investing, real estate, and even cryptocurrency. Ricky is a prime example that major success does not have to come later in life.

Whether You Love or Hate Her, She’s a Billionaire

Kylie Jenner is known for a plethora of things; however, Kylie Cosmetics is what truly made her go from a rich teen to a young billionaire. At the age of 19, Kylie Jenner launched her own cosmetics line by the name of Kylie Cosmetics. In 2016, she released her famous lip kits which took social media by storm. With the popularity of her lip kits, she decided to launch her own brand.

The new brand incorporated eye-shadow palettes, blushes, highlighters, and of course more lip products. The brand continuously puts out new collections. Recently, the Halloween collection and her birthday collection were released. These collections were highly reviewed and took over the YouTube platform. She appeared on the platform for the first time on the James Charles channel, one of the largest beauty channels on YouTube, to preview her Halloween collection.

Kylie is 21, now, and was just on the Forbes magazine cover as a “self-made billionaire.” The article explained how Kylie created a beauty empire in just two years. This article created controversy due to the use of the phrase “self-made.” People say that she was raised in a rich family that gave her the finances and resources to create Kylie Cosmetics. Others believe that she was self-made due to her making all the major decisions within the company. Image result for forbes kylie

Despite where one may fall on the controversy, Kylie Jenner is a billionaire because of Kylie Cosmetics. She is a millennial entrepreneur because of Kylie Cosmetics, as well.

Luv AJ Leading in Social Media Marketing

Most people think innovation as a quality only new businesses or new products require. However, one entrepreneur showed that innovation is important of all areas of business. Amanda Thomas, founder of the Luv AJ Jewelry Line, demonstrated innovation not only in her product but in how she marketed it.

Image result for amanda thomas luv ajThomas created her jewelry line in 2005 when she was 16 years old, her after school obsession becoming a profitable business with unique accessories. While at Fred Segal, she randomly met a buyer who wanted her jewelry in all of their stores around the country. That was the first step for Luv AJ on the road of becoming a global empire. A student under famous designers such as Rachel Pally, Christina Ehrlich, and Estee Stanley, Thomas learned how to best create unique jewelry that appeals to lots of different crowds. Now, Luv AJ has boutiques all over the country and the jewelry is popular with a lot of celebrities. People like Beyoncé, Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, and Emma Roberts all praise Luv AJ and the unique heavy chains and spikes unique to that line.

While Luv AJ demonstrates tons of unique innovation, it’s Thomas’ intense marketing work Image result for amanda thomas luv ajthat really shows an entrepreneurial mind. Forbes describes Thomas as a “digital native”, manipulating social media trends to bring her designs and products to the forefront of the market. From the start, Thomas used Instagram to immerse her brand in the world. She uses her talent for design to create an amazing Instagram page for her products that visual appealing. “Our Instagram grid is a mix of close up shots of ears, necks, and hands, lookbook and campaign imagery, photos of influencers and celebrities wearing the jewelry, and flat lays,” she says.

Thomas knows what an amazing platform social media is for marketing. Her unique photos and advertisements have vastly increased Luv AJ’s marketing reach. However, Thomas doesn’t stop there. She has worked hard to use different influential people to promote her product online, like models, singers, actresses, and so on. To best describe her innovative method of advertisement, she says, “Each season, we work with over 200 girls with a wide range of followers, and we gift them jewelry in exchange for a post and tag. With their tags, we get our product in front of new audiences with every single post.” Thomas isn’t picky about the number of followers or how popular the influencer is. She believes that someone with 50k followers opens up markets the same amount as one with 500k followers.

Image result for luv aj beyonceThomas’ innovation with social media marketing and networking has paid off, big time. Yet she doesn’t rest on her success. She continues to build new relationships to increase her reach. Sometimes she directly messages influences to build a relationship, sometimes she gets referrals from others she’s worked with. Either way, she strives to create partnerships with new people to open up new markets. With products at $100 or lower, her line is spiking in popularity.

Thomas continues to innovate with her online presence to make buying even easier. “First, every single image we post is tagged to a product that is directly synced to our Shopify store. You can click-to-buy on a post and checkout on your mobile device. The second way is through the “Link in Bio” which leads you to our SHOP ALL collection. The third way you is through the app Four Sixty which makes our Instagram feed shoppable on our e-commerce store. Other tools we use that add efficiency are PlanolyVSCO, and Repost,” she says. Clearly these tools are working, as Luv AJ’s global empire expands and Thomas brings her unique jewelry to more markets. That’s true innovation: not only creating a new product but new ways of selling it.

The True Grove City College Entrepreneur

With the Entrepreneurship program winning the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Model Emerging Program Award, Entrepreneurship is a hot topic on campus. Professor English, Executive Director of  the Center for Entrepreneurship + Innovation (E+I) at Grove City College said, “The award has already generated greater awareness and interest in our Entrepreneurship program. I was mobbed after the gala with inquiries and requests from other schools and programs to see our center and collaborate with us. It’s an exciting time for Entrepreneurship at Grove City College.” It is truly an exciting time for Grove City College.

Grove City College students, and students from all over the nation now look to Grove City for its entrepreneurial expertise. With an excellent entrepreneurship program, many people see great ideas and creations in future generations. However, many people fail to recognize the greatest entrepreneur in Grove City’s history: Dr. Issac C. Ketler. Like most entrepreneurship students at Grove City, Ketler (who had no entrepreneurial training himself) was filled with excitement to create and maintain his own business. Contrary to GCC students, Ketler desired to start his own college, originally called Pine Grove Normal Academy, but most of us know it as Grove City College.

Fresh out of National Normal School, a college specifically for aspiring teachers, Ketler instituted Pine Grove Normal Academy (Grove City College) at 23 years old in 1876. The first year’s class was filled to the brim with 26 students, but when people heard about Pine Grove’s unique mission, attendance steadily began to rise. By the 1900’s, the attendance of Pine Grove skyrocketed to over 650 students. How did these numbers increase so quickly, one may ask? Well, Ketler did what any excellent entrepreneur would do: He came up with a unique selling proposition. His vision was to create a Christian, educational society that transcends all denominations and belief systems.

Without any type of degree or class on how to start a college, Isaac Ketler showed confidence and brilliance in instituting a now famous conservative college where students today can pursue their passions. Whether one is an education major or an electrical engineer major, Grove City College is a non-government controlled environment where students learn about Christianity in tandem to their classes of choice. Grove City College is truly a place “Where faith and freedom matter.”

“Get Your Textbooks Here!”: A new way to approach those burdensome costs

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis are two rising entrepreneurial stars in the world of college textbooks. Often, students are looking to buy used textbooks at reasonable prices, and, just as often, students cannot find used books at reasonable prices. Many have attempted to solve this problem, few have succeeded. Van Maderen and Davis, however, have managed to develop a profitable company off of this problem.

Their company is called Perlego. Van Malderen and Davis both already had entrepreneurial experience, prior to their team-up. Perlego can be likened to Netflix and Spotify, but rather than movies and music, Perlego is an online platform for buying, storing, and reading educational e-books. In order to bring in revenue, Van Malderen and Davis charge a monthly subscription fee, similar to Netflix and Spotify. Their company has already grown to twelve members, and their site has already amassed works from over 1,000 publishers.

Van Malderen and Davis have shown incredible insight into how this generation is so tech-dependent. With that in mind, their idea heavily relevant to this generation. So often, people have been transitioning businesses to online platforms. As college students know, textbooks are a burdensome expense without many cheap, online options. Perlego addresses that gap in the textbook market by offering a solution that makes obtaining multiple textbooks for a low-cost, easy.

I am inspired by this innovation because it is very applicable to my own life-experience. As a college student, books are burdensome, and this solution is very practical. There is a misconception that entrepreneurs have to have a break-through, unheard-of idea. This is not necessarily break-through nor unheard-of. Van Malderen and Davis took what they were experiencing and found a practical, not too far-fetched solution. Their intuition is inspiring and has prompted me to look into my surroundings for practical solutions.
