Hazel Findlay: Pushing Boundaries, Mentally and Physically

Hazel Findlay has been at the forefront of climbing for nearly three decades, starting her journey at just six years old on the limestone cliffs of Pembrokeshire, Wales. A former British junior champion, Hazel made a bold decision at the age of sixteen to leave behind competitive climbing in favor of pursuing professional rock climbing. Since then, she has made history, becoming the first woman to climb a British trad route at v15, the first British woman to sport climb 8c, and the first woman to free climb (climb without ropes) El Capitan in Yosemite—a feat she has now accomplished four times. She has been the first to ascend climbs in some of the world’s most remote and challenging locations, including Greenland’s big walls.

While Hazel’s achievements in climbing are legendary, she is equally passionate about the mental side of the sport. With a deep interest in psychology, Hazel trained as a coach to help others overcome the psychological barriers that often accompany climbing and other high-performance activities. Through her company, Strong Mind, Hazel offers a range of online courses and resources aimed at helping individuals manage fear, build resilience, and perform at their best. Helping Young People Achieve Their Dreams as an Entrepreneur Who Has Achieved Hers

Erin McGoff was in the midst of getting her degree to American University when she started realizing her talent in professional advising. People seemed drawn to her for help with applying to jobs through resumes, interviews, and beyond, and McGoff enjoyed every minute of it.

However, this prospect was left unexamined as she graduated and became an editor and director of films, including award-winning Amazon film “This Little Land of Mines.” McGoff was supported through winning various awards, including AU SoC Woman of the Year Award and the International Reporting Fellowship award from the Pulitzer Center, and has worked with many mainstream companies, including National Geographic and Google.

However, McGoff saw an opportunity in the surge of popularity with TikTok during the pandemic to fill the gap in a lack of career advice being readily available to those who needed it. She started posting tips on navigating the professional world, including a humorous element to appeal to a young target audience she thought might benefit from such advice as her friends did and which she delighted in as a young adult. Her main channel is deemed AdviceWithErin and exists over several channels, boasting 845,000 followers YouTube and 2 million on Instagram.

Scrolling through McGoff’s YouTube account, users are met with videos detailing anything from “How To: Negotiate Your Salary in a Job Offer” to “How to Deal with a Rude Person (in work and life)” to “Cabin Tour: building a TINY HOUSE (325 sqft) | Update #3,” showing a diverse pool of content that appeals to many different demographics within her target audience of those seeking advice in entering the professional world and those just generally interested in her channel. McGoff is an exemplary example of someone who kept a skillset in her back pocket and acted on it from a mindset of openness and passion whenever she saw an opportunity to do so.

Erin Smith- Founder of FacePrint

Erin Smith a nine teen year old girl, thought unlike anyone else. She was watching a video of a guy named Michael Fox, and from that video, Smith had some great ideas, and she couldn’t get those ideas off her mind. Her analysis of it was “Whenever a Parkinson’s patient would laugh or smile, it came off as really emotionally distant.” Smith took this and reached out to clinicians and caregivers to ask about this, and she found out that they have seen similar facial expressions from their patients. This was all before a Parkinson’s diagnosis was made. Smith who is a science enthusiast grew up doing experiments in her own kitchen. She wanted to make a change so people could be diagnosed with a disease, so she got to work and started to build a diagnostic system that was called FacePrint. This is really cool to see, as Smith saw a problem with a laugh or a smile, she knew there was a issue and that she needed to make a change to help these people out. She innovated in a special way to help this generation with a serious problem. Face Print is a selfie stick that captures changes in facial expressions over time to help catch disorders like Parkinson’s.  Smith hopes that FacePrint becomes a tool that diagnoses and monitors the disease. As of now, her creation has an 88 percent accuracy rate and that is nearly 7 percent more than regular tools. Smith has been receiving funds from Michael Fox foundation and pharmaceutical companies. Her technology is going under trial at Standford University. Smith has done some many great things with this product and to sum it up she had said this “I really want to optimize for my personal learning,” and “as well as for the best way I can help shape and build the future of neurological and mental healthcare.” This is so amazing for a teenager to do. The fact that she is saving our generations health is just so awesome. She definitely fills for a girl with a mind like an entrepreneur but not only that, she wants to help everyone, that is so special.

Matt Mullenweg: WordPress

Has anyone here heard of Figma? I hadn’t heard of it until a few years ago. But If I were to ask if you have heard of Adobe, I bet many of you know what it is. Figma is a design platform that is a web-based design tool that allows users to create, share, and test digital products and services. It is often looped into the same group around designers when talking about Adobe and its many products. Figma’s founder Dylan Field was just 20 years old when he and his classmate Evan Wallace released it to the public. While Field was working as an intern for Flipboard and LinkedIn he was spotted to have great potential. Which they most certainly were not wrong. Against Fields’ parents’ wishes he decided to drop of college at Brown University to participate in the Thiel Fellowship program which led to him earning a $100,000 grant from Peter Thiel co-founder of PayPal.

Future Trends

It took 4 years of testing and development before it was released to market in 2016. Figma has a flexible feature set and a freemium pricing scale that helped take some market away from Adobe. Figma saw great success during the pandemic due to so many having much more free time to learn about things and software that interested them. Figma soon grew to 850 employees and was set to be bought by Adobe for $20 billion. However, this deal soon fell through in 2023 and both companies agreed to terminate their merger agreement. As of the summer of 2024 Figma was on track to hit $700 million annual recurring revenue. Nevertheless, Figma is a huge powerhouse when it comes to general design and I have found it is incredibly powerful at website design, something that think Adobe is lacking. It is a very great resource to know both design software’s because there are things that one does better than the other.

At the young age of seventeen, Katie Carson started a business. It all started in a soap making class. Katie was inspired by that class to create her own business out of soap. That is where her passion and love for soap began. Obsessed with knew scents, smells, and soaps, Katie dove into her imagination and began to create creative soaps. On her website, Katie states that her mission is to love people through soap art. She demonstrates this through all of her social media platforms by creating content that is engaging and humorous. Royalty soaps is unique because of its owner, Katie Carson and her view on the world of soap making. She sees soap as a way to positively impact others. One quality that has helped Katie Carson to excel in her career is her desire to always be genuine. Jessica Pegula: Ready 24

Jessica Pegula is a tennis player ranked 24 among WTA players.  She has played tennis since she was ten and struggled with skincare.  She tried so many products and could not find one that fit her.  Plus, her skin was struggling because there was too much going on.  She needed something that was for athletes, clean, and simple.  This led her to create her own skincare line.  Pegula had hip surgery and lots of time in her recovery.  In her downtime, she formed Ready 24.

Ready 24 has four lines: cleansers, essence water, moisturizer, and recovery skin products.  She worked with a company in her hometown and used focus groups to formulate, test, and refine her products.  She uses her own products and so do other tennis players!  She got Ready 24 into Wegmans, online, social media, and at tennis events.

Pegula said that it really hit her that she was really starting a business when she was making the labels for the products one day.  She told

Jessia Pegula’s parents also inspired and helped her.  They helped to provide the initial investment and continually offer feedback and ideas.  He dad is always full of ideas, and her mom knows how to make it a reality and take risks.

Pegula is driven by her own experiences.  Her story is similar to mine because I too had hip surgery and played tennis.  It is so hard to find the good in the midst of recovery.  Her life was tennis, and she could have been wallowing in her own self-pity, but instead she found a need and addressed it.  She used what was in front of her

as an opportunity.

With the help and support of her family and friends she turned this idea into a business and started selling them. Deciding to go on shark tank was one of the best choices she ever made. She rigorously prepared and made a massive effort to improve her presentation skills. The Sharks were impressed by her pitch, and they offered her a deal. The deal was $35,000 for 25% equity in wise pocket products. After this win, her company grew through new problems and challenges. The company started to use social media to grab interest in their products and carved out a unique space in the fashion world. The socks come in fun colors and patterns and in many stylish choices.
