She is currently 19 years old, married, and has started another business where she helps businesses and entrepreneurs grow and sell on social media. How did she become this successful? The answer is within her daily routine, discipline, and determination. Waking up early in the morning is no problem for her, so she wakes up at 2 am and starts her day. A day in the life of Ava Yuergens is the definition of productivity. You can watch her daily routine here. She works for an average of 15 hours a day and uses the nights to relax and do something fun with her fiancé. Her habits in high school were similar. Before school started, Ava would awake from her slumber at 4 am and read before school started! Ava has a thirst for knowledge, and she lets it consume her. When Ava was in high school, she would read books constantly. She would read about business, marketing, investing, and sales. At age 15 she started a real estate investing company with her boyfriend. The two of them got engaged when they were 16. Ava Yuergens is a fantastic example of where ambition can lead you. Ava’s Instagram profile is packed with business strategies, self-improvement hacks, and hundreds of ideas to help build your business. You can check out her Instagram profile here.  The best part is that Ava isn’t done. She wants to become more successful and read more books. Ava is a model for what young entrepreneurs could be. All you need is discipline, ambition, and determination to prove that anyone of any age can do anything.

Scents to Cents – Hart Main

Hart Main

At the age of 13, Hart Main embarked on a unique entrepreneurial journey by founding ManCans, a candle company with a distinctive twist – crafting “manly” scents and packaging them in recycled soup cans. What started as a playful comment about the “girly” scents of candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser turned into a thriving business venture that went far beyond his initial goal.

Hart’s initial motivation was to purchase a high-quality racing bike priced at $1,200. His parents encouraged him to fund the purchase himself, setting the stage for the creation of ManCans. The idea of masculine-scented candles was resurrected by Hart’s mother, Amy, and he used his $100 in savings to acquire supplies and a starter kit for candle making. The Main family’s kitchen became the candle-making laboratory, and from November 2010 to spring 2011, they produced their first 20,000 candles in-house.

“My goal was to buy the bike, then be done with it.”

But Hart had stumbled upon something that was bigger than the $1,200 bike. The early stage of the business was undoubtedly challenging. The kitchen was filled with piles of cans and candles, and the family’s living space transformed into a makeshift production facility. To source their containers, they began eating canned soup. As the candle production grew, they recruited friends and neighbors to help empty the cans, and soon they had the idea to donate the surplus soup to food banks. This act of giving was the birth of ManCans’ philanthropic mission.

In 2011, the Main family donated 200 cans of soup to a local soup kitchen, expecting the empty cans to last around five months. Their story garnered the attention of a Columbus news station, and soon, the Associated Press picked it up. This unexpected media coverage resulted in an overwhelming surge of orders for 4,800 candles from 1,600 customers. The family’s kitchen was no longer sufficient for their growing business, and they rented warehouse space and hired about five employees to help meet the demand. In January 2014, ManCans partnered with Beaver Creek Candle Co. in Lisbon, Ohio, for manufacturing and distribution, a partnership that continues to this day.

Not content with only catering to the male market, Hart expanded his business by launching SheCans, a candle line with scents targeting women. Both ManCans and SheCans candles are manufactured by Beaver Creek Candle Co. However, instead of donating soup, ManCans now contributes 75 cents from every candle sale to support soup kitchens in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan, recognizing that cash donations are often more valuable than food.

The Main family is directly involved in the creation of many of their candle scents, although some are suggested by customers. Notable scents include Fresh Cut Grass, Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Grandpa’s Pipe, and even Two-Stroke Engine. Perfumists in New Jersey work on scent development, mixing chemicals and sending samples to Hart until the aroma is perfected.

ManCans candles are now available in numerous locations across the United States, including McDonald Niklaus Framing in Dover and Kames Sports in North Canton. They can also be purchased online through the ManCans website. The success of ManCans not only supports the business but also helps feed the hungry and encourages young people to explore entrepreneurship at an early age.

To further his mission of promoting entrepreneurship among young people, Hart and his father, Craig, co-authored the book “One Candle, One Meal.” Each chapter of the book incorporates valuable business lessons Hart learned throughout his journey. Their aim is to inspire and educate the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Hart Main’s achievements are not limited to the candle business. Despite his early success, he has aspirations beyond the world of candles. Hart plans to attend Kent State University to major in economics with the goal of becoming a sports agent. His story exemplifies how a casual idea can evolve into a thriving business with a philanthropic mission, all while inspiring young entrepreneurs and giving back to the community. It’s a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and the willingness to seize unexpected opportunities.

Modern Plantsman – Shop for plants!

Rihana Barlage is the owner of a plant shop called “Modern Plantsman” that is a blooming business in downtown Wapakoneta, Ohio and had a grand opening in early April. Since her opening, people have come in and enjoyed looking at everything she has in her shop. Barlage has so many different things, beside any pot and plant you could image, like shirts, notebooks, stickers, signs, wall decor, plates, and so many more other things. I had gone to the Modern Plantsman over my Thanksgiving break, and it was so much fun walking through the shop and looking and finding so many different things, also not to mention the air was so refreshing in there because of all the plants. She also has an amazing and easily accessible online website where you can buy plants or anything online and then go and pick it up in the store. What makes her business unique is that she has a tab on her website called “The Makeover” is she can come to a place, like your work or a room in your home, that you want to liven up with plants and bring many options for you to choose that you can mix and match in your space and there is easy on the spot purchasing. It is so interesting that she mainly sells plants, but has so many other things in her shop and online. Her shop and website in innovating because there aren’t many places where you can get live indoor plants and be able to order them online.

Liz Zerby: Cupcakes by Liz

Elizabeth Zerby is a nineteen-year-old entrepreneur and is really only known in my hometown. I grew up with Liz and have seen first-hand how she has been able to grow her very own cupcake business. After experimenting with different recipes, Liz developed an incredible gluten free cupcake that can compete with the best gluten filled ones. She managed all this from her kitchen at home. After she developed her initial recipe, she was able to create more flavors and new ways to decorate her cupcakes. Liz uses Instagram and other social media platforms to advertise her products and communicate with customers. She serves cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, graduation parties, and many other events. Cupcakes by Liz may not be a common name for most people, but in Mansfield, Ohio it spoken of very highly. Her cupcakes are recognizable at any event for their presentation and flavor. Liz’s business has been going strong for many years now, but she has had to slow down her business as she attends college. Even so, I do not believe she will stop making cupcakes any time soon. Sometimes being an entrepreneur does not come with big name success, but with a small consistent business.

Sincerely Beloved – Small Business Out of Your Own Home

Blog Post #1

The owner of Sincerely Beloved is Rachel Sanchez and she is a family friend of mine. She creates appeal, stickers, keychains, and many more things to spread Christianity and include bible verses with each item. What is unique about her is that she is doing this out of her home and has gained a good following of people on Instagram and sells things through her Esty shop all by sharing her faith and inspiring others. Making an impact on others and spreading the love of God to others is what drives her. The Christian faith in every aspect of what she makes is what is interesting, and she switches up and makes different things instead of always selling the same things. Her ideas to always create new things allows her to grow and be an entrepreneur and by starting her business in her home makes it easier for her. By creating knew things and switching up her style every few months allows her ideas to be innovating. Her business inspires me to create my own Esty shop because she makes it look more convenient for her that she can create things. I have learned that you can create a business out of anything you can create and also spread Christianity and faith to others through these ideas.

Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia-Airbnb

Brian Chesky and a Joe Gebbia founded Airbnb in 2008.  They got the idea when there was a conference in town that completely booked all the nearby hotels.  They decided to take advantage of the circumstances and rent out air mattresses and space in their apartment to those who couldn’t find a hotel to make enough money to pay rent, this is where they got the name Air bed and Breakfast.  After their success, they decided to create a website that offered their apartment as an alternative to those that couldn’t book a hotel during the large conferences that were held in San Francisco.  After launching their website, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia traveled around the US to meet with users and promote their business to potential investors, it didn’t take long for them to see success.  Just one year later they had around 3,000 listings and only a few years after that, they also started to offer their services in foreign countries.  Now in 2022 Airbnb is a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of listing across the world.

These two entrepreneurs innovated the house rental industry by appealing to renters and being on average a cheaper option than hotels,  Airbnb is also starting to beat hotels in the hospitality sector as well. Back in 2008 they even made $30,000 selling presidential candidate themed cereal at conventions during the elections.

Floral Farm

Have you ever wanted to create your own flower bouquets?

Camden Kidwell is the leading example of a young entrepreneur. He is a recent homeschool high school graduate and instead of going to college this fall he took the entire spring and summer to create his own flower farm and bouquet business. He started Swallowdale Flowers in June of 2021, and named the business after swallows which nest in his family’s barn. Swallowdale Flowers is unlike any florist business due to the fact that the customers can walk around Camden’s garden and create their own bouquets using his flowers. He has provided his customers with the ability for them to customize their own bouquets, which is unlike any other flower farm or floral business since the vast majority offers only premade bouquet arrangements. He does make bouquets though, on a weekly basis which he sells at 6ixNorth, a local artisanal craft store in his hometown. Another unique feature is that he runs his business from home – outside – where customers can be in nature and experience what it is like to be on a farm.

Additionally, Camden has recently been asked by a local event planning company to collaborate with them on a wedding. An acquaintance asked Camden to make a corsage for his homecoming date at the local high school. Camden continues to grow his business and network through his community. He is an example of why one does not need to earn a degree to become an entrepreneur. Swallowdale Flowers is the definition of a startup business, because he never received any help beyond that from his father. Camden Kidwell’s story shows us that all it takes to become an entrepreneur is a willingness to be disciplined, take risks and have an imagination. He is an inspiration and a role-model.
