The ManCan Candles

Meet Hart Main, inventor of the ManCan Candles, not to be confused with the Man Can Candles Co. At the early age of 13, Hart was looking to buy a $1,200 bicycle after doing a triathlon on an old bike. After that, he wanted to get a real Trek bike, but his parents told him he had to buy it himself. In response to needing the money, Hart had teased his sister about the girly scents of candles she had been selling for a school fundraiser when he came upon the idea of making masculine candles for men. His mom encouraged him to make scents that would be more alluring to guys. At first, Main didn’t think much of the idea. He made scents he thought would appeal to men, like Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Grandpa’s Pipe, New Mitt, and Fresh Cut Grass to name a few. What makes his candles even more unique is that he makes them in soup cans, which speaks for in his name, ManCan Candles. He started in his kitchen, and soon after, found himself making candles at Beaver Creek Candle Co., and selling his candles across nearly 15o stores in the United Sates. He was making 20,000 in no time and has built the number to hundreds of thousands.

While his business is still running 10+ years later, Hart also wrote a small book with his father, encouraging other young entrepreneurs to try new things. Hart showed the power of a young mind by building such a business with little resources. His hard works shows in his ambitions of doing a triathlon at the age of 13, and then creating an entire business of candles. It goes without saying, anyone can be an entrepreneur if they apply themself to their ambitions.

Hart Main of ManCans Candles—A Spark of Inspiration in Innovation

Thirteen-year-old Hart Main’s inspiration for manly-scented candles struck when his sister Camryn sold candles to raise money for their school and he thought this selection was lacking in appeal to the male population. Straying from normalized scents like Egyptian cotton and toasted vanilla that Hart considered more feminine in nature, he dreamt up candles smelling of New York Style Pizza, Grandpa’s Pip, Sawdust, Campfire, New Mitt, Fresh Cut Grass, Coffee, and Bacon, the current breadth of the ManCans line. Hart turned a spiteful spin on his older sister’s production to a full-fledged business venture with the encouragement of his parents and a heart set on a $1,500 bike.

While this transformation required initial investments on the Harts’ part, a primary drive behind its growth has been how ManCans gives back to the community before the candles are even made. As indicated by the name, the candles are made in cans—soup cans, in fact, which Main buys, donating the soup to local soup kitchens and keeping the cans to package the candles. The business’ growth has led to several demands in production—the need for a larger space than the Mains’ kitchen and more hands on deck.

Main—who is now 26—eventually shifted production to the Beaver Creek Candle Company of Lisbon, Ohio, another effort to give back the community as a manufacturing company employing people with developmental challenges. ManCans are sold across the nation, and the vigor Main has demonstrated in driving his venture this far and into the hearts of people in his hometown and beyond show that it will be a long time—if ever—until this thriving business kicks the can.

Nic Bianchi: Bianchi Candle Co.

Nic Bianchi started Bianchi Candle Co. when he was 12 years old. He received a candle making kit and used his love for math and science to create great smelling candles that are all-natural. Each candle is hand poured and made of all-natural soy wax that burns longer and cleaner. These features distinguish his company from all other candle companies. He did not stop there. He expanded the brand to sell diffusers, inspirational candles and luxury candles. There are multiple stores across the country, but they are all still handmade. Bianchi donates some of his earnings to various organizations like the American Cancer Society, Partnerships 4 Kids and the Angels Among Us Society.

Nic is a great example of finding a niche market using the things he loves.

A 13-year-old’s Manly Candles

Hart Main’s entrepreneurial career started with a sibling rivalry. Hart used to tease his sister’s highly feminine and flowery smelling candles. Then Hart found a bike he really wanted but he ran into one small problem: the bicycle cost a whopping $1500. Inspiration grew in Hart’s middle-school brain, and he set out to design a manly-scented candle, tapping into an unreached market with creativity and intuition. Combining ingeniously repurposed soup cans, diligently crafted scents, and a creative brand name, ManCans was born.

The young teen sells strongly nostalgic, relaxing, and masculine candles. His scents include Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Fresh Cut Grass, and Grandpa’s Pipe. Hart’s candles are handmade in Lisbon, Ohio by a workforce largely comprised of people with special needs. His business has grown greatly exponentially, bringing his candles to every state and regularly makes six figures annually. Hart’s dedication and passion in his entrepreneurial venture is displayed in the compassionate aspects of his business. Committed to his local communities and the unmet needs of the poor, Hart donates part of his revenue to soup kitchens in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan. The Man Candle

Main man behind ManCans

Have you ever thought of candles smelling too girly? Do you think the candle market would explode (fragrantly) if men had a candle that made them feel even more masculine? Well, young Hart Main thought the same thing. Hart Main is the founder of ManCans. One day his twelve-year-old sister was selling candles for a school fundraiser. At the age of thirteen, Hart stated that the candles his sister were selling were too girly. He teased his sister about it. Unlike a normal sibling tease that fades away after a couple hours, this tease stuck with Hart. That was not the last time he thought about candles. After the initial tease, Hart realized that he had addressed a real issue. There are no manly candles! He started to think about it more and more and eventually conducted some research on the candle market. There was no one who had thought or created this idea before. He had a spot in the market! In 2011, Hart set out to create ManCans, the manly scented candle. With the help of his supporting parents, and money he had saved up, they created candles. They manufacture scents like bacon, dirt, campfire, sawdust, and fresh cut grass. These candles are not decorated the normal way. Instead of being properly placed inside a refined glass container, Hart placed his candles in old, recycled soup cans. Which gives them a rustic and homemade look. Hart donates part of his proceeds to soup kitchens in nearby states. Hart had massive success with his candles. He now sells his manly candles internationally. Who knew that a simple tease between siblings could turn into a revolutionary idea that is sold around the world.

Frenshe by Ashley Tisdale

In 2020, well known actor actress Ashley Tisdale, most known for her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical, created her first perfume line, Frenshe. Frenshe has taken over the perfume isle in all Targets, but what is Frenshe and why did Ashley create it?

The brand started when Ashley was trying to understand her relationship with wellness but got overwhelmed with how much information and products there were on the market. She says, “I found myself overwhelmed by how much I didn’t know—what’s in the products we’re using every day, how our gut health affects the rest of our body, and how to live a toxic-free life without going bankrupt.” Through asking this question her new brand was formed. She met with experts and really narrowed down what goes into a perfume and how can we make it better?

Frenshe has a variety of scents for just about anyone, with their most common scents being lavender cloud and casimire vanilla. As well as coming in lots of scents, the perfumes come in many different shapes and sizes to match whatever you may need.  One of Ashleys main goals was to make sure her brand was healthy and affordable. One 5 FL. OZ bottle of perfume costs $14.99, which in comparison to Bath and Body Works having similar products being 18.99, its obvious she achieved her goal of making her brand affordable.

Along with affordability, Ashleys other main goal was to make her products, “formulated with clean ingredients and rooted in the emotional power of scent, so feeling good is as simple as taking a breath.” She achieved this goal as well by using clean ingredients and only putting in what is needed into her perfumes. I personally have used a number of her products, and will absolutely continue to keep using, and promoting her brand!

ManCans

Hart Main was only 13 years old when he developed an idea that will soon launch into a successful business. After making fun of his younger sister for all of her girly smelling candles Hart decided to start trying to create manly scented candles. Hart decided to start this business because he wanted to buy a $1,200 Bike and he needed a way to make money. He came up with the clever name “ManCans” and he packages his product in what looks like soup cans. His products have a very minimalist and manly look but also present an element of fun with all of the goofy scents.

Hart’s entrepreneurial story shows the importance of motivation and how having a clear goal helps to stay driven and determined. Hart used his desire to buy the bike to help launch his business because it kept him productive and working towards his goal.

Hart created a vast majority of scents, some of them include “cigar, beer, and grandpa’s pipe.” These candles would make for a great and very funny gift to give a friend or maybe a dad for father’s dad. Hart’s entrepreneurial story proves that sometimes there is secret success hidden in the things others might think are silly or not profitable.

Although there wasn’t an obvious need for his product, Hart is still solving the problem of candles not having manly scent options. Some of the scents he created are very humorous like “Dirt” and “Grass” and you can see Hart’s funny personality displayed through his variety of manly scented options.

In addition, Hart uses his business to donate cans of soup to people who are starving. The slogan for his product is “one candle, one meal.” Hart displays selflessness by making it his mission to donate and help people who may be starving. Even though Hart’s business started from the desire to buy an expensive bike his whole idea has now pivoted to something that helps his community. Hart’s story also highlights the need to stay humble and he himself shares that one of his greatest rewards in starting his business was the entrepreneur experience he got.

Hart’s business is now very successful and some of his products are sold on the “Beaver Creek Candle Company” website. It is astonishing to hear this young boy’s story and see his innovative and creative mind in action in a selfless and unique way.

Hart Main- 13-year-old Scented Candle Genius

Hart Main, a 13-year-old who would tease his sister about girly scented candles, turned out to use that to spark up a very interesting business idea. Hart was very mature for such a young age; he came up with the name “ManCans” and he made a simple change in the scents to make it more manly so that it fulfilled his desires. His candles consist of many different scents, and they are created by using soup cans. His business has taken off and grown so much creating a lot of profit. The scented candles are sold in every state. Hart being a firm believer of giving back to the community, he donates to soup kitchens in multiple states across the country. This is very impressive for such a young entrepreneur, and it has spread country wide. With the help of Hart’s parents, this idea of his was able to be turned into a reality by selling manly scented candles to those in need. Hart Main

Hart Main of Man Cans

Candles are great; everybody loves them, but that has not always been the case for everyone. For the longest time, candles have been something considered only to be enjoyed by girls. However, when a young man named Hart Main made fun of his sister for liking “girly candles”, something changed in his mind that would change his life forever…

When he was just 13 years old, Hart started his own business in an effort to save up for a $1,200 bike, but the business became so much more than he could have ever imagined. After poking fun at his sister, saying that candles were meant for girls only, he came up with the idea to create his own scents that would appeal to a more masculine audience. So, Hart created his own candles with scents such as campfire, bacon, fresh-cut grass, grandpa’s pipe, and more. With a little help from his parents, he created his candles using soup cans, and decided to name his business ManCans, a rather clever play on words that perfectly conveys the company message. Although things started small, with most of the customer base being friends and family, Main began to see some rapid growth in his business endeavor. He began distributing to local stores in Ohio, and now sells his candles in over 150 stores across the country.

The business now grosses over $200,000 annually, and Hart went off to college to study economics at Kent State. Mr. Main also gives back to the community by donating a portion of his profits to local soup kitchens. He even donates soup cans to the local kitchens as well, which interestingly ties into his business model quite nicely!

Hart Main says he is grateful for everything he has learned in this entrepreneurial endeavor, and is excited to see how he can apply it to his life in the future.

Scents to Cents – Hart Main

Hart Main

At the age of 13, Hart Main embarked on a unique entrepreneurial journey by founding ManCans, a candle company with a distinctive twist – crafting “manly” scents and packaging them in recycled soup cans. What started as a playful comment about the “girly” scents of candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser turned into a thriving business venture that went far beyond his initial goal.

Hart’s initial motivation was to purchase a high-quality racing bike priced at $1,200. His parents encouraged him to fund the purchase himself, setting the stage for the creation of ManCans. The idea of masculine-scented candles was resurrected by Hart’s mother, Amy, and he used his $100 in savings to acquire supplies and a starter kit for candle making. The Main family’s kitchen became the candle-making laboratory, and from November 2010 to spring 2011, they produced their first 20,000 candles in-house.

“My goal was to buy the bike, then be done with it.”

But Hart had stumbled upon something that was bigger than the $1,200 bike. The early stage of the business was undoubtedly challenging. The kitchen was filled with piles of cans and candles, and the family’s living space transformed into a makeshift production facility. To source their containers, they began eating canned soup. As the candle production grew, they recruited friends and neighbors to help empty the cans, and soon they had the idea to donate the surplus soup to food banks. This act of giving was the birth of ManCans’ philanthropic mission.

In 2011, the Main family donated 200 cans of soup to a local soup kitchen, expecting the empty cans to last around five months. Their story garnered the attention of a Columbus news station, and soon, the Associated Press picked it up. This unexpected media coverage resulted in an overwhelming surge of orders for 4,800 candles from 1,600 customers. The family’s kitchen was no longer sufficient for their growing business, and they rented warehouse space and hired about five employees to help meet the demand. In January 2014, ManCans partnered with Beaver Creek Candle Co. in Lisbon, Ohio, for manufacturing and distribution, a partnership that continues to this day.

Not content with only catering to the male market, Hart expanded his business by launching SheCans, a candle line with scents targeting women. Both ManCans and SheCans candles are manufactured by Beaver Creek Candle Co. However, instead of donating soup, ManCans now contributes 75 cents from every candle sale to support soup kitchens in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan, recognizing that cash donations are often more valuable than food.

The Main family is directly involved in the creation of many of their candle scents, although some are suggested by customers. Notable scents include Fresh Cut Grass, Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Grandpa’s Pipe, and even Two-Stroke Engine. Perfumists in New Jersey work on scent development, mixing chemicals and sending samples to Hart until the aroma is perfected.

ManCans candles are now available in numerous locations across the United States, including McDonald Niklaus Framing in Dover and Kames Sports in North Canton. They can also be purchased online through the ManCans website. The success of ManCans not only supports the business but also helps feed the hungry and encourages young people to explore entrepreneurship at an early age.

To further his mission of promoting entrepreneurship among young people, Hart and his father, Craig, co-authored the book “One Candle, One Meal.” Each chapter of the book incorporates valuable business lessons Hart learned throughout his journey. Their aim is to inspire and educate the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Hart Main’s achievements are not limited to the candle business. Despite his early success, he has aspirations beyond the world of candles. Hart plans to attend Kent State University to major in economics with the goal of becoming a sports agent. His story exemplifies how a casual idea can evolve into a thriving business with a philanthropic mission, all while inspiring young entrepreneurs and giving back to the community. It’s a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and the willingness to seize unexpected opportunities.
