Smells Like a ManCan

When Hart Main was 13 years old, his little sister Camryn was selling candles for a school fundraiser. He remembers teasing her for the “girly scents” and saying that only women would buy her candles. This jovial teasing turned into a business idea later on when Hart was saving for a $1500 bicycle. In order to reach a larger crowd Hart created ManCans, candles scented to appeal to men as well. Instead of flowery, sweet scents, ManCans candles smell like a “fresh new baseball glove.”

Hart’s business idea was like no other, it was unique, and appealed to a new genre of people; for this reason, ManCans rapidly took off selling more than 300 candles a week.  “It started as a Joke; it really wasn’t meant to turn into anything serious” says Hart. Thanks to his mother’s encouragement, his jokes became reality. “Even if it sounds like they’re joking, if their idea sounds like something they can do, by all means, I tell them to go for it,” Amy, Hart’s mom, says. Hart’s little sister also has a dog-walking business of her own, which was sparked by a simple conversation in the car.

Starting off, Hart had high ambitions, a little too high for a startup business; however, he was encouraged by his mom to stick to his main scents and branch out as expenses allow. Right now, ManCans offers eight unique scents such as: NY Style Pizza, Grandpa’s Pipe, Sawdust, Campfire, New Mit, Fresh Cut Grass, Coffee, and even Bacon. Along the way ManCans featured the scent “Money to Burn” but because of low sales has since been discontinued.

Hart makes all his candles in soup-cans, and although it is a for-profit business, he donates soup to local soup kitchens with a portion of the proceeds. This is a prime example of how you can make a positive influence in the world, without necessarily donating all of your earnings to charity.

ManCans has been a business of trial and error. Hart took something laughable and made it sellable. ManCans serves as a perfect example that products don’t have to serve just one audience, and there is always a way to make things marketable to different groups. Young entrepreneurs should be encouraged by Hart’s story to not reject a product, until they attempt see it from a different angle; in Hart’s case, this meant making masculine scented candles.

Not your Old Girly Candle-ManCan

A 13 year old boy named, Hart Main began his own candle business. His product is both inventive and creative. Having a sister, he naturally had to find something to pick on her for. So, he decided to make fun of all the scented candles she had to sell that smelled so girly. Most girls love a good smelling candle, so he was not wrong. This sparked an ides in his mind. Why could there not be manly candles? He solved this question by creating ManCan. Manly scented candles made in old soup cans. These candles not only smell good but they look good too. City Bonfires-A Mini Mobile Bonfire

City Bonfires was created and is still produced in Maryland.  It was created by Chris McCasland and Michael Opalski when both of their jobs were impacted because of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Because of this, they were both at home a lot more than they were used to and started looking for something to do with all of this time they had recently acquired.  I think that it is really great that they make everything right in Maryland and with American made materials.

City Bonfires sells several different product packages on their website.  They sell just the “portable firepit”, three different smore packs (which include smore ingredients since these are safe to cook over, and scented ones which interestingly you can also still cook over.  I think this is a very interesting concept and something that has been missing on the market.  Yes there have been other little fire makers out there, but none that are made out of food grade wax and plant based materials that makes them perfectly safe to cook things like smores over.

I really like the idea and execution of City Bonfires.  I believe that with innovation cool niche products like this can really make a go of it.  There is nothing quite as perfect and well thought out as this product on the market.  I think it is very fun that this whole company came from the pandemic.

Bianchi Candle Co.

There are many things that people enjoy and one common thing is candles. Candles can come in all different scents, wicks, and ingredients. These things make each candle unique, and an all natural soy candle handed poured in Papillion, NE, Italy is definitely unique.

Nic Bianchi received a candle making kit on his twelfth birthday and was hooked from that point on. He Nic Bianchi, Bianchi Candle Company, with a few of his products.kept on creating all natural soy candles and soon afterwards, he introduced his candle business, Bianchi Candle Company. The company did not come as a surprise to his parents because if you rewind to Nic’s younger years, you would be impressed with the young boy. During elementary school, Nic would sell toys to his classmates at recess. Later, he upgraded his little toy business with a catalog and everything was sold with a logo of his creation.  He even went the next step and employed two other children as sales reps to help him with his toy business at school. His eagerness to be an entrepreneur expanded as he entered his candle company. The candle making process is more complex than most people think. Besides having a passion for entrepreneurship, Nic enjoys the math and science subjects which is a bonus in his candle making. Much thought goes into the ratios of ingredients and the sizing of the wick to ensure a longer burn and elements of the jar and label will matter in the process since the heat of the flame could destroy them.

Bianchi Candle Company has launched many candles for different occasions or purposes. TheBianchi Candle Company motivational candle, Yes You Can candle, and the Bianchi Candle Co, purely luxurious candles, are two of the most popular brands of candles that the company sells. All the candles are natural and without any dyes causing them to be purely white, which when his last name is translated from Italian, it means white. Nic’s story is inspiring for me because he followed his passion which brought him into the world of business.

ManCan Candles

In 2010, at the age of 13, Hart Main created ManCan Candles, a company that sells candles in “Manly Scents”. The candles are packaged in soup cans initially in the Main’s kitchen, but now by the local Beaver Creek Candle Co. This entrepreneurial endeavor is more than just a commercial enterprise, it is also a social enterprise, they donate to soup kitchens in the form of 100,000 cans of doup so far, and $35,000.

His business was started when he found his sister selling normal candles for a fundraiser, he noted that the candles were too “girly.” A month later when he found himself wanting to buy a $1500 bike, he revisited the idea that candles were too “girly” and decided that he could make good money by selling candles.

Hart has since coauthored a book with his father about the experience and seeks to help local soup kitchens as well as other people striving to be young entrepreneurs.

Super Business Girl!-Asia Newson

Asia Newson is a young, teenage, entrepreneur from Detroit, who started her own business at the age of five! She wanted to experiment with candle-making while also teaching other kids like her how to become entrepreneurs. Her father first taught her how to make candles at a young age because he sold them himself at one point. Asia decided to create her own business, Super Business Girl, so she could have the freedom to design her own schedule. Ultimately, she looked at how hard her mom worked at her job and at home, so Asia decided that she wanted to create her own business to have more freedom to serve others. She started selling her candles outside of a store in downtown Detroit, which led to some conflict as she got older. Many people were projecting her business and brand as a scam and the security guards began chasing her from their storefront. Asia and her mother found a solution and went to get a permit. When the guards were shown the permit, they weren’t pleased but allowed it. Then she met someone who helped her out tremendously…

“Everything really started to change when Asia ran into Dan Gilbert, who is the owner of Quicken Loans as well as the Cleveland Cavaliers. He recognized her as Detroit’s “Super Business Girl.” She met with him in his office and he said, “I have keys to the city, and I can sell anywhere!” Today, Asia has trained 40 of her peers, young kids in Detroit, Michigan to be Entrepreneurs, which is to say Newson has created power and possibility across a whole community! She believes in helping other kids in Detroit and beyond learn to be entrepreneurs. Asia is a 13-year-old business owner who is making an impact on the world. She was featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show and on America’s got talent for her business and for her strong entrepreneurial spirit. She made a large impact in her community by training up to 40 of her peers on how to become entrepreneurs in the Detroit area.

This story is a massive inspiration due to Asia’s ability to power through and not let anyone talk her down regardless of who they were and what they thought of her business. She wanted to create a major impact in her community and ultimately the world, and she is doing just so. Her idea is a new take on the young entrepreneur by being able to teach others her process of innovation and success in her business. She demonstrates the idea of pivoting and hard work to be able to push through the hardships of being overlooked as a young entrepreneur who grew out of the “Oh, this is so cute!” phase. She is taken seriously as a young entrepreneur who has made a major impact with not necessarily a new product, but a relatable process in making it. She again has inspired me, and hopefully, others, to start as early as you can so you can accomplish much throughout life. Taking the first steps to create a business will get the ball rolling, that’s what I need to strive for.

Young Entrepreneurs: Hart Main

Hart Main is a great example of how inspiration for a product idea can come from a variety of sources – sometimes even jesting. Hart’s sister was selling what he called “girly” scented candles for a school fundraiser, and he gleefully took advantage of the opportunity, teasing her. However, when 13-year-old Hart’s heart got set on a $1,500 bicycle, he decided to turn this jest into a business opportunity.

ManCan Candles was born. The idea was candles that carry fragrances like “Grandpa’s Pipe” and “Sawdust.” With a little bit of investment from his parents, Hart was off and running. He decided to use soup cans for a holder and began working with his parents to develop scents for his candles. They are now available in every state.

This idea goes to show that inspiration for a business can be found almost anywhere – including in a joke. In fact, I’d wager that a lot of jesting about products like this could become viable businesses. After all, why did Hart make fun of his sister? Because all of the candles she was selling were “girly” scented. Hart unknowingly identified a problem with what was available candle-wise. Thankfully he didn’t just write it down as a bad joke but followed through with a solution to the issue that he identified – and he was successful with it: ManCan Candles makes over six-figures annually!

Hart Main and the ManCan

Hart Main went from a 13 year old with some soup cans to an entrepreneur making six figures annually. It all started when Hart wanted a $1,200 bike, and in lieu of mowing lawns and shoveling driveways like every other kid, he decided to pursue a business instead. His idea arose when a confrontation with his sister lead to his discovery of a hole in the scented candle market. He discovered this hole could be filled with a more masculine take on scented candles, and thus he created the company ManCan. After some R&D, Hart nearly perfected his product and began selling in his community. Soon, his story got so big that he got picked up by the Associated Press and thus sales boomed.

Hart Main’s product always had a philanthropic angle. When just starting out, the soup cans needed to make the candles were consumed by his family and friends, however production increased and thus the soup followed suit. He eventually had enough soup to donate 200 units to a soup kitchen with the stipulation that the empty cans were to be returned. Later, instead of soup, ManCan began donating 75 cents from the proceeds of every candle sale to soup kitchens in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Michigan, thus continuing Hart’s philanthropic venture. As of July 21st, 2015, ManCan has donated $35,000 to soup kitchens in the United States, and thus that number is likely significantly larger now that it’s 2021 and ManCan is still in business.

After years of hard work and creativity, Hart Main has contributed to the economy as well as communities beyond his own. In four years, he went from packaging cans in his kitchen to a rented warehouse space with five employees. In his time as a teenager, Hart managed to create a product that is currently in stores in all 50 states as well as online as a part of Beaver Creek Candle Company.

Yes You Can(dle)!

Eighteen-year-old Nic Bianchi founded Bianchi Candle Co when he was only twelve years old. His family hails from the village of Grondola in Tuscany, Italy. Nic’s heritage has inspired his six-year-old candle company greatly. Growing up with a love for math and science, Nic has used his passions to formulate, design, and innovate the well-known household item — candles! At a young age, Nic was able to put an immeasurable amount of care into putting together an aesthetically pleasing candle that serves customers scents of the utmost quality. Though Bianchi candles are delightful to smell and wonderful to look at, Nic’s product does not rest in its material laurels, but rather in the meaning behind the packaging. Bianchi Candle Co’s other candles have themes of supporting freedom, the military, law enforcement, firefighters, and healthcare workers. The Bianchi Candle candles and diffusers have simple designs in black and white, intense scents, and are much more expensive. With this wide array of candles and target markets, Bianchi Candle Co always sticks to its roots, keeping the cohesion of this brand quite alive. It was not just a small village in Italy that inspired young Nic, but rather the handcrafted artisanship that Grondola is known for. Due to this generational family devotion to quality and performance, all candles are carefully poured in small batches out of their local factory in Papillion, Nebraska to this day. These all-natural soy wax candles are beautiful to look at, a great pleasure to smell, and burn cleaner for longer.

Asia Newson – Super Business Girl

When Asia Newson was just 5 years old, she watched her dad go door to door selling candles in the Detroit area. She decided she wanted to learn to make and sell candles for herself. From a very young age, Asia had an impressive understanding of different business concepts including developing her own sales pitch.

“Hi, I’m Asia Newson, and I’m known as Detroit’s youngest entrepreneur.” This simple pitch caught the attention of many.

Now, eight years later, Asia makes and sells her own candles, and she has expanded her business into one that trains other young entrepreneurs about the basics to owning and running a business. It is called Super Business Girl. On her online store, Asia also sells t-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and bags. The proceeds from both the online store and her training program go to help buy clothes and food for children in need.

Although Asia is a teenager now, she has easily adapted her sales pitch to focus on her training program. Super Business Girl targets middle school and high school students while encouraging entrepreneurial thinking to those who may not have thought about running their own business before.

Asia runs her workshop business under Bamboo Detroit, which is a business incubator for start-ups. One of the owners, Dave Anderson, met Asia while she was selling candles and took her under his wing. He gave her tips to improve her packaging and helped her with business techniques. Asia learned a lot about saving and investing money for her business.

In 2015, Asia made an appearance on Ellen where she talked all about her ambitions and goals as a young entrepreneur and woman in America. This ambition has given her lots of recognition and ultimately has played a huge role in her entrepreneurial success.
