Beans on Broad – A Spot for Community

Beans on Broad is a local coffee shop in Grove City that many college students enjoy. It’s not a chain, which makes it unique in status as an entrepreneurial venture.

It was originally started several years ago by two sisters, Shelley and Wendy, who grew up in Grove City. They “have a thing for local” and source their pastries, coffee, and milk from local farms and businesses. Even the building is steeped in history, first beginning as a First National Bank, then Grove City Hardware, Broad Street Books, and then finally a beloved coffee shop. It hasn’t changed much since the early days, still retaining its original wood flooring, brick walls, tin ceilings, and decorated ceiling fans. Keeping that sense of originality and “old time” feeling make Beans on Broad a cozy spot to listen to the town and explore what’s going on.

One of this coffee shop’s values is “community first.” This is shown through their local sourcing and their location in the heart of Olde Town Grove City. Beans on Broad also provides an important meeting spot to cultivate fellowship, conversations, the arts, relationships, and even hosting events! In such a small town as Grove City, a sense of community and togetherness is what’s important. Any coffee shop can be a place to sit and drink, but Beans on Broad offers a unique sense of coming together and truly sharing each other’s lives. The owners, Shelley and Wendy are dedicated to inviting people in and showing them what true community means.

Almost anyone can start a business nowadays, but it is critical to find a way to engage your customers in what you are doing. That is the beauty of entrepreneurship, it is possible to go into a place, start a business that you are passionate about, and create a way of living for both yourself and your customers! And that is exactly what Beans on Broad have accomplished. It’s not just a coffee shop, it is a place where encouragement grows, and relationships are built. Community is crucial to Grove City, and we must do all we can to foster a sense of community and spirit in our small town!

Jordan Karcher – Grounds & Hounds

In 2012, Jordan Karcher adopted his first dog from a rescue shelter and realized he had a passion for saving dogs in shelters. This is what prompted Jordan to find a way to combine his passion for coffee with his new passion for rescue animals.  This solution to this issue was the creation of his brand, Grounds & Hounds.

Karcher is unique in his entrepreneurial journey because he combines two passions in his life to make a difference.  Grounds & Hounds donates 20% of their proceeds to animal rescue organizations. Their slogan is “every pound saves a hound.”  This combination allows Grounds & Hounds to stand out from competitors who only focus on coffee, rather than helping a cause along the way.  Helping animals drives Karcher to build his brand in the best way possible, because the funds he raise all contribute to his passion for animals.

Grounds & Hounds is also unique in the way they produce their coffee.  Rather than producing coffee in mass amounts, each batch is homemade in small amounts by their “roast masters.”  This production process certainly makes the coffee product seem much more personal to the consumer.  It enforces the idea that Grounds & Hounds is high quality coffee made with a purpose.

Innovation

Grounds & Hounds is constantly innovating in order to stand out on the market.  Instead of purchasing the cheapest coffee beans, they source their beans from the top regions around the world to ensure the best quality taste. In addition, the 20% proceeds are donated to innovative animal rescue centers to promote better living conditions for animals.  Grounds & Hounds also offers a monthly subscription called “Coffee Club” where consumers can receive various coffee flavors each month.  This is different than other brands that only sell coffee individually.

My Takeaway

Jordan Karcher’s story has certainly inspired me.  He found a way to combine his passions for coffee and animals and create a successful company to benefit both passions. It was very encouraging to see that someone so young found a way to act on his passion and create a successful company.  I always saw the coffee industry as one that was controlled by large companies, but Karcher showed that it is possible for anyone to be successful in a market if their brand can stand out.

Anna Sitar: A Brand of Positive Encouragement

Anna Sitar is a social media influencer who’s main focus is to spread positivity and joy. She is active on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and has a website to sell some merchandise like t-shirts and sweatshirts with quotes specific to her personal brand on them. Not quite an influencer, Anna still manages to pull many viewers through her wholesome content. She recommends different brands all the time, and is real about her experiences with her followers.

Her big debut came with her Poland travel blog that she posted on YouTube. Then, once TikTok became popular in the States, Anna started a TikTok account. Her content shows that she is a good-natured, encouraging, kind, and humorous person. Two catch phrases Anna is known for are: “I don’t want it” and “get with it.” Either one is a common phrase in her TikToks.

Although Anna does not have a lot of products to sell and grow as a business, she is cultivating a brand that reaches much further than products. Her clean content and positive outlook help her followers believe in the good that is in the world. Anna Sitar is an encouragement all around, and her entrepreneurial mindset is taking her places.

Her website states her philosophy quite simply: “There is no such thing as an unrealistic standard. This brand represents the fighters, the lovers, and the humans who know what they want, and will not rest until it is achieved. If you don’t believe in us, we don’t want it.” It’s an honest and beautiful brand that can cheer anyone up.

BOLD3 Coffee

I am an ethical coffee enthusiast and have discovered many coffee companies that have a positive impact on coffee farmers and others working within the coffee industry.  However, I recently discovered a non-profit coffee ministry that goes a step beyond ethics by selling coffee that is mission-focused. Bold 3 Coffee is a non-profit ministry that sells organic, fair trade coffee and uses the profits to spread God’s Word to children all over the world.

Millennial founders, Jessica, Nick, and Jeff, found themselves lost and searching for hope and purpose during their college years. In the midst of this dark time in their lives, they were invited to attend a church service. God met each one of them during the service and they committed their lives to following Him. Over the next few years, they were overwhelmed with a new passion for God and a desire to share His love with the world. At the same time, they were dissatisfied with their old lifestyles and decided to take a fresh start by leaving their jobs and making other changes in their lives. They wanted to commit to growing in their new relationship with Jesus, so decided to spend time with Him daily by reading the Bible with their morning cup of coffee. While praying together over God’s will and purpose for their lives moving forward, they experienced a “break-through” moment regarding the start of BOLD 3 Coffee. They decided to start a ministry that combined the two passions they all shared: Jesus and coffee.

It doesn’t seem as though these three millennials would consider themselves entrepreneurs, however, it is obvious to me that they display many entrepreneurial traits. They were very creative and innovative in combining coffee with spreading God’s word. This is a great example of missional entrepreneurship as they use the ministry’s profits to partner with One Hope, a ministry that distributes reading materials that explain God’s love to children in 145 countries.

Leanne Holder

Leanne Holder is a 26-year-old entrepreneur who owns Because Racecar Box and Vitamin Coffee, and also acts, models, and dabbles in fitness. When her career as a fitness coach and personal trainer fell through in 2016/2017, Leanne decided to launch Because Racecar Box, a company that delivers “car enthusiasts with detailing products directly to their door.” Holder values fitness and health, which is why she is currently the co-owner of Vitamin Coffee, which sells vitamin-infused coffee that promotes a healthier immune system and just feeling better.

Because Racecar Box is the leader in its industry, and boats upwards of $390,000 in profits per year, and since her purchase of Vitamin Coffee, the company has increased sales by over 100%. Holder was named of 10 Entrepreneurs to watch in 2020 by justentrepreneurs.co.uk, and will surely see more achievements in years to come.

Leanne Holder’s Because Racecar Box is a brand new service, and her intrusion into the traditionally male-dominated industry of cars further shows that she is a true entrepreneur, meaning she is willing to take risks, and is also able to combine existing ideas to make new ones.
