LifeProof and Their Brand Loyalists

Official LifeProof Company Logo.jpg

Everybody knows a LifeProof case when you see one. They are nearly as iconic as the iPhone itself. But what is the story behind them and why is it when you go LifeProof you never go back?

First the story behind the company. It was started in 2009 by then Queensland University of Technology grad Gary Rayner. His idea for a completely shock, dirt, dust, ice, and waterproof case became a reality for him. The idea took 18 months and $1 million to develop, but at the LAUNCH Conference in 2011 Rayner made the first case’s debut with a dramatic presentation involving a lot of ketchup and mustard. Watch the YouTube video of Rayner’s debut, it’s pretty funny!

After Rayner’s debut his product quickly became popular among sport enthusiasts. Once his brand acquired its fist brand loyalists that pool rapidly grew and LifeProof began sponsoring sports programs as a result. in 2012, the company sponsored Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. In late 2012, LifeProof announced participating sponsorship in all 2013 XTERRA Triathlon events and many more FRĒ FOR iPHONE 8 PLUS AND iPHONE 7 PLUS in DROP INevents. LifeProof’s popularity frightened its competitor OtterBox in 2011, shortly after their debut, a patent suit was filed by OtterBox against LifeProof; however, by 2013 LifeProof agreed to be acquired by OtterBox at an undisclosed price.

With their popularity, what draws the customer base to become hardcore brand loyalists? As a LifeProof brand loyalist I can say that their business model and product design draws me to buy one every time I get a new iPhone. The product is slim not bulky (like OtterBoxes). Being on the boat or near the pool during the summer, it’s also nice to know it will float and is completely waterproof if it ever fell in or got wet. But a little on their business model. The company offers a great one-year warranty on your phone and/or case if anything were to get damaged. In my 3 years of brand loyalty to LifeProof and 4 cases later I have only had to use the warranty once. With all that, you certainly do get a lot for the $80+ that you might spend on the case.

Briago Labs

Coming SoonThe Problem

A while back on the internet I saw a picture of a young woman in tears at a restaurant table. She wasn’t on a date, she was surrounded by family. After reading the post it was clear the tears were indeed happy, not sad. For the first time in her seventeen years of living this girl was given a menu she could read; in braille.

Braigo Labs

Braigo Labs is a company which provides low cost blue tooth and internet equipped braille printers to help the visually impaired. Their goal is to help 50 million of the worlds population accomplish a task most of us take for granted. Being able to read independently is a struggle for the visually impaired. Typical braille printers cost around three thousand dollars. Braigo Labs product is sold for 82% less than competitors.

Founder

Braigo Labs is one of the most impressive entrepreneurial endeavors in existence. Its impressiveness is compounded by the age of the founder and its creation story. Shubham Banerjee is 14 years old. Braigo Labs primitive version was built with Lego Mindstorms EV3. The inspiration struck while brainstorming ideas for a seventh grade science fair project. Banjeree is not alone in his journey, as many teachers and mentors are encouraging and helping make the second version of the printer possible. Banjeree says the best advice they’ve supplied is; “Be humble,” and “Innovate for the right reasons — money is not one of them.”

Jake Nickell – Threadless

In 2000, Jake Nickell started a thread on the forum website Dreamless, where artists could submit t-shirt designs to share with the rest of the thread. The best few designs were then chosen, and Jake printed them out and sold them. The artists who won received a few free shirts for their contribution. All of the money Jake made from shirt sales was put directly back into printing new shirts. His reason for this project was not making money, it was his passion for design and the art community. He did not even really think about it becoming a real business at first. After this first round, Jake built a website to sell the shirts on, and eventually moved everything to the site when he saw a possibility for a business. He called it Threadless, a spin-off of the name Dreamless. The basic structure was, and still is, that artists submit designs, and each week they are voted upon by the site users. Then the best are printed out and sold. Artists receive money and a Threadless gift card for winning.

Soon after, Jake dropped out of art school to focus on Threadless. During the first few years, Jake was constantly designing new websites and rolling them out to get feedback on them. They would sometimes totally change the Threadless website four times a year. Jake is an artist and a coder, so he had fun working on this, and still does to this day. In 2004, Threadless made $1.5 million in profit, and in 2006 they hit $6.5 million. Then in 2008, Inc. estimated $30 million in sales at a 30% profit ($9 million in profit), and also named Threadless as The Most Innovative Company in America and placed them on the front cover of their magazine.

Threadless utilizes two big tools with their business model – crowdsourcing and co-creation. This means that the customers create and promote the products being sold, which is part of the reason they are so successful. It gets artists involved in what they love to do. They also have a chance to make money from it, so they will go promote it to their friends, which keeps growing the business. Threadless was actually around before the term crowdsourcing came into being, but it was quickly connected with the company.

Threadless also does very well at connecting with their customers and artists. Employees sometimes text the artists, and constantly communicate with them and ask about their experience.

Threadless is truly an innovative company that has become very successful. What has made them successful is their (at the time) unique business model, and their passion, especially Jake’s passion, for the artist community.

Always More

As a Christian, we are running this race we call life with the end goal of crossing the finish line and into the arms of our Father as he whispers, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” The race is tiring and we sometimes get distracted from where the finish line is. We hesitate, we fall, we get up again and we keep going, because we ALWAYS have MORE strength, endurance, and power in Christ.

Audrey Roloff, the founder of her blog AujPoj started writing the phrase “always more” on her arms and shoes in high school. A dedicated long distance runner, she kept every pair of running shoes she has ever owned and would spray paint them red, fill them with prayers and notes, and finally mark the bottom with the phrase “Always More” to signify the end of an era and the start of a new one. Her inspiration behind the phrase comes from Ephesians 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine…” As she got older, she started applying the phrase to more in her life beyond just running. “When I get cut off on the road or treated rudely, these words remind me that there is ALWAYS MORE to someones’ story than what I know. When I am filled with joy, these words remind me that Christ will ALWAYS overfill me with MORE joy as I look to Him.”

What started out as a personal mantra for a girl growing up in the Pacific North West has now turned into a national movement.

Roloff started her blog AujPoj as a way to relate running and faith, but expanded it to include DIYs, tutorials, devotionals, personal stories, and more to create a true hodgepodge of creativity and inspiration. She has since expanded her blog into a shop inspired by the phrase, “Always More” where she sells clothes, hats, stickers, and more.

She frequently references her “always more” mantra with applications to her own life experiences to over 905,000 followers on her personal Instagram page. And with almost 75,000 followers on her shop Instagram page, Roloff’s personal motivation has expanded into a full blown business and ministry. Her mission to encourage other women to “ALWAYS believe in the MORE that is within them through Christ,” has reached young women all over the world. She’s also included an Always More Devotional which involves weekly text messages filled with encouragement, prayers, scriptures, and more to inspire and motivate you to always believe there is more to be found in Christ.

Audrey Roloff has created more than just a business. She’s created a movement. There is always more hope, love, and joy when we seek Christ, and she invites anyone and everyone to come alongside her to live out this truth.

Good Mythical Morning!

Rhett and Link are a huge YouTube sensation today with thousands of dedicated followers and their own merchandise. This comedic duo has been together since first grade and still remain the best of friends now. What started out as their own website in 2005, Rhett and Link made hilarious videos, usually satirical songs that had perfect harmony and humor. However, when YouTube started, their videos became more viewed. In 2007, the duo gained over 800,000 views in just a few months (a feat that is extremely impressive, considering that this was the really early days of YouTube). This video, The Facebook Song, proved to be their most popular video (now at 17 million views today). In addition to them being one of the first viral videos, they also are one of the few channels that has been around for the entirety of YouTube’s life. Another part of their lucrative business is their daily show, Good Mythical Morning, which is a 20 minute long morning talk show filled with crazy food taste tests and lots of competitions.

What makes Rhett and Link such amazing millennial entrepreneurs is their dedication to their customers, and their desire to keep being creative with their skits. Additionally, they have found a way to create something they love and that pays the bills for them and their families. With that in mind, they also have gained a large fan base, giving them the ability to sell merchandise and write books (both of which fly off the internet shelves). All through the process, they remain humble about their success. With their success, they promise to increase their humor and quality, both of which have definitely improved. Rhett and Link truly are national treasures and deserve recognition for all of their hard work. With classic (and mostly clean) humor, they are a joy to watch and laugh at.

Benjamin Stern and Nohbo

Benjamin Stern was only 17 years old when he secured an investment from Mark Cuban on Shark Tank for his company Nohbo. Benjamin started his entrepreneurship journey all the way back in middle school, where he started his first venture. Stern would buy his own coffee beans at a wholesale price, from a roaster in Seattle, and would go around his neighborhood selling his own coffee. Part of the sales would go to the Wounded Warriors Project. After this he wanted to create an idea that would go beyond his own neighborhood.

Using his company Nohbo, Benjamin Stern is trying to eliminate the need for plastic bottles in personal car products. Such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and shaving cream. His product is a single use, water-soluble, apparatus that dissolves 100 percent. It is either a ball of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or shaving cream that you just rub on your hands under water and lather up. Moving forward Benjamin is trying to work with top hotel distributors to create a custom line for them. With an increasing consumer demand on the emphasis of cleaner, greener, and healthier products, I have no doubt that this product is bound to really change up the health and body care industry.

Facebook Founder

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook is one of the worlds youngest billionaires. It all started when he was 12 years old. He created a program for his fathers dental practice, he also created online games for himself and his friends. As Zuckerberg’s interest in computers continued to increase, his parents hired a private computer tutor. Zuckerberg often outperformed the computer tutor. Zuckerberg decided to take his programming to the next level and developed the early version of Pandora. As young Zuckerberg was developing this, he had many job offers from Microsoft and AOL, but denied all of them. Zuckerberg started working on the social media website, Facebook, in his college dorm room at Harvard. Two years onto college, Zuckerberg dropped out to focus on completing Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg is a very successful young entrepreneur and has very many entrepreneurial traits. One trait that is clearly visible in Zuckerberg’s upcoming is his ability and desire to take risks. One instance that shows this is that Zuckerberg dropped out of college to pursue what he was trying to accomplish. Risk Taking is easily one of the biggest traits that create a successful entrepreneur. Zuckerberg is also determined, he was very determined to persevere with his company and wouldn’t let anything stop him. This is also shown when Zuckerberg dropped out of college, not even himself furthering his education got in the way of his dream. Zuckerberg wanted to do things the way he wanted it and wasn’t afraid to tell other people no, he denied many contracts and didn’t want any help besides the men he was already working with. Zuckerberg is very inspiring and shows what is taken to follow dreams from a young age and still shows what it takes to run a successful company.

Bumpers

In an increasingly connected world one new trend that has emerged is the idea of podcasting. A podcast is basically the new radio talk show where people can record themselves talking and having discussions and then post these conversations on platforms like Apple Podcasts to show the world their thoughts. This trend has definitely been growing over the last couple of years, but there have still been hurdles that have prevented people from getting involved in this new podcasting community. These include issues like a lack of equipment or a lack of skills needed to edit and record proper, well-made audio.

This is the problem that Jacob Thornton and Ian Ownbey, two guys that use to work at twitter, are trying to solve with their app Bumpers. They saw that the podcasting world was becoming an increasingly larger industry and to help get more A podcast in progress in the Bumpers app.people get into this community they created an app that allows people to record their own podcasts with just their phone. This idea came to Ownbey when he and his friend trying to start their own podcast. They were very excited for it, but soon realized how difficult creating a podcast actually was. He said that they would spend so much time editing with the mechanics or learning ProTools that they ended up getting frustrated and giving up on the idea as a whole.  However, the silver lining to this was that Ownbey, unlike most people, saw opportunity in his frustration. He realized that if he had this much trouble creating a podcast, then others probably have had the same issue as well. Thus, Bumpers was created to help regular people, like Ownbey and his friend, generate their own podcasts on a simple platform.

I think that this story makes some very interesting point about entrepreneurship. Sometimes we try to do something, and it doesn’t work out for us, or it is too complicated for us to understand. However, a true entrepreneur sees opportunities in these frustrating situations and finds ways of improving old methods of doing things. Ownbey and Thornton have proved this point with their app raising $1 million dollars led by Spark Capital. Another important lesson this teaches is that sometimes being an entrepreneur does not require creating something completely new, sometimes people just need something to be simpler or made more efficient. In this scenario, creating a podcast was definitely not a new thing, in fact people have been doing it for a many of years. The genius of Bumper isn’t that it allowed people to create podcasts, what makes it a success is that it gave people an easier and more efficient way to make podcasts. By doing this, Ownbey and Thornton have opened up the market to a larger pool of people that would not have been able to create these podcasts before, and this has paid off well for them.

The Craft of Custom Crochets

Bella Tonski had a skill for making things with her hands, whether it was crocheting a hat or baking a cake. More than that, she had taught herself how recreate a crocheted item just using a picture as reference, working without any sort of a pattern. Those who are crafters themselves will realize just how impressive this skill is. Bella is a visionary. On her website’s about page, she says,

“I’m a wife, a crafter & creator, a baker, a lover of both eating & cooking, connoisseur of written word, adorer of cats & critters, a Connecticut-dweller, & most important of all, a follower of Christ. I believe that I was created by a creative God to create creative things & crochet is my go-to method to reflect that!”

Though Bella has always been creative, she was not always interested in creating her own business. The encouragement of her husband that caused her to even consider it. Now she has a website, a Facebook page, and an Etsy shop for patterns that she has created.

I find her work to be an inspiration as I am a crafter myself. I admire her abilities and her open commitment to Christ through her life and work.
