Hilton Carter: Plant Enthusiast

Image result for hilton carterIt all began with the purchase of a Fiddle Leaf Fig plant named Frank. Then, Hilton Carter slowly incorporated more and more plants into the design of his house until a total of 200 plants were living all around his house. Carter used his passion for plants and interior design in homes to establish himself as an entrepreneur. During quarantine, Carter gained a following through Instagram from his design and plant care tips. As he grew with popularity, he was able to do a collaboration with Target for plants and home décor and has also published three books, with the titles “Wild at Home: How to Style and Care for Beautiful Plants,” “Wild Interiors: Beautiful Plants in Beautiful Spaces,” and “Wild Creations.”

Carter demonstrates how to turn a passion into a successful business opportunity. The houseplant niche exploded during quarantine, and Carter joined in on the trend at the right time and became a well known “Plant Enthusiast.” With an experienced background in design and houseplants, Carter used his innovation skills to write books and help others excel in styling their own homes. I am inspired by how Carter took what he was passionate about and turned it into a way to reach others and make money.

All Things Lilly Ann

Who would have thought that taking fancy notes could lead to a successful business venture?

For Lilly Ann Cepull, this became a reality with the development of her business All Things Lilly Ann back in 2018.

Lilly realized at a young age that she was fascinated by fonts and lettering. By the time she reached high school, she realized that other people were noticing her knack for hand-lettering. Girls in her classes noticed her fancy notes and began asking her for a doodle or a hand-lettered quote to hang in their rooms. Eventually, Lilly discovered she could make a business out of this and soon enough, she was hand-lettering chalkboards for weddings, teaching classes on lettering, painting clothing, and much more.

In 2018, Lilly took a leap of faith and decided to pursue her dream of having her own business. She began printing her art on stickers and prints–focusing on a theme of positivity throughout all of her art. The shop began to grow, and Lilly expanded by selling sweatshirts, tee shirts, socks, journals, to-do lists, and more.

All Things Lilly Ann continues to grow. Her Instagram (@instagram.com/allthingslillyann) now has over 121,000 followers. She runs the business out of North Carolina with her high-school sweetheart, Devin, who runs the business full-time with Lilly. Lilly states on her website, “Our day to day work varies so much (which is part of why we love being entrepreneurs)…”

Are You Kidding

Two brothers, Brandon and Sebastian Martinez, created a company called Are You Kidding Socks. The brothers are from West Kendall, Florida, which is a small town located near Miami. At the time the article was written, Brandon was 13 years old and Sebastian was 11 years old. The idea originated when Sebastian was 5 years old. His mother noticed that he had an adoration for socks and asked him if he wanted to create his own. Sebastian instantly began creating layouts with crayons. Within a year, Sebastian’s layouts were developed onto real socks and the stock started to sell rapidly. Since 2014, the charitable division for Are You Kidding Socks, Are You Kidding Cares, has given away socks to children who are homeless, in foster homes, or impacted by natural disasters. They have also collaborated with many organizations including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Autism Speaks, Make-a-Wish, and the American Cancer Society. Brandon and Sebastian partnered with Enrique Santos, a Hispanic radio producer and the chairman of iHeartLatino, to start the Are You Kidding podcast, which was the first iHeartRadio podcast to be presented by kids. Its goal was to encourage children to help other children by identifying innovative ways to be charitable. The podcast lasted about one month, running from August 2019 to September 2019. There were some appearances from celebrities and on-air personalities such as John Leguizamo and Elvis Duran. As of the date the article was written, Brandon and Sebastian have sold over 100,000 pairs of socks through their company. They have raised approximately $200,000, which is all devoted to organizations that assist kids in need. The brothers are seeking to grow their company all across the country by teaming up with more organizations. Brandon has said that him and Sebastian want to start an apparel line that includes hats, shirts, and sweaters. These two brothers have proved that you are never too young to start your own company. They can be seen as an inspiration to many people, especially those who are young, who are thinking about starting a company.

Touch Up Cup – Carson Grill

Carson Grill and his father founded Touch Up Cup, a simple and innovative solution to traditional touch-up paint cans. The motivation for starting this company was brought about when Carson, along with his Dad was trying to fix the paint on a wall in their house using some leftover paint, only to discover that it had gone bad. This prompted them to conceive of a new plastic cup, with a metal mixing ball that helps to preserve the touchup paint for significantly longer than traditional cans. Carson’s product provided a new take on a familiar product and he is inspiring due to his ability to make an idea a reality and then convey that idea to investors like those on Shark Tank in a concise and coherent manner.

Carson has a remarkable ability to captivate his audience and demonstrates a level of passion and knowledge for his product and his company that few others, especially at his age possess. It is admirable that Carson recognized a need for a different product and from there was able to iterate and craft a unique solution to a decades old problem. This level of creativity and ingenuity is unprecedented and thanks to Carson’s shrewd business skills, he and his company have been able to thrive.

Zach King – The Digital Illusionist

Zach King is a well-known media content-creator who began with Vine and then expanded to Youtube and Tiktok as his content began to take off. He is now one of the most followed influencers on the platform of Tiktok. Zach was a filmmaker whose interest in film was sparked when he was 7 years old. His love for creating videos followed him his entire life and didn’t stop when he was denied acceptance to film school at Biola University. Most people would have given up at that point and have believed that was a sign to pursue something else in life. While he did enroll at Biola as a general student, he turned instead to social media to show his videos. Originally, he had sold film editing tips under a different name than he has now, but he began to grow exponentially from there. He won $35,000 from Youtube’s Nextup Creators contest way back in 2011. Advertisements were a big part of how he made his money. King is most well known for his comedic, magical videos that he says function as a “digital sleight of hand.” It takes 25 people to accomplish his videos today, although he had to do a lot of his content by himself during the pandemic. He said that he found his success because: “We’re on the top charts right now on TikTok and our stuff is really different. Hopefully that shows others that you can be really successful, and at the top, by doing something totally left field. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. In fact, that’s where people are going to find their strength: By figuring out their niche and really owning it.”

I can’t help but agree with that. Following along with the trends and staying within one’s comfort zone might eventually grow a following, but they will only become a micro-influencer, just like so many others who also replicate trends. Doing something different and innovative, utilizing the unique talents that one might possess might be the ticket to success. Instead of being just one of the dime-a-dozen, standing out like Zach King did could lead to unimaginable success.

Bella Weems: Origami Owl

Bella Weems is a 28-year-old who is the founder of the jewelry company Origami Owl. At just 14 years old, she turned her passion into a business after her parents told her she would have to earn her first car. Her passion for handcrafting jewelry turned into a multi-million-dollar business.See the source image

Origami Owls main product is called the “Living Locket” which is a locket which you can add in your own, personalized charms to. This is unique because each charm can represent the persons hobbies and interests and showcase them when they wear the necklace. Bella also sells bracelets, earrings, and other accessories.

Bella is a busy kid entrepreneur, but she still allots time to give back. She started the “Owlettes Initiative” in which she personally mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs ages 12-17. Bella shares tips with these kids and any advice from her success story. I think this part of her business is truly inspiring because she found a way to help others as well as keep up a successful business.

Bella says the best part of being a kid entrepreneur is, “…being able to encourage kids of all ages to not be afraid to reach for their dreams and never let anyone tell them they’re not good enough or their idea isn’t good enough.” Bella’s business Origami Owl not only lets people express themselves through their jewelry but inspires young entrepreneurs to take the risk to start making something they are passionate about become big.

Hoop Swagg

Socks. When I think of socks, many images come to mind: high socks, low socks, quality socks, cheap socks, thick socks, thin socks, plain socks, and fun socks. Having a pair of fun socks can sometimes just brighten up the day. Many people have their fun socks, but do you have any socks as unique as Hoop Swagg? Young entrepreneur, Brennan Agranoff, created a business that makes socks with incredibly unique designs.

During his junior year in high school, Brennan started searching for socks but not the plain athletic socks. He wanted something with a unique design but still an athletic sock. When he could not find what he was looking for in the market, he decided to create the socks himself. After long hardGoat Farm research, Brennan taught himself the process of code and graphic design and slowly started forming his business. With the help of his dad as his investor, the young entrepreneur opened shop in his garage where he could print the designs on the socks. His ideas for his designs can come from anywhere— some are random while others are pictures from around him, like the goats which are one of the most popular designs that he sells. His business, Hoop Swagg, originally started just as a sock business but then it expanded into the arm sleeves, face coverings, shoe lacings, and apparel. And surprising fact is that he is colorblind and can still create designs that are completely amazing. After five years in the sock business, Hoop Swagg generates over one million dollars annually.

Brennan enjoys his business even though he has a busy life with school, chores, and soccer. He also donates to See the source imagecharitable causes and has a page on his website where you can participate in fundraising. Brennan was able to find solution to dull athletic socks and created a business where he can have fun and make money.

Floral Farm

Have you ever wanted to create your own flower bouquets?

Camden Kidwell is the leading example of a young entrepreneur. He is a recent homeschool high school graduate and instead of going to college this fall he took the entire spring and summer to create his own flower farm and bouquet business. He started Swallowdale Flowers in June of 2021, and named the business after swallows which nest in his family’s barn. Swallowdale Flowers is unlike any florist business due to the fact that the customers can walk around Camden’s garden and create their own bouquets using his flowers. He has provided his customers with the ability for them to customize their own bouquets, which is unlike any other flower farm or floral business since the vast majority offers only premade bouquet arrangements. He does make bouquets though, on a weekly basis which he sells at 6ixNorth, a local artisanal craft store in his hometown. Another unique feature is that he runs his business from home – outside – where customers can be in nature and experience what it is like to be on a farm.

Additionally, Camden has recently been asked by a local event planning company to collaborate with them on a wedding. An acquaintance asked Camden to make a corsage for his homecoming date at the local high school. Camden continues to grow his business and network through his community. He is an example of why one does not need to earn a degree to become an entrepreneur. Swallowdale Flowers is the definition of a startup business, because he never received any help beyond that from his father. Camden Kidwell’s story shows us that all it takes to become an entrepreneur is a willingness to be disciplined, take risks and have an imagination. He is an inspiration and a role-model.

Bringing the Beauty of Nature into Your Home-Dustin Anthony

Who doesn’t love having beautiful plants and flowers to liven up your home? What if it didn’t just flow with your décor, it became it? Dustin Anthony with his company BloomingTables aims “To bring the beauty of the outdoors – indoors.” These furniture pieces are beautifully crafted to show off a planter full of life underneath  that can be used as a functional coffee table, desk, or a beautiful decoration. The design is very simple and easy to use so that even people who don’t have a lot of plant experience will love having this in their home.

What started as a gift to Dustin’s girlfriend soon became a Kickstarter campaign and is now a full business in San Diego. However, things were not very easy for Dustin in running his business. After he made $40,000 dollars on Kickstarter in 2019, the pandemic hit. This resulted in the supply chain that Dustin was a part of becoming crippled. Although this was a set-back for the company, they were pleasantly surprised when business began to boom as people were spending so much more time inside and wanted to bring more life and beauty into their homes.

I think this is a really creative idea as it is a décor piece that people can interact with. Right on their website, BloomingTables describes themselves as being “…an innovative option to incorporate their favorite botanical scenes into their homes. This living furniture line combines beauty and functionality, in a sleek and modern way.”, and I couldn’t agree more. On the website they also go into detail about the several benefits that this table can offer. Beyond growing decorative plants, you can grow microgreens that are super nutritious and can be added to several different foods. They also discuss the additions and features that they are working on for future launches.

I really love this idea and this company for many reasons. This idea to me is truly innovative and can be used in so many different ways. Besides having it as a decoration in a home, this would be an amazing tool in classrooms and teaching kids (or adults) more about growing your own food! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the design of the table, the customization that you can have with it, and the fact that the company is still working on the product and innovating it further.
