Shawn Seipler, Founder of Clean the World

Shawn Seipler was once at a hotel in Minneapolis when the question struck him, “What do they do with the soap when I’m done with it?” When he asked the front desk, he was told they just throw the soap away. He saw how wasteful of a practice it was, and began to mentally brew potential solutions. Soon (once he was back at home in Florida), he created a makeshift work station in his garage, and had his family helping him to melt, sanitize, and reform bars of soap. Shawn was able to collect bars from several hotels around Orlando, and his first completed batch was 2,000 recycled bars strong. Shawn was able to bring himself and them to an impoverished area of Haiti. When he arrived at the church where he would hand them out, a crowd five times the size of his soap supply was waiting for him. Before this point, Shawn was aware of the great need that Haitian people had for hygiene supplies, but upon learning of how many of them died every day of disease, and seeing how grateful they were to receive soap, he knew his social enterprise had to continue. Shawn founded Clean the World in 2009, and since then the organization has expanded the scale of its operation, now donating to 115 countries (including homeless shelters in the US), it has diverted more than 28 million pounds of waste from landfills and donated over 87 million bars of soap. It has also expanded its range to include recycling the plastic of small liquid soap bottles.

The process of recycling the soap used by Clean the World is the same in its fundamentals as what Shawn Seipler used initially in his garage. Though at first his team was using potato peelers, meat grinders, and cookers, the work done by the industrial-quality equipment they now possess is doing the same things at a larger scale. The modern process is as follows: First, the bars are extruded into pellets and ground so that all foreign particles are removed. Then, the soap is sterilized by heating. Next, there is another round of pelleting and grinding to eliminate any potential remaining particles. Lastly, the soap is turned back into fresh bars. Clean the World now has recycling centers all over the earth, helping to prevent waste and provide for those in need.

Henry Burner – Buttonsmith, Inc.

14-year-old entrepreneur Henry Burner is the creator of Buttonsmith, Inc., a business that started from a fourth-grade class project on trading in 2013. Henry made pinback buttons to sell to his classmates and that summer moved to selling them at local farmers markets. In 2014, Burner moved online to sell his products via his website and Amazon. The product catalog grew to include buttons, magnets, lanyards, fixed-top badge reels, and his newest product: Tinker Reels, badge reels with swappable tops, which he currently has a patent pending on the design.

Henry suffered from dyslexia which caused him to have trouble in school, but he didn’t let that stop him from pursuing his button idea. It started in the spring of his fourth-grade year when he had a trading post for frontier life. His mom asked if he wanted to bake cupcakes or cookies to sell, but he thought that market was too overpopulated and wanted to sell something unique. That’s when he pulled out his mom’s old button maker and started making buttons. That was the first time that Henry really felt successful at school, and he wanted to continue selling.

The company now sells products on their website, Amazon, and they are in over 1,600 Walmart stores. Online sales are by-far the company’s largest platform for making money. They currently offer lanyards, dog collars, leashes, business cards, banners, etc. and are working to expand the existing offerings.

Henry overcame challenges to become one of the youngest ‘Forbes 30 Under 30’ title winners and has established a multi-million-dollar empire. His goal is to expand into Europe and make Buttonsmith a known name across the globe.

Stoned Fine Jewelry – Eve Gay

Eve Gay launched a jewelry business at the age of 24 while attending Pepperdine University. After a sustainable fashion internship did not work out due to the pandemic lockdowns, she shifted to becoming a certified gemologist and build what would become Stoned Fine Jewelry. Her crystal candy-like jewelry ranged from diamond-studded tennis bracelets and serpent necklaces to heart-shaped rings. They have been featured on the covers of magazines like Playboy South Africa and have even been worn by celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Ireland Baldwin.

She founded the company as a sustainable, contactless jewelry business, which was important to her because of the pandemic and being able to serve a rising demand for online shopping. Eve knew nothing about the industry, so she started by learning everything she could about the diamond industry. Through this, she found a mentor in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida who helped her through it. She first started meeting people one-on-one during COVID, then started a website and met peopled and sourced things as they were needed. Gay also provided jewelry to boutiques and trunk shows in the Jacksonville area. She also got inspiration from the online show Ring Concierge, a women-owned jewelry company that specializes in engagement rights, weddings bands, and more. Her business model is centered around relationship-building and creating connections with customers.

Eve went through many trials and tribulations like reassessing her career path. She says being a Gen Z female business owner is a challenge, but she wants to pave the way for other young designers. She says that being successful is about putting yourself out there and being able to have the guts of starting your own business. The jewelry industry has high barriers to enter, and it is tough to navigate but she handles it by being very dedicated and working extra hard.

Gay poses for a headshot to promote STONED in Jacksonville in November 2020. Gay, the founder and CEO of the fine jewelry concierge service, said she drew inspiration from the luxury jewelry company Ring Concierge.

Junk Food that’s not Junk Food

If you’re like me, you love snacks. Unfortunately, most snacks leave you feeling sluggish and lousy after you eat them, not to mention that they’re filled with artificial and inflammatory ingredients. Katlin Smith, founder of Simple Mills, faced this problem early in her career as a traveling management consultant. She relied on prepackaged snacks for her food. She realized she needed to make a switch to a whole-food diet, and this switch made her feel way better and drastically improved her health. This is when she decided to start a snack brand made with only simple and natural ingredients. That is how Simple Mills was born, a snack brand focused on delicious snacks and quality ingredients. Starting in 2013, Simple Mills has grown to an annual revenue of around 100 million with products sold in stores such as Target, Walmart, Aldi, Giant Eagle, and Whole Foods. They offer crackers, cookies, bars, and baking mixes. Their products taste delicious and are similar to well-known snacks like Cheez-Its and Oreos, but are made without artificial colors and preservatives. Simple Mills started from Kaltin’s personal diet change that led to an innovative entrepreneurial opportunity. Simple Mills is one of my favorite snack brands and I recommend trying their crackers in particular.

From Baseball to SamCart

Scott Moran - SamCart | LinkedIn

Scott Moran was just a student at Grove City College when he started experimenting with his future career options. Scott studied marketing and management while in college. Scott’s career all started when one brother said to the other brother, “Hey, I want to sell stuff on the internet.” And just like that, they began to bring to life their ideas. In 2009, Scott and his brother Brian started an online company called Train Baseball. Train Baseball taught the two of them many valuable skills. Each of them learned how to use Facebook ads, control an online company, and overall, learn how to sell. At its best, Train Baseball made around $10k a month. Despite this success, the two brothers still wanted to grow. They began to develop ideas and recruit others to their business. They recognized that they needed employees who were skilled with software developing, so they hired two to help them build SamCart. SamCart was launched in September of 2016. SamCart is an e-commerce company that helps you grow. SamCart is successful because they capitalize on webinar registration. They spend around 25,000 dollars a day on advertising their company. The email lists are constantly growing and providing customers with the opportunity to expand their knowledge with SamCart. The second way SamCart rose to success is their webinar training. SamCart offers educationally packed, and wisdom filled advice for the consumer. At the end of the training, SamCart will be mentioned. This gives the company more advertisement and awareness of their brand. Lastly, SamCart rose because of its digital products. They offer a bundle to enhance customer purchase decisions. SamCart powers entrepreneurs to start their own company, and to do it correctly. Now, SamCart is used by over 75,000 customers who altogether sell more than 2.8 billion dollars in products. From Train Baseball to SamCart the two brothers have certainly put in the work to succeed in their business.
