Taking Care of Bees-ness

“Playing by nature’s rules since the 1980s” reads a banner on the Burt’s Bees website. Established in 1984, Burt’s Bees was founded on the principle of simple living and sustainability. Burt Shavitz used to work as a photojournalist in Manhattan but moved to Maine to escape the concrete jungle. He sought a simple life in the forest. Shortly after moving, he discovered a wild bee colony, he learned how to make a living from the honey and became the local bee man. As he was driving one day, he picked up Roxanne Quimby, a hitchhiker, who also used to work in Manhattan. They talked about bees and the pair hit it off. Roxanne found a book of recipes and using what Burt taught her about the hives was able to make lip balm and candles. During the early stages, Burt labeled their beehives so if they got stolen by bee thieves they could find them again.

They loved emphasizing a low-impact lifestyle and preserving the nature around them. They began to sell more commercially and build the brand. Once successful Roxanne decided to sell her stake in Burt’s Bees. Her philanthropy encompassed both charities and the woodlands of Maine that she loved so much. She donated over 90 million to charities and purchased 87,000 acres of wildlands in Maine which she gave to the National Park Service.

Burt continued with his original plan. Living out of a renovated 300 square foot turkey coop which he transformed into a cabin. The brand grew and he lived off a settlement from the 1984 court case, where Roxanne sued Burt. He was quoted as saying he was more hurt by the loss of the partner than the brand. As of recently, Burt’s Bees sold to Clorox for $970 million. Although no longer involved with the company, Burt continued to do what he always intended: to live with the land. His trusty dog Rufus was enough company for him.

Although to some his story may not look like a happy ending, it is a beautiful example of pure intentions. Burt never wanted to be globally famous or make tons of money. He believed in living respectfully and by nature’s rules. His products are made with the best nature has to offer. His brand never caused him to be greedy or seek more profits. When faced with lawsuits he decided to settle and maintained his dignity. He did not slander his former partner. Burt shared his gift with the world and then went back to his beloved land. He continued to play outdoors and keep bees until he died peacefully at age 80. His values live on through the products and are trusted by countless families across the world and although departed, customers can still recognize his friendly face on the trusted yellow seal.

Have you seen these shoes?

Have you seen these shoes?

These are BANGS Shoes, created by Hanna Davis. After teaching in China, she noticed the green canvas work shoes worn by locals and was inspired to create change. She came up with the idea to use shoes to help workers provide for their families and build self-sufficiency in other countries. Backed by her family, she was able to invest in an initial shipment. She had a website, business cards, and a model. She paid the manufacturing fee and was delivered no product.  As she started over and began to save again, she worked as a bartender. One night she struck up a conversation with an elderly couple who took an interest in her. They began to ask her about herself, and Hanna began to grow uneasy at the targeted questions, not wanting to disclose the specifics. She took down their information and later that week, decided to look him up. The man turned out to be a retired VF executive. VF is a corporation that owns outdoor adventure and apparel companies such as Vans, Supreme, The North Face, Jansport Dickies, and more. Two months later, George and Gayle Darrah become signed investors and business partners.

Jack Bloomfield – a self made millionaire

Jack Bloomfield is a self-made millionaire who started a company called Disputify when he was 17 years old. Originally, he ran a smaller business that involved him buying and reselling gift cards. Today he is twenty years old and has raised about 2.25 millions dollars for his disruptive e-commerce fraud detection tool, not to mention the youngest member of the Australian Institution of Company Directors. Most of his team are actually about double his age. There are only about 3 others currently, but he plans on expanding as he continues on this path. He was an e-commerce merchant who “struggled with customer trust” and started Disputify as a way to protect against return abuse. Unfortunately, as seen with his prior business, people were trying to scam him with fake refunds and he realized that it was the same people every time. “We’d spent thousands of dollars on credit card fraud solutions, but these people were using their own details. There are refund forums with thousands of people who talk about merchants that are easiest to rip off.” According to the US National Retail Foundation, these fraudulent refunds cost the United States about $25.3 billion. With his tool, merchants no longer have to fear fraudulent refunds and customers no longer have to be punished for the selfish actions of those who would take advantage of trusting businesses. Behavior patterns are tracked during the transaction of the original person and also when any person requests a refund. Merchants are then notified of any suspicious patterns that might arise. If someone had established a “habit” of buying the wrong size, Disputify also alerts the merchant to talk with this person in order to make sure they do in fact buy the correct size. He wanted to make sure people felt confident and comfortable whenever they shop. Bloomfield even came up with a new product (instant refunds) to reward faithful and proven trustworthy shoppers.

This young entrepreneur inspires me because he began at such a young age and has grown to astounding heights within only a couple of years. He saw a problem, knew he had a solution, and didn’t stop to think about things that could be obstacles. He just kept pushing forward. He refused to let his age become a boundary that stopped him from pursuing this evidently lucrative venture. I hope that I also take risks and push ahead like he does in whatever journey I choose to take next. “What if” is a powerful question. It is better to just ask than think about what could have been.

Langston Whitlock: co-founder of Safetrip

19-year-old engineer Langston Whitlock is the co-founder of Safetrip, the world’s first healthcare transportation app geared towards helping the homeless & elderly. The app allows patients, caretakers, and health care providers to book non-emergency and emergency medical transportation. Users are offered premium vans, cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles and ambulances and have the option of paying with insurance. Safetrip, based in Georgia, is changing the game for healthcare.

The idea for the app came when co-founder Ja’Nese Jean met a homeless veteran without access to healthcare. Jean began brainstorming ideas and brought together a team which included Whitlock because of his skills, talent, and passion for technology. From there, the idea for Safetrip developed. Since it began, the company has rasied over $2 million, a large part of this is thanks to Whitlock’s technology. He began coding when he was only 12 years old when he built an anonymous messaging app to contact his absent father. Since then, his passion has grown ever stronger for it. Whitlock says “Whatever you’re good at is likely what you’re called to do, and never give up. Even if your dad walks out of your life, pray to God and try to move forward with your life. God will provide resources.”

Additionally, Langston Whitlock was one of the youngest founders named to Forbes 30 under 30 in 2019. He can be seen as an inspiration to all, especially teenagers, of achieving your dreams doing something you love.

Zev Shapiro – The Social Activist Entrepreneur

Zev Shapiro is no ordinary college student. His childhood was unlike his peers. Born and raised in Cambridge Massachusetts, he is currently a sophomore at Harvard University. At the age of 10, he helped manage Senator Elizabeth Warren’s campaign. In 2014, he was invited to the State of the Union Address as Elizabeth Warren’s guest. He enjoys reading academic law and public policy journals for fun and discussing politics. He always has had an entrepreneurial spirit, especially with his visionary personality; he often looks ahead as to what can be solved and improved in our society. Before graduating high school at Cambridge Rindge and Latin in 2020, he launched TurnUp (in 2019), a non profit application dedicated for young activists to increase voter turnout. TurnUp targets Generation Z progressives by having the capability to connect with other progressive individuals for specific causes. Zev wants to provide his peers with a network to organize events, marches, and protests for teenage activists. He specifically focuses on increasing voter turnout in all U.S elections but there are some other causes such as social justice, racial inequality and educational rights issues. The use of TurnUp proved to increase 36 million young voters nationally in 2020. Additionally, TurnUp made it possible for 17,000 people to make connections with one another and attend progressive events and it has over $2,000 individual donors. This new progressive activism app has grown in such a short amount of time. Through TurnUp, Zev Shapiro brings together a new generation of young activists for leftist causes.

Despite Zev Shapiro’s political beliefs, as Christian entrepreneurs we should be inspired by his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication so that we can create some kind of innovation which spreads Biblical Truth, the Word of God, and conservative thought to Generation Z.  So what are we waiting for?

Reforming the System: Clementine Jacoby

“I left Stanford thinking that I would be a professional circus performer,” says Clementine Jacoby, who graduated from Stanford in 2015 with a degree in software engineering. Interestingly, Jacoby spent her first year after graduation teaching acrobatics in a Brazilian gang diversion program. During that time, Jacoby witnessed the flaws of the criminal justice system in Brazil, which disproportionately targeted citizens of lower socioeconomic status and often imprisoned those who committed petty crimes with excessive sentences. At the time, Jacoby did not realize that her experience would become the foundation needed for a company that advocates for criminal justice reform here in the United States.

More than 2 million people remain incarcerated in the United States, and among those in prison, experts say thousands of them don’t pose a public-safety threat. The problem? The data that allows them to be released is backlogged because it is spread out among different departments.

That’s why in 2019, Jacoby created Recidiviz, a nonprofit that works with more than 30 states to consolidate key data points of prisons around the country, such as whether an incarcerated person has shown progress by completing a treatment plan or how well equipped a correction facility can handle a COVID-19 outbreak.

Although no algorithm is perfect and there is not one solution that can solve the criminal-justice system problem alone, Recidiviz demonstrates early signs of success. To date, Recidiviz has released nearly 44,000 inmates in 34 states. Despite her young age of 29, Clementine Jacoby is changing the way our country views the criminal justice system. It’s giving those who deserve another chance, a second chance beyond the bars.

Blog Post #1

Alyssa Hunt

Alyssa Hunt is the creator of  blog named Life Hunt. This blog is aimed at motivating people to hustle towards their business and/or financial dreams while navigating everyday life. One strategy she uses is sticking to a schedule; consistency is something that Alyssa struggled with, she would deal with creativity blocks which would disrupt her consistency. Because Alyssa is also a full-time student, it is necessary for her to be extremely organized!

One thing Alyssa struggled with was going from “A to C without focusing on B”. This happened because she was too focused on other peoples expeditions instead her own; therefore, she learned to not focus on what other people are doing because it can be “distracting and disheartening”.

I like the way Alyssa works because she is super selfless while taking care of herself at the same time.

Brittany Canty: Co-founder of Comfort Eats

Brittany Canty is the co-founder of a brand called Comfort Eats. This business idea came about when she was visiting her best friend and co-founder, Reina in New Zealand. When Brittany visited, she came with her suitcase full of snacks from back home that her friend had missed so much. The joy that it brought her friend made them think- how can we ship comfort food to people that can’t find these foods where they live?

Brittany Canty

This is exactly what Comfort Eats does. Brittany and Reina have an online shop where people can have their favorite American snacks shipped to them while in a different country. They said they have seen people from other cultures become interested in their business too, not just Americans who are traveling. Brittany says her past experience as a product manager has given her lots of experience with their business. She tries to set one goal to accomplish a day, giving her freedom while also getting something important accomplished for the business.

Brittany says that she would give her younger self the advice of “trust your gut!”. She explains the world has a way of putting insecurities on young people and making them triple check everything. Her and her friend started this business as young entrepreneurs and they succeeded by being passionate in this one area.

Brittany says that listening to their customers is most important in running Comfort Eats. Their voice is most important in getting the right food delivered that will bring joy in so many ways. Brittany and Reina will continue to grow their business, reaching many people who miss the taste of their hometowns.

Erik Finman

Erik Finman is 19 years old and already taking on huge projects and current issues. Erik is known as the youngest bitcoin millionaire. At the young age of 12, he bought $1,000 worth of bitcoin, he later sold that for around $100,000 and used those funds to start his company Botangle. This company assists in helping students to find personalized tutoring. Among other big projects that Erik is working on, including a project at NASA, he is building a new school and is working to make a big change in the American school system.

I can relate well to the work that Erik is doing in regard to the American school system. As someone who has struggled a lot in school myself, I definitely feel that change is needed in many areas. Tutoring was a huge part of my education that I needed so that I could stay on track with my peers, without it I would not be at the level of education I am today. Being able to give students tutoring and education that is catered to their needs is so important.

Through Erik’s history of buying and selling bitcoin, we can see that he is comfortable with taking risks and his efforts have paid off. Risk is important to being an entrepreneur and an aspect that I am currently working on myself.
