Emma Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain is a name that most people are familiar with if they’ve watched videos on the platform of Youtube. She’s an influencer who began her career on Youtube at only 16 years old. An easily relatable high school student, her quirky editing and honest documentation of her life took off in a way that I’m sure she never imagined it would. The fact that she was so honest and open with her life drew a lot of people to her videos, and she proceeded to gain many subscribers. Currently, Emma’s channel boasts 11.9 million subscribers. She used to post frequently, but since her evolution from an influencer to the fashion world’s darling (plus other pursuits), she’s taken to posting perhaps once or twice a month. Of course, she participates on other channels for their content. For example, she recently gave a house tour on Architectural Digest which racked up 7.2 million views.

Today, she is an ambassador of Louis Vuitton and has attended Paris Fashion Week three times. She was also invited to the Met Gala as a host for Vogue. If some people don’t recognize Emma’s name attached to fashion, they may recognize it attached to coffee. She began her own coffee brand, Chamberlain Coffee, which is committed to giving customers organic, delicious, sustainable coffee in 2019. Her podcast, Anything Goes, began in 2019 as well, in which Emma discusses anything and everything on her mind as the name might suggest.

There has been backlash about Emma and other influencers being invited to what used to be considered “elite events”. In an interview with V magazine, Emma said this about the changing definition of celebrity and what that could mean for the fashion world: “In a sense, the fashion world itself has been around forever and influencers and digital celebrities are very new and haven’t necessarily earned their stripes yet … I understand that kind of discomfort from people who have been into fashion since they were younger (where) maybe it was before this was all a thing and seeing digital influencers come in feels wrong. At the same time, the world of fashion and fame has to evolve in order for it to grow, so this is a natural part of that and it only makes sense.”

Again, this age of media and her soaring success proves that pretty much anyone is capable of doing great things and achieving unthinkable accomplishments if they just put themselves out there. It may seem difficult to think of influencers as typical entrepreneurs, but they are really just investing in themselves as a business. Some do go on to start more normal types of businesses with the platform of followers that they have built.

From a normal high school teenager to walking red carpets, Emma has broken past the typical influencer timeline. Many influencers peak in their careers and face a steady decline. They get invited to less events, make less money, and go viral less often as the viewers move on to the next big thing. Emma chose to go big or go home, branching out as far as she can. It took her far, and as she begins to become more comfortable in the elite fashion world, I can see her carving out a unique niche for herself as a self-made influencer to celebrity.

Raelynn’s Materials

Raelynn Heath is a young entrepreneur that had her hit idea at the age of 4. I don’t know about you but that is insane to me that at the age of 4 she had her own business! I can tell you that that was not what I was doing at the age of 4. She is from Raytown, Missouri and started her business selling her own jewelry. Her business is called Raelynn’s Materials. She focuses on creating her own jewelry along with repairing others. The piece of jewelry she specializes in are bracelets. Her main platform for selling her product is on Facebook and Etsy. For her different types of jewelry, she makes it out of various materials. It varies from plastic beads all the way to polymer clay. Additionally to that, she even recycles different materials to add into these lovely pieces of jewelry. From this business she hopes to expand into the fashion industry. With her products she even donates back to the community by donating jewelry to those that have went through some sort of traumatizing event. Not only is she a talented individual she is also caring to the community. Just like any kid she has big dreams. She hopes to someday have a storefront in Paris and believes she will be a millionaire at the age of 16!

Jaffry Mallari

Jaffry Mallari is the creator of the clothing brand Resurgence, where he creates fashion based upon his graphic designs. He started from the bottom, and rose his way up to success by scraping by with every cent he could use to make even basic designs to sell. His efforts paid off generously, and he has many consumers that love his designs.

In high school, Jaffry realized that he wanted to take his love for designing graphics to the next level, and make it his career. He started out with only $400, but was still determined to create a thriving business that he would pour everything he had into. He views clothes as a “canvas” where he can use his artistic abilities to create a design that others would enjoy. He took two unrelated ideas: fashion and art, and combined them to create Resurgence.

He struggled greatly with finding funding to create his designs, and since they were so limited in the beginning, his designs were basic and lacked originality. Another challenge he faced was discovering an audience that would be interested in his designs, but he used his love for the platform Discord to reach out to others. Now, he has a vast audience just from his Discord use.

Jaffry Mallari is an excellent example of a successful young entrepreneur, because he created a successful, and innovative brand out of close to nothing. His efforts inspire others to realize that ideas are achievable no matter the limitations, and to follow their passions.

Jenni Lee – Comme Si

Comme Si – Luxury Socks

In business as in fashion, attention to detail separates the good from the great—and if anyone understands the value of sweating the small stuff, it’s Jenni Lee. Jenni Lee is a young entrepreneur who created the company Comme Si, which makes luxury Italian-made socks that are made to feel as good as they look. Lee’s vision for her company was to make socks that would be a functional luxury piece in your wardrobe. She says, “As a woman who cares about every aspect of my wardrobe, I wanted socks to reflect what I look for in other fine accessories – designed well, made well, substantive”. I think this is a great and very innovative idea for an area where there is not much change. Lee says, “For me, this process is about reinvention; taking a common idea or concept, like wearing socks, and finding ways to infuse a fresh perspective through creativity, originality, utility, and nuance.” This shows great entrepreneurial traits and mindset. Wearing luxury socks goes beyond letting your toes live in luxe fabrics. It is for your own personal feeling. It can also be something that you wear to signal your considered aesthetic to others. Socks may be small, but they really do contribute to an outfit’s composition.

Nicole Dutra: Dutraville

In Ellicott City, MD, Nicole Dutra found a passion for hand dying clothes and fabrics. After years of experimentation with different methods of tie dying, she found ice dying her favorite. A couple more years later, she decided to sell her work and create a business out of it. She named her business Dutraville, and creates all of her pieces from home. She sells her work both from Instagram and Etsy, but she also does custom orders. Nicole provides excellent customer service with both quick shipping and, if you’re in the area, she will even drive it to you. She even will give you a personal tour of her studio and explain the process behind ice dying, show you all of her dyes, and even let you help her get a project started! She sells everything from tote bags to hoodies to Turkish towels, and she provides a discount if you want her to dye an article of clothing (or other cotton piece) that you already have. Her business is still growing, but it is definitely already worth her time. Nicole has had stands at many small business fairs, most commonly being outside Su Casa on Main Street in Old Ellicott City one Saturday of every month. She has even had the opportunity to partner with other small business owners and combine their products and skills! Dutraville is one of my favorite small businesses to support.

Lirika Matoshi

Most people who have Tiktok or any form of social media remember “The Strawberry Dress” that took the internet by storm in 2020. It almost seems strange how such a fanciful dress became so sought after and coveted in a time where no one was going out and wearing beautiful clothes. Despite the hardships that quarantine brought, this fairly expensive dress became the best-selling item in Lirika Matoshi’s collection. Women who were software engineers, stay-at-home mothers, nurses, young teenage girls in high school all agreed that the dress was absolutely beautiful, bringing to mind the Tiktok concept “cottage-core,” more easily defined as rural bliss (which was how Vogue described it). “Most of my designs are inspired by my childhood. I feel like the things that make me feel better are the strawberries, the dress, the gowns, nature in general,” Matoshi said about the nostalgic feel the dress evoked. This dress was not practical by any means and there were very few places to which people could wear it in which the dress would make sense…but that didn’t stop the mass excitement over this gorgeous “princess” dress.

Lirika Matoshi, originally from Kosova, is only 26 years old. A self-taught designer without any formal fashion school training, she learned to make everything she has from her sister, designer Teuta Matoshi. She began with making accessories when she was only 20 and made the courageous leap of moving to New York. Since then, she has only expanded her line of accessories and clothes. In 2020, her business took off with the Strawberry Dress. Now, she outfits numerous influencers and celebrities and her label has a following of almost one million. With her significant platform and accomplishments, she has been added to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. The emergence of social media has been able to push designers and artists to become huge names among influencers who have so much sway over young consumers. As a self-taught artist myself, I’m glad to see that the possibilities truly are endless and the algorithms of social media platforms may be the answer to success. Anyone can put themselves out there. All it takes is one post, one dress for something to take off.

Lasso Gear

Lasso Gear is an athletic apparel company based in Los Angeles, California that specializes in performance socks. Lasso Gear implements scientific research with personal experience to present socks that mimic the technology of ankle taping and ankle braces to provide faster, more easily accessible heightened performance and increased recover. Lasso Gear was started by a young entrepreneur named Partha Unnava, a friend of mine, who had a serious ankle injury playing basketball in his youth. Partha was frustrated with the limited options of recover for his injury so he used his background in biomedical engineering to a create a visually elegant sock that provided very similar benefits to ankle taping or braces. I have spoken to Partha several times during at my previous job, and he has described his upbringing and key points to being successful as a young entrepreneur. The two points that stood out to me the most was the importance of being unique in a very competitive space and implementing one’s own story or background into their product. Partha described the intensive research and trial and error he partook in to finalize his product especially in an extremely competitive space such as sportswear. Partha stresses the need to stick out in one way or another in order to gain any sort of competitive advantage especially as a small business. Furthermore, implementing one’s own life story, upbringing, background, etc. can be used to bring a unique aspect to a product or service. People tend to gravitate towards a product if the meaning behind it is well produced and presents heightened value.

Plastic Fashion

Some of the best entrepreneurs are simply good at addition. Robert Luo was passionate about fashion and he was passionate about reducing food waste – so what did he do? He added. By combining the two passions he formed his business, Mi Terro. Mi Terro is a company that turns waste, particularly food waste, into fashion items. His first fashion-from-waste product was a duffle bag; the company utilized natural cork and plastic garbage from the ocean to make them. People have made bags using unique materials before, but this was the first of its kind. After this endeavor Luo began to think of other ways to help further reduce waste. An idea came to him while at his uncle’s dairy farm in China. His uncle’s dairy buyer had switched to another supplier, leaving his uncle with endless buckets of spoiled milk. Where most would see a problem, Robert Luo saw an opportunity. Using biogenetics, this milk could be processed into fiber which could then be made into T-shirts. Luo could turn spoiled milk into consumable apparel, and if there were any doubts in his mind about general interest in this product, they were soon quenched when his Kickstarter fundraiser collected all the needed money in just 2 hours! People like the idea of turning waste into something usable – and not just buyers, investors are interested as well. He’s been working with many different companies that are fascinated by the product and that realize its potential. Despite his present success, Luo’s business had not begun well. He says he cold-emailed 1000 journalists and of the mere six that replied, all of them said no. It was Luo’s admirable perseverance that got his company off the ground, he suffered so many sleepless and stressful times to get where he is now.

Destiny Snow is young with fashion

At a young age, Destiny Snow had a passion for fashion. She looked for something she enjoyed to get started in her business. After lots of research, she started her fashion product company. After lots of trial and error, she found some success. In the first 2 years, her company was worth over 1 million dollars.

Seeking a niche that you have a high interest in can really drive your motivation. Also looking up to a certain person such as another entrepreneur, and understanding their process of success, can help lead you to a successful future. The person Snow looks up to is her mom. Her mom has helped other young entrepreneurs and has small businesses of her own.

Some of Snow’s strategies consist of looking for a business partner who is also passionate about the idea and using social media platforms to promote your product.

Snow today inspires young entrepreneurs like herself. Snow helps them to find success in whatever their interests might be. She believes that if you believe in yourself then you can create opportunities to become successful.
