Dasha Derkach

Dasha Derkach started her company, Enchanted Scrunch, in 2021 after struggling to find the perfect scrunchies for her outfits. Pairing her passion for fashion with her sewing skills, Dasha was able to grow her business to include over 300 designs (all of which are handmade)! When the 14-year old entrepreneur initially promoted her products on TikTok, she had no idea that she’d cultivate a loyal customer base and nearly 186K followers.

What is most impressive about Dasha’s story is her incredible work ethic. Not only does she manage her own company, she is still a full time student and dancer. While she doesn’t make every scrunchie herself now that the orders flood in so frequently, Dasha is a fair and equitable boss who makes sure to pay her employees (parents) for their hard work.

Dasha has put the ‘fun’ into ‘functional’ with her high quality products, so make sure to check out her shop!

Who even cares if its cold outside?

MONTEC does, and they have found the solution to people’s “cold shoulder” about hitting the slopes. We have all been there, out skiing with some friends when you’re only your fourth or fifth run in and you start to feel the cold creeping up your spine, you know that the day has only just started but your sweatshirt and puffer jacket just are not making the cut. Being cold sucks, especially if you’re trying to enjoy yourself in it, which is exactly what Montec wants to fix.

Founded in Sweeden in 2016, Frank and Lorena Montefusco began to develop a winter jacket that would keep all riders and cold weather enjoyers warm all day. Their jackets “hit the sweet spot of fashion and functionality.” The waterproof jackets blow the rest of the competition OUT of the water and keep themselves dry in the process. As a Montec user myself, I can say with confidence that all you need to wear underneath is a t-shirt because they WILL keep you warm. It works like a sleeping bag, the one-piece layered shell reflects your body temperature back onto itself and the reoccurring process prevents the body from cooling off. I have even found at times that I need to air myself out because I can start to sweat in them, which on the cold days is not a problem at all.

The company has something for everyone and all of their intricately designed products will last for many seasons. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to stay warm or to look great on the mountain.

Mo’s Bows

Moziah Bridges was only nine years old when he founded Mo’s Bows, a high-end bow tie business based in Memphis, Tennessee. Mo’s grandmother, a retired seamstress, taught him how to make bow ties when he was young, and Moziah soon developed a strong passion for fashion. Mo’s Bows creates quality handcrafted bow ties and the business has flourished since its founding in 2011. Moziah is currently 20 years old and serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

Originally, Mo sold his products on Etsy but, pivoting from his original model, soon opened his company with the help of his mom. To this day, all of Mo’s bow ties are handcrafted by him and his mom. After founding the company, the charismatic young Moziah began seeing massive growth and publicity. Mo appeared on numerous major networks, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Disney Channel. Since its founding, Mo’s Bows has amassed over $700,000 in sales revenue and has an estimated net worth of $2 million.

In 2015, 11-year-old Mo and his mom appeared on Shark Tank for Mo to pitch his idea to the investors. This led to Shark Daymond John, an American investor and businessman, signing on to Mo’s business as Mo’s mentor. Additionally, Mo served as fashion correspondent for the 2015 NBA Draft and made custom neckties and bow ties for all NBA teams by 2017. Since 2012, Mo has used his income to help children in his hometown area attend summer camp. In 2019, Mo published a book for young entrepreneurs entitled Mo’s Bows: A Young Person’s Guide to Startup Success. In it, Mo talks about his journey as a young entrepreneur and how young entrepreneurs can succeed in their own businesses.

Moziah has honed his unique skills to create a brand with strong personality and distinctiveness. Mo’s story is a good example of ideation for young entrepreneurs. On Shark Tank, Mo gave this advice to other young entrepreneurs:

Figure out what you like doing and find out how you can make money doing it.

This is exactly what young Mo did. He took a skill he had and created a high-quality brand that has taken off. While not all young entrepreneurs may become as well-known as Mo, we can all be inspired by his persistence and innovation in a highly competitive market.

Bella Weems: Origami Owl

Bella Weems is a 28-year-old who is the founder of the jewelry company Origami Owl. At just 14 years old, she turned her passion into a business after her parents told her she would have to earn her first car. Her passion for handcrafting jewelry turned into a multi-million-dollar business.See the source image

Origami Owls main product is called the “Living Locket” which is a locket which you can add in your own, personalized charms to. This is unique because each charm can represent the persons hobbies and interests and showcase them when they wear the necklace. Bella also sells bracelets, earrings, and other accessories.

Bella is a busy kid entrepreneur, but she still allots time to give back. She started the “Owlettes Initiative” in which she personally mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs ages 12-17. Bella shares tips with these kids and any advice from her success story. I think this part of her business is truly inspiring because she found a way to help others as well as keep up a successful business.

Bella says the best part of being a kid entrepreneur is, “…being able to encourage kids of all ages to not be afraid to reach for their dreams and never let anyone tell them they’re not good enough or their idea isn’t good enough.” Bella’s business Origami Owl not only lets people express themselves through their jewelry but inspires young entrepreneurs to take the risk to start making something they are passionate about become big.

Back for Mo: Moziah Bridges

Moziah Bridges was 9 years old when he crafted the idea for Mo’s Bows. Admittingly, Bridges was in search of an accessory that could enhance any formal attire when he came up with the idea. Growing up, Bridges was surrounded by fashion, particularly what is trendy and formal. Bridges also liked the look of bow ties but struggled to find many that were high quality at the time. He immediately knew where to focus his entrepreneurial urges. After conducting research on the industry, he began to sell the bow ties on Etsy.

In the early days of the company, Mo’s Bows were crafted by Bridges and his mother. Today they are still made by the two. Despite the success of his company, he has not not altered from his roots and continues to craft bows by hand. In 2015, Bridges appeared on Shark Tank and was able to earn a deal with Daymond John. In addition to John’s investment, Bridges was able to be seen by a large audience that would without a doubt be inclined to purchase a similar product. Eventually, Bridges would earn a deal with the NBA that saw him able to produce products with NBA team’s official logos.

As of now, Bridges is graduating high school, but his business has not slowed down. Rather, it has continued to increase and has led to Bridges meeting two (now former) presidents! Bridges’ story is inspiring for multiple reasons. Not only did he create something scalable and impactful at the age of 9. He also put an entrepreneurial spin on something that he was passionate about. Bridges saw a market that was underutilized and attacked it. At his age, he knew that experience was a field that he just needed more time for. By appearing and forging a deal with Daymond, Bridges was able to gain valuable knowledge that might be unattainable elsewhere as well as a connection that many would do anything for.

Raelynn Heath: Rae’s Materials

Raelynn Heath is an 8-year-old girl from Missouri who started her own jewelry business at the age of 4. She specializes at making bracelets which she sells on Facebook and Etsy. Raelynn was recently featured in the “1 Million Cups Black Entrepreneurship Showcase” on Feb. 2

8, 2018, at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Raelynn started making her bracelets out of plastic but upgraded to using acrylic and bubblegum beads when she was 5, and even uses materials like polymer clay. Raelynn also enjoys upcycling items such as chip bags, duct tape rolls, and old clothes. Raelynn’s business is unique because she has a generous purpose in creating most of her work. She gives bracelets to community members who have experienced recent trauma. Her big heart is a motivating factor of her business. Rae’s Materials is also unique because Raelynn has created this business at such a young age. Being able to create these bracelets at the age of four is a special talent, and it is amazing that she is using her talent to help those in need.

Raelynn hopes to increase her business to other areas of fashion as well but knows that school is her first priority at the moment. She hopes to study in Paris someday and get a degree in fashion. It is impressive that Raelynn has such a clear idea of how she wants her future business to expand at such a young age. Raelynn’s mom is in the process of helping her get a business license for Rae’s Materials, and her mom suspects that she could be on her way to a millionaire at age 16. Raelynn’s hopeful outlook and creativity has gotten her far in her entrepreneurial journey, and she will continue to grow her jewelry business using her great skill.

Culture of Life-COL1972

Culture of Life 1972 is an online boutique that was created for the sole reason that there werenot clothing companies supporting the “values of life” that the family that started the company wanted supported.  COL1972 for short, is a self described risk taking and faith based company, started in Pennsylvania.  The 1972 part of the company’s name is to honor the last year that every baby had the right to life.  They donate to many places that support their values including places like pregnancy centers.  COL1972 produces high quality women’s clothing and accessories that support and fund important causes to the company.  They are strongly against abortion, hence the name, so that is a cause that they donate a lot of money to.  Their clothes are high quality and fashionable which appeals to a broad market, even if the customer does not specifically support the companies causes, they may still want the clothing and accessories just because they like them.  I believe that COL1972 is a great example of not remaking the wheel and coming up with something completely new, they just made it better and created a niche.  The market for clothing companies, or companies in general for that matter that support causes that the consumer themselves is interested in supporting is nothing new.  COL1972 just happened to tap into a set of customers that had to my knowledge, never been appealed to before in this way.

Mo’s Bows – Improving Men’s Style One Bowtie at a Time

One entrepreneur that I found inspirational was Moziah Bridges, the founder of Mo’s Bows – a bowtie and fashion accessory business for men. In the about section of his business’ website, Mo details how his career as an entrepreneur started very small and in a personal setting. He was nine years old and sitting in his grandma’s kitchen, wondering what to wear. He says that he wasn’t able to find the look he was going for, and wanted to find fashion that would allow him to express his personality more – so he put the phrase “be the change you want to see in the world” into action and started his own bowtie business (that has now expanded into selling neck ties and pocket squares and other fashion accessories as well). He’s appeared on several broadcasting shows such as The Steve Harvey Show and Shark Tank. He’s also written a book for entrepreneurs.

You can find his website and store here: https://mosbowsmemphis.com/

What I found interesting and inspirational about Mo’s Bows was that the idea came from a mundane, personal moment. There seems to be this perception of entrepreneurship that says that good ideas happen in light bulb moments, or great moments of inspiration that happen once in a billion ideas. It tells young entrepreneurs that only the geniuses make it in this field, and that average IQ, mundane “me” has no chance. This isn’t true though – you don’t have to be a “genius”, or come up with an idea that is more exceptional than everyone else’s – good ideas really can start anywhere, and often they start in small personal moments like Moziah’s. Another thing that struck me is how successful Moziah Bridges has been with such a small accessory. Physical size is irrelevant, but I found this inspiring because maybe he isn’t solving world hunger, but he took a specific niche and made a business out of it – and he does it well. It’s inspiring to see that there are opportunities like these, where the actual product may be small, but it makes a world of difference for the individual just the same because it adds style and beauty to the individual’s wardrobe.

Jacob Zander, Spreading Positivity and Inspiration Through Footsouls.

Jacob Zander, a 23 year old from Santa Barbara, became a young entrepreneur after taking a college business class. He wrote in an article last year about how he developed an idea that he had been pondering through this class. At the end of the semester, Jacob had a product and a vision that he was ready and able to pitch to an investor.

Jacob’s idea of Footsouls, insoles for Converse, started when he was an employee at Trader Joe’s. With his friends, he frequently discussed that, although they wanted to wear their Converse to work, they always opted not to as they were too uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. To gauge initial interest for his product and idea, he asked his co-workers about it and sought their opinions. After this, because of his teacher, friends, traveling, and TikTok, Jacob’s insoles went viral.

Through his company and with his product, Jacob wants to inspire people and spread positivity. The product itself, a cream insole with the lettering “Feel Your Soul” written on it, was created to remind people every time they put their shoes on, to go out and truly live their lives. In addition to the insoles for Converse, Jacob’s company has expanded to creating insoles for Vans, clothing, and roller skates! Along with this, the company has a “Smile Fund” that takes a designated amount of every Footsouls purchase and uses it to give back to others.

What makes Jacob particularly creative, is his use of social media to help his company reach so many people. Before Footsouls was even born, Jacob filmed his entire creative and business process. Transparency was a huge goal of Jacob’s.  He wanted to show others his success hoping that they would gain the confidence they needed to succeed. Then, once he was able to manufacture the insoles, he began creating and posting TikToks. He used this as a way to advertise but also to give people a behind-the-scenes view of packaging and shipping process.

Since 2017, when Jacob was just beginning his journey with Footsouls, he has come a long way. With the help of mentors, friends, and social media, Jacob is inspiring others to follow their dreams and live every day to the fullest!

Maya’s Idea – Sustainable Fashion

When Maya Penn was 8-years-old, she was a fun-loving, creative, nature-loving girl. She loved creating things and she had a passion for taking care of the environment. She always saw so much beauty in nature. So in 2008, when Maya found out that fashion companies use toxic dyes and toxic materials in their products she was devastated. She didn’t understand why designers and fast fashion companies had to put so much strain on the universe. It was then that she came up with the idea for Maya’s Idea.

Maya’s Idea is a sustainable fashion company. They use only vintage, recycle materials and natural dyes. These dyes can be anything from fruit and tea to other naturally occurring herbs. The materials are things such as bio-based organic materials and vintage fabrics. The style of these products is fashion-forward designs with a vintage flair. Everything that she makes is one of a kind and handmade. When you order something from Maya, you are getting something special and personal. This is she stands out and makes a change. Making clothes isn’t a revolutionary idea, but it is making it in a sustainable way that sets it apart. She focuses a lot on the importance of how everything we do affects the environment. It is companies like hers that put a spotlight on fast fashion brands that are so damaging to the environment.

Maya Penn is only 21 years old and has made a significant difference in the fashion industry. She has given three TED talks, has been recognized by notable people, such as former President Barack Obama, for all of her work, and has many different partnerships with different brands. It is inspiring to see that she took her passion for the environment and her creative eye to make something amazing. She has built a brand that is so influential and it is helping reinvent the whole fashion industry.
