Sofia Overton – Success In Her Pockets

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket Products

At age 11, Sofia Overton started her company Wise Pocket Products because she wanted to help children who are active as well as those who are in need. She realized there was a lack of pocket space when she saw her cousin put her phone in her sock. After trying this for herself, she spotted the inefficiency of this method and wanted to fix this problem. She decided to make socks with pockets in them. After finding success with this product, she has decided to expand her business to sell leggings as well.

Overton, recognizing there are millions of children in need, wanted the core of her business’ mission to help children. For every pair of socks sold by Wise Pocket Products, a pair is donated to children in need. “Wise Pocket Products believes that if you make sure a child has warm feet they will always have a warm heart knowing that their community cares for them.” (Overton)

Overton saw the problems of lack of pocket space and also children who were in need. She fixed both of these issues with one solution. Overton is not only making a profit but is also giving people an opportunity to make a difference in their communities. For these reasons, it is clear to see her entrepreneurial gifts.

Sofia Overton: The Power of Pockets

Sofia Overton has wanted to be on Shark Tank since she was six. With a mind primed for innovation, it did not take her long to find her niche. An observer by nature, in 2017 Sofia noticed her older cousin struggling to store her phone in her pocket-less leggings. Sofia watched her cousin put the phone in her boot, so she tried it but found it too uncomfortable.

That is what started her entrepreneurial career. She designed a prototype sock with a pocket to hold her phone. It worked great and Wise Pockets was born. Through crowdfunding, Sofia was able to raise enough money for manufacturing. Crowdfunding can be a hit or miss risk, but for her it was a resounding success.

It worked so well that she expanded to leggings with pockets designed for carrying phones. It worked so well in fact, she earned spotlight attention and made it to Shark Tank in summer of 2020, scoring two investors.

Her self-confidence has set Sofia up for success and she is not afraid to look for new angles; she inspires with her ability to find problems with daily life and come up with a way to solve them.

Another important aspect of entrepreneurship, Sofia has a kind philanthropic heart. Impacted by the rate of homelessness at her school, she determined for every pair of socks sold one would be given to a child in need.

She said, “We are Generation Z kids who want their purchases to make a difference.” Sofia Overton is heading the wave of teenagers striving to make the world a better place. Both with purchasing, and with the opportunities they can offer the world by opening up their mind and not being afraid to use their gifts.  Sofia shows us the mindset of the Gen Z.

Allbirds: Eco-Friendly, Minimalist Shoes

Allbirds co-founder Tim Browncdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1104/4168/t/980/asset...

As Americans, most of us can say we own one, if not multiple pairs of shoes. For Tim Brown, founder of Allbirds shoe company and former professional soccer player, an over-abundance of shoes prompted his desire for a change in the shoe industry. As Brown progressed in his soccer career, he realized that the numerous shoes he received from his sponsor were “completely unnecessary.” Due to Brown’s experience with an over-abundance of shoes as a soccer player, he let this drive his vision for the Allbirds shoe company. Brown envisioned a shoe that would innovate in reverse. Instead of choosing to add to already technical and detailed shoe designs, he chose to “strip back the shoe and create something simple and natural.” The foundation for Brown’s Allbirds company was one that innovated in reverse. Not only did Brown aim to create a minimalist shoe, but he furthered his efforts by committing to sustainability. Brown continued this vision of minimalism as he chose to use renewable, sustainable resources to build his shoes. For example, Brown and Zwillinger (engineer and renewables expert), crafted a shoe which incorporates eucalyptus fibers containing cooling properties. This creates a running shoe which naturally cools your sweaty feet. Below is a picture of these shoes made from eucalyptus trees.

Men's Tree Runners - Wheat (Dark Beige Sole)“Allbirds: Tree Runners”

EVERY part of these shoes are comprised from renewable resources. The laces are crafted from consumer plastics, the insole of the shoe is made from castor bean oil which emits less carbon than petroleum based foam, the mid-sole is made of sugarcane from Brazil, and the upper is made from the eucalyptus tree fiber.

The royal crown of Allbirds consists of their use of marino wool shoe material. In continuing with their mantra of sustainability, Allbirds uses marino sheep wool as the majority of their shoe material. In New Zealand, where the company is based and Brown’s home, sheep outnumber humans 6:1. Using sheep wool reduces the use of energy by 60% compared to that of most shoes on the market.

One of the entrepreneurial traits that Brown exudes is passion. It was quite evident through my research of this company that Brown has a profound passion for protecting our earth yet providing style in a simple way. I love how he thought creatively about the simplifying of shoes rather than trying to add to an already very complex shoe industry. By stripping down the shoe to its basic function and fashion, Brown was able to create a product which people thoroughly enjoy due to its performance and contribution to our plant.

“Mother Nature is our muse. Building on her handiwork, we’re finding new uses for materials that exist right in front of us. Like wool from merino sheep, who have the best hair in nature.” – Tim Brown

Moziah Bridges: Bowties for the Boys

Moziah Bridges is a fifteen-year-old CEO of his own fashion line. At such a young age he has embraced his colorful style and his driven personality has taken him far. The fashion industry fell in love with his designs and Mo featured on shark tank in 2014 when he was ten.

His main focus started with bowties; Moziah had always had an acute sense of style but the fashion market was too boring for his taste. So, he took matters into his own hands with the help of his granny.

The business started as a hobby, with a desire to be fashionable and make the world a more colorful place. Mo’s mission has remained constant with his ever-growing fame. A 600,000 dollar business started with just a sewing machine. Mo’s first bowties were made from scraps of his grandmother’s dresses and curtains, first just for himself. As word got around however, he started selling over Facebook and later Etsy.

It did not take long for news networks to take notice of the young entrepreneur with his bright designs and Moziah has made appearances on the Oprah Magazine, the Steve Harvey Show and others. Even the NBA was taken with his style and Mo got a licensing deal to use their logo in his designs.

Ever the model entrepreneur, Mo has not only been an innovator and a risk taker, he has used his success to benefit others. Very tied to his hometown of Memphis, he wanted to give other kids there the ability find their own opportunities. He paid for several children to attend a summer camp. His philanthropic personality and love for color have fueled the basis of his business.

Maybe on of his most amazing traits is his drive. Never letting his age keep him from pursuing his dreams, Moziah Bridges is the perfect example of entrepreneurs coming in every age.

Sneaker Empire: Keith Adam

Background of Sneaker Reselling

Many young teenagers dream of starting their own youtube channel, and one day making a career out of it.  That’s where it all started for 19 year old, Keith Adam, about three years ago.  Keith has a passion for buying and selling sneakers.  Not your every day Walmart sneaker, but instead very limited high demand sneakers like Kanye West’s “Yeezy”, and Jordan basketball shoes.  These shoes sell out instantly online and in store, and resell on the aftermarkets like Ebay, StockX, and other sites for sometimes up to 10 times the retail value of the shoe.  This business is very similar to those who flip real estate.  They typically buy the property for a low price, and end up selling it for a much higher price and earning profit.  This high profit margin makes reselling sneakers very appealing to young entrepreneurs.

Starting on Youtube

In 2016, Keith began his youtube journey at 16 years old.  He started producing videos with tips on how to get these limited shoes online and in store before they sell out.  His first videos did not immediately gain much popularity in views, and he rarely made any money on youtube.  After about a year making sneaker videos on youtube, Keith began to gain a following and produce interest in his channel.  His following was mostly marketed to other teenagers like him, who have a passion for sneakers, and wanted to find a way to make extra money from home.

Finding Ways to Innovate

About two years ago, Keith wanted to find a way to set himself apart from other sneakers Youtubers.  He started off using social media to promote himself and gain a bigger following from teenagers.  Keith did a lot of research to figure out a way that he could earn money outside of youtube.  This is where he discovered an app called “Discord.”  Discord is an app that is typically targeted toward video gamers.  It is a platform where groups can form and share ideas, create channels, and communicate through messages, video chat, and voice chat.  This was appealing to Keith, because it allowed him to charge his fans a monthly fee, similar to subscriptions like Netflix, in order to access his reselling information.  His focus was to continue using youtube and social media for small bits of information on reselling, but to focus on a paid subscription to Discord in order to gain full access to his content and reselling advice. He began offering his service through Discord for a small fee of $15 per month.  He used his social media and youtube channel to promote this new service, and it immediately sold out.  Keith was thrilled by the interest in his new Discord group, and from there, his career took off.

Keiths Success Today

Today, Keith continues to produce youtube videos and is active on social media, but his main focus is on Discord.  The interest in Keiths group has grown exponentially, which allows him to increase the price for his service.  Today, you can access Keiths Discord group for a steep monthly fee of $65.  Keith realized that in order to make his group stand out from other competing resellers, he has to produce the best information.  With this expensive monthly fee, Keith employs about a dozen “moderators” in his Discord group, who work around the clock finding out the best information regarding shoes.  These employees allow Keith the freedom to focus on other ways to improve, rather than having to solely work around the clock in order to help the thousands of his Discord subscribers through sneaker releases.  Keith continues to inspire many young teenagers to find a passion for sneakers and the hustle of reselling valuable sneakers.

The Founder of ‘Modern Picnic’

Ali Kaminetsky came up with the idea for her business, Modern Picnic, only a couple weeks after graduating from Lehigh University in 2016. Modern Picnic sells lunch boxes that are not only features practical features such as insulated interiors, but also is fashionable.

Ali says the idea for a fashionable high quality lunch box line came after moving to New York City and starting a job in retail. She realized that bringing her lunch to work every day was faster, cheaper, and healthier than buying food every day. Yet, only a week after being in her new job she saw a gap in the lunch box market. As a business professionals, she didn’t have a good option as to what to pack her lunch in. Carrying a plastic bags was not professional for the work setting and most lunch boxes on the market were designed with child-like patterns to appeal to children taking lunches to school. Ali realized that professional adults could use a high-quality, practical lunch box that was still sleek and stylish.

She chose to leave her traditional job behind after a few months in order to ensure that her new business would be a success. Her business, Modern Picnic, has grown exponentially and proved to be very successful. Since the start of the business Ali has expanded the business model by incorporating a goal of sustainability. Each of the products is made with sustainability in mind and every product that features leather material is vegan. Ali clearly shows her entrepreneurial skills by her identification of the problem and taking a risk to pursue solving it. She took an existing product that had not been redesigned for a long time (the lunch box) and put her own twist on it in order to penetrate an existing market (the working professional).

Sustainable Fashion Search Engine

Project CECE

In 2016, sisters Melissa and Marcella Wijngaarden founded Project Cece a tech and fashion startup. They saw the struggle of finding sustainable clothing in a world of ever-changing fashion. A study found that only 1% of all clothing is produced under fair working conditions. These fast fashion trends are polluting the world and resulting in large amounts of CO2 emissions.  While thrift stores exist and support the recycling of clothes, they saw a need for an online shop that collected the offerings at one convenient shop. They believed sustainable fashion should be easy and fun to find while erasing the stigma against sustainable fashion. Recycled clothes need to be the new fashion normal.

How does it work?

The website organizes clothes based on brands so you can shop over 300 brands and stores all of which are sustainable fashion for the environment. Their website is able to support sustainable brands and retailers both small and large names. These brands are working to force the fashion industry to make a change. With each clothing item, ethics and sustainability is provided. Filters also exist to shop on sustainability labels such as vegan, fair trade, good cause, environmentally friendly, or locally produced.

Found Success

Project CECE has received over 50,000 in student investment funds and student-run venture capital funds. Founded in the Netherlands, the sisters have been able to grow their startup into Germany and the United Kingdom. As they continue to expand their brands and shipping locations they will find more success. Their biggest goal is to make a change in the fashion industry and with every clothing item sold they are helping sustainable brands and taking business from brands that provide unfair work conditions and wages.

#chalamania

Just as Leonardo Dicaprio changed the way Generation X viewed the film industry, Timothee Chalamet has now become the spokesperson for millenials in the world of Hollywood. The 23-year-old French American actor has branded himself as hip, relaxed, and edgy—a combination that has many young millennials swooning. His breakout role was in Call me by Your Name, a coming-of-age indie film that grossed $41.9 M worldwide. He’s also had major roles in movies like Interstellar, Lady Bird, and Beautiful Boy, and shows like Law and Order, Homeland, and The King.

Over the past two years, he’s been nominated for two Golden Globes and an Academy Award for best actor. The New York Times named Chalamet one of the best actors of the year, and he appeared in the Forbes’ 30 under 30 list as one of the most influential people in the Hollywood and Entertainment category.

In addition to being a millenial forerunner on the big screen, Chalamet is also revolutionizing the runway. According to Lyst’s Year of Fashion Index, he is currently the most influential man in fashion. In the 2019 report, he was second best overall, following only Meghan Markle. You’re probably wondering: what makes this guy so special? Well, unlike many other Hollywood actors, Chalamet designs his own red-carpet looks, without the help of a stylist. His style has been described as, “[a mix] between traditional masculinity and femininity, often choosing slim, soft tailoring over traditionally bold cuts,” which is complete innovation in the fashion industry. If nothing else, Chalamet’s outfit choices have inspired young men worldwide to experiment with printed tees, white sneakers, and bomber jackets.

While not everybody can agree on the ethical affiliation of his movies, Timothee Chalamet’s innovation within Hollywood is undeniable, which is what makes him such an influential millennial entrepreneur.

The Rise of Roolee

Roolee is a trendy and boutique fashion and lifestyle brand founded by Kylee Champlin. In addition to women’s clothing, her store sells kids and baby clothing, accessories, home décor, and gifts.

Champlin was a graduate of Utah State University. In 2013, after working at a local boutique for several years, she was given the opportunity to buy it. Inspired by a lack of desirable shopping options in her hometown, she decided to give it a unique flair and make it her own. Since then, Roolee has grown into brick-and-morter locations, developed an online shopping empire, and began construction on their headquarters.

Although she makes it seem like an easy task, Champlin admits that being a millennial entrepreneur hasn’t always been a cake walk. In an interview on Roolee’s blog, she admitted that in the beginning, there was nobody to answer her questions or give her guidance, so a large part of their growth came from trial and error. Champlin advises new business owners to “[not] get discouraged and remain patient. Success takes time. Hard work and talent will get you there, but you can’t do it alone, and it doesn’t happen overnight.

In addition to Champlin’s professional accomplishments, she is also passionate about women loving and empowering each other. Roolee has partnered with and donated profits to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, as well as developed their own social media movement— “A World of Sisters.”

The way that Champlin has integrated and revolutionized millennial boutique fashion is remarkable. She is continuing to innovate and adapt, which is why Roolee is one of the most popular niche brands, and she’s one of the most influential millennial entrepreneurs.
