Good for the body and good for the taste buds!

The notable entrepreneur for today is Alina Morse.

Alina Morse, Founder and CEO of Zollipops

She is the founder and owner of Zolli Candy which is a twist on normal candy. She sells candy that is orally healthy and still just as tasty. The first candies that she ever sold were called Zollipops. According to Inside Edition (Meet Alina Morse, the 14-Year-Old CEO of a Multimillion-Dollar Candy Empire | Inside Edition),

Zolli Candy is sold in about 25,000 major retailers across the country, including Walmart and Walgreens, and the company’s first product, the Zollipop, is the No. 3 best-selling lollipop on Amazon. They taste like normal sweets but are sugar-free since they’re made with low-calorie substitutes like xylitol and erythritol.

Alina’s story started when she was only 7 years old. She was on a trip and someone at a shop was offering lollipops and like any other kid Alina wanted one, but her dad refused the candy telling her that the sugar was bad for her teeth. That caused her to think. She wanted to made candy that was safe for the consumers. This started her journey of finding healthy ingredients for her product. She spent $3,750 plus a certain amount from her family to launch her business. At age 9 Alina had the opportunity to sell her product to a regional Whole Foods. That meeting went well because afterwards they began selling her product in their store.  Because she is so passionate about oral health, 10% of her proceeds are gifted to oral health in schools. Additionally, she has stated an organization to teach school kids about the importance of oral hygiene, and when the schools teach the children, she donates her Zollipops to the schools. Her organization is called Million Smiles Initiative. Click this link to learn more: https://millionsmilesinitiative.org/

Tara Bosch: The 22 Year Old That Reinvented Candy

Tara Bosch is the 22 year old founder of Smart Sweets- a company that focuses on providing healthy alternatives to candy as you know it. A year after launching, her company had already sold over one million dollar’s worth in product.

Tara got her inspiration from her grandmother and the desire to make her younger self proud. When Tara was younger, she had an unhealthy relationship with food. She had a turning point when she had a conversation with her grandmother who told her that she regretted eating so much excess sugar over her lifetime as it was having negative impacts on her quality of life. The combination of her grandmother’s advice and her past experience with food gave her the passion to finding healthier alternatives to sugar-filled candy.

Tara started creating candy recipes in her kitchen from scratch and even dropped out of college within two months. After months of trial and error, she finally came up with a recipe using no sugar, sugar alcohols, or artificial sweeteners. In an interview with Forbes she said, “I had no idea what I was doing, but I had the conviction in my heart that I would find a recipe and a way to innovate the first candy that kicks sugar, naturally.”

She got her first retailer by picking up the phone, calling them, and showing up in the store. She describes this experience saying, “I’ll never forget showing up to the first retailer who said ‘yes’ to taking a meeting, my voice shaky and my stomach feeling like it was churning a million miles a minute.” After showing much persistence, she was able to grow the number of retailers at a fast pace.

Her goal is to see more people choose sugar free options in order to have a higher quality of life, while still enjoying the candy they love. Tara didn’t have every single step planned out, but she did have passion and a vision. She pursued this passion with 100% effort and got the results she dreamed of.

Allevi: 3D Bioprinting

Allevi was founded in 2014 to develop 3D printing, but they took this technology in an unusual direction.  3D bioprinting is used by researchers to model disease, create custom 3D tissue, and study the body outside of the body with improved control and repeatability.  Bioprinting is being used in the fields of tissue engineering, bioengineering, and materials science.  This technology also helps with pharmaceutical development by allowing drugs to be tested faster, at a lower cost, and with more accurate results than animal testing.  It is also being used to make biomedical devices such as sugar stents that help surgeons join veins and systems for improved drug delivery.

The bioprinters work similarly to other 3D printers, but they use cells and other biocompatible materials known as bioinks instead of plastic.  The living cells can be mixed into the bioinks or seeded in after the print is finished.  The 3D geometry the bioprinters create is more similar to a natural biological system than any other model researchers have been using.  The models used can come from CT or CAT scans or a CAD program which allows for very accurate models, and researchers can model any geometry they need.  Allevi provides the software necessary to take the model and print on with the bioprinter which makes it easy to use.

There are over 110,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list in the US.  Many others experience chronic problems as a result of the long term damaging effects of immunosuppression Allevi’s goal is to develop bioprinting technology that will allow them to 3D organs to solve this problem.  Bioprinting might also be able to use a patient’s cells to 3D print skin and bone grafts.

Just Two Dads and A Bunch of Medicine

Talc, acetaminophen, red dyes, beetroot extract – are these terms familiar? The answer is probably no, unless you’re someone with medical knowledge of medicines.

David Johnson and Max Spielberg are two longtime friends who sought out to ask themselves what were necessary ingredients in their allergy, common-cold, and pain medicines they were taking, as well as giving to their children. When it came down to the research they found and conducted alongside doctors and scientists, a lot of over-the-counter medicine contained a lot of unnecessary ingredients – aka inactive ingredients – that have actually proven to have health consequences. Between their two financing and legal expertise’s and their research, Johnson and Spielberg launched a medicine business called Genexa.

Genexa is “an over-the-counter medicine brand that’s dedicated to making clean medicines,” and has now found themselves in over 40,000 stores – Target, Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Kroger, and Whole Foods – as well as having an online presence on their own personal website and Amazon. Spielberg commented on the matter saying, “We like to call it real medicine made clean.” Genexa offers an adult product line that has a greater focus on the antacid, laxative, and cough and cold categories, but also has a product line for children that focuses on allergies, cough and cold, pain, fever and sleep products.

Johnson and Spielberg recognized a gap in the knowledge everyday people had about the over-the-counter medicines they take, discovered a need for “cleaning up the products,” and took to their solution by committing their mission to making a difference in peoples’ lives, “staying the course, keeping their head in it, and grinding it out.”

Selena Gomez: Rare Beauty

Rare Beauty - Only at Sephora - YouTube

As many of us know Selena as a successful musician and actress, her skills go far beyond the talents seen in her well known movies or songs. Recently, on September 3rd of this year, Selena released her own cosmetics line named, Rare Beauty. As a makeup and skincare enthusiast myself, I was intrigued to read about her new brand. After some research through the Rare Beauty site and watching reviews, it is clear that Selena made a statement with her new line. With the platform that Selena had already had, she was able to spread awareness of Rare Beauty quickly and began selling on the brands site as well as exclusively being sold at Sephora, online and in stores.

When researching more about her new brand, I began to realize several aspects in her mission behind Rare Beauty that prompted me to write about her for the blog post. Her entrepreneurial mindset is very evident in all she does, especially the thinking behind Rare Beauty. Selena is very passionate about her service and commitment to the communities around her. Selena has opened up throughout the years to the media about her health journey including physical and mental health and hopes to continue to use her voice and actions to make an impact on this community. A large part of the mission behind Rare Beauty is that she wants to be able to raise awareness of mental health and provide impoverished communities with the resources needed in this area.  She plans to do this by every sale of Rare Beauty made, one percent will be donated to raise money for a fund that she started called, The Rare Impact Fund. Selena and her team came up with several goals for the brand, one being to raise 100 million dollars to the fund.  The Rare Impact Fund is meant to increase access to mental health services. Not only did Selena start this fund, but also stated a Rare Beauty Mental Health Council. Lots of thought and planning went into the making of Rare Beauty which will foreseeably be a success since Selena’s dedication and commitment has been present since day one. Selena took the opportunity to give back to a cause she was passionate about, alongside her love for beauty, and create a brand around it. Success has already started not even a month into the debut of the line, beyond the products, consumers have also been intrigued to learn more about the story behind the line. A powerful story to empower women to tear down walls and expectations that society and media has placed onto us, specifically the “unattainable physical perfection”.

We are all rare and are all considered beautiful, and Rare Beauty aims to encourage us to find self acceptance in our own skin and know that we are still beautiful no matter what.

The Vaccine Cart

image

Anurudh Ganesan, a 16 year old boy from Clarksburg, Maryland. Although, Anurudh is not originally from Clarksburg, Maryland, he grew up in a small southern Village in India. Anurudh got very sick and there family had to travel ten miles to a smaller village was so that he could get a vaccine. Upon arrival Anurudh could not take the medicine because it had gone bad for lack of regeneration. Anurudh got lucky that day and there are 1.5 million children worldwide that die every year from diseases that could have been prevented.

So, this is when Anurudh had decided to come up with a product called Vaxxwagon. While trucks and airplanes are reliable with refrigerators they cant get the the vaccines to the remote villages so he came up with a cart that has a refrigerator on it with the wheels generating the energy for it.  The prototype Vaxxwagon stays cold for four hours after six hours of pulling the cart at eight to ten miles per hour, and Ganesan is working on an efficiency upgrade to get twenty-two hours of refrigeration from only two hours of work. The product comes at an affordable price of just less than a hundred dollars.

The 17 Year old Inventor of a Cheaper Lung Diagnostics System

Maya Varma is a 17 year old girl from San Jose, California that invented a app that makes it cheaper way to run diagnostics on the human lung. Prior to her invention there was a method to do the same thing but it costs hundreds of dollars to run. So, this is when Maya found a new and cheaper way to solve this problem for only $35.  The app is used to calculate several key measures of lung capacity and flow rate. Along with basic patient information, these measures allow Varma’s system to diagnose COPD, asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and restrictive lung disease with remarkable accuracy. The Spirometer Varma’s system uses a 3D-printed Lilly pneumotachometer, a spirometer that calculates flow by measuring the pressure change across a mesh when you blow into it.
