Get “Illuminated”

Calloway Cook is a young Entrepreneur who is taking a major step in the supplements market. He was frustrated that the supplement market was lacking an answer for solid healthy supplements. He was working out and taking supplements, but did not really know what he was putting in his body.  He saw some positive effects of the supplements, but did not know the long term effects of some of the ingredients. Just by talking to other people in the market, he realized there was no answer for an openly, honest supplement.

He realized people would be willing to pay a high price to know what they are consuming. The market is shifting to a place where it is willing to spend more to eat better. There has been a health movement with the spread of information. Calvin Cook wanted to enter that market and find a solution he can even use himself.

He created Illuminate labs. Illuminate labs. Illuminate labs are very open about what is in their products. They say that there are no supplement standards in the United States. That is why Illuminate Labs meets the European Union’s standards. The European union’s standards tend to be the highest in the world in this market. On his LinkdIn he just posted that their website had over two hundred thousand hits this last month. They had over one million users in general last year. Their supplements are starting to build a consistent user base.

I think the main thing you can learn from this example is that you do not have to look past yourself for a product. Just examine what problems you have in your life. Your product do not have to solve everything for everyone. It can just be a problem you face, because most likely other people face the same issue.

Rich Rafferty – Flight Entrepreneur

Rich Rafferty is a young flight instructor at High Flight Academy in Butler, PA. Although he is an outstanding instructor, he is not limited to that role. Rich is an entrepreneur in the world of Aeronautics. He produces quality social media content on a daily basis, using Tik Tok, Youtube, and Instagram as his main platforms. His content is focused on helping flight students accomplish their goals, learn at a faster rate, and improve their lifestyle. Rich has grown to about 50,000 followers across platforms, and shows no signs of deceleration.

Not only does Rich Rafferty produce social media content, he also has started his own business called Aviator Accelerator. The mission of Aviator Accelerator is to help aviator’s improve through mentoring. The goal is to help each aviator improve themselves inside and outside the airplane. The process allows for students to “get through flight training easier, faster, and with more money in your pocket than you would elsewhere.” Rafferty is also a Mastermind Facilitator, through L3 Leadership, where he leads a group of young leaders and takes their leadership to the next level.

Rich’s passion for leadership and success is truly admirable. He is a motivated individual that will not stop innovating and building upon his strong foundations. He has already accomplished so many entrepreneurial feats in such a short period of time. It is amazing to think about all the success that will come in the future. Rich dedicates most of his success to a mental toughness challenge called 75 Hard. 75 Hard is a challenge that develops immense mental discipline, requiring the completion of  a number tasks every single day for 75 days straight. Personally, as someone who has also completed the 75 Hard challenge, I can attest to the fact that it is not an easy task but the rewards are well worth the hard work! The challenges include 2 workouts, 10 pages of a book, a gallon of water, a diet of your choice (no cheat meals), no alcohol, and a progress picture every single day. Not only did Rich complete 75 Hard, but he did the entire Live Hard program, that extends for the rest of the year. While doing all of this he built the beginning of his entrepreneurial empire.

Lasso Gear

Lasso Gear is an athletic apparel company based in Los Angeles, California that specializes in performance socks. Lasso Gear implements scientific research with personal experience to present socks that mimic the technology of ankle taping and ankle braces to provide faster, more easily accessible heightened performance and increased recover. Lasso Gear was started by a young entrepreneur named Partha Unnava, a friend of mine, who had a serious ankle injury playing basketball in his youth. Partha was frustrated with the limited options of recover for his injury so he used his background in biomedical engineering to a create a visually elegant sock that provided very similar benefits to ankle taping or braces. I have spoken to Partha several times during at my previous job, and he has described his upbringing and key points to being successful as a young entrepreneur. The two points that stood out to me the most was the importance of being unique in a very competitive space and implementing one’s own story or background into their product. Partha described the intensive research and trial and error he partook in to finalize his product especially in an extremely competitive space such as sportswear. Partha stresses the need to stick out in one way or another in order to gain any sort of competitive advantage especially as a small business. Furthermore, implementing one’s own life story, upbringing, background, etc. can be used to bring a unique aspect to a product or service. People tend to gravitate towards a product if the meaning behind it is well produced and presents heightened value.

Tehzeeb Lalani by Anna Ortiz

Tehzeeb Lalani, a young entrepreneur based in Mumbai, India, seeks to heal peoples’ relationship with food. She owns the company Scale Beyond Scale, a Mumbai-based company that consults clients on nutrition. Scale Beyond Scale is designed to help clients move beyond mindsets of short-term weight loss goals and on to mindsets of wholistic and long-term health. Lalani seeks to teach people to design behaviors that they can keep for a lifetime. Working with clients including those with health concerns such as diabetes and heart disease, Scale Beyond Scale is equipped to help people look at issues other than weight loss. She calls the movement toward wholistic health” more sanity, less vanity!” Lalani believes that two strategies for success in implementing ideas are setting deadlines and having a partner for accountability. “Telling people about the idea and that you will bring it to life in a few weeks/few months is also a great way to ensure you hold yourself accountable,” she says for an interview with ideamensch. She is also fond of her morning routines, which include meditation, breakfast, an hour of work, and a yoga class. She says that because she lacks control over the rest of her day, her morning is important for her to feel centered and grounded; she can then tackle anything that comes her way next. I think Tehzeeb Lalani conducts herself with thoughtfulness in both her personal context, with her morning routine, and professional context, in her field that prioritizes psychology. People would do well to slow their lives, think hard, work hard, and take care of themselves as Lalani does.

Have you seen these shoes?

Have you seen these shoes?

These are BANGS Shoes, created by Hanna Davis. After teaching in China, she noticed the green canvas work shoes worn by locals and was inspired to create change. She came up with the idea to use shoes to help workers provide for their families and build self-sufficiency in other countries. Backed by her family, she was able to invest in an initial shipment. She had a website, business cards, and a model. She paid the manufacturing fee and was delivered no product.  As she started over and began to save again, she worked as a bartender. One night she struck up a conversation with an elderly couple who took an interest in her. They began to ask her about herself, and Hanna began to grow uneasy at the targeted questions, not wanting to disclose the specifics. She took down their information and later that week, decided to look him up. The man turned out to be a retired VF executive. VF is a corporation that owns outdoor adventure and apparel companies such as Vans, Supreme, The North Face, Jansport Dickies, and more. Two months later, George and Gayle Darrah become signed investors and business partners.

Super Coffee: Changing the way you drink coffee

Super Coffee, a company created in order to deliver a more health conscious, natural energy packed coffee drink with various, delicious flavors to choose from. Brittany Canty: Co-founder of Comfort Eats

Brittany Canty is the co-founder of a brand called Comfort Eats. This business idea came about when she was visiting her best friend and co-founder, Reina in New Zealand. When Brittany visited, she came with her suitcase full of snacks from back home that her friend had missed so much. The joy that it brought her friend made them think- how can we ship comfort food to people that can’t find these foods where they live?

Brittany Canty

This is exactly what Comfort Eats does. Brittany and Reina have an online shop where people can have their favorite American snacks shipped to them while in a different country. They said they have seen people from other cultures become interested in their business too, not just Americans who are traveling. Brittany says her past experience as a product manager has given her lots of experience with their business. She tries to set one goal to accomplish a day, giving her freedom while also getting something important accomplished for the business.

Brittany says that she would give her younger self the advice of “trust your gut!”. She explains the world has a way of putting insecurities on young people and making them triple check everything. Her and her friend started this business as young entrepreneurs and they succeeded by being passionate in this one area.

Brittany says that listening to their customers is most important in running Comfort Eats. Their voice is most important in getting the right food delivered that will bring joy in so many ways. Brittany and Reina will continue to grow their business, reaching many people who miss the taste of their hometowns.

Alex Bond and Fresh Check

Fresh Check is an example of entrepreneurship that comes to us from the UK – where one of its cofounders Alex Bond makes his home. Fresh Check is a company that ultimately aims to reduce both the amount of food that is wasted in the world, and also to keep consumers healthy by avoiding foods that may be contaminated or outdated. Their product is a spray – one that when sprayed on packaging used to store food changes color depending on whether or not the sprayed area is contaminated. If the food is safe to eat, the sprayed area turns blue, but if the food is not safe to eat, the color turns to orange. Originally this product was made to be used on food packaging specifically, but the company has since made it an adaptable product that can also be used in restaurants and hospitals.

I found the thought process behind Fresh Check was very helpful and practical. The founders started with a problem (an awareness of the dangers of poor hygiene in food packaging), and then decided to search for a solution by taking their area of expertise and seeing how the knowledge that they already had could be applied. As the founders were at the time PhD students in Chemical Biology, “a biotech-style solution seemed like the most obvious fit.” They claim that this method of approaching the problem really paid off in the long run for them. The developers at Fresh Check have a vision for the future in mind too, as they plan to release a line of other food hygiene related products.

Teenage Boy Creates Clothing Brand Focusing on Healthy Habits

17 year old Eli Zied has always had an eye for solving problems. After his freshman year in high school, he enrolled in a marketing summer program where he thought of the concepts that later formed Habits 365. The goal of this clothing brand is to challenge its customers to create healthy habits all year round.

He began by creating designs for logos and an Instagram page to spread awareness of his brand. His older brother even joined the business as COO. A big problem he faced in the early stages of his business was gaining brand exposure. He faced this challenge by reaching out to athletes, musicians, agents, trainers, dancers, and comedians by offering them free merchandise in exchange for a photo or a post. With the help of these influencers, he went from having a couple hundred Instagram follower to over 80,000. Zied has even become close with several NFL and NBA athletes who are prime example of setting healthy habits year round. Habits 365 has become very successful and turns over $55,000 each year.

With all of this going on, he still manages to maintain good grades. He credits this to setting his own healthy habits each day and setting aside time for both his business and schoolwork.

Zied believes that Habits 365 will become one of the biggest streetwear brands in the world eventually because of how relatable their message and vision is.

Your Super- A company that changed the idea of healthy eating.

Your Super is a health based company that aims to promote healthier eating by providing essential vitamins and supplements into their products in a quick in easy to use manner. Your super was created by a young couple who each have a unique story to tell. Michael, the husband, relates his story to his days as a professional tennis player as well as dealing with cancer at a young age of 24. Through his journey will illness, Michael found that food is truly the “fuel” for your body. This clarifies the phrase, “You are what you eat”, and he found this to be very evident in his life.

Kristel, Michael’s wife and co-founder of the company, would share her unique, homemade powders with him. He found that these supplements and powders made him feel happier, more energized, and healthier all together. The effects and impact of a healthy diet became even more evident in Michael’s athletics as well as his daily life all together. because of this. Michael then hopes to share the importance of good nutrition, by selling and promoting Your Super.

Kristel, Michael’s wife, was another important aspect of the company. Having actually met Michael while on the court, she herself has a profession in tennis as well. She found at a young age, that superfoods are essential to a healthy curing lifestyle. From flaxseeds, wheatgrass, chia seeds, maca, spirulina, and many others, these nutrients are just what the body needs. She wanted a quick and easy way for people to incorporate these nutrients into their everyday lives. So they created mixes and powders containing these nutrients in which people can blend into smoothies, add to their meals, make into a latte, or even just mix simply with water.

They stand by the phrase, “Small changes can make all the difference”, and it was very evident in their lives!
