Sprout and Lentil: The business which expanded during the pandemic

Sprout and Lentil is the only mom-and-pop vegan cafe on Aquidneck Island. Founded in 2019 by the husband and wife team of Carmen Foy and Matt Sole, Sprout and Lentil has grown from being a booth at a farmers’ market to having its own independent retail business located in the center of Middletown, RI. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Foy – who was born in Spain – trained at the Cordon Bleu in France and then worked for twelve years as a chef aboard yachts.

Foy and Sole have stayed true to their business mantra of “Food with a Mission” by serving only plant-based foods. For instance, Foy ordered granola and then returned it to the producer it contained honey. She and her husband are dedicated to a purely vegan business. Additionally, the owners have created a special niche serving their community for people who are vegan, vegetarians, and kosher. Foy and Sole know their target customers very well and have seen that there is a high demand for quality vegan products. Some may ask, “Who would ever want to pay for a $16 burger?” or “Why isn’t the 50 cent spicy ketchup included with my fries?” Without doubt, the prices are high and sauces are not included with fries, burgers, nor cauliflower nuggets. A gourmet truffle oil dressing retails for eleven dollars. Perhaps it is hard to believe here in western Pennsylvania, but their local customers – hard core vegan regulars, and tourists – do buy and enjoy the expensive truffle oil dressing as well as the $16 burgers. The customers believe that the high prices are worth the money for what they receive. Foy and Sole have created a demand for specialty vegan food.

Cristin Smith, Saffron & Sage

Saffron and Sage, a holistic health club, was created by Cristin Smith. Before her journey into healthcare, Smith used entrepreneurial skills in the non-profit sector working with companies and entrepreneurs to enhance their businesses by connecting then to their target market. She also worked in the finance and insurance world in the beginning of her career. However, what really led her to starting and working on her own company was an unexpected health issue. She was told after visiting with several doctors that her condition could require surgery and life-long medication. But she was determined to do her part by researching and making changes in her lifestyle. She worked to seek out holistic health care providers and more natural ways of living.

After traveling for so long to several different specialists and treatments, Smith asked herself, why isn’t there a single destination for these treatments, and one that won’t drain my bank account? Smith decided that if there wasn’t one available for her, she would make one. That idea from 2013 has now been transformed into a thriving wellness center which holds a multitude of classes and treatments for people. This includes sound therapy, botanical medicine, breathwork, meditation, and the list goes on.

In a blog post on Saffron and Sage’s website, Smith discusses her daily schedule, her creative process, what makes her the best entrepreneur she can be, etc. Then she explains her biggest tip for other entrepreneurs, look for amazing people and create an amazing support/business team.

Beyond the unique health services and education that Saffron and Sage provides for people, I am especially impressed by the website and the online services that Saffron and Sage provide. Even if you do not live in the San Diego area, you can still get access to their online classes and some services through zoom. Another option for people who don’t have the money to sign up for their online services is the company’s blog. After scrolling through, you can see a huge amount of health and wellness information that is completely free!

Smith is a true entrepreneur, and it is shown through her persistence in finding a solution to the health issues that so many have unanswered questions about. Her approach of holistic health and natural medicine is such a prevalent topic in our society right now, where people are getting sick but cannot find help.

A Glimpse of Brian Montgomery, Canadian Food Entrepreneur

How can people think entrepreneurially about something as basic as oats?

Brian Montgomery provides an engaging case study. A former investor, Montgomery wanted to develop a business where a simple product like oats and oatmeal can be turned into a new and truly creative lifestyle food. Oat Couture, his business from Ottawa Canada, provides millennials (as well as the local community) with a new and improved way of breakfast oatmeal. His message to his millennial target audience for Oat Couture is, “We want everyone to feel like they are coming home.” His message beautifully conveys his spirit of hospitality.

Not only does his cafe have a sit-down area, but he also offers online order and delivery options for young professionals who may be too busy to sit and eat. His kitchen accommodates many allergens and dietary needs; the meal presentation is also aesthetically pleasing. For example, he offers savory, sweet, and ultra-health conscious oatmeal bowls as well as seasonally flavored varieties. Currently, his fall specialty is pumpkin, which he makes distinctive with adding house-made caramel shortbread.

Clearly, Montgomery has a vision for his café; but his novel idea of making oatmeal fashionable is not his only innovation. He has pioneered the multi-purposing of café space. At night, one of his locations within sixty minutes is reconfigured as the Montgomery Scotch Lounge, a nod to his Scots pioneer heritage. This whole other business builds on the same theme of Scottish agricultural heritage but reaches another consumer market that may not be preoccupied with health, but instead prizes upmarket whiskey brands.

Brian Montgomery is an extraordinary entrepreneur, who can read his market and find innovating ways to use space and classic ingredients.

Fit + Faith

Fit+Faith International - Christian Women Getting Healthy & Honoring GodThroughout this semester in ENTR 101, Dr. Sweet has talked about the different ways to integrate our faith into what we are passionate about.  Whether it’s sports, music, art, etc., there are plenty of ways to combine the Christian faith with a business.  Dr. Melody is an inspiring young entrepreneur who did just that.  Originally, Dr. Melody was a doctor of physical therapy and then acquired skills in coaching and mentoring as a health and life coach.  She was inspired to combine these skills with her passion for her faith to encourage physical, mental, and spiritual health.  About - Fit+Faith International

From this inspiration, Dr. Melody founded Fit + Faith International.  The mission of this organization is to “empower and equip God’s Daughters in growing in their health, faith and life to blossom into who He created them to be.”  Dr. Melody saw herself struggling with prioritizing physical health in the busyness of life and wanted to help herself as well as other women.  She is passionate about encouraging women in a way that is helpful, biblical, and loving.

Her organization offers several different services and tips for healthy living. Dr. Melody runs a podcast called, “The Healthy Christian Women Podcast.”  Additionally, she has spoken at different events and holds a Breakthrough program.  There are also meal and exercise plans posted on her website.

I think that this is a really unique way to combine talents with passion!  Dr. Melody is clearly a qualified individual who genuinely wants to encourage women to be the best versions of themselves.  Also, Fit + Faith has a blog that really dives into the tough, difficult topics.  Dr. Melody talks about how to be truly healthy – not just working for an “ideal” body.  I really appreciate the inclusivity of this organization, and I think that its mission to encourage women in truth and love is really great.

Makin Bacon Baby!

After Selling Millions, Family-Run Makin Bacon Battles Amazon CounterfeitersOne morning in 1993 an 8-year-old girl named Abbey Fleck and her dad were cooking bacon for breakfast. as she saw her dad’s struggle with all the bacon fat juice and cleaning it up with paper toils, she thought of an idea. What if there was a way to cook the bacon hanging as a dish of some sort collects the fat? That’s when Abbey and her father began to design what would eventually become the Makin’ Bacon dish. It’s a square, inch-deep skillet made of microwave-safe plastic. It has 3 T-shaped supports rising up from its center. The bacon cooks while draped over the crossbars of the central supports and the fat drips down into the dish.
Abbey’s solution and invention were not only an easier and healthier way to cook the bacon but it was also an inexpensive way. The dish itself only cost 7$. Knowing they had an amazing product Abbey and her father founded the company, A. de F. Ltd., and began selling Makin Bacon the next year. (1994) Since then the product has gotten tons of promotion from “Good Housekeeping” and they even negotiated a deal with Amour for the Makin Bacons packaging in the same year of release. Abbey even made a personal appearance on “The Late Night Show with David Letterman” and on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”.
Abbey has gained a lot of entrepreneurial experience since then. She settled a patent infringement suit against a company in Pennsylvania that had begun to sell a similar product of hers. She acquired a patent for her “microwave cooking machine” in 1996. Still only 11 years old at this point.
Today the Abbey Fleck’s Makin Bacon is available on Amazon and at Walmart. She got the offer from Wallmart to distribute her product fairly soon after her release.

She is an inspiration to fathers and daughters out there that can work together to create something great. Even at that young age to she had a natural knack for business and entrepreneurship. Thanks to her bacon is better!

Gabe Blanchet and Grover Labs

https://www.digitalfoodlab.com/en/foodtech-database/grove-labs

Gabe Blanchet is the co-founder of the grove ecosystem which is a device that allows you to grown plants inside in a way that also decorates your house. Gabe designed this while finishing school at MIT. His inspiration for this was to allow for people to be able to have a garden no matter where they live. Gabe looked into the idea that certain areas can only grow crops for a certain duration of the year, however people in those areas still want to have gardens. So, Gabe decided to construct an indoor garden for himself. After collaborating with fellow students, he found that this idea could be profitable. Although after talking with people he found that his idea needs to be more appealing to people to want them to put it into their homes. After much redesign, Gabe and his fellow students were able to make a fashionable design to put into your home and from there Grove Labs was created.

Gabe took the idea of gardening and found a problem that people in certain areas had and was able to create a product to meet those needs. Along with just solving the problem and using the left side of his brain after talking with fellow students, he found that the idea does not only need to perform but be appealing to the customers more. Here we see Gabe had to exercise the right side of his brain and open up to the idea of interior designing and allowing a product not only to function but to look the part as well. I find Gabe inspirational because he has shown that in the world today to be innovative you cannot just have something that works it needs to work and appeal to customers. He shows how a young entrepreneur needs to be able to adapt and learn new things to allow his idea to grow and flourish.

Habits365

Most high-school seniors tend to worry more about their college decision and finishing out their high school career strong.  However, if your name is Eli Zied you are more worried about managing life as a high schooler on top of running your constantly growing apparel business.  At the age of 17 Eli started Habits365 which is a lifestyle apparel company built on the principle of encouraging good habits.  His entrepreneurial and business genes stretch much further back.  At the age of 12 he started reselling expensive sneakers to make some extra money and he quickly fell in love with fashion and apparel.  As he fell in love with shoes he got into fashion and began to closely follow all the biggest fashion brands.  Following these brands closely gave him an eye for style and what people were looking for.  Eli surrounded himself with entrepreneurial minds and learned the ins and outs of the industry.  Five years later he started his own brand and was able to apply all the knowledge he gained selling shoes to Habits365.

While reading about Eli I noticed a few traits that are common among entrepreneurs and some that were unique to him as an individual.  The common traits he possesses are innovation, desire, ability to identify problems, and willingness to take risks.  Starting an apparel brand in a saturated apparel market is extremely difficult but Eli possessed the necessary traits to not accept failure.  Eli also has a few traits that make him unique.  He possesses a deep desire to help other people and promote living a positive lifestyle.  He did not start Habits365 because he wanted to make money and be rich.  He started it to provide cool apparel that promotes people being the best version of themselves.  He wants to help other people succeed by making clothing that gives them confidence.  Eli started a commercial enterprise with clear social value.

Omari McQueen – Dipalicious

At the young age of eight, Omari McQueen started his own dip and cooking business that stemmed from his original passion for cooking.

When he was seven, Omari’s mother became ill with migraines, so his father, who worked long evening hours, decided to teach him how to cook to help with meals. Even before his mother’s illness, Omari already had a passion for cooking and was excited to learn more. His passion grew stronger as he began creating his own versions of meals for his family to enjoy.

Continuing to pursue his passions, Omari discovered veganism after coming across a YouTube video about vegan pizza and was extremely intrigued. He was determined to learn more about vegan foods and decided to become vegan himself to teach other children about what they could eat as well. With this, Omari began his own YouTube channel where he filmed himself making his very own vegan pizza. He felt that the pizza was too dry, so he invented his own vegan dip to go along with it!

The first dip, the Caribbean Kick, allowed Omari to start his business at eight years old, Dipalicious. Now he sells a wide selection of vegan dips, snacks, juice packs, and seasoning. Omari is also saving up to turn an old bus into a small restaurant and create pre-prepared vegan meals for children.

Omari McQueen is a great example of a young entrepreneur. He started with his passion for cooking, found a problem with dry vegan pizza, and mashed the two together to create Dipalicious. Starting a business at eight years old is truly inspiring and really makes me think, “Wow, if Omari can do it so can I!”

Along with his business success, Omari is youngest award-winning vegan chef in the UK. He has won the TruLittle Award, the Compassionate Kids Award, and the Proud and Gifted Award for being a both a vegan chef and youth empowerment speaker encouraging other children to become entrepreneurs.

Rent The Chicken

Chicken renting – excuse me?

Jenn and Phil Tompkins founded Rent The Chicken three years ago, due to an identified need for fresh eggs in peoples’ personal backyards. The idea seems absurd, but Rent the Chicken is now a nationwide venture with 40 affiliate farms and even locations in parts of Canada. According to customers as well as the founders, the difference between fresh eggs and store-bought eggs is incomparable.

The idea came to Jenn and Phil simply based off of a search for crazy business ideas. Their crazy search has created what now gives each customer a coop, four hens, all the feed, all the supplies, and full support from Jenn and Phil throughout a typical six-month adventure. Jenn and Phil like to say, “yard to table.”

Since starting the business three years ago, Rent The Chicken now have 10 rental families who also have their Hatch The Chicken program, which takes three weeks for the eggs to hatch and another two weeks to care for the baby chicks. Rental families are provided with the essentials – incubator, fertilized eggs, book, cage, feed, water dish, feed dish – and then chickens begin laying their own eggs around six months.

More often than not, rental families become attached to their chickens and they become pets. Because Phil and Jenn understand the attachment that can take place, they do offer the option for renters to adopt their own chickens.

Certainly unique and original – that’s what this is.
