Go Out with a Bang

In 2014, 22-year-old Hannah Davis sat at a table in Charlestown, North Carolina at a pop-up shop. Surrounded by small business owners, Davis hardly felt at home. She had only ever held two jobs–waitress, and English teacher and didn’t know the first thing about starting a business. What’s more, she hardly had any expertise in her product—shoes.

Today, BANGS shoes have lighted up Instagram with aesthetic pictures of one-of-a-kind footwear. In a culture where many Gen-Zers wear one of three shoe brands (Vans, Converse, Nike), Davis saw a market for uniqueness and self-expression. With their wide variety of colors, cute embroidered patterns, and a style reminiscent of the 70s, BANGS shoes stand out from the crowd.

BANGS shoes aren’t all about style. They strive to remain sustainable towards an increasingly environmentally conscious generation with 100% vegan materials. In addition, BANGS invests 20% of its net profits toward entrepreneurs through a non-profit platform called Kiva. They have invested in over 5,000 entrepreneurs across 74 countries including the United States. Unlike larger brands, BANGS’ small nature allows them to plug in with their customers through social media and events. Through social media contests, tags, and scavenger hunts BANGS reaches its audience in unique ways. BANGS ambassadors also host regional get-togethers for fellow brand enthusiasts to come together for crafts, games, and meet and greets.

Hannah Davis was first inspired to start BANGS when she was teaching English in China. After seeing the green, army-style shoes worn by Chinese migrant workers and farmers, she wanted to create a shoe that represented a community. The name BANGS is from the Mandarin character 帮: bāng, or “to help”. Davis is driven by making the world a better place by nurturing a positive community and being kind towards others. Her innovation through the unique style and mission of BANGS as well as her perseverance in breaking into a market she had little knowledge of demonstrates her entrepreneurial spirit. Davis’ uncommon and expressive approach to both her product and her marketing strategy is an inspiration to entrepreneurs.

Carew Ellington – Social Media Influencer

Carew Ellington first started getting followers and seeing fame when he created a Tik Tok account. Through his Tik Tok account he would create videos about his Christian apparel that he was selling and making out of his basement. His apparel is Christian based, and he mainly got his sellers through sharing his testimony and videos he would make about bible verses and sometimes little sermons. His main point he wants his consumers to know is that everyone is loved by God, and he carries that over into his apparel. Once he got more famous, he also started selling his clothes that he doesn’t want any more on his website. He has Hand-made apparel and Christian Collection. Carew’s clothing is unique because he has apparel that is hand-made by him. Making sure everyone knows they are worthy and loved by God is what drives him to make and create his shirts, sweatshirts, and tote bags. Carew demonstrates passion in his clothing line because he is passionate about sharing the gospel and extending God’s love to others through his apparel and social media videos. Social media has made things so much easier for young entrepreneurs because it is such a great way to get your product out there and see who grasps onto it

Jimmy Donaldson – MrBeast

MrBeast (@MrBeast) / Twitter

Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, is an American businessman and philanthropist who has one of the most subscribed YouTube channels of all time. MrBeast is best known for making insane and often expensive challenges for other people to participate in to win big cash prizes. He is motivated by more than just one reason. In an interview, he said, “I’m motivated because I want to support my mom and my family. I am motivated because I want to employ my friends and help them. I am motivated because I want to be a YouTuber.” He has the desire to help others and has been helping others by donating so much money in many of his videos.

His idea is great because he is entertaining people while giving to others simultaneously. MrBeast demonstrates the entrepreneurial traits of experimentation and improvement. He wants to make the best videos on YouTube and make sure that each one is better than the last. How are they innovating? Aside from YouTube, his other ventures include a mobile game, Finger on the App, his own fast food restaurant chain, MrBeast Burger, and his own line of chocolate bars, Feastables. He has also exercised his philanthropy by partnering with Team Trees and Team Seas and inventing his own platform, Beast Philanthropy.

MrBeast inspires me to invest in others, to make sure that I am providing a quality service for them and helping them out as God commands us to. He reminds me that it is important to have fun with what you are doing and make it fun for other people. It makes others more invested in what you’re selling.

Destiny Snow

Destiny Snow is a very successful young entrepreneur who owns the business called SnowGlam collection. This is an online company that sells beauty products to women. One thing that stood out to me was how she handled the COVID situation regarding her business. Constantly being stuck at home made her realize that she needed to focus on growing her company. She did this by the help of a social media influencer named Ari Fletcher. She tagged her on her Instagram story, and Destiny instantly saw how big of an impact that had on her business. She said her phone started blowing up with orders as soon as Ari posted on her story and that was the spark her business needed. I thought this was a very clever of way of getting exposure. It was pretty much genius as it immediately reached her target marker which are primarily teenage girls who love to shop. Another thing that I found really impressive was the number of sales she had for her online business. It was an astounding amount of over one million dollars over the course of two years. If Destiny keeps working the way she is and utilizing social media, I think she still has more room for growth and expansion. The most inspiring part of this story was how she used COVID to help strive her business to where she is at today. Instead of letting the pandemic hold her business back, she optimized this as an opportunity to really focus on social media as her main way of connecting to her customers.

How Success Happened for Destiny Snow, CEO of SnowGlam Collection

Luke Economou – Madman Los Angeles

Luke Economou is a Greek/American young entrepreneur who goes to UC Santa Barbara. Luke was born in Connecticut but has lived around half of his life in Santa Monica, California, before moving to Santa Barbara this past year for school. I consider Luke to be one of my closest friends from back home as we have known each other for almost 10 years now (ever since he moved to Los Angeles) and have built a brother-like relationship. Luke has always had a passion for fashion and is one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial-minded individuals I have met. Similar to me, Luke graduated high school right after the COVID pandemic hit in 2020. He was originally planning to attend UCSB right away but instead decided to attend a local community college online. It was during this time that he started his designer/streetwear brand, Madman. Luke’s vision with Madman is to provide extremely stylish and luxury clothing that blends the culture of Los Angeles with our inner “madman.” The moto for his brand is, “What’s done in the dark, must come to light.” Luke wanted to establish a culture around his brand so that when people acquired his fashion pieces, they became part of the Madman family. Luke has been selling his product mostly through his online store, https://madmanlosangeles.com/, but has also initiated multiple pop-up stores in various locations around Los Angeles. Most notably, Luke held pop-up stores and events several times in the renowned shopping mall, The Beverly Center, at the Lost Warhol’s concept store. Madman was featured on the Beverly Center’s main attraction screen and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback on his brand’s design, message, culture, comfortability, uniqueness, and much more.

Dustin Williams – Photography to Fabrics

Dustin Williams, a Mississippi boy with love for cars, moved with all he had to Southern California after graduating high school. He moved into a friend’s house; all he had was a Subaru WRX and a camera. He began making money through photography by working at a high-end car dealership and doing weddings. He also had a YouTube channel that began seeing some success. As he grew his photography business, Legends Media, he made his own shirts and wore them in his YouTube videos. His audience enjoyed his sense of style and his brand and encouraged him to begin selling apparel, which he then did. His brand, Legends Media, saw very early success among his fans and quickly grew. Today, he does monthly drops based on his life and YouTube channel as well as a subscription for monthly t-shirts and other benefits. He now has 675k subscribers on YouTube and continues to grow at a rapid pace.

Dustin has been an entrepreneur from the start! He began making money by doing photography for people and then reinvested that money into what he loved, cars. He then used his cars to provide content for YouTube, and the rest is history. He has inspired me and many others to do what they love and to go the extra step. The motto he carries in his life and shares with others is “Do More.” He encourages his audience to always go the extra mile, because it may pay off in the future. His entrepreneurial mind has inspired so many, including me. His ability to make a living doing what he loves is very inspiring and makes me want to do the same!

Stephanie Conway

Stephanie Conway made a career in brand marketing and events once she graduated from University of Los Angeles. Stephanie worked in public relations for awhile until she quit and started her own marketing virtual assistant business. Circumstances happen in everyone’s life that potentially change the trajectory of their life. Same goes for Stephanie. Stephanie moved back to the UK after a death in the family. She realized later that she thrived much more in the United States. She moved back to the states and continued to thrive. Stephanie had created an impressive resume while working on campaigns with the top influencers and celebrities of the world. Stephanie’s business allows her to life the exact lifestyle that she needs in order to continue to thrive and be successful. I find her lifestyle remarkably interesting. I think that her values of something as simple as the sunrise has made her travel the world more than I can fathom. Stephanie is truly inspiring because of her story as well as how enthusiastic she is about her work. Stephanie is a big advocate for people wanting to become entrepreneurs but who may be too afraid to do so, because of the competition within a space. Stephine believes that people can be innovative and succeed in what they are enthusiastic about. I wonder if Stephanie utilizes her travel to meet new people, network, and build relationships with people or if she purely travels for her enjoyment. I feel like her lifestyle puts her in such a unique position to meet all sorts of influencers and celebrities from around the world.

TJ Hunt – Monetizing Your Hobby

Many YouTubers today can be considered entrepreneurs with the way they use their channel. One of these YouTubers was TJ Hunt. TJ started his channel when he was in high school. He wanted to document his time modifying his first car, a BMW 328i. Modifying his car was just a hobby, but it did not take long for him to realize that he could monetize what he loved. He began making more videos and soon bought a Subaru BRZ, the car that marked TJ’s rise onto the car scene. The more he modified that car, the more his channel grew. As his platform has grown, primarily on YouTube, his car collection has grown. He has owned a lot of cars and sold plenty, but today he still has that BRZ along with 15 more. He has been able to monetize his hobby of cars through YouTube’s monetization and brand partnerships.

TJ has also used his presence on YouTube to start his own clothing brand called Hunt & Company in 2016. As time has progressed, the quality of his products have only improved. I own quite a few products of his myself and you might catch me wearing some. TJ has been able to use content on his channel and a great design team to create quality products that his fans relate to and appreciate. As a result, the Hunt & Company has seen tremendous success and has proven very profitable for TJ. He has been able to hire full-time staff for the company and frequently releases drops for customers to sell out in minutes. TJ has been able to use his influence and platform to create more and make money in the process.

What TJ has shown me is that it is possible to make money doing something you love that most likely would not make money. In fact, his hobby typically spends more than it makes! He has inspired many others to create as well and do what they love. TJ also spreads awareness to mental health. During his journey making YouTube videos, he experienced a rough patch that really put a halt to his plans he had for life. As he worked through it, he told himself to always keep moving forward, and that is the slogan he carries with him from his clothing to the outro of every video. TJ has been able to spread a positive influence on many others and has shown his entrepreneurship spirit through all that he does.

Catch’n Ice Cream

Dylan Lemay began working at Cold Stone Creamery at 15. He began doing tricks with the ice cream, for example, he can toss it behind his back.  He worked there for ten years during high school and college. He grew to having 11.2 million Tik Tok followers and almost 4 million Youtube subscribers by posting his cool ice cream tricks. Dylan’s goal is to create a fun experience and bring back face-to-face service. He opened his own ice cream shop called “Catch’n Serve,” in New York City. Instead of the traditional scooping of ice cream, Dylan makes his ice cream and has it in balls. He then does tricks with the balls of ice cream and then serves it up like normal. This is a totally unique idea of efficiently serving ice cream and minimizing waste. The thing that made him stand out online is the same thing that opened up his life to business. Even though he had no intention of starting a business when he began making TikToks, his popularity in just having fun at work gave him a whole business idea. This really highlights the significance of having an online presence and how social media can help jumpstart a business. Platforms like TikTok can help entrepreneurs get their name around and even give them business ideas based off of their own unique brand and talents. Dylan has also created a fun environment that other ice cream shops don’t have. We can learn from Dylan that you don’t have to have extensive background or skills to create something fun and new, instead he took his background knowledge and made something out of a simple job.

Jimmy Donaldson – The Genius Behind MrBeast

There are few young entrepreneurs as successful as Jimmy Donaldson, the Gen Z behind MrBeast. Jimmy began posting videos on YouTube in 2012 at the age of 13. He began his channel by making Minecraft videos, but soon expanded to different genres. As he continued to make videos, he continued to fall in love with it. As he continued to create, he sought to understand the YouTube algorithm. Soon he began to find success and has since exploded in his brands. Today, he has 18 different YouTube channels along with channels on many other content platforms. On top of those, he has a successful merchandise brand, an international fast-food resturaunt called MrBeast Burger, and a chocolate company called Feastables.

Jimmy’s main YouTube channel has now surpassed 104 million subscribers and continues to grow. What is so special about him and interesting to his business model is that he reinvests almost all income into future ventures. This has found tremendous success as all of his brands continue to grow. He has been able to sustain this growth through his incredible innovation. Jimmy may understand the YouTube algorithm better than any other content creator, and his marketing has created great success for his physical products. He has inspired countless content creators to structure their brands differently and tailor their content to target audiences. It may be obvious through his content, but Jimmy is very driven by money. He appeared on a podcast, Impaulsive, and stated that his goal is to be the first “YouTube billionaire.” His drive is making money and using it to encourage others through this philanthropy. His brands, from products to content, have seen tremendous return on investments and he continues to reinvest his earnings into his assets.

MrBeast has taught me many principles within entrepreneurship. First, he has taught me passion. It is clear in all that he does that he is incredibly passionate about the content he creates and the products he sells. Second, he has taught me creativity. Jimmy is constantly coming up with bigger and better ideas and they always deliver to his viewers. His content is undeniably creative and entertaining and that reflects in his channel statistics. Third, he has taught me to do the impossible. He does not confine himself to what may only be attainable. He goes beyond and pushes the limits of what is feasible.

Jimmy Donaldson has found incredible success through his many ventures, and is only continuing to grow. He is arguably the most successful Gen Z entrepreneur and I am excited to see what he creates next. He is a great model entrepreneur for our generation and his strategies should be learned from. How much bigger can the MrBeast empire get?
