Me and the Bees Lemonade

Mikaila is a young girl who lives in Austin Texas. Her entrepreneurial story begins with an unfortunate interaction she had with a Bee that stung her twice. After getting stung, Mikaila had a very unhealthy fear of Bees and wanted to avoid them at all costs. However, her parents helped Mikaila overcome her fear by teaching her about the vast benefits Bees provide to the world and showing her that much of life depends on the jobs Bee’s accomplish. Mikaila’s perspective about Bees was completely changed, her fear was gone, and she began taking interest in Bees and desired to help support and protect the life of Bees.

This young girl put her creative mind to work and decided to open up her own lemonade stand in her front yard using her grandmother’s lemonade recipe that used honey as a sweetener. After gaining a lot of popularity, Mikaila started growing her business and advertising to different companies and stores. Mikaila has created five different lemonade flavor options, all sweetened with Bees honey, a classic lemonade flavor, passion fruit, prickly pear, very berry, and cherry. Mikaila’s “Me and the Bees Lemonade” website is very colorful and has lots of pictures of her journey as well as an adorable and interesting video that shares her story and her mission with creating her lemonade product. Mikaila’s website also provides consumers with easy access to buy her products and has a map to find the nearest store that sells her lemonade.

Driven by her desire to save the Bees, Mikaila selflessly donates a percentage of her lemonade profits to local and international organizations that are fighting to save the Bees. Mikaila displays a true desire for innovation and shows that she cares a lot about her mission by constantly sharing her story with others. This young girl even wrote and published a book called “Bee Fearless” that talks about her entrepreneur journey. Mikaila’s lemonade products are now found in all 50 states, and she enjoys speaking about her products and mission worldwide at different events. Mikaila’s story proves that when it comes to thinking creatively and starting a business it doesn’t matter how old you are. Her life shows that as long as you have a passion for something and a desire to fight for a change you can use that as motivation and inspiration to start a business. Additionally, Mikaila’s story shows that you can take things that used to disinterest or scare you and turn them into something that can bloom into a successful and innovative business.

Me & the Bees Lemonade: Saving the Honeybees

Perhaps fear can best drive someone towards success. Well, that was the case with young Mikaila Ulmer, whose fear of bees drove her to create a delicious honey and flaxseed lemonade concoction at the age of four. To conquer her fear of the little pollinators, Ulmer took initiative to understand bees and their environment and after looking through a cookbook from her great grandmother, she found her great grandma’s special recipe for flaxseed lemonade. She decided to add a bee-inspired twist to it: honey. What started as a lemonade stand in her front yard and at a few youth entrepreneurial fairs grew into Me & The Bees Lemonade.

The business started to take off when a local pizza shop asked her if they could sell her product. She agreed and in doing so, was forced to start bottling her lemonade. A few years later in 2015, Ulmer took Me & the Bees Lemonade to the TV screen, appearing on Shark Tank. She walked away with $60,000. Me & the Bees Lemonade has, since its beginnings, been sold in 1,500 stores all over America including Whole Foods Market, Kroger, and The Fresh Market, to name a few.

From the beginning, she’s been donating to save the honeybees since they are such an important part of agriculture. Ulmer donates ten percent of her profits to charities that support the honeybees. Furthermore, she has established The Healthy Hive Foundation, a nonprofit that educates people and supports beekeepers and research. Mikaila Ulmer is a great example of not creating something entirely brand new, but something with a brand new twist: honey-sweetened, flaxseed lemonade. Mikaila Ulmer is a great entrepreneur because she saw that something great (her grandma’s lemonade) could, with a little innovation, be made even better.

Jack Bonneau – Jack’s Stands and Marketplaces

Jack Bonneau was eight, he asked his father for a lego deathstar. Jack’s father told him to raise the money himself. It may have seemed crazy for someone to ask an eight year old to raise $400 all by himself, but Jack’s father knew what he was doing, and suggested Jack might start with a lemonade stand. At the Denver farmer’s market, Jack set up his first stand. Within 12 weeks, Jack had raised $900. With his father’s help, Jack set up a website that gave other kids the option to set up their own lemonade stands. But this was just the beginning.

It was sheerly on accident that Jack ended up on the Shark Tank. He was in New York City to see the Tonight Show, and coincidently heard that Shark Tank auditions would take place in Manhattan the next day. Excited about the prospect, Jack showed up bright and early and gave his pitch when it was his turn. He got accepted a few weeks later. His pitch highlighted marketplace building and how other kids would get entrepreneurial experience, and asked for $50,000 for 10% equity. However, the sharks felt that his business needed to grow more, and instead offered $50,000 with 2% interest. Jack accepted.

Jack’s business now offers kids a marketplace where they can sell their products online or through one of his physical locations. As for the lemonade stands, kids and their parents can work shifts to earn money while not having to deal with the hassles and challenges of setting up their own market places.

In addition to his business, Jack had donated to charities and spoke in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. for the annual board of directors meeting event.

Now in his early teens, Jack had taken what he learned about raising and managing funds, and turned it into a thriving business. What makes Jack so inspiring is how he accepted what seemed like a daunting challenge of raising $400. It takes a special mentality to get up and do that instead of just whining about how hard it would be and giving up. Jack story teaches us how facing our giants instead of turning away and refusing to give up is vital to being successful. Hopefully this inspires you to not give in when the challenge before you seems too big to overcome.

“Buy a Bottle… Save a Bee.”

When Mikaila Ulmer was 4, she received a 1940’s cookbook from her grandma that would lead to a multi-million-dollar company in just a few years. One of the recipes was for flaxseed lemonade and Mikaila decided to give it her own twist by adding honey instead of only sugar.  She came up with this idea when she was stung by bees twice in one week and began to research them and their importance. Mikaila then began to sell her lemonade, called Me & the Bees, locally to support organizations protecting honeybees. Since the beginning of her business, she has given 10% of her profits to charities that protect honeybees. In 2015, Mikaila pitched her business on Shark Tank and landed a $60,000 deal with Daymond John, to put toward growing her business. In just a few years, Mikaila’s lemonade now sold in over 1,500 stores and is carried in many major retailers such as Whole Foods and Kroger. Since then, Mikaila has expanded her business to include other honey and beeswax-based product such as lip balm. Mikaila is now 17 and, in addition to her company Me and the Bees, she works with the Health Hive Foundation, “a nonprofit to further help the mission of saving the pollinators.”

Mikaila Ulmer: Founder of “Me & the Bees” Lemonade

Mikaila Ulmer is a 17-year-old girl who started her own lemonade business at a very young age. The business idea started after young Mikaila got stung by a bee and wanted to learn more about bees to overcome her fear of them.  At age 4, she started a business by creating a very small lemonade stand. Very quickly, this turned into the business “Me & the Bees” as a result.

Mikaila is widely successful, at just age 9, she struck an $11 million distribution deal with US supermarket giants Whole Foods Market. Mikaila has also been invited to the White House twice, featured on Good Morning America, NBC News, Forbes Magazine, and Time Magazine for her entrepreneurial success. Mikaila is very busy; she juggles school, her business, and public speaking. The unique thing about her business is that 10% of her brand’s proceeds are donated to bee conservation charities. It is amazing how she used a challenge of hers (getting stung by a bee) to learn more about it and start up a profitable and charitable business.

Mikaila’s lemonade recipe is unique because it comes from her great Grandmother Helen’s flaxseed lemonade. It is fresh-squeezed, and each bottle is made with care. Her family has a huge part in helping her business thrive. As an extension to her business, Mikaila has created a “Bee-to-Z guide” for young entrepreneurs. Here, young entrepreneurs can find inspiration, business tips, and more to make their big ideas come to life. A very inspirational quote from Mikaila reads, “My generation—we’re the future,” Mikaila says. “When we grow up, we’re going to be the people who are the presidents and the leaders of the world. […]  If we start at a young age making a difference, donating back, giving back, when we grow up we can do that on a larger scale.” Mikaila’s business proves that, just like the bees, you are never too small to make a difference.

Mikaila Ulmer – CEO of Saving Bees One Lemonade at a Time

Curiosity is the birthplace of all creation and innovation. Lack of curiosity limits us in what we can achieve. Mikaila Ulmer, a 15-year-old entrepreneur, not only had the curiosity but had the drive and courage to turn her idea into an award-winning, multi-million-dollar company.

The idea of Mikaila’s company, “Me & the Bees Lemonade”, began when she was just 4 years old and got stung by bees twice in one week. Stemming from her anger around getting stung, she was curious as to why bees even existed. She was intrigued to discover truly how much of an impact bees have on the environment. In preparation for some children’s business competitions, she wanted to combine finding a way to help bees not go extinct with her grandma’s lemonade recipe in her business idea. This is how “Me & the Bees Lemonade” was born. She decided to make her own variation to her grandma’s lemonade recipe with honey and donate a percent of profits to “local and international organizations fighting hard to save the honeybees”. Since she started the business, it has shown unbelievable growth and she now is selling her lemonade in multiple major markets and stores.

Although some may think that a lemonade business is mundane and not worth investment, Mikaila clearly proved this wrong. Mikaila’s lemonade business stands out among the rest. How? She has a drive and meaning behind it. She has a clear purpose and vision for her mission as a CEO. She wants to help the environment at the same time as spreading joy by saving the bees and sharing her grandma’s lemonade recipe with the world. Her passion for the cause and her personal tie to the business is what makes Mikaila unique and what makes her idea great. In the social entrepreneurship arena, we can learn from Mikaila. Whether involving the environment, people, technology, etc., entrepreneurs like Mikaila should inspire us to replicate her passion and courage to change the world for the better.

Mikaila also has a desire to share her story of being a social entrepreneur with others, which she does through speaking at events, leading workshops, and participating in social entrepreneurship panels. She clearly values inspiring others in a way that shows them that they can also make a difference if they are willing to take the chance and apply their passion to a cause. Personally, I am inspired by Mikaila’s story because she is the epitome of young entrepreneurs that achieve success by filling a need that makes a difference and that people care about with no fear. Her story reiterates to me the importance of running with a vision. Mikaila says herself, “My generation-we’re the future. When we grow up, we’re going to be the people who are the presidents and the leaders of the world…If we start at a young age making a difference, donating back, giving back, when we grow up, we can do that on a larger scale.” This quote encourages me that even at a young age, we have the opportunity and potential to make the world a better place. If we capture our dreams and transform them into reality, then there is nothing we cannot do.

Saving Bees One Cup at a Time

How many of you when you were young would create lemonade stands with your siblings or friends in the heat of summer? How many of you would make signs, set up tables, and make refreshing lemonade to quench the thirst of people and to make some extra spending money? In neighborhoods still today, children will sell iced cold lemonade to anyone who passes by for about $0.50 a cup. As a child did you ever think that you would run a successful lemonade business that sold lemonade worldwide? Have you ever thought that you could be the CEO of a start up business? Well, let me introduce you to someone who did. Her name is Mikaila Ulmer. Let me share her story. At age 4 she was stung by two bees within a week span. Her great grandma sent her and her family a homemade recipe book and in it was her famous flaxseed lemonade, so Mikaila began selling her great grandma’s famous lemonade recipe to the neighbors in her hometown in Austin. Mikaila’s family at the time encouraged her to begin brainstorming product ideas to promote at the Acton Children’s Business Fair and Austin Lemonade Day. As she began to think, she wanted to incorporate bees into her product. She decided to mix helping bees with her great grandmas lemonade. So, she created lemonade that used honeybee’s honey instead of sugar, and some of the proceeds were donated to foundations who sought to save the bees. Mikaila would proudly declare, “Buy a Bottle…Save a Bee.”  Then Mikaila had the opportunity to go on Shark Tank, and she struck a deal with Daymond John when she was only 11 years old. One is never too young to create and succeed.

At the young age of 4 years old Mikaila experienced not one, but two bee stings within a week. She developed a fear for bees as most children do under the circumstances. She then begun her fascination with bees learning all about them and what they do for the environment. Around this same time her grandmother brought Mikaila’s family the recipe for her famous flaxseed lemonade. Mikaliah thought “what if I can combine my love for these bees with my love for this lemonade?!” That is just what she did. From there she began the process of perfecting her lemonade with the sweet addition and next thing she knew she was on Shark Tank making a deal with Daymond John! With her new partner on her side business started to take off. She began having a much easier time getting into large retailers and even restaurants! An Entrepreneurial Response to COVID Lockdown

Rebecca Cox, a fourteen-year-old from Nova Scotia, has always been an entrepreneur. Throughout her short life she has been finding new markets to target. One example being her rock selling venture in second grade. But she recently faced a large challenge to her entrepreneurial spirit-Coronavirus lockdowns. Like many other entrepreneurs, she knew she had to adapt. With only the supplies at her own home to start her next venture, Rebecca had to be ingenuitive. She quickly noticed an opportunity. The same material for making masks at home can be repurposed to make scrunchies. Rebecca immediately got to work and posted advertisements. She managed to sell 67 scrunchies, making a profit of $200.
In addition to selling scrunchies, Rebecca started another business in the midst of the pandemic- a small summer day camp. Though initially hesitant about the risks of Coronavirus, she noticed a market desire for a small summer day camp. Parents did not want to send children to large, conventional camps because of the virus. But the parents still had to work and were much more comfortable sending children to a smaller camp. Rebecca and her friend made $1000 in their summer camp service. It is worthy to note that the summer camp was no ordinary summer camp. Rebecca even structured the camp around entrepreneurial activities. She helped the small children in the camp make lemonade and cookies to sell at the curb, allowing them to split the profits.

Rebecca, pictured on the right

Throughout the summer, Rebecca also helped her mother make 800 masks to donate. Now that in person school has started, she has received many more orders for scrunchies.
Rebecca is driven to help others. She is an empathetic person that wanted to help parents, children, and medical workers. What is unique about this child is her work ethic. Most children her age would likely be at home playing games during the lockdown. But Rebecca got to work, managing two businesses and making masks for donation.
Rebecca has the important entrepreneurial trait of recognizing pain and finding opportunity. She recognized the pain of the parents when they needed a safe option for their children while they could work. Rebecca is also a great real-life example of innovation through lack of resources, noted by Charles Darwin in the Galapagos Island, in which there was a lot of diversity despite lack of nutrients. Rebecca was limited by the pandemic and only had a few resources to work with. Her recognition of opportunity and ingenuity with simple materials is very impressive and inspiring.

Me & the Bees – Innovated Lemonade

It all began when four-year-old Mikaila Ulmer was stung by a bee twice in only one week. Naturally, she grew scared of bees, only until she realized how useful and crucial they were to the prosperity of human life and health. She learned about the amazing things bees do for our ecosystem. Once she was inspired by the bees, she was determined to somehow raise money to help save them and promote a boisterous population of bees around the globe. Shortly after she was stung she was encouraged by her family to create a product for two children’s business competitions. They were the Acton Children’s Business Fair and the Austin Lemonade Day. That same year she received a cookbook from her Great Granny Helen which inside included a very special homemade flaxseed lemonade recipe. As a young, talented innovator, Mikaila was prompted to think about how she could bring her newfound passion for bees and business together with her Great Granny’s iconic lemonade recipe. A lightbulb went off in her head. She thought up a plan to use honey from bees in a lemonade recipe that made the taste of that famous sweet summer drink more natural and enjoyable for consumers. At that point she began calling her lemonade brand, “Be Sweet Lemonade,” but due to copyright issues, changed it to “Me & the Bees Lemonade.” The goal of Mikaila’s business is to donate a percentage of the profits to local and international organizations that fight for the growth of the honeybee population worldwide. This young-innovator is now a 15-year-old entrepreneur who has grown her small, humble, Austin, Texas ideas into a profitable venture that has grown by over five hundred percent in just ten years. Her success does not stop there, she even appeared on the hit TV Show of entrepreneurs, Shark Tank in 2015, striking an impressive sixty-thousand-dollar investment from the famous shark, Daymond John. Even now “Me & the Bees Lemonade” is flying off the shelves of Whole Foods Market, The Fresh Market, H-E-B, World Market, and many other stores and sales venues across the state of Texas. Today, Mikaila is a known social entrepreneur, author, public speaker, social media presence, and a hard-working high school student. She is determined to grow her business, continue to raise awareness about the importance of bees, and bring delight to lemonade consumers. More than anything, Mikaila wants to teach everybody how to save the bees, and how to promote the prosperity of their kind. She went even further than just “Me & the Bees,” and established The Healthy Hive Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that has the mission to save all bees through educating people of all ages and fields about bees, donating to bee researchers, and protecting the resources bees need to survive and thrive. She serves as an inspiration to young people by influencing them to become social entrepreneurs, just like herself. She turned her dreams into reality through innovation and social entrepreneurship. As always, we need more young women entrepreneurs like Mikaila Ulmer in the world. Take risks, you might just prosper more than you would have ever imagined you could.
