Rare Beauty – Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is famously known for staring on the Disney TV series Wizards of Waverly Place and appeared in other movies. She was also known for being a singer and songwriter with her most popular songs being Same Old Love and Hands to Myself. Now, she is also known as a businesswoman and entrepreneur.

At the age of 29, Gomez decided to launch Rare Beauty, a full collection of makeup, in September 2020. The packaging is feminine yet simple and it is made to be accessible, both in terms of skill and ability. Fans have pointed out that the rounded applicators are designed to be easy for people with arthritis to use. Some of her products include foundation, concealer, blush, highlighter, two different kinds of lipstick, lipliner, brushes, a makeup sponge, and a face mist. She wanted to create products that help people enhance their natural features without altering them. She opened up to reporters while showcasing her Rare Beauty Spring 2022 collection about how her beauty philosophy has changed over the years. She talked about how her past insecurities inspired her to launch a brand that breaks down “unrealistic standards of perfection.”

A major element of Rare Beauty has been its mission to impact, driving discussions around mental health and paving the way for brands and consumers to speak publicly about dealing with pressure, stress, and anxiety. 1 percent of all Rare Beauty sales go to the Rare Impact Fund, the brand’s nonprofit affiliate working to expand mental health awareness and services, specifically in underserved communities.

Personally, I have products from Rare Beauty and will continue to buy from and support her brand because of the story and mission behind it. I have never been into using makeup as a way of completely changing the way I, and I love that she created this brand for the main purpose of enhancing natural features instead of completely altering them like most beauty brands tend to do.

Annie Lawless- Suja Juice

Since the 1980s fitness frenzy, so many people have adored fresh pressed juice. Not only is it a wonderful source of nutrients but it’s delicious too! Many may look at this market and see no need for improvement but Annie Lawless did. Annie co-founded Suja juice in 2012 alongside her 2 partners. Suja is a clean organic fresh pressed juice brand you can find in almost any grocery store in a variety of flavors.

Annies’s story begins with her journey of her health, she has celiacs disease which has had to make her very weary of what food she puts in her body. Throughout her journey with food, she has become an expert in knowing what is and is not okay for her body. And in this journey is when she realized she could make a business out of her findings. Suja prides itself by only putting purely organic fruits and vegetables in their juices. As well as using a specific process called high-pressure processing which “captures all the nutrition in (their) organic produce, keeping them shelf-stable, without preservatives.” Suja has also branched out from juices as well. They also sell a variety of cleanses, wellness shots and powdered greens. Suja has grown rapidly over the years with 18 million dollars in profit its first year of business and now has an estimated 300 million dollar net worth.

Annie however is not only the co-founder of Suja but is also the founder of Lawless beauty, a beauty company that guarantees celiac safe makeup to all its customers. Lawless is sold at all Sephora’s and has rapidly grown in popularity since it was created in 2017. Annie has really set the new standard for safety in not only the arena of food but makeup as well. So next time you’re at the store or wanting to try a new brand of makeup, check out Suja juice and Lawless Beauty!

Zandra Cunningham – Zandra Beauty

When Zandra Cunningham nine, her father wouldn’t let her buy more lip balm because of the harmful skin-damaging chemicals found in it. So Zandra made her own. Almost a year later, in 2010, Zandra launched a brand called Azariah’s Innocence, and at age 10, sold her own lip balm and body shea butter at the local farmer’s market.

As business grew and the brand expanded, Zandra renamed her brand to Zandra Beauty. Her brand still would sell lip balm made with natural ingrediants, but now she would sell more things than lip balm and shea butter, such as make up remover and face washes. As Zandra puts it, the brand motto is “No icky stuff!”

Now at age 21, Zandra has a net worth of $500,000. Her brand has expanded to making over 40 natural skincare products, all of which are not tested on animals. Not only did Zandra win awards such as the Etsy Open Call Golden PO, BE Teenpreneur of the year nominee (2016), and Small Business Administration Youth Entrepreneur of the year (2017), but she has also been featured on talk shows and other channels such as Nickelodeon.

A few words of advice Zandra has given are “be confident” and “networking is key.” The reason why Zandra’s story is inspirational is because of how young she was when she started her business, yet she wasn’t afraid of conquering the world with her skincare products. Zandra’s attitude is part of why she is such a successful entrepreneur. You can’t be afraid to change the world.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner was born in California, 1997. She grew up as the youngest sibling in the hit reality Tv show, Keeping Up with The Kardashians. Although some say she is only successful because of her family’s fame, I argue she just harnessed her families fame to successfully create her own business ventures.  She was named in Time Magazines Most Influential Teens list in 2015. Then in 2016 she launched her most successful brand, Kylie Cosmetics. This makeup brand earned millions of sales just from her kylie lip kit when she was only seventeen. At a young age she fully knew how to use the press to her advantage. She gave just enough information to her fans to create excitement and to get more people interested. So when she finally would post or launch the product, she got everyone so excited for it would sell out in minutes.  She used her social media influence to create a brand that was like no other at the time. Not only was she selling a product, but she was also selling her name and influence.  By 2019 she was in Forbes as the youngest-ever self-made billionaire. In 2022 Kylie Jenner has over 120 brand names trademarked. Additionally she is currently the owner of several businesses including, Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie Skins, Kylie Baby, and Kylie Swim.

Selena Gomez: Rare Beauty

Rare Beauty - Only at Sephora - YouTube

As many of us know Selena as a successful musician and actress, her skills go far beyond the talents seen in her well known movies or songs. Recently, on September 3rd of this year, Selena released her own cosmetics line named, Rare Beauty. As a makeup and skincare enthusiast myself, I was intrigued to read about her new brand. After some research through the Rare Beauty site and watching reviews, it is clear that Selena made a statement with her new line. With the platform that Selena had already had, she was able to spread awareness of Rare Beauty quickly and began selling on the brands site as well as exclusively being sold at Sephora, online and in stores.

When researching more about her new brand, I began to realize several aspects in her mission behind Rare Beauty that prompted me to write about her for the blog post. Her entrepreneurial mindset is very evident in all she does, especially the thinking behind Rare Beauty. Selena is very passionate about her service and commitment to the communities around her. Selena has opened up throughout the years to the media about her health journey including physical and mental health and hopes to continue to use her voice and actions to make an impact on this community. A large part of the mission behind Rare Beauty is that she wants to be able to raise awareness of mental health and provide impoverished communities with the resources needed in this area.  She plans to do this by every sale of Rare Beauty made, one percent will be donated to raise money for a fund that she started called, The Rare Impact Fund. Selena and her team came up with several goals for the brand, one being to raise 100 million dollars to the fund.  The Rare Impact Fund is meant to increase access to mental health services. Not only did Selena start this fund, but also stated a Rare Beauty Mental Health Council. Lots of thought and planning went into the making of Rare Beauty which will foreseeably be a success since Selena’s dedication and commitment has been present since day one. Selena took the opportunity to give back to a cause she was passionate about, alongside her love for beauty, and create a brand around it. Success has already started not even a month into the debut of the line, beyond the products, consumers have also been intrigued to learn more about the story behind the line. A powerful story to empower women to tear down walls and expectations that society and media has placed onto us, specifically the “unattainable physical perfection”.

We are all rare and are all considered beautiful, and Rare Beauty aims to encourage us to find self acceptance in our own skin and know that we are still beautiful no matter what.

Kylie Cosmetics- The Making of a Billionaire

10 Of Kylie Jenner's Best Lipstick Looks - EVER | StellarA billion. It’s a number that seems impossible to picture in our minds. It’s one that counts our population, our galaxy, and it could make up seemingly infinite lifetimes. For most people, this idea of the billion exists only in the hypothetical or in the things beyond this world. So, when someone achieves it, it leaves the world wondering how.
In March of 2019, Kylie Jenner was listed by Forbes Magazine as the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at twenty-one-years old. TV jumpstarted her fame Kylie’s name when she appeared on the reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians when she was just ten years old. Since then, she’s used her name to create her brand. She started with endorsements for beauty companies. In 2013, Kylie had 2 nail polishes named after her as a part of a Kardashian Colors nail polish kit from Nicole by API. In the same year, she and her sister Kendall started a clothing line with Pac Sun and a jewelry line with Pascal Mouawad’s Glamhouse.
In 2015, Kylie decided to create a lipstick line pf her own, which she called the “Kylie Jenner Lip Kit.” Jenner said she took inspiration from her love of make-up tutorials and using makeup to make her lips look fuller. She started selling the lip kits for $29 online and they sold out right away. She created an app for the company and then changed the name to “Kylie Cosmetics” in 2016. Since, she’s started selling at Ulta Beauty, a decision that led her to make $54.5 million in six months. Being one of the most-followed people on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat, social media has been a major medium for promoting her products. It’s the power of social media,” Kylie said on the topic, “I had such a strong reach before I was able to start anything.” In fact, Ulta itself hasn’t done any marketing for the brand, which, the company has said just doesn’t happen. Kylie’s management of her social media pages has really made Kylie Cosmetics.
Part of the success of Kylie’s sales relies on scarcity. The company launches a set amount of products at a time, and each time, they sell out. The company continues to grow as it includes more makeup products, and Forbes magazine estimates that the company is currently worth 900 million dollars. Kylie Jenner is a successful entrepreneur by using her social media to market her brand to makeup users. In conclusion, Kylie truly captures the image of a millennial entrepreneur, using current media to create a brand for herself.
