Man Candles

Hart Main is a thirteen-year-old entrepreneur who one day had an idea to create candles that had manly scents. he stumbled upon this idea when his sister was selling candles that had “girly” scents for a school fundraiser. Hart then went to his parents and told them his idea of candles that he manly scents. His parents thought it was a genius idea and took action on his innovation. It truly wasn’t until he wanted to purchase a $1,500 bike that he reconsidered putting his idea into a reality.  His candle is now handmade by the Beaver Creek Candle Company in Lisbon, Ohio, by a developmentally disabled workforce.

Hart noticed that there was a lack in the candle department where most of the candle’s scents were feminine and wanted to take action on this idea and began innovating. His man candles are both unique and interesting because there really isn’t any candle company that is only devoted to making candles for men. Hart’s name of his product “Man Can” is also innovating and interesting. The candles actually look like they are in a can, so that is also fun. What drove Hart was not only his bike that he wanted, but to provide a candle that men and boys could also buy and use and not have to worry about the girly scents.

Gus Schoenbucher – Gus’s Eats & Treats

Gus Schoenbucher was 14 when his father gave him the idea to sell ice cream out of a boat. It was aluminum, and Gus’s father did the exact same thing 40 years prior. The reason Gus’s business took off but his father’s never did was because of a complaint about Gus not having a food service license. As Gus puts it:

” ‘You know what? I’ll go ahead and get a license,’ and now it’s an official business, and it’s all registered in my name.”

Since then, Gus expanded to selling hot dogs, red hot dogs (for visitors from Maine), chips, and soda. At some point, the manager of Krispy Kreme contacted Gus, so he sells donuts out of his boat too!

Considering that Gus’s business operates out of a single boat on Merrymeeting lake in New Durham, New Hampshire, business is pretty good. Gus drives the boat around the lake and delivers food to hungry customers, as well as transactions on the water. In no time, he upgraded from a dinghy boat to pontoon.

Gus operates his business on a seasonal basis because of school. Even though his business is a summer side hustle, it’s remarkable what cool things can be done with a good idea. Gus’s business is a fine example of kids rising to a challenge without being afraid of failure. Gus could have quit when someone complained about him not having a food service license. He could have chosen to be too lazy to go out and get a permit. He could have been afraid to get the license because he was just a kid and nobody was going to let a kid register a business. But Gus did not take no for an answer. He persevered when most kids his age would have given up, and how has a successful business. Making a successful business doesn’t drop into your lap; you can’t back down because of criticism or fear.

Kenan Pala – Kids4Community

Kenan Pala is the child of two Turkish immigrants (as of 1998) and was only 11 when he got an idea for a business. On a run at the beach with his father, Kenan saw passerbys trying to help a stranded seal. When he was being driven home, Kenan saw a poverty-stricken person asking for help. No one stopped to help. Struck by the comparison, Kenan researched homelessness in his home city San Diego and found it was #4 in the nation for highest homelessness rates. Kenan wanted to do something.

His opportunity arose in 2016 when he and his friends broke the Guiness World Record for the largest cardboard mosaic to raise awareness for local homelessness. Empowered by his success, Kenan created his charity Kids4Community in 2017.

Kids4Community is a charity that seeks to aid the homeless. Volunteers do things such as make meals for shelters and create programs which educate people of all ages about homelessness and the dangers of substance abuse. Kids4Community also aided hurricane and natural disaster victims with hygiene kids, as well as sending 400 low-income elementary school kids backpacks with school supplies. The charity is also responsible for organizing the cleaning of Mission Bay and supplying a local homeless shelter with 2,000 stockings in December 2017.

Due to this, Kenan was named one of the top 10 youth volunteers in the country in 2017 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Additionally, in 2018, the mayor of San Diego named January 23rd “Kenan Pala day.”

On top of his charity and accolades, Kenan is a fantastic runner who is not easily fazed by success. In 2018, he ran in the San Diego Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon, winning the boys 15-17 age division with a mile average of 5:57. Kenan runs a shocking 40-70 miles a week, often waking up at 4:30 AM to get started. Since he loves running, it’s no surprise he would use it to fundraise for his charity. Kenan hosted a 5k event to raise money to a housing program. He hopes to raise money for Kids4Community by running in the future, as well as run for Stanford University. Kenan even hopes that one day he might run in the Olympics in the 5,000 meters.

Moziah Bridges

Moziah Bridges is a young entrepreneur, and his business is called “Mo’s Bows”. He started his business when he was just nine years old. He started it because he wanted a suitable bow tie and didn’t find anyone that he liked so he decided to make his own. This started the creation of his colorful bowties where he would use leftovers from his grandmother’s sewing projects. Ever since he learned how that skill, he mastered it, and it inspired him to start his own business. I was amazed how at that young of an age that he could put his time and dedication towards sewing and making bow ties. While on his site, I thought that his bow ties were very creative and unique, and I also noticed he also did neckties and squares with cool designs. What I found most interesting about the growth of Moziah’s business was that he appeared on shark tank at the age of 11 and actually made a deal with one of the sharks. He was fortunate enough to have Daymond John as a mentor that would guide him to leading a successful business. He was mature enough to realize that there was always room for improvement and listened to all the advice Daymond has given him thus far. In my opinion, this is when his business took the next step, and he has generated over 200,000 dollars with the sales of his ties. I also like how he is never complacent and is always looking to improve. His ultimate goal is to make his business a multimillion-dollar company and I think he can achieve this if he keeps on working the way he is.

Kenan Pala

The young entrepreneur who I found is named Kenan Pala and he created his business called kids4community. This is a non-profit organization that works with charitable organizations that engage children who are five years or older. The purpose of this is to introduce the concept of charitable work to young kids. One thing I found interesting is how he came up with this business idea. He said in an interview that he was on a leisurely run with his dad and had an “aha moment” when he saw people aiding a baby seal who needed help but not homeless people. This sparked his passion for helping people who are in need when he saw that happen. Kenan was also very involved with volunteering for his community but noticed that it was hard to find work to do because of his young age. I thought it was a great idea because it is creating a positive impact on kid’s lives and at the same time is helping the community. This is also beneficial for parents because instead of finding a babysitter and paying money to watch your kid, you can just send them to this, and they will be busy and accounted for. This young man is very inspiring because he was very determined to make this successful. When he encountered problems at the start with having enough volunteers, he just focused on his vision of helping the homeless. His passion outweighed the conflicts he encountered which eventually led to success and growth of the business. The one question that I have is how he can expand this to other states across the country. I hope that he is able to keep his business growing so that he can have a positive impact on kids and the community.

Calloway Cook by Anna Ortiz

Calloway Cook, created Illuminate Labs, a supplement company that posts its pills’ test scores on its website to be viewed by all. Cook recognized the need for a company that is honest and open about the quality of its supplements when he entered the market as a customer seeking such a company. When he found that others had the same concerns about the cleanness and safeness of supplements, he founded Illuminate Labs. He believes that money should not be prioritized as highly as health, and he wishes he had recognized that earlier in life. Starting a different business while in college, Cook failed to create success on his first try. He learned from his experience with that first business, using his found knowledge to create and run Illuminate Labs. Cook highly recommends The Lean Startup by Eric Ries, which seems to correlate with his experience starting a business, failing, and trying again to create a more successful one. One tip that Cook advances is to take a whole day off each week; he says that Sunday is good because business partners are less likely to try to get a hold of you. I find joy in the fact that Cook, though he may or may not be a Christian, believes that what Christians call a “sabbath” is good for mental health. It is not surprising that God knows what is best for humans, since he made them; people are likely to pick up on some knowledge of what is healthy on their own, but God has always known how people function, and He has provided commands and advice that promote health in the Bible. Cook may not call his off-day on Sunday a sabbath, but he has discovered its benefits.

Benelab

Benelab is an alternative search engine that donates all of its ad revenue to charity. Jack Kim founded the non-profit when he was 16, in 2011, after realizing how much money a major search engine, like google, is able to generate. Searching for information is one of the largest markets on the internet and Benelab seeks to tap into that by redirecting funds to help solve issues around the world. Each month, the team (initially consisting of Kim and his schoolmates) selects a new charity to support and sends out a newsletter to keep their users updated. Benelab highlighst how if just 0.0001 percent of the aproximate 4.1 billion web searches each day occurred through the site, it could donate $250,000 a month to non-profit causes.

SAFETRIP

  • Langston Whitlock is another young entrepreneur who started his own business at the age of sixteen. He is taking the tech world by storm as he is the co-founder and CIO of SAFETRIP, which is the world’s first healthcare transportation mobile app and digital platform. With this app, Whitlock’s patented technology can allow users to book non-emergency and emergency medical transport. It also gives the user an option to pay for services using their insurance. Although he is one of the youngest entrepreneurs in this industry, he says he does not let his age deter him from his goals. The one thing he talks about is how he had a good support system because the people around him trusted his skills. The way SAFETRIP was created was that another person named Ja’Nese Jean saw a homeless veteran who didn’t have access to healthcare. Ja’Nese Jean brought on Langston Whitlock because she knew about his skills and talent. This goes to show how good Langston is at coding because SAFETRIP has raised two million dollars in funding. What was inspiring about Langston’s story was how he started to learn coding at the age of 12. He did it by building an anonymous messaging app to contact his absent father. He says that project is what helped guide him toward his greater purpose which is what he is currently doing with SAFETRIP. His message to other people was to always have faith no matter your circumstance because God has a plan for everyone. Although Langston did not come up this idea, I thought it was very impressive to see how talented he was in the tech industry to lead him where he is at today.

Mr. Cory’s Cookies

  • Cory Nieves is one of the youngest entrepreneurs as he started his own business at the age of six. His business is called Mr. Cory’s Cookies  and he makes delicious all-natural flavored cookies and sweet treats. The one thing that stood out to me was how dedicated he was throughout the process. It started with selling hot cocoa then transitioned to making the famous all natural from high quality ingredients cookie. For being that young, I found it very impressive how seriously he took his idea. It sounds like the thing that differentiates his cookies from others is the ingredients that he uses. He expanded his line of cookies to more health-conscious people by including flavors like double dark, oatmeal raisin, and sugar with still more to come. I thought that this was smart because eating cookies and other sweet treats is not a healthy option, but with his cookies, it sounds like a better alternative. One thing that I am curious about is the nutrition facts that is not listed on the website. I would’ve liked to compare his cookies compared to normal ones to see how big of a health difference there actually was. While I was looking at the menu, it says that a portion of the proceeds goes back to the community. This is a great idea and represents his purpose of starting the business which is inspiring. He is very mature for his age, and I respect the fact that he still gives money from his sales which shows that he truly is trying to make the world a better place (his dream).

Zev Shapiro – The Social Activist Entrepreneur

Zev Shapiro is no ordinary college student. His childhood was unlike his peers. Born and raised in Cambridge Massachusetts, he is currently a sophomore at Harvard University. At the age of 10, he helped manage Senator Elizabeth Warren’s campaign. In 2014, he was invited to the State of the Union Address as Elizabeth Warren’s guest. He enjoys reading academic law and public policy journals for fun and discussing politics. He always has had an entrepreneurial spirit, especially with his visionary personality; he often looks ahead as to what can be solved and improved in our society. Before graduating high school at Cambridge Rindge and Latin in 2020, he launched TurnUp (in 2019), a non profit application dedicated for young activists to increase voter turnout. TurnUp targets Generation Z progressives by having the capability to connect with other progressive individuals for specific causes. Zev wants to provide his peers with a network to organize events, marches, and protests for teenage activists. He specifically focuses on increasing voter turnout in all U.S elections but there are some other causes such as social justice, racial inequality and educational rights issues. The use of TurnUp proved to increase 36 million young voters nationally in 2020. Additionally, TurnUp made it possible for 17,000 people to make connections with one another and attend progressive events and it has over $2,000 individual donors. This new progressive activism app has grown in such a short amount of time. Through TurnUp, Zev Shapiro brings together a new generation of young activists for leftist causes.

Despite Zev Shapiro’s political beliefs, as Christian entrepreneurs we should be inspired by his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication so that we can create some kind of innovation which spreads Biblical Truth, the Word of God, and conservative thought to Generation Z.  So what are we waiting for?
