Alexander Kulitski: A Driven and Young Entrepreneur

Alexander Kulitski is the founder and owner of Smart IT. AlexandAlexander Kulitskier was only 15 and in high school when he first had his idea. He participated in computer programing competitions in school, and this lead him to his idea. He realized that what he was working on for the competitions was very similar to commercial programming. He wondered, if he could do it for the competitions, why couldn’t he start some kind of programing business?

Alexander had both the right passion for computer programing and the right drive to make his idea work. He was able to look differently at his situation and see an opportunity there that no one saw before. His realization that he could take what he was doing for fun and turn it into profit showcases his innovating mind.

I think Alexander’s drive is what makes him unique. His drive to create a successful company helped him in the long run, because he did not have the easiest start. He originally started his search for programming job opportunities at the age of 15. He applied to several places even though he might not have had the right skills for the jobs. His attitude was, “I can figure it out as I go along.” He had an idea, and he didn’t let his current skill level stop him from reaching for his goals. He had the determination to succeed even when the odds were against him.

When he was a freshman in college the ball finally started to roll for him. He got some recognition and started picking up job offers. As his work started to grow he brought in friends around him to help him out. He faced bumps in the road all along the way. His first few projects were not successful. However, what was important was that he continued to work towards his dream. Alexander had the desire to run his own business ever since he could remember. It was something he wanted, and he saw his opportunity in computer programming. He slowly saved enough to rent out office space and equipment. He also as able to pay a couple of employees. Together with his friends in the new space they created Smart IT. “Smart IT builds custom software and web applications for small-medium business and supplies the development and support teams for prominent enterprises internationally.”

I think what helped Alexander to succeed was his persistence. He never gave up on his idea and his dream to own his own business. As soon as he had his idea, he went to work trying to achieve it. He didn’t feel as though he was too young or too inexperienced. He just knew that if he worked hard enough one day his goals would become a reality. I believe this is important in entrepreneurship, being able to keep going even when things get tough.

Jacob Landis-Eigsti- Jacob LE Video Production

Jacob Landis-Eigsti is the founder of Jacob LE Video Production which helps companies gain new marketing and video production clients. He has run his own business for 10 years now and is very successful. Jacob says he started this business because he saw many businesses struggling to tell their story and connect with others online. He wanted to use his marketing and video production skills to help other businesses.

Jacob’s business is very innovative because he uses the internet to communicate with people on how to grow their business through video. I found it unique that his goal is to teach people how to market their businesses better, instead of only trying to make his business the best. He is very selfless in this sense.

Jacob says he starts off each day by making a to-do list with three things he wants to get accomplished for the day. He also turns his phone off for 90-minute blocks in order to get tasks done without getting distracted. Techniques like these demonstrate a focused business person. He also said a success strategy of his is to always follow up with a client or business partner you’ve been talking to. This allows for closure or further conversation with peers.

Facebook, Instagram, and online video advertising are some of the things Jacob focuses on helping people with in his business. We are becoming more and more dependent on social media every day, so I think it was very innovative of Jacob to incorporate this into his business. If people are unsure how to market themselves online, it could be the downfall to their business. Jacob LE Video Production is an easy solution to help small/medium businesses with these advertising techniques.

Being a marketing major, Jacob Landis-Eigsti specifically inspires me to grow in my marketing knowledge so that I can eventually help people in the way that he does. In an interview with Carlyn Runnels he states, “Also, learn business skills first as an entrepreneur. It’s important to be good at your craft, but business skills and sales skills are incredibly important.” This inspires me to learn the basic business skills first, because this will set the foundation for being able to help people with all kinds of businesses, like Jacob does.

Below is a series of blog posts Jacob has posted on a site called Medium in order to assist with marketing, social media and video strategies.

Josh Feinsilber: Kahoot, But Different?

Josh Feinsilber is a young teen and 2019 high-school who created the learning site Gimkit, which was inspired by the popular quiz-like learning game, Kahoot. Feinsilber experienced Kahoot and decided to make a different and better type of app that is very personalized and oriented on achieving goals, so as to motivate students. At his small high school in the Seattle area, more weight is put on projects and hands-on activities than grades; he actually developed Gimkit originally as an independent study project. Now, Feinsilber is worth around $400,000 and Gimkit is worth around $23,000. The site has received criticism for its similarities to other apps and that it is subscription-based, but it has also received a lot a praise at the same time for its distinctive features and success: test scores from users have improved more than that of users of other similar platforms such as Kahoot and Quizlet. Also, the personalization aspect where teachers make “kits,” giving rewards when students master concepts and providing educators easy access to data telling student progress. Overall, Feinsilber used his entrepreneurial mindset to take an existing idea and improve it to make a better product for users.

Andrew Mason – Groupon

The story of Groupon and its main entrepreneur is a dramatic one. Andrew Mason was a web designer paid by tech billionaire Eric Lefkofsky to drop out of grad school and start a business. With his prior experience and classic dropping-out-of-college storyline, Andrew was heading down the road of successful entrepreneurship.

Although he had built enough reputation to warrant a million dollar investment from a former employer, Mason was still in uncharted territory. In an interview with the Gimlet podcast, Mason had said “In the early days we would buy a bunch of academic books on collective action, and me and the other people there would just sit around and read.” The book learning was effective, but there were still some trial and error steps along the way.

While still figuring out what genre of value Groupon would provide its users, Mason and his partners had a few tries and guesses and trips. The original point was to provide an area for people to come up with an idea and go into it together. “I have a plan, but I’m not going to go through with it unless a lot of people do it with me.” Early on, they would seed ideas out to the public and see if they would take. Business was slow, and eventually the users started coming up with their own ideas.

This caused Mason to risk losing his funding; unless he could find an avenue that would provide steady usage and income, Groupon would be shut down. Mason eventually landed on group discount. Groupon sold retail discounts, giving a cut of each sale to the business providing it. Starting off by manually distributing and building relationships Groupon ended up growing faster than Apple, Google, and Facebook. Though he is no longer a part of Groupon, Andrew Mason continues to work as a successful entrepreneur.

Hey it’s WordPress!

Matthew Mullenweg grew up with hobbies like coding, art and economics. A fun mix. One of the main founders of WordPress, his hobbies and skills throughout his life led to many amazing web related ideas. In 2005 Matt left school at Houston and a consulting job to start his overhead business, Automattic. This later led to a slew of other companies that used Automattic as a launch pad, including WordPress. He was just nineteen when he decided to change the way people use the internet to publish.

Automattic and all of its resulting companies has turned into a completely virtual company of over 1,100 employees in more than 62 countries.

WordPress, which is used by many authors and writers to publish blogs, was started because of the closure of b2, the only other open source platform option at the time. Having used b2 throughout his life, its end was a pain for Matt. The idea and plan for WordPress started when Matt was approached online by a fellow coder after he had talked about the lack of a publishing space.

Using b2 as a starting base and template, the two entrepreneurs proceeded to build upon the main idea while improving any faults. A classic mash up of ideas and innovation, WordPress is now used by over 31 percent of the web. It is only one of many successes Matt made for himself, but it very much added to the open source world of the web.

He works on it constantly and takes joy from the benefit people receive.

From educational to professional, WordPress has added levels of simplicity, convenience, and efficiency to the way people work. Matt has an entrepreneur’s  spirit, and from his career history so far, it is easy to see he looks for problems to solve and thrives in finding solutions.

Travis Scott

Travis Scott is a secular rapper who grew up in Houston, Texas. Scott comes from a family of musicians and started playing the drums at three years old and continued to learn more and more about music as he grew up. Scott attended the University off Texas in San Antonio until he dropped out to focus and pursue his dream career. Travis Scott’s music started getting a lot of intention and suddenly, he was one of the most popular rappers. Scott’s story however, doesn’t end there and it hasn’t been a simple world of success with music. He showed an entrepreneurial spirit and mind with how he branded himself.

Travis Scott is very famous for his music, but he has used that popularity to expand into other areas of earning revenue and popularity. Scott has done several collaborations with Nike, designing shoes and clothes that have become sought after and very expensive on the resell market. His shoe designs have been super unique, even for Nike. Scott took a classic Jordan Retro 1 high and made the swoosh bigger, but then flipped it backwards and people fell in love with it.

Fortnite took the gaming world by storm and Travis Scott realized this so he seized an opportunity and performed a virtual concert in the game for more than 12 million viewers. This concert in the game was completely free, but Scott made a fortune off of his merchandise line where he collaborated with Fortnite.

Finally Scott also did a collaboration with McDonald’s and created a $6 meal. Scott was able to reach a much younger market with this meal and attract new listeners to his music. McDonald’s chief marketing officer Morgan Flatley said, “His ability to kind of see where culture is going and have a hand in where culture is going is really unique.” Travis Scott has time and again showed an entrepreneurial trait of always being able to adapt and find new ways to make money and attract new consumers to his brand.

Mo’s Bows

At just 9 years old, Moziah Bridges became a ‘Kid-preneur’ and CEO of Mo’s Bows.  He appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank at 11 years old and furthered his journey with investor Daymond John.  Since then, Moziah has greatly expanded his company.

Moziah fueled his passion for this company based on a need – he couldn’t find any bow ties that fit his style or personality.

Mo’s Bows are unique, hand-made bow ties that “make you look and feel your best while catering to the sometimes conservative, fun-loving lady or gentleman.” Mo's Bows and Daymond John - Business Insider

Moziah stated that he wanted to expand his brand to eventually create a clothing line that has blazers and neckties.  Currently, his company sells bow ties, of course, neckties, and now face masks.  Graduating this past school year in 2020, Moziah dreams of being a fashion mogul and growing Mo’s Bows into a well known public brand.

When going onto Shark Tank, Moziah had sold over 200,000 bow ties.  Currently, his company’s net worth is estimated at $2 million.

Moziah says that one of his favorite things about Mo’s Bows is being his own boss and making decisions at every step of the way.  His mom is also very active in helping and supporting Mo’s Bows.

There’s a lot to be learned from someone like Moziah.  From a young age, he took a passion and turned into a successful business all while having fun.

Jordan Karcher – Grounds & Hounds

In 2012, Jordan Karcher adopted his first dog from a rescue shelter and realized he had a passion for saving dogs in shelters. This is what prompted Jordan to find a way to combine his passion for coffee with his new passion for rescue animals.  This solution to this issue was the creation of his brand, Grounds & Hounds.

Karcher is unique in his entrepreneurial journey because he combines two passions in his life to make a difference.  Grounds & Hounds donates 20% of their proceeds to animal rescue organizations. Their slogan is “every pound saves a hound.”  This combination allows Grounds & Hounds to stand out from competitors who only focus on coffee, rather than helping a cause along the way.  Helping animals drives Karcher to build his brand in the best way possible, because the funds he raise all contribute to his passion for animals.

Grounds & Hounds is also unique in the way they produce their coffee.  Rather than producing coffee in mass amounts, each batch is homemade in small amounts by their “roast masters.”  This production process certainly makes the coffee product seem much more personal to the consumer.  It enforces the idea that Grounds & Hounds is high quality coffee made with a purpose.

Innovation

Grounds & Hounds is constantly innovating in order to stand out on the market.  Instead of purchasing the cheapest coffee beans, they source their beans from the top regions around the world to ensure the best quality taste. In addition, the 20% proceeds are donated to innovative animal rescue centers to promote better living conditions for animals.  Grounds & Hounds also offers a monthly subscription called “Coffee Club” where consumers can receive various coffee flavors each month.  This is different than other brands that only sell coffee individually.

My Takeaway

Jordan Karcher’s story has certainly inspired me.  He found a way to combine his passions for coffee and animals and create a successful company to benefit both passions. It was very encouraging to see that someone so young found a way to act on his passion and create a successful company.  I always saw the coffee industry as one that was controlled by large companies, but Karcher showed that it is possible for anyone to be successful in a market if their brand can stand out.

Samuel Bistrian – Roma Boots

Samuel Bistrian was born in a small impoverished village in Romania and lived there until his family had the opportunity to emigrate to the United States when he was a young boy. One of his fondest memories of his time living in Romania was when he received a pair of rain boots as a gift. These boots were significant to him because of the wet climate of his village and his lack of adequate footwear, but even so, they were more than simply a pair of shoes. They were an agent of life-changing opportunities and an inspiration for all he would do in years to come.

Later in his life, while living in the United States, Bistrian happened to be working in the retail store where Blake Mycoskie launched his first line of Toms shoes. After talking with Mycoskie and hearing more about his “one-for-one” business model, Bistrian decided to do something similar with rain boots.  Despite his student loans and credit card debt, Bistrian started his company, Roma Boots, with the $5,000 in his savings account. He adopted Toms’ “one-for-one” model by donating a pair of boots to an impoverished child for every pair sold. However, he also took this redemptive aspect a step farther by using Roma Boots to support schools in impoverished villages by donating funds and reading materials. Bistrian recognized that in order to eliminate poverty, children needed more than a good pair of shoes. They also needed a good education that would empower and encourage them to do great things with their lives.

I think Samuel Bistrian is an incredible example of an entrepreneur who not only created a successful business, but also touched the lives of thousands of children in the process. He focused on his vision and not his circumstance. Though he did not necessarily have the capital and support that he needed at the time when he started his business, he sacrificed his own resources and personally took on the risk because he was determined to make an impact. His company’s motto, “give poverty the boot”, highlights the redemptive purpose of helping children overcome poverty. To this day, Roma Boots has been fighting poverty and empowering children in 26 different countries and donating over 100,000 pairs of rain boots!

Behind Quizlet

During the school year, one website always rises hugely in popularity among students.
A popular study tool, Quizlet has provided quality studying help to all levels of students. A website and app that allows teachers and students to study through use of flashcards and study sessions, Quizlet has gotten many through midterms and finals. Designed by a young entrepreneur with personal insight to a need, Quizlet was founded in 2005 by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland. He designed it at first to help him study for his French vocabulary and after acing his test, shared it with his friends.
Andrew applied a little bit of the 0 to 1 method to his project which has been part of making Quizlet so successful. It took until 2007 to be released to the public but has since come to be realized as one of the first steps into education gamification. When he saw the impact Quizlet was having on students everywhere, Sutherland dropped out of MIT where he was pursuing a computer science degree to give more attention to his project.
A personality trait of entrepreneurs is willingness to pursue risk and take opportunity when it shows. After having taken a break from Quizlet to work on his education, Andrew fully committed to growing his business. A student designing with students in mind, his approach was correct from the first.
His care for his users and their platform has continued to grow. In addition to the base platform’s effectiveness, Sutherland did not stop there. “The most important thing that I realized during this process was how to treat my users. They’re Quizlet’s biggest asset.” With a business mind and courteous personality, he decided that interaction between user and owner would be part of what made Quizlet exceptional. Andrew Sutherland replies personally to each message, furthering the positive impact his company has on the world.
