Brandon & Sebastian Martinez – Are You Kidding Socks

In 2014, 9-year-old Brandon and 7-year-old Sebastian Martinez founded Are You Kidding Socks, a sock company with a unique twist. The two kid entrepreneurs design and sell socks with unique, exciting designs. It all started with Sebastian, who loved wacky socks. By the time he was five, his grandmother had bought him over 100 pairs of colorful, fun pairs of socks. Sebastian’s mother remembers the very day she asked him, “Would you like to design your own socks?” On that day, June 25, 2013, Sebastian enthusiastically said yes.

Later that year, Sebastian began designing socks while his mother connected with a manufacturer in Guatemala to produce the designs. By 2014, Are You Kidding Socks was an established company, selling thousands of socks from the Martinez home. Sebastian was the CEO of the company, while his mother was the president. They brought on Sebastian’s older brother, Brandon, as the sales rep – due to his vibrant, outgoing personality. He was later promoted to the “Director of Sales” by his younger brother.

In recent year, the Martinez boys have made it their mission to raise awareness for national charities and organizations. Through the sales of their socks, they have raised thousands for nonprofits, such as Live Like Bella, SLAM ALS, Autism Speaks, and the American Cancer Society. They have designed specific socks that represent each cause they support.

The Martinez boys also care very deeply about local communities. They donate their time, resources, and socks to local schools and shelters during annual fundraisers and events. They also partner with local schools to host fundraisers and campaigns.

Since forming the company, the boys have received great recognition, from the mayor of Miami to interviews on CNN and Good Morning America. Sebastian and Brandon have taken a fun, simple idea and turned it into something very impactful.

Andrew Mason

Andrew Mason is well known as being the founder and former CEO of Groupon but that is not the only thing he has accomplished. Mason grew up in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania and at the young age of 15 started a delivery service called “Bagel Express” which operated Saturday mornings. In 2003 He graduated from Northwest University with a degree in music. Instead of going into the music industry however Mason worked for the entrepreneur Eric Lefkofsky as a web designer. After that a well-known Chicago recording studio called Electrical Audio hired Mason as an intern and later an employee. In 2006 Mason was supported by Lefkofsky to start The Point which was an internet social program designed to organize the boycotting and supporting of different causes. The Point had trouble in the market, so it was changed to what we now Know as Groupon, a website that sells coupons for local businesses. Mason was the CEO of Groupon from 2007 to 2013 when he was fired because sales and profit had gone down. In 2015 Mason founded the app Detour which provided audio tours of major cities, Bose acquired this app in 2018. Now Mason works as the CEO of Descript an audio word processing platform that allows an editor or producers to edit sound files. Now Descript is adding a new feature which allows you to type an audio recording that will be in your own voice without you having to record the audio. Andrew Mason shows the creativity and out of the box thinking that I believe all Entrepreneurs demonstrate.

Cain Malroy Is Not Playing Games

Cain Malroy is a nine year old boy from the LA area. He took to his creative side and made an arcade out of cardboard. He used his fathers auto shop as his space and sells one dollar and two dollar tickets for four plays and five hundred plays respectively. Cain also sells T-shirts for fifteen dollars that have “Cain’s Arcade” written on them. He has yet to report his income, but he has received over two hundred thousand dollars in donations. He has become the talk of the town and receives a lot of publicity from the news and radio stations around. His success is do to a video that was posted on YouTube that has gone viral. I think that it is amazing that for how young he is, he has such a strong drive and sense of creativity. It would be great to see a follow up story some day about how he took his entrepreneurial skills into the professional world.

A Different Twitter: Alexis Ohanian

Alexis Ohanian is the founder of the popular social news and conversational website, Reddit. Ohanian doesn’t rely on a story to boost his business but rather the ingenious design that he had for an idea. Reddit was actually the second business that Ohanian and a friend came up with before they found success. They created Reddit with the intention of selling it to the company Y Combinator which theSerena Williams and Alexis Ohanian's Marriage: 13 Things We Never Knew | Page 7 of 31 | Tie Breakery did in 2005. Because of the experience that Ohanian had with creating the platform, he left the company in 2010 and founded another company in the Middle East called Das Kapital Capital. His experience with Reddit allowed him to create this new company without too much trouble. From there, he began to build his personal investments and currently invests in new tech startups.

The interesting thing about the Ohanian is that he didn’t stay with one company too long. He had bigger visions of what he wanted to do with his life. Sometimes its not about riding one idea until the top, but rather letting someone else take it over while he pursues his passions.

Arash Ferdowsi and Drew Houston – Cloud Storage Giants

If you haven’t heard of Arash Ferdowsi and Drew Houston, that’s okay. You might know their company, Dropbox. Dropbox is a cloud-based file hosting and sharing service created by Arash Ferdowsi and Drew Houston, ages 34 and 3, respectively.

Arash and Drew, both of whom are Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates, founded Evenflow in 2007 as a startup company, before changing its name to Dropbox in 2008. The company has seen massive user growth from its inception, starting at 1 million registered users in 2009 to now 500 million users as of 2019. As of now, Dropbox is valued at $12 billion but has been struggling to show any growth. I believe this is largely due in part to its massive competitor, Google Drive. Personally, I use Google Drive as I have always used Google products and applications. Drive allows me to not only show my files across multiple devices, but I am able to conveniently insert some of those files in other applications that I use frequently, such as Google Docs and Sheets. According to forbes.com, Dropbox has struggled to turn in profit at all since its inception. In fact, it has yet to turn a profit, but some articles believe they may finally have positive profits within the next few years.
