Ben Francis: Gymshark

Ben Francis is one of those rare entrepreneurs who didn’t just build a brand—he built a movement in fitness culture. As the founder of Gymshark, he took a simple idea from his garage and turned it into a global brand that’s now competing with giants like Nike and Adidas. But unlike those big names, Francis started as a regular gym-goer who saw an opportunity to make workout gear that actually fit well, looked good, and felt like it belonged to the modern bodybuilding community.

Francis’ journey as an entrepreneur is relatable because he started young, balancing college classes and a job delivering pizza. His days were ordinary, but he had this intense passion for fitness and technology. So in 2012, he and his friends started Gymshark, literally printing t-shirts in his parents’ garage. Their goal wasn’t just to make money; it was to create workout gear that stood out from what mainstream brands were offering. Traditional brands didn’t focus on the tight, fitted clothing that lifters wanted—stuff that would show off hard-earned muscles but also be functional.

What really set Gymshark apart was Francis’ approach to marketing. Back then, social media was just starting to blow up, and Francis was one of the first to realize that influencers could make a brand cool. Instead of spending money on traditional ads, he sent free Gymshark gear to fitness influencers on Instagram and YouTube, making Gymshark gear a kind of badge in the online gym community. Suddenly, Gymshark wasn’t just a brand—it was a symbol of the fitness culture that valued authenticity and dedication over big budgets.

Even when Gymshark blew up, Francis kept focusing on what his audience wanted. He stepped down as CEO for a few years to let more experienced managers lead the brand’s growth. But in 2021, he returned as CEO with a vision to make Gymshark not just bigger, but better, aligning the brand with sustainability and other values important to younger generations.

Ben Francis’ story shows that entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money—it’s about understanding people and culture. His journey proves that a simple idea, driven by passion and creativity, can go head-to-head with industry giants if it truly connects with a community.

Chris Bumstead: Bodybuilding Redefined

(LEFT SIDE – Arnold Schwarzenegger, RIGHT SIDE – Chris Bumstead)

Born in 1995, Chris Bumstead, better known as “CBum,” is a Canadian bodybuilder and social media influencer who has quickly become one of the most recognized figures in the fitness world. Best known for winning the Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title four consecutive times (2019–2023), Bumstead has solidified his position at the top of the bodybuilding elite. Starting his competitive journey at just 19, his natural talent and relentless dedication quickly set him apart, earning him comparisons to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Like Arnold, however, CBum’s influence extends far beyond the bodybuilding stage.

Fitness is a notoriously difficult industry to breakthrough. The competition is high with established and professional athletes with pre-existing followings. Specialized diets, supplements, training programs, and competition fees can create financial barriers for aspiring bodybuilders. Slow physical progress, hormonal fluctuations, and mental barriers can all hinder one’s success. Bumstead has overcome all this and more. Not only has he attained a physique to be desired by sedentary and active people alike, but he’s also successfully translated his fame into multiple entrepreneurial ventures. He launched Bum Energy, a sports and energy drink company, and co-founded Raw Nutrition, a supplement brand focused on high-quality performance and recovery products. His partnerships with popular brands like Gymshark, Vaughn’s Treats, and Revive MD reflect his hands-on approach, ensuring that the products he endorses align with his values of transparency and quality in fitness.

In addition to his business endeavors, CBum is also a massive force on social media. With nearly 5 million followers on TikTok and over 24 million on Instagram, he’s one of the most influential fitness personalities online. He connects with his audience by sharing workout routines, nutrition advice, and personal insights into his life. Bumstead has been open about his struggles with mental health and his battle with IgA nephropathy, an autoimmune disease, further endearing him to fans for his vulnerability and authenticity. Bumstead’s combination of physical achievements, business ventures, and online transparency has made him a fitness icon. By redefining what it means to be a bodybuilder in today’s world, Chris Bumstead has inspired millions to pursue fitness.

Grey Bandit – Courtney & Lindsey Glasser

Alongside her two other siblings, Courtney Glasser founded the well-known clothing company, Grey Bandit. As triplets, the three siblings were a “power trio” in the sense that they each had strengths in their own separate areas—all crucial to the success of their startup. In a Podcast, Courtney stated that she specialized in understanding Grey Bandit’s market. She was knowledgeable about social media and understanding customer behavior. Lindsey considered herself a strong “people-person” and took care of relations. As for Robert, he took charge of warehousing and inventory. All three of them were exemplary in their own areas. Even though they served separate roles, their functions all contributed to one large machine—that being their business.

Grey Bandit did not start as a multi-million-dollar business. It all started with their mother. She, too, was an entrepreneur. As their role model, her successes became an inspiration for her children. Courtney and Lindsey demonstrated that same entrepreneurial passion in their early years. In 8th grade, the girls began selling t-shirts and progressed to shorts in 9th grade. They received plenty of encouragement in school, which the girls claim was a great motivator for their largest project, Grey Bandit.

Within just one year of the launch, Grey Bandit reached nearly 60,000 followers. The girls attest this success to the investments they made back into the business, which were the Instagram influencers they paid to promote their brand. On average, every post from these influencers would result in 150 more followers for the company. The growth was exponential.

What remains admirable about these young entrepreneurs is the social impact they had on the world. Profit, although a benefit, was not the purpose of the platform. Their purpose was to break the stigma that is often associated with mental illness. There was a deeper message involved in their business. In their Ride The Wave Collection, 30% of any item purchased would be donated to several mental health organizations they supported. Not only were Courtney, Lindsey, and Robert great entrepreneurial thinkers, but they were also determined action takers. The important takeaway from their business is to act on your ideas and be willing to ask for help in fields outside your expertise.

SoundMind – an App for a Better Future

In a world full of stressors and increasing anxiety, two students from the University of Southern California decided to address the situation in a new way.

Brian Femminella and Travis Chen, the creators of SoundMind, were 20-years old when their idea was born. With extensive research on music therapy and neuroscience, these entrepreneurs created an app to aid in the fight with a multitude of mental disorders. The main goal of the company was to bring awareness to this rising issue, especially with the impacts of COVD-19 on mental health. Thus, the app was born.

The app’s design is unique. Femminella and Chen use the power of binaural beats and soundscapes to help users deal with stress, anxiety, or trauma. The music has been developed specific to the app by different artists on the SoundMind team. The more you listen to the music, the more the app tailors the music choices to you. It keeps track of the music you find most relaxing and the AI sound recommendation remembers your choices. Since the app’s release, it has also shown that users sleep better, focus better, and feel less suicidal. This app has had an amazing impact so far.

The SoundMind website highlights a few other benefits of using their app:

  • Health security and compliance
  • Analytics and Insights
  • Music customization
  • Integrations
  • 24/7 support
  • Rapid Response and Intervention

The integration feature allows you to link your SoundMind account to the Apple Health app so you can keep track of how you feel and your improvement.

The brilliance of this app aligns with a lot of scientific research on our brains and how they react to music. If you constantly feel overwhelmed by your anxiety, this app can help calm your mind and help you refocus. If you are interested in trying out the app, you can go to their website to check it out.

Tehzeeb Lalani by Anna Ortiz

Tehzeeb Lalani, a young entrepreneur based in Mumbai, India, seeks to heal peoples’ relationship with food. She owns the company Scale Beyond Scale, a Mumbai-based company that consults clients on nutrition. Scale Beyond Scale is designed to help clients move beyond mindsets of short-term weight loss goals and on to mindsets of wholistic and long-term health. Lalani seeks to teach people to design behaviors that they can keep for a lifetime. Working with clients including those with health concerns such as diabetes and heart disease, Scale Beyond Scale is equipped to help people look at issues other than weight loss. She calls the movement toward wholistic health” more sanity, less vanity!” Lalani believes that two strategies for success in implementing ideas are setting deadlines and having a partner for accountability. “Telling people about the idea and that you will bring it to life in a few weeks/few months is also a great way to ensure you hold yourself accountable,” she says for an interview with ideamensch. She is also fond of her morning routines, which include meditation, breakfast, an hour of work, and a yoga class. She says that because she lacks control over the rest of her day, her morning is important for her to feel centered and grounded; she can then tackle anything that comes her way next. I think Tehzeeb Lalani conducts herself with thoughtfulness in both her personal context, with her morning routine, and professional context, in her field that prioritizes psychology. People would do well to slow their lives, think hard, work hard, and take care of themselves as Lalani does.

SoundMind: An App by Travis Chen and Brian Femminella

https://www.businessinsider.com/soundmind-gen-z-founders-pandemic-stress-trauma-solution-2021-11

Travis Chen and Brian Femminella acknowledged how there was a lack of trustworthy mental health resources, and so they decided to come up with an app called SoundMind, which uses music to help reduce anxiety for individuals. Both of these individuals battled immense challenges in their personal lives, and they used them as inspiration to try to provide resources for other people. They created an online environment for people to have crucial mental health resources, and have a sense of community for others who understand the struggles that they are going through. They plan to expand their app even further to allow creators to upload their own sounds, along with commission opportunities.

Shine: the Self Care App for Millennials.

Naomi Hirabayashi and Marah Lidey are the cofounders and co-CEOs of an app called Shine. Both women worked together and were excited to turn their side hustle into a business with the foundation of their professional relationship and personal friendship with each other. They left their day job to make this vision a reality.

The app is aimed at those who are struggling with mental health problems due to a variety of issues such as a breakup, a toxic boss, financial stress, or anything else. They wanted to help millennials navigate through the stresses of life and become more confident in themselves. They created an app that would remind users that they are never alone and to break the stigma around mental health issues. They started this business because they saw a problem and knew they were well equipped to solve it.

The reason Shine has become so successful is because of its accessibility. In order to reach those who are hurting, they knew they needed to make it a resource available to everyone. This tactic has been working for them- they surpassed over half a million users in its first year.

Selena Gomez: Rare Beauty

Rare Beauty - Only at Sephora - YouTube

As many of us know Selena as a successful musician and actress, her skills go far beyond the talents seen in her well known movies or songs. Recently, on September 3rd of this year, Selena released her own cosmetics line named, Rare Beauty. As a makeup and skincare enthusiast myself, I was intrigued to read about her new brand. After some research through the Rare Beauty site and watching reviews, it is clear that Selena made a statement with her new line. With the platform that Selena had already had, she was able to spread awareness of Rare Beauty quickly and began selling on the brands site as well as exclusively being sold at Sephora, online and in stores.

When researching more about her new brand, I began to realize several aspects in her mission behind Rare Beauty that prompted me to write about her for the blog post. Her entrepreneurial mindset is very evident in all she does, especially the thinking behind Rare Beauty. Selena is very passionate about her service and commitment to the communities around her. Selena has opened up throughout the years to the media about her health journey including physical and mental health and hopes to continue to use her voice and actions to make an impact on this community. A large part of the mission behind Rare Beauty is that she wants to be able to raise awareness of mental health and provide impoverished communities with the resources needed in this area.  She plans to do this by every sale of Rare Beauty made, one percent will be donated to raise money for a fund that she started called, The Rare Impact Fund. Selena and her team came up with several goals for the brand, one being to raise 100 million dollars to the fund.  The Rare Impact Fund is meant to increase access to mental health services. Not only did Selena start this fund, but also stated a Rare Beauty Mental Health Council. Lots of thought and planning went into the making of Rare Beauty which will foreseeably be a success since Selena’s dedication and commitment has been present since day one. Selena took the opportunity to give back to a cause she was passionate about, alongside her love for beauty, and create a brand around it. Success has already started not even a month into the debut of the line, beyond the products, consumers have also been intrigued to learn more about the story behind the line. A powerful story to empower women to tear down walls and expectations that society and media has placed onto us, specifically the “unattainable physical perfection”.

We are all rare and are all considered beautiful, and Rare Beauty aims to encourage us to find self acceptance in our own skin and know that we are still beautiful no matter what.

Towering Over The Competition: Ben Towers

Before reading this, take a second to reflect and remember what you were doing in 2011. For most college students whenever they think back to 2011, they may think about school, their friends and family, maybe going on a memorable vacation or receiving an awesome gift. For Ben Towers, when he thinks back to 2011, the first thing that probably comes to mind is when he started his first company at just 13 years old.

In 2009, a family friend challenged him to build them a real website. Most 11 year old’s would take the challenge as a joke, thinking that that was well out of their skill set and capabilities for their age group. Not Ben Towers though. Ben didn’t have prior knowledge about website building before accepting this challenge but, with the help of several YouTube videos, he was able to successfully build a full blown professional website. After completing the first site, Towers continued building sites and in 2011 started his first business named Ben Towers Website Design (BTWD). Less than two years after starting his first company Towers re-branded his company as Towers Design, which is a digital marketing agency and in the same year started Social Marley, a social media management company. Two years later in 2015, Towers would officially launch the service. Towers Design continued to grow then in 2017, through a merger with Zest the Agency, became one of the larger digital marketing firms in Kent, England.

While Towers is certainly well known for his entrepreneurial successes, he is widely known as an advisor as well as promoter for entrepreneurship.

When asked for his advise for young entrepreneurs, Towers said

“1. Get out and give it a go, you don’t even have to wait until you finish school! I didn’t!

2. Be passionate about what you do and make sure your reasons are more than simply making money, you have to love what you do.

3. Make the most of being young, be bold and tell the world! Do not try to deny your age, embrace the advantages of it!”

Most people would be content with this position and continue to grow, but Ben Towers isn’t like most people. In 2017, the same year as his company’s merger, Ben decided to leave and venture out into new endeavors. This year Towers co-founded Tahora, a service that helps to foster and grow good mental health/well-being. While plenty of services already exist for good mental health, Tahora is different in that it targets the young millennial and Generation Z workforce. Ben Towers is towering over the competition and he is only getting started.
