Fire Department Coffee Burns the Competition!

For those who are not yet fortunate enough to know the rush of being a first responder, let me give you a short glimpse of it.

It’s two in the morning, tones* drop. The piercing scream of high pitched wails rip through your sleepy paradise and alert you that someone needs your help. While still half asleep you dress yourself and gear up as you hear the call come through on the radio, “Station 53, EMS 17, Station 50 for a working dwelling fire*…” Those last three words seal the deal. It’s go time. You and your crew jump into the fire engine and pull out into the night. Lights flash in the darkness and the howling sirens shatter the stillness that once was all around. After a long nights work the fire is finally out and you and your crew are back home at the station, exhausted. Good thing your shift only has another eight more hours left to go! Now if only you had some better coffee to drink than stale “donut shop” k-cups.

With stakes as high as life and death and work hours up to and exceeding 24 hour shifts firefighters, police officers, and EMT/Paramedics all need a coffee that works as hard as they do. That’s where Luke Schneider comes in with Fire Department Coffee.

Luke is a firefighter and paramedic for the city of Rockford and also a former Navy serviceman. He and his fellow firefighters set out less than two years ago to make a coffee suitable for the early mornings and late nights of a first responder. Luke and his team are, no doubt, very familiar with the anecdote I began this post with and they did something about it. Their coffee is roasted to order and shipped all over the country from fire houses to people’s houses. However, Fire Department Coffee doesn’t just make great coffee, they give back in a big way.

Fire Department Coffee has this to say on their website about their charitable efforts toward first responders and vets alike, “A portion of every order goes towards supporting firefighter and military charities.” As well as Schneider saying that Fire Department Coffee was, “built around the concept of giving back.”

Fire Department Coffee’s unique position of being a “works as hard as you work” coffee that tastes great and gives back has blown away the competition. Even in the short amount of time that they have been roasting and distributing coffee, they have seen success across the nation. Schneider and his team have truly set a fire that no one can put out!

Helen Greiner: Inventor of the First Robotic Vacuum

Helen Greiner is the c0-founder of iRobot, which she helped to start as a result of her interest in robots. Greiner’s enthusiasm for these intriguing machines came from her fondness for R2-D2 in Star Wars and her desire to create something between a robot and a computer, similar to the one that her dad would bring home from work (shown below).

The idea, in Greiner’s mind, was to create something that would, more or less, have a mind of its own. iRobot’s first  success was a talking doll. After that, the company started working on a vacuum cleaner with SC Johnson Professional. The vacuum was a human sized robot that ran by itself, but the engineers understood that it would potentially be too dangerous at its current size. As a result they focused on building a smaller vacuum that would be more efficient. During this time, iRobot also aided in creating robots that would detect and defuse bombs, building contracts with the military for hundreds of millions of dollars. Since then, iRobot has engaged in other advancements in the robot industry, such as drones. Ms. Greiner helped start CyPhy Works, a drone specific company. CyPhy Works builds drones mostly for military and industrial use.  One example is the testing Greiner did with UPS for delivering packages. It was very successful.

Sword & Plough – Bridging the Civil-Military Divide

S&P 1

S&P 3

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Emily Núñez and her sister Betsy Núñez grew up in a military family, so for them, living on military bases and eating Thanksgiving dinner with hundreds of soldiers in a military mess hall was the norm.  However, when Emily went to Middlebury College, she realized the huge divide between military life and civilian life.  Most of her friends had never met someone in the military and had no idea what military life was like.  During this time, both Emily and Betsy began to realize how difficult it was for veterans to find work as they transitioned from military to civilian life.

These two problems  culminated into a business idea when Emily attended a social entrepreneurship symposium at her college, where the speaker talked about incorporating up-cycling into a business.  Emily had the idea of recycling military surplus into fashionable bags and accessories.  Emily quickly brought her sister, Betsy, on board and Sword & Plough was born.  The name, Sword & Plough comes from the phrase “to turn swords into ploughshares” from the book of Isaiah.  For Emily and Betsy, this means taking military technologies and materials and applying them to peaceful, military applications.

S&P 2

Every stage of their business (from design, to production, to quality control, to sales) is done in the U.S.A. and done by veterans.  They even buy their supplies from companies owned and operated by veterans.  Emily and Betsy want their company to empower veterans and help in their transition back to civilian life.  They donate 10% of their profits to support veterans.  They also want to have their bags be a conversation starting point to strengthen military-civilian understanding and to bring to light veteran issues.  In fact, on their website, they have a “Wall of Heroes” to feature a different military personnel every week.

So far, Emily and Betsy’s idea has been a huge success.  They’ve been featured on shows like Good Morning America and the Today Show, and on sites like Business Insider and Forbes.  I encourage you to check out their website (click here!) to learn more about Sword & Plough, its products, and its mission.  I think that this company is poised to make some really important impacts in the near future.
