Teal Drones: World’s Fastest Commercial Drone

George Matus was only 12 years old when he created his own flying quadcopter. As he got older he became frustrated with the drone options that were on the market. They were restrictive for they were either only racing or only for taking pictures and video. So, he created his own “wish list” of things that he wanted in a drone and went to work making prototypes. After dozens of versions of drones and hours of test flying and crashing he was able to create his dream drone at the age of 16. The drone is capable of flying faster than 70 mph and can withstand wind of up to 40 mph. The product is yet to be released but Matus has plans to release the drone next year with a starting price of $1,300. To date, Teal Drones has raised over $3 million in fundraising and has an extremely bright future ahead.

Benjamin Stern and Nohbo

Benjamin Stern was only 17 years old when he secured an investment from Mark Cuban on Shark Tank for his company Nohbo. Benjamin started his entrepreneurship journey all the way back in middle school, where he started his first venture. Stern would buy his own coffee beans at a wholesale price, from a roaster in Seattle, and would go around his neighborhood selling his own coffee. Part of the sales would go to the Wounded Warriors Project. After this he wanted to create an idea that would go beyond his own neighborhood.

Using his company Nohbo, Benjamin Stern is trying to eliminate the need for plastic bottles in personal car products. Such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and shaving cream. His product is a single use, water-soluble, apparatus that dissolves 100 percent. It is either a ball of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or shaving cream that you just rub on your hands under water and lather up. Moving forward Benjamin is trying to work with top hotel distributors to create a custom line for them. With an increasing consumer demand on the emphasis of cleaner, greener, and healthier products, I have no doubt that this product is bound to really change up the health and body care industry.

The Craft of Custom Crochets

Bella Tonski had a skill for making things with her hands, whether it was crocheting a hat or baking a cake. More than that, she had taught herself how recreate a crocheted item just using a picture as reference, working without any sort of a pattern. Those who are crafters themselves will realize just how impressive this skill is. Bella is a visionary. On her website’s about page, she says,

“I’m a wife, a crafter & creator, a baker, a lover of both eating & cooking, connoisseur of written word, adorer of cats & critters, a Connecticut-dweller, & most important of all, a follower of Christ. I believe that I was created by a creative God to create creative things & crochet is my go-to method to reflect that!”

Though Bella has always been creative, she was not always interested in creating her own business. The encouragement of her husband that caused her to even consider it. Now she has a website, a Facebook page, and an Etsy shop for patterns that she has created.

I find her work to be an inspiration as I am a crafter myself. I admire her abilities and her open commitment to Christ through her life and work.

Daniel Katz, 21; Founder of No Cow

Beginning in his teen years, Daniel Katz frequently involved himself in a number of business ventures. He sold a plethora of items, including electronics, cars, snakes, a house, and energy drinks. After all of those ventures, Katz finally found himself a business that boomed. In 2015 he founded the company that is now known as No Cow. What began as D’s Naturals transformed into a 10 million dollar business by 2017 and changed its name (to No Cow). His business offers low-sugar and dairy-free protein bars, cookies, and nut butters. After making 10 million dollars in 2017, his business is projected to accumulate 20 million dollars in 2018. Another sizable money-maker came from an undisclosed minority investment from General Mills, establishing that No Cow has made a big splash in the food industry. Additionally, Katz employs 12 people. His operation is, clearly, not a minute one.

What is inspiring about such an entrepreneur is, obviously, his very early success. At 21 years old, Daniel Katz has been able to start a business that would take most entrepreneurs years to accomplish. His persistence in pursuing entrepreneurial paths is phenomenal. That persistence is a testament to Katz’s work ethic. He told that the beginning stages of No Cow included 18 hour days, seven days a week for him. All entrepreneurs should know that if you want success, you must put in the effort to obtain such success. Daniel Katz put in that effort, and he is now reaping the benefits.

Thrifting Her Way Into a Successful Business

Susan Gregg-Koger, a CMU alum, is the CEO and co-founder of Modcloth.com. She began this business over 15 years ago in 2002 by collecting and selling vintage clothing online. This company all started the summer before her freshman year of college, as a way to support her passion for thrifting. Here we see the idea of how one can use their passion to start a unique business.

Throughout college, Susan continued to develop her website and process orders. This requires a lot of discipline and hard work, 2 qualities of a good entrepreneur. Her current husband/boyfriend at the time really helped transform the business by enhancing her website. Modcloth.com grew tremendously over the past several years. In fact, now the site has over 300 designers, creating unique clothing. The business has reached $100 million in annual sales.

In an interview, Susan and her husband discussed the difficulties of being an entrepreneur. From their experience, they learned that it is important to try or test new ideas before committing to them. For example, when they decided to expand from 2 to 3 cities, they didn’t realize how expensive and complicated things would get. However, they learned from their mistakes and made things work. It is important to understand that entrepreneurs will experience obstacles and hard times that they have to overcome.

Never fully dressed without … a Bow Tie

Attention all men, I have a question for you. Have you ever felt like your personality has been restricted by the professional clothes you wear? When it is the time to suit up, do you feel like you look like every other man putting on a suit? I would like to introduce to you Moziah Bridges, the designer of Mo’s Bows.

Moziah had always appreciated good taste in clothing, even at a young age. Before he was 10 years old he would casually wear a suit and tie around his neighborhood. He found the uniqueness of suits alluring, though Moziah wasn’t completely satisfied. He could never find the right tie, or bow tie to match his outfit. He went to his grandmother, learned how to sew, and that led to the beginning of Mo’s Bows.

Mo’s Bows is a company that designs any bow tie in whatever fabric, color, style you would like. He has made over $700,000 in sales, appeared on the famous Shark Tank, and signed onto a one year contract with the NBA to make specialized bow ties for basketball teams.

Moziah has demonstrated true qualities of an entrepreneur, or a ‘kidpreneur’. He started with something he was passionate about and found a pain that he wasn’t comfortable with. He then moved to the next step and sought out a solution for that pain. Moziah then shared what he cared. He was determined to make an impact on the world. Moziah has mentioned of

I am inspired to find what makes me smile and learn to make it better. I especially liked how big Moziah’s idea grew. I do not think the goal was to be known worldwide, but look how far a nine year old boy can go.

Strongest Coffee in the World

In America today, at least 50% of the population drinks some form of coffee. That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 million Americans. Coffee is enjoying a lofty position in the hierarchy of mainstream trends. But coffee, having been consumed in the United States since its conception, is no trend. Coffee popularity is booming and so are the number of people supplying it. However, in a world dominated by Starbucks’ pricey lattes and Dunkin Donuts’ mediocre attempts to follow suit, as well as many others, how could a new coffee company ever stand out? By having the “strongest coffee in the world.” That is the motto of Death Wish Coffee Company. Death Wish coffee started as a small coffee shop in Saratoga Springs, NY, founded by Mike Brown. Mike created his own blend of beans and combined it with his own roasting technique to create his differentiated product. Progress was steady until Mike and his team won Intuit’s “Small Business Big Game” competition, landing them a 30-second commercial spot during Super Bowl 50. Since then their sales and business have grown exponentially. Death Wish Coffee were sponsors of the New York Comic Con, NASCAR, and the special Olympics, they event sent their coffee into orbit with the International Space Station. From their humble beginnings, Mike and his team have adapted and grown their product to disrupt their market through differentiation and will reap the benefits of their hard work, well into the future.

They created the single “Lovely” which debuted on the soundtrack for the television show “13 Reasons Why.” The two artists have similar styles in music as in no one is quite sure what genre the two fit in. Billie’s songs cover multiple genres, but have a distinct undertone that only Billie can create.

Billie is known for saying what is on her mind and being very open with her mental health. She incorporates things she struggles with in her lyrics such as depression. Blog Post #6 – Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant is another person who people automatically associate with basketball, and for good reason.  Ever since his retirement, Kobe has been making headlines all over with his business moves.  In March of 2014, Bryant decided to invest $6 million into Body Armor, a sports drink company.  In return, he would receive 10% of the company.  Back in August of 2018, Coca-Cola decided to purchase Body Armor and Kobe saw his investment turn into a $200 million gain.  He saw a return of $194 million which is not too bad for 5 years of ownership.  Also, in January 2018, he received a Grammy for his short-film, “Dear Basketball”.  Kobe Bryant has nearly made more money during his retirement than his 20-year playing career.  If that is not a businessman/entrepreneur then I do not know what is.  He has also been extremely precise as to what endorsement deals he selects because he is focused on being as successful as possible.  Some of his most lucrative deals include partnerships with McDonald’s, Nike, Sprite, and Spalding.  Kobe has also been very wise with his spending habits.  He also has expressed some interest in owning an NBA team and that can be very expensive so he is doing everything he can to make that dream become reality.  Kobe Bryant is an entrepreneur because he is never satisfied, he always is looking for more.  Success can come in a variety of ways, but someone’s bank account is usually a good indicator as to how successful they have been and Kobe’s bank account would certainly say that he is very successful.

Blog Post #5 – LeBron James

When people hear the name “LeBron James“, basketball instantly comes to my mind, but not many people realize how successful he is off the basketball court.  LeBron has remained smart with his money ever since the beginning of his NBA career.  He has constantly had a team of advisors and know how best use his money when opportunities arise.  One of the most well-known business avenues that James has taken is his ownership in “Blaze Pizza”.  He currently owns 11 of these stores and the chain is continuing to grow around the country.  He has also been extremely savvy as to what endorses he accepts from various companies.  He understands his worth and refuses to accept anything less because he is focused on the bigger picture, life after basketball.  James has been quoted numerous times that he wants to one day own an NBA AND NFL team.  Such a feat requires an absurd amount of money, but if anyone can pull it off, it would be James.  A few years ago, he announced that he had signed a lifetime endorsement deal with Nike that was reportedly worth over $1 billion.  Since he now resides in LA, he has also expanded his business connections.  He recently debuted a TV show called “The Shop” and he helped design and produce NBA 2K19.  He represents an entrepreneur because he never gets complacent; he always wants more.  He is not afraid to take a chance if he thinks their is a large payout in the end.  He said that his decision to move to LA was the beginning of his “life after basketball” and that adds even to more to how much of an entrepreneurial mind he has.  He may not retire for 5 more years, but he is already looking at the bigger picture, and that is a rare quality to possess.
