Love Coffee, Love People: Silk City Coffee

Silk City Coffee is a small local coffee shop, co-founded just two years ago by Rob and Sarah May. Married just a couple of years after graduation, the high school sweethearts had dreams of opening up a coffee shop someday, more as something they could do when they retired, but God had other plans. Rob had a passion for all things coffee, and Sarah loved to bake; this was the perfect recipe for a coffee shop, but starting from the bottom in their mid-twenties seemed far-fetched. The right connections were all that they needed, as it turns out. Their friends and mentors, Glenn and Tammy Gerhard, were willing to partner with them, and, through hours of prayer, the rest is history!

Silk City Coffee is a place where the residents of Manchester, CT can go to connect, enjoy coffee and fresh-baked goods, and even listen to live music. This coffee shop hit the ground running and is thriving after two years of business. On main street, Silk City Coffee is in a great central location on the town’s main street, where small businesses have been giving the town new life in recent years.

On the back wall of the shop is a bulletin board under a sign that says, “Love Coffee, Love People.” This is truly the mission of Silk City Coffee. The bulletin board is divided into two halves, one for needs that people may have, and one to display needs that have been met. Anyone who enters the coffee shop may write on a card a need they might have, from advertising a piano for sale to asking for prayers for a job interview. Those who write down their needs are encouraged to read the other cards on the board and attempt to meet one of the needs there. Cards with needs that have been met are then transferred to the right side of the board, and from there into a scrapbook when the board gets too full. This just goes to show how invested Rob and Sarah are in helping their community.

The bakers and baristas are always experimenting with new ideas for baked goods and seasonal drinks. I know this personally because I was privileged to work there all last year as a baker. It was truly an ideal job.

Benelab

Imagine a world where helping people could be as easy as searching google. Well, this is exactly what Jack Kim is attempting to do with his company Benelab. Benelab is a search engine that donates 100% of its profits to various charity organizations around the world.

During Jack’s freshman year in high school he learned how to code HTML and build websites. He thought that it was really fun, and he thought the idea of making something online would be very exciting.  Unlike most people however, Jack didn’t just think about doing something, he actually went ahead and did it. He researched things like AdSense and other online money-making strategies and with this knowledge he created his very first basic search engine. This proved to be a small success for Jack and his simple search engine ended up providing him with a monthly income of $200-$300 with a relatively small group of 2000 visitors a month. This was certainly not an extraordinary amount of wealth, but it did show Jack that search engines had the potential to create large sums of income with a relatively small user base, and this is what led him to continue creating new search engines.

Jack created another search engine that same year called Benesearch which was a search engine dedicated to donating 100% of its profits to charity. However, the search engine still had a long way to go before it would be considered a success, and Jack began giving up on the project. That is when Jack attended a business program at Stanford where he was taught the basics of entrepreneurship, but more importantly, he found professors there that motivated him to give his idea another shot. Jack reworked his search engine and renamed it Benelab and began working with a team made up entirely of motivated kids like him.

Today Benelab has made some traction in the search engine industry seeing about 1,000 searches a day, nothing compared to sites like google, but it is a good start. With this small success they have been able to give hundreds of dollars to various charities like World Concern. Although this is great, Jack is still ambitious for more and has made it a goal to raise $100,000 through Benelab before he graduates from highschool.

Benelab is a very inspiring story that has a lot of important lessons for entrepreneurs. One important point this story highlights is the ability of anyone to turn their skills and passions into an idea that has the potential to affect the world. Jack was just a 16-year-old kid that only knew basic programming and had a love of charity work, but he was able to turn these things into a successful startup. The other important lesson this teaches us is that idea creation/development truly is a process. Even though Benelab is the same at its core to Jack’s original search engine idea, there were many things that had to change before the company became what it is today, in fact Jack had to totally revamp the engine before it began to see any success and even beyond that his team of teenagers made certain aspects of development challenging. Despite these challenges, Jack and the Benelab team continued to persist and eventually they saw some success. Jack and Benelab both certainly have a long way to go, but with all the lessons he is learning on this journey, there is no doubt that the value created through this process will be with Jack and his team for the rest of their lives.

Be Passionate

When one looks in the mirror, what does one see? A child, a business individual, a person who has the chance to make a difference? Zachary Weisenthal saw a boy who was fascinated with web design and computers. Weisenthal grew up like any other child shoveling snow and pet sitting for the neighbors. It was not until he accompanied his father at an entrepreneurial weekend event did a sudden spark of interest happen. Weisenthal already interested in computers and web design, but this opportunity opened up a whole new future for him. He was introduced to the technology WordPress and not long after became a master of the app and set out to start his business. With his previous set in skills of time management, communication, and determination from his childhood jobs Weisenthal set work onto becoming one of the youngest, most successful business people in the world. Zach Weisenthal is know the proud owner of Zach’s Web Designs, building websites for non-profit organizations, jewelers, racecar drivers, etc.

Weisenthal was able to show the world that one does not need money or a big idea to become great, only the opportunity. If the opportunity is presented to you, grab it, and see where it takes you. Of coarse growing a successful business does not happen on it own, it takes time and energy. Another key factor to becoming successful is to be passionate about what you are doing. If you do not find what you are perusing to be interesting to you then it is going to be an uphill battle for you.

Weisenthal suggests on taking risks. How else will you go far if you act like everybody else.

Blog Post #4 – Jack Amend

Jack Amend is a 27 year old entrepreneur from Los Angeles, California.  He received his Bachelor’s degree from University of California, Santa Barbara.  A few years ago, he came up with the idea of wanting to eliminate the carbon footprint created by the internet.  He is extremely successful at what he does, but he often gets overlooked because not many people understand exactly what he is doing.  His project is called The Web Neutral Project.  This project is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the internet through a comprehensive carbon neutral certification program.  So far Jack and his team have already eliminated the production of over 300 metric tons of CO2.  He aims at providing companies with renewable energy sources rather than burning through even more energy.  He wants to eliminate the Internet’s dependency on fossil fuels through a comprehensive website certification program.  He worked his way through the chain of command and made sure to retain on the knowledge he was taught when he was younger.  He displays many characteristics of an entrepreneur.  He is innovative, driven, and always looking to better himself and his company.  He is said to be very good to work for and his employees have nothing but positive things to say about him.  I really admire his ability to not allow his age to slow him down, but rather use it to motivate him.  He does not see barriers as something stopping him, but rather something else that he can overcome and accomplish.

“Get Your Textbooks Here!”: A new way to approach those burdensome costs

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis are two rising entrepreneurial stars in the world of college textbooks. Often, students are looking to buy used textbooks at reasonable prices, and, just as often, students cannot find used books at reasonable prices. Many have attempted to solve this problem, few have succeeded. Van Maderen and Davis, however, have managed to develop a profitable company off of this problem.

Their company is called Perlego. Van Malderen and Davis both already had entrepreneurial experience, prior to their team-up. Perlego can be likened to Netflix and Spotify, but rather than movies and music, Perlego is an online platform for buying, storing, and reading educational e-books. In order to bring in revenue, Van Malderen and Davis charge a monthly subscription fee, similar to Netflix and Spotify. Their company has already grown to twelve members, and their site has already amassed works from over 1,000 publishers.

Van Malderen and Davis have shown incredible insight into how this generation is so tech-dependent. With that in mind, their idea heavily relevant to this generation. So often, people have been transitioning businesses to online platforms. As college students know, textbooks are a burdensome expense without many cheap, online options. Perlego addresses that gap in the textbook market by offering a solution that makes obtaining multiple textbooks for a low-cost, easy.

I am inspired by this innovation because it is very applicable to my own life-experience. As a college student, books are burdensome, and this solution is very practical. There is a misconception that entrepreneurs have to have a break-through, unheard-of idea. This is not necessarily break-through nor unheard-of. Van Malderen and Davis took what they were experiencing and found a practical, not too far-fetched solution. Their intuition is inspiring and has prompted me to look into my surroundings for practical solutions.

It’s In The Bag

Lt. Emily Núñez Cavness was a millennial on a mission. She was an “Army Brat” her whole life and was continuously surrounded by military influences. Even at a young age she knew she wanted to help veterans. However, her vision wasn’t realized until she was deployed. It was in Afghanistan of all places that she decided to officially start Sword & Plough. The name was a clever play on the idea of taking military supplies and repurposing them for civilian products, which is exactly what they do. The company recycles military supplies and materials that would otherwise be left to waste and pollute the earth, and turn them into totes, backpacks, accessories, and handbags.

She started the company with her sister Betsy, and is currently still the CEO as well as serving as a Captain in the U.S. armed forces. Over the last several years Sword & Plough has recycled 30,000 pounds of materials and sold over 7,000 bags and accessories. The real mission is found in the fact that they currently employ 38 veterans.

Núñez Cavness was one of the first 100 women to attempt the U.S. Army’s Ranger Training Assessment Course as well as named a White House Champion of Changed and Forbes 30 under 30 fellow. Emily and Betsy are definitely a powerhouse duo and have quite the vision. Their mission has a real purpose and their product is of the quality. It will be great to see where Sword & Plough ends up.

Jessica Alba is just being Honest

Jessica Alba is very well known for being a successful Hollywood star, but she is also the founder of her own cosmetics business. The 37-year-old started her company in 2012 called Honest. The mission says, “We’re a wellness brand with values rooted in consciousness, community, transparency and design. And we’re on a mission to empower people to live happy, healthy lives. Every day and in every way, we hold ourselves to an Honest standard.Image result for jessica alba honest company

The Honest Company has over 120 whole ingredient products like new organic beeswax sunscreen or the clever insulation pocket hidden inside a chic $170 vegan-leather diaper bag. Alba spends over 86 hours overseeing marketing and brand development for a company. Her goal was to fill the growing demand for nontoxic cosmetic products, particularly among young new parents who are concerned with their children’s health and well being. Having kids of her own she knew of the concern to make sure that the products they are using are safe and nontoxic in all ways. This is why her idea has been so successful, parents are willing to spend money on their child’s safety.Image result for jessica alba honest company

The Honest Company first year selling products was in 2012 and they had $10 million in revenue. Industry insiders are predicting over $250 million in the upcoming years. Alba’s investment potentially will make her a fortune of $200. At such a young age Alba has created a whole new brand in the cosmetic industry and she is only starting. She said once, “If we really want to make a difference in the world and people’s health, it’s billions and billions of dollars, not just one.” Her goal is to make a difference in health and wellness and she is definitely on her way.

Tree-planting Tea Business Continues to Grow

Mark Sotomayor, a fellow Grove City entrepreneurship major, started his own business in October of 2017. Té Amo was created in response to Mark’s belief that he should start a business in college due to his major. Mark summed it up like this, “If you’re gonna major in it, why not try your hardest to start a business?” He knew that if he came up with an idea, he could also use it to enter into various competitions that Grove City pays for . Using his Peruvian grandmother’s chai recipe, Mark shares his love for tea with Pittsburgh, and gives the proceeds to Haiti. Having gone to Haiti before, Mark came up with an idea for a value proposition: for every bottle of tea bought, one tree is planted in Haiti. Trees naturally make the soil more rich in nutrients, thus causing more produce to be able to grow. With more resources, Haitians can make a living and feed their families.

During my interview, Mark’s face became serious as he explained that not all aspects of his business have been sunshine and rainbows. This past year, there was a mix-up with Mark’s business taxes, making him receive a hefty $800 fine from the IRS. In addition to this, Mark also received a cease and desist order from a company in Guatemala with the same name, Té Amo. With these two problems along with various others, Mark does not know for sure what the future holds. But he does know that, “People are supportive of my idea…It makes them feel something, as it should.” While Mark encountered many hardships, he still feels confident in the idea of his product and he wants to make it work. Exemplifying true grit, Mark illustrates how to persevere through seemingly impossible situations because his vision is worth more than just a paycheck.
