The Bucket List Family – How Garrett Made Millions Through Snapchat

Garrett Gee is, in my opinion, one of the most inspirational millionaires alive today. His story is quite enthralling– he was a college freshman when he (and 2 other guys) came up with the innovation of an app called Scan.

Does the black and white pixel-y looking mural look familiar to you? Gee and the other 2 creators incorporated the QR code into an app that would allow for users to easily and efficiently scan codes with their smartphones.

However, that’s not all.

Gee was a college freshman when he came up with the innovative idea, and he entered his idea in a student competition at Brigham Young University. The trio continued to grow their company in 2011, calling it Scan, Inc., and released their iOS application shortly after.

That’s still not all.

While Gee loved being an entrepreneur, he wanted to quit while he was ahead. His co-founders complied but had one condition, “that he help them raise the numbers before his exit” (source). This led them to Shark Tank.

…where he was rejected.

However, Snapchat strolled along in 2014 and bought the company for $54 million.

Recognize this?

Snapchat used Scan Inc’s technology to create the Snapcode.

There’s still more. While all 3 founders received a hefty amount of money and are millionaires, Gee decided that he would not make a dent in his funds. Instead, he and his wife sold all of their belongings, grabbed their two kids (aged 3 and 1, respectively), and hopped on a long excursion around the world. The family launched a blog as well as a social media profile where they raise a substantial amount of revenue.

So basically they’re living my dreams of traveling the world and making money while doing so.

Garrett Gee’s story is inspirational. He was fairly young, a freshman college student, when he came up with the idea. Like ENTR 101 students will be doing, he entered a competition for the idea and continued to build on it– creating a flourishing company and selling it. Not only that, he decided to keep his mitts off his funds and be smart about spending.

It’s heartening to hear that a college freshman underwent a long journey to success. Sometimes it can be discouraging when thinking about the long path ahead, but Gee proved that it is possible to achieve success while saving the millions and millions of money in the bank. Personally, I’m jealous of his life, but I’m also encouraged. He didn’t enjoy the office life, but enjoyed productivity and creation. Therefore, he decided to follow his passions– creating and traveling, as well as serving (they raised $75,000 to fund a school in India). He encourages others to follow their passions as well and is an embodiment of a wise millionaire.

Monroy Arcade- One Successful 9 Year-Old

Caine Monroy is a nine year-old entrepreneur that decided to set up his own arcade in his dad’s auto parts store. The arcade is in a makeshift state of cardboard currently but has been a relative success. Caine’s success is mostly due to a video featuring him and his idea that went viral on Vimeo and YouTube.

Being the talk of the town, Caine’s arcade business is visited constantly by both television crews and enthusiastic children who are eager to take a peak at his development. Caine has attracted a lot of business with his extremely low pricing of $1 and $2 for tickets. The cheaper of the two tickets allows for a customer to have 4 plays while the second ticket allows for up to 500 plays enabling the customer to decide just how much time they are willing to spend at the arcade (price matters little). On the side, Caine also makes money by selling shirts that say “Caine’s Arcade” for $15 a piece. As of now, it is not clear how much money Caine has earned total, but he has made up to $212,000 in donations alone.

Caine’s business is relatively small right now, but is growing rapidly in popularity. He is also getting the name of his business out by selling shirts that advertise his business when worn by his satisfied customers. It goes to show, you are never too young to become an entrepreneur. You just need a cool idea and a market segment to sell it to.

David Karp – Millenial Entrepreneur & Founder of Tumblr

David Karp is the young millennial who founded the popular microblogging and social networking website Tumblr in 2007. Growing up in New York City, he started learning HTML and designing websites for businesses at the young age of 11 years old. Karp never earned a high school diploma, and worried that this fact and his young age would hinder his career and people would not view him as legitimate. As August 2017 records report, Tumblr hosts over 360 million blogs, and has approximately 555 million visitors each month.

Karp began his career as an intern under Fred Seibert at his company, where he built its first blogging platform and was in charge of editing their internet video network. He later started working for a company called UrbanBaby, an online parenting forum up until 2006. Shortly after, Karp jumpstarted his very own software consulting company, Davidville. A year later, Karp and his partner Marco Arment began working on the microblogging website known as Tumblr. Right away Tumblr raised $750,000, and by 2011 had raised about $80 million. In 2011, Tumblr received about $125 million from investors and the money was used to begin advertising and promotion.

In 2009, Karp was named Best Young Tech Entrepreneur by BusinessWeek and in 2010 was reffered as, “one of the top 35 innovators in the world before the age of 35” by the MIT Technology Review TR35. Also in 2010, Tumblr was named as a finalist in Lead411’s New York City Hot 125. Tumblr is now used by several celebrities and was the first blogging post to host former President Obama’s blog.

There is so much we can learn from Karp’s story and success, one being that you should NEVER step down and let your young age discourage you!

The Genius of Groupon

How does a 29 year-old become worth more than 600 million dollars in just ten years? One word: innovation. Andrew Mason founded Groupon in 2008 with the simple idea to use the internet to both promote local businesses and find amazing discounts with the click of a mouse. Every quarter Groupon has more than 42 million unique customers, and remains on top of the coupon hunting competition. However, this did not happen overnight. Before Groupon, Mason started in the entrepreneurial field with ‘The Point’. The Point was a “social initiatives platform” dedicated to bringing local people together to accomplish a goal. It was decided that the website was simply too abstract to market, but it was far from a failure. Mason took the imperfected idea, stripped it down, built it up, and the following year revealed Groupon.

Groupon both aids the community and everyday people by promoting limited time offers for local businesses. The company prides itself on building communities, making life less boring, and starting and ending with the customer. Groupon collects 50% of every transaction plus a small credit card fee. By 2010 it was reported the company’s annual income was in excess of 800 million. The site has remained relevant today by living the same ideal Andrew Mason did when creating it originally: innovating. They have continued to transform to fit the technology curve, putting more emphasis on simplicity, and revamping their app to meet consumer needs.

Although a multi-hundred-million dollar business they continue to operate as the entrepreneurially driven project they started as in 2008.

ZOX: Started In a Basement Now We Here

ZOX, also known as ZOX Straps, is a home based business run by the Kuiper Brothers. The product ZOX focuses on is reversible elastic bracelets. With colourful and meaningful designs to go along with every kind of outfit, ZOX has grown more and more popular over the past several years.

Jason Kuiper, the eldest of the 3 brothers, came up with the idea one day simply as an accessory for the numerous shoes he owned. In 2010, he began by making some bracelets in his home in Arizona and simply wearing them around. One weekend he was home visiting his brothers in Michigan and they both complimented him on them. That night his whole family designed their own with markers and elastic. As time went on, friends began to ask about them and an interest for them became apparent. At this point the brothers began brainstorming and decided to make a business out of this unique hobby. After much research and trials, they found a company based out of LA to print designs onto elastic for them. Once the brothers sat down and built a web sight, ZOX was launched.

Now the Kuiper brothers own a successful business and are pouring out their passion for creativity through it. Everyday they brainstorm and make their product meaningful. After designing a new line of bracelets, the brothers produce a specific amount of them and proceed to sell only what they have, making them a collectible. The community of ZOX owners is like none other. The love of the brothers for what they do is apparent in the pure quality and thoughtfulness of their products giving the community of buyers something to be proud of.

Starting as an idea in Jason’s basement, ZOX is now a successful business built on originality.

Jessica Lee, Young Entrepreneur of Cerise Tea

Not only is Cerise Tea an amazing non-profit, fashion organization launched by a young entrepreneur, the name is fantastic as well. You may be wondering what even is “cerise.” Cerise is French for “cherry.” Now go back and take a look at the first picture on top of this post. And keep reading it (aloud) until you get it.

Jessica Lee, the founder of Cerise Tea, has many notable achievements as a current college student. Launching the company in 2014 as a high schooler, she has seen immense growth and excitement surrounding her start-up, non-profit organization. Cerise Tea sells clothes online geared towards teenage girls, which then donates its profits to the American Cancer Society. Realizing her love of fashion and her desire to give to those in need, Lee combined her two loves to be the driving passions behind a flourishing business. Cerise Tea’s mission to help others; the simple but trendy clothes; and the cheap prices amassed together were ultimately the factors in the success of the business.

While not much is known about Jessica Lee, her online resume lists that she attended high school from the years 2013-2017, and she first enrolled in college in 2017. Her resume doesn’t say it explicitly, but readers can inference that Lee is merely a college freshman.

Lee is truly an inspiring figure who not only developed a business derived from her passions, but also continuously works hard to learn more and more. She is presently studying business economics, and though her company keeps her busy, she has also been an intern, an ambassador/leader for various organizations, and created and pitched to Venture Capitalists at UPenn.

The Rent the Runway Revolution: How Two Women Changed the Fashion Industry for Good

In 2009, two young women attending Harvard Business School met for their weekly coffee and business brainstorming session. Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss both knew they wanted to start a business together, but for many months they brainstormed ideas which never seemed to stick. However, on this particular afternoon, Jennifer Hyman mentioned to Fleiss that her sister would be attending a wedding next weekend, but had nothing to wear. She voiced the frustration shared by women across America, that it is difficult to justify spending hundreds of dollars on a dress you only wear a few times. As she said this, she came up with a business idea which would solve this problem and revolutionize the market of high end women’s fashion.

Hyman and Fleiss conceptualized a business model where they would partner with different well-known, high-end designers from around the world and rent these designer dresses out to women for a few days for a fraction of the cost of buying one of these dresses. These two young women started out by buying dresses in their own sizes and going around to different college campuses on the weekends of big events and putting up flyers and sending out emails announcing that the female students could rent these designer dresses for a reduced price and simply return them after the event. With each campus these two went to, their business model proved very popular, and with each event, they continued to refine and adjust their model until they landed on the current business model of Rent the Runway. Since 2009, Rent the Runway has grown from a few designer dresses advertised through flyers on college campuses into a $15 million corporation with an extremely user friendly app and a variety of supplementary services.

One things which makes Hyman and Fleiss stand out as unique in the world of innovation and entrepreneurship is their approach to founding a startup. While many young entrepreneurs look for a problem in their field of study or expertise which they can construct a solution for, Hyman and Fleiss started with a problem they simply observed, despite their lack of knowledge in the fields of fashion or technology.  However, by recording customer reactions to their product and collecting customer testimonials, these young women were able to get the designers on board and soon had enough funding to hire people with expertise in analytics, technology, fashion, and customer relations in order to create the best business possible.

Even eight years removed from its founding, Rent the Runway is an incredible company to watch innovate and expand. Because of the founders’ passion for giving women the opportunity to have that “Cinderella experience” and look elegant, extravagant, confident or professional for an affordable price, the company continues to grow its inventory, expand it market, and offer additional services, such as makeup and jewelry tips depending on the dress or outfit you rent.

Hyman and Fleiss have also sought to optimize the customer experience by offering free shipping and dry cleaning, along with spending a great deal of time and money on analytics. This has allowed them to find what colors and styles customers prefer, along with how long customers like rentals to last so that they can give the customer the best, most convenient experience possible. Rent the Runway is constantly offering new features, different dresses, and featuring a variety of both well-known and new designers, which keeps their business in a constant state of growth and expansion.

Hyman and Fleiss are truly inspiring to all young women looking to be entrepreneurs. They actively thought about problems, and rather than waiting for funds or investors to back their idea, they eagerly engaged their clientele, pivoted based on the feedback they received, and then sought out investors and designers with confidence in their product and the data and testimonies to back it up. These two women are constantly pursuing excellence, passionate about their product and their clients, and dedicated to inspiring future women entrepreneurs.

Airbnb’s Brian Chesky revolutionizes a Sleepy Industry

Brian Chesky, the co-founder of Airbnb, found a way to change an industry that hasn’t seen changes in decades. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of design school, he moved to San Francisco with his college friend Joe Gebbia. At the time, San Francisco was having a design conference and hotel rooms were in high demand and the whole area was booked, so the pair came up with the idea to rent out a room in their apartment and give their guests breakfast too in order to make a few extra bucks to afford their rent.  After years of ideation and innovating they slowly scaled the idea into what is now Airbnb. Airbnb is an online marketplace and hospitality service, that enables people to lease or rent short-term lodging all over the world. Chesky is driven by innovation and constant improvement. Currently, he is working on revamping Airbnb into a full-service travel company. Chesky is an inspiring millennial entrepreneur because of his ability to see an opportunity in the market and scale it into an international business that changed the future of travel as well as the hospitality/ hotel industry. I recently stayed at an Airbnb in Manhatten and it was a simple way to feel like a real New Yorker. Additionally, I think that Airbnb is a particularly inspiring company because it allows its hosts to also be entrepreneurs in their own space by renting out their space to other travelers. From Chesky’s story, others can be more aware of problems and freely imagine solutions even if it seems like there are insurmountable barriers because Chesky and his team were able to do so.

ManCan- Manly Scented Candles

Hart Main is already a successful entrepreneur at the age of 14. With the help of his family, he has developed the ManCan which is a brand of candles for men. Some of the candle scents consist of fresh cut grass, sawdust, campfire, bacon, grandpa’s pipe and more. Today, ManCan candles are sold in over 60 different stores across the US, and around 9,000 units have been sold. Hart plans to devote as much time as he can into this growing business but must also focus on his schoolwork being 14.

Hart developed this idea after making fun of his sister who was selling more girly scented candles at a school fundraiser. Hart saw the problem that their were not enough candle scents that appeal to men so he began brainstorming ideas for manly scented candles. He put in an initial investment of $100 to get the business started and his parents put in another $200. What began as a small idea became something much larger and much more successful as this family began to develop their product.

Hart’s story is an inspiration to all young entrepreneurs in the world today. No matter what idea you have or how small your business seems in the beginning, there is the potential for growth if you keep thinking of ways to improve.

Kaylena Marie’s Bakery: A Vision of an Entrepreneur

Back at home in Orchard Park, a girl who graduated one year before me in high school opened up her own artisan bakery in town! Kaylena Marie Eisenhower is a twenty-year-old entrepreneur who started selling her baked goods online at a very young age. Throughout high school, Kaylena continued to cater and sell various baked goods, even if that meant waking up very early in the morning to send out shipments before school started at 7. After graduating high school, Kaylena spent 2 years studying Culinary Arts to further her education. During this last year, Kaylena transformed a small rental space into a gorgeous artisan cafe, where anyone can order pastries, sandwiches, coffee, and a whole lot more. The store spaced has been transformed into a beautiful, comfortable atmosphere. Before coming back to GCC, I stopped by the bakery for the first time. The bakery opened at 8am, and there was a line outside of her shop waiting for the freshly baked goods. With the help of her family and friends, Kaylena has offered Orchard Park a wonderful space for community, creativity, and bliss.
