13-Year-Old Bow Tie Connoisseur

I’ve loved Moziah Bridges ever since I saw him on Shark Tanka few years ago. He’s thirteen and he has his own bow tie company. He started it when he was nine under the supervision of his mom, Tramica. The thing I love most about his company is how cool the brand is. Everything about it, from the story to the bow tie designs to the way his website is set up, seems to flow together to form one coherent brand that is totally his own. He’s been successful, too. This year alone, he’s projected to make $250,000 in revenue. He sells mainly through his online store but has branched out into shops and boutiques across the United States, too.

I think his story is inspiring because he’s a perfect example that all you need to start a great company is a vision and a support system. He had no experience with the fashion industry when he got into it at nine years old, just a dream and a helpful mom. It’s grown into something huge, just because he had the courage to start.

Moziah still has a lot of dreams he’s chasing after. His goal is to be in college with his own clothing line by the time he’s 20. He also wants to get more involved with charities. Right now, he’s donating money from his business to help his local community center in Memphis.

I think Moziah’s story is fantastic. It’s a simple and classic example of what can happen when you have good intentions and a vision for where you want to go. We can all learn a lot from him.
 

Palmer Luckey

If you’re familiar with the gaming world then you should know that most of the time you are using some type of controller and you are looking at some type of screen as you play. Well the 21-year-old video game fan, Palmer Luckey, plans on changing the way games are played in a new and interesting way. He is managing to do so with his invention called the Oculus rift.

Luckey is working on perfecting his invention with the company he founded called Oculus VR. Now as I have stated before the usual gaming equipment are controllers and televisions. With Luckeys Oculus Rift he plans to immerse players into a virtual reality. The Oculus Rift itself is a virtual reality headset that displays the game being played directly in front of your eyes. Now what else is cool about this headset is that with every movement you make with your head it affects the way you see the game. For example, say that you physically rotate your head as if you were looking to the right and then left; the headset will monitor these movements and translate them into the game.

Luckey has already received endorsements from big name gaming companies such as Valve and id Software and has raised over $91 million dollars in funding for the Oculus Rift. With all this attention and funding who knows what the future of gaming has in store for this innovative and cool product the Oculus Rift.

Colatris: Mobile to Global

A problem faced by many has just been taken head on by three young entrepreneurs in San Francisco, California. The app started out as an experience one of the co founders experienced during his visit to Chile and saw an immense need for improvement with the poor quality apps being offered and brought to market. This app helps localize mobile apps to translate with people throughout the world. These three tech entrepreneurs recognized that their was a problem and set out to capitalize on it. Common knowledge is that it is hard enough to develop a successful strategy and layout of content in your own country and native language and be successful. The thought of tackling a foreign language and country head on with a total different culture is intimidating and very difficult. A lot of expenses can incur while you try to make a splash in a whole new area. This app they created works to solve this problem and to provide a perfect fitting and existing user interface.

Before Catherine Cook was an entrepreneur herself it was her brother Dave Cook that was the first entrepreneur in her family. The experience from Dave would end up helping Catherine with her business venture.

Being a new student at her high school Catherine Cook wanted a better way to get to know her classmates. One day Catherine and her brother Dave were flipping through their yearbook and started to brainstorm. After noticing how useless the information was that the yearbook had to offer she decided to do something about it. Catherine looked up to her brother Dave and thought that if he could have a successful start-up company she could to.

Catherine started the online social network website with the name MyYearBook.com. Which today is better known as MeetMe.com. At the time Catherine looked at Facebook and knew that it was a social network for people that you were already friends with. But Catherine’s goal for MeetMe.com was different. Catherine wanted to make a site that was meant for you to make new friends instead of just interacting with the friends you already have.

So through interesting quizzes and games and other aspects of the site Catherine achieved her goal. Catherine Cook is now worth $30 million dollars and MeetMe.com now gains 86,000 new users every day along with 300,000 new photos every day.

 

16-Year Old Millionaire Necklace Maker

Maddie Bradshaw is popular on the blog tonight.  Like Grace, I researched Bradshaw for this post. I want to talk about her success from a slightly different angle, though.  As you might have read from Grace’s awesome post, Maddie Bradshaw is a 16-year-old millionaire.  She designs and sells Snap Caps, creative bottle caps that can be worn as jewelry. She has 25 employees and sells over 60,000 necklaces each month.

I found her story particularly interesting because she isn’t selling something that solves a huge, mind-boggling problem.  In fact, she’s similar to Apple in that she’s giving people something they didn’t even know they wanted.

So, why are people buying from her?  Anyone can make a simple necklace, and many companies do. What sets Bradshaw apart?  She presents Snap Caps as the necklace that celebrates and brings out a girl’s unique qualities.  Each necklace has a theme, whether fairytale or music or ladybugs or faith.  Girls choose the ones they think fit their personality. Just like Zappos, she’s putting a bigger “why” behind a product most people don’t usually think much about.

Her approach fits right into the “conceptual age” idea we were talking about in class.  To have a place in the market, products need to be more than just functional.  They need to stand for something.  Snap Caps stand for uniqueness.

Bradshaw’s success shines far beyond her net worth.  She has appeared on multiple TV Shows, like The View and Shark Tank, and has even published her own book, You Can Start a Business, Too. Her biggest piece of advice to young entrepreneurs is to follow your passion.  She says, “If you come up with an idea and you love it, chances are other people will, too.” I think people forget this a lot.  They don’t work towards something they love because they’re scared it won’t interest others. That has certainly been true for me and many people I know.  Bradshaw is a wonderful reminder that you can create a business around any passion.  She took the risk most people wouldn’t have and it’s paying off for her in amazing ways.

Tumblr: A Safe Place to Blog

I think this millennial entrepreneur is an appropriate candidate to be blogged about. At the young age of 29 David Karp is the founder of the blogging platform Tumblr. Now I am sure that many of you have at least heard of it because it currently has close to 50 million users. The founder himself is worth close to $200 million.

I would guess that many of you have heard of Twitter and Facebook which can be considered blogging platforms too but only on a micro-blogging level; compared to the tools meant for blogging such as WordPress, Blogger, and TypePad. Tumblr is meant to be a different kind of blogging platform compared to the others.

Karp intends Tumblr to be a place for blogging with a different feel to it. He believes that the other big blogging platforms are perfectly fine; he just thought they were too difficult to use for people who don’t think of themselves as good writers. So Karp created Tumblr as a tool/environment he thinks will make it easier and more meaningful for people to share their thoughts and ideas.

Karp created Tumblr for the people that don’t really enjoy writing but want to share their thoughts and ideas through images, words, and videos in a place they can feel comfortable. A place where people can build an online identity and be proud of what they built.

Millionaire at 16

Owens was inspired to get into the business world by the former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs. At age seven Christian Owens received his first computer. Then at the age of ten he taught himself how to web design. By the time Owens was 14 he had created his own companies by the names of Mac Bundle Box and Branchr. Mac Bundle Box was the first venture website Owens had created.

Mac Bundle Box was created to make it cheaper for consumers to buy popular Mac applications. Owens made this possible by selling these applications in a bundle rather than the applications being sold by themselves. This new way to sell apps had great early success by pulling in $700,000 in its first two years.

Owens then used the money earned from Mac Bundle Box to launch another company named Branchr. Branchr is an advertising pay-per-click company that Owens launched only a year after Mac Bundle Box. It works as a stage for owners of websites to sell advertising, and for business owners to buy this advertising. In its first year Branchr brought in a whopping $500,000. Combining this with the success from Mac Bundle Box is what made Owens a millionaire by the age of 16.  Branchr now has over 11,000 clients and sells more than 250 million advertisements a month.

Even with the success of his two businesses Owens does not plan to stop anytime soon. Owens plans to become the top name in mobile advertising and the top name in the internet world.

Gregory Spencer, The Stove Man

Gregory Spencer is the 29 year old co-founder of The Paradigm Project. They are a non-profit organization that distributes clean, efficient cook stoves to developing countries. If you’re wondering why this is even important, it is because of a few main reasons. First, pneumonia is the biggest killer of children globally, and is often linked to indoor cooking smoke. Four million women and children die from it each year according to Paradigm Project’s website. Developing countries often either have to burn fuels that create a lot of emissions, or use non efficient stoves, or even open fires which create more smoke than a quality stove would. This is not their choice, but what they have to do to survive. Second, the stoves that Paradigm Project distributes make less smoke, so they are better for the environment since they help lower CO2 emissions. Their stoves also use less fuel, which means less trees need cut down. The stoves also save the impoverished families in fuel cost, allowing them to have money for other things.

Spencer is interesting to me since he is not a traditional entrepreneur, but a highly successful social entrepreneur. Social entrepreneurs can’t be ranked by the money they make, but instead by the impact they make on society. The statistics on their webpage of how their efforts are changing the world is very impressive. From the roughly 50,000 stoves provided since 2008, $23 million has been saved by families in reduced fuel bills, about 1.4 million trees have been saved, and an estimated 400,000 tons of CO2 have been offset. From the extra money from donations, they have also invested roughly $7 million into developing countries. His achievements are impressive, and why he was chosen to be in Forbes 30 under 30 social entrepreneurs in 2012. Another impressive thing to me is that as successful as his organization is, he is still highly involved. Management, strategic planning, communications, and being in the field are a few to name. Instead of hiring people to take on some of his responsibilities when his organization made it big, his passion for making the world a better place keeps him working hard, and strongly involved.

MyYearBook:Catherine Cook

At the young age of 15, Catherine Cook and her brother came up with a great business idea.  Having just moved to a new school, they decided to flip through the yearbook in an attempt to meet other kids from their school using the only resource they had. While flipping through the pages, they realized how ineffective this method was. This got them thinking. What if they could somehow put the yearbook online so that they could socialize with the other kids?

So this is exactly what they did. With the help of their older brother, Geoff, a web entrepreneur, and his $250,000 investment, Catherine and her brother began their venture into the business world. Working with a team of developers in Mumbai, they were soon able to bring their idea to life. In April of 2005, Catherine and her brother were able to launch their website within their school. Aimed at high school students, this website allowed students to interact and meet online; taking fun quizzes and participating in ice breakers. Within the first week, myyearbook.com had its first 300 members. From there, their company grew rapidly.  In 2011, MyYearBook joined with Quepasa, a company that runs social networking sites aimed at Latinos, in a $100 million deal. This event completely changed the company. Today, Catherine’s older brother is the CEO, and Catherine is the Vice President of what is now known as MeetMe.com. MeetMe.com focuses specifically on the experience of people branching out and connecting with new people. They have become a more versatile site, catering to all ages, and leading the public market for social discovery in the US.

It is truly amazing how someone so young can come up with an idea so big. Catherine Cook is an inspiration to young entrepreneurs everywhere, showing how dedication and a little luck can take the simplest of ideas and turn them into a reality.

The Windbelt

There is no doubt that entrepreneurs are changing the world. Shawn Frayne, however, is doing this in a clean energy way. Frayne’s hope is that energy will be harnessed not just on the country side but also in urban environments and cities.

Frayne’s company is the company that designed the Windbelt which is an alternative to a wind turbine and looks similar to a conveyor belt. The design of the product allows for a greater output of energy than the typical wind turbine and has the potential to generate so much more. Founded in Honolulu because of tax credits, then moved to Hong Kong, the company has experienced a lot of change and growth over its lifetime, and it’s future is still unknown.

Frayne stands by the philosophy that everything about this product is new and anything could be possible.
