Good Mythical Morning!

Rhett and Link are a huge YouTube sensation today with thousands of dedicated followers and their own merchandise. This comedic duo has been together since first grade and still remain the best of friends now. What started out as their own website in 2005, Rhett and Link made hilarious videos, usually satirical songs that had perfect harmony and humor. However, when YouTube started, their videos became more viewed. In 2007, the duo gained over 800,000 views in just a few months (a feat that is extremely impressive, considering that this was the really early days of YouTube). This video, The Facebook Song, proved to be their most popular video (now at 17 million views today). In addition to them being one of the first viral videos, they also are one of the few channels that has been around for the entirety of YouTube’s life. Another part of their lucrative business is their daily show, Good Mythical Morning, which is a 20 minute long morning talk show filled with crazy food taste tests and lots of competitions.

What makes Rhett and Link such amazing millennial entrepreneurs is their dedication to their customers, and their desire to keep being creative with their skits. Additionally, they have found a way to create something they love and that pays the bills for them and their families. With that in mind, they also have gained a large fan base, giving them the ability to sell merchandise and write books (both of which fly off the internet shelves). All through the process, they remain humble about their success. With their success, they promise to increase their humor and quality, both of which have definitely improved. Rhett and Link truly are national treasures and deserve recognition for all of their hard work. With classic (and mostly clean) humor, they are a joy to watch and laugh at.

Sixteen and Successful

Billie Eilish is a 16 year old super star. She began her success, at the age of 15, with her debut recording of “Ocean Eyes” on Soundcloud. The single went viral and got over 132 million streams on Spotify in October 2018. Soon after her debut of “Ocean Eyes,” she created an EP called “Don’t Smile at Me” in August 2017. The EP was a success and highlighted her talents for Apple music to see. Apple music named Billie “Up Next” artist of the month in September 2017.

Her first collaboration was with the popular artist Khalid. They created the single “Lovely” which debuted on the soundtrack for the television show “13 Reasons Why.” The two artists have similar styles in music as in no one is quite sure what genre the two fit in. Billie’s songs cover multiple genres, but have a distinct undertone that only Billie can create.

She gained popularity through her extremely unique voice and her crazy sense of style. She also has abstract music videos that can’t help but grab a person’s attention. Billie is known for saying what is on her mind and being very open with her mental health. She incorporates things she struggles with in her lyrics such as depression. Her songs have dark lyrics while having upbeat tones and music. People can easily relate to her because she has kept her humility throughout her busy year.

Her latest single is called “When the Party’s Over” which describes a tough relationship that she dealt with. This single has been reacted to by many YouTubers. A vocal couch YouTuber, Tristan Paredes, reacted to her music video and got nearly 1 million views. The music video itself got almost 34 million views.

Billie Eilish may be only 16, but her popularity and career has taken off over the past year.

Mr. Spotify, Daniel Ek

Spotify, the company with 180 million users worldwide, 83 million of which are paying users, was co-founded by David Ek and Martin Lorentzon. David Ek started his first business at the age of 13 when he began creating websites for his clients from his home. To deal with increased business, Ek recruited his fellow classmates to work on the websites and used video games as compensation for their efforts. By the age of 18, Ek was making around $50,000 per month and managing a team of 25 people. Later in life, Ek was wealthy enough that he decided to retire. Shortly after retirement, Ek realized that money was meaningless if he didn’t have a project he was passionate about to work on. This realization eventually led to the creation of Spotify. After observing the failure of illegal music sharing site Napster, Ek realized that the solution was a music service that was better than piracy but also compensated the music industry. In October 2008, Ek along with Martin Lorentzon launched Spotify as a music streaming service. Now serving as CEO of Spotify, and worth around $2.8 billion, David Ek has been named as the most powerful person in the music industry.

Ek’s entrepreneurial spirit, even at the young age of 13, is truly inspiring. Having the tenacity to eventually earn $50,000 a month by the age of 18 shows that Ek is a highly driven individual with a passion for his areas of operation.

Don’t Let Me Down Music Video

World’s Biggest Videographer

Cole Bennett, a 22 year old videographer and entrepreneur from Chicago, Illinois. Cole started his own YouTube channel called Lyrical Lemonade in September of 2013 with the intent to film music videos for rappers and hip-hop artists. Even in 2013, music videos were very popular and the competition to get a videographer to create a video for an artist was large, but Cole was unique. Cole’s videos were like none other and really allowed viewers to remember artist by their videos. Before Cole’s videos, rappers never really took the music video industry seriously. In the year 2013 alone the top ten music videos consisted of Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Avicii, etc. None of these artists were involved in rap or hip-hop at the time. Rap was still kind of an underground thing for almost all rappers with exception for a few.

After 2010, streaming music started to become increasingly popular. Streaming companies such as Spotify, Pandora, and in Cole’s case, Soundcloud began to take off. Soundcloud was different from the main streaming services. They didn’t really represent major record label artist. Instead they stood for giving underground, unsigned artists a chance at the spotlight. The artists that used Soundcloud to gain fame such as Lil Xan, Lil Skies, and Lil pump became targets for Lyrical Lemonade.

The video that made Cole blow up was “Betrayed” by Lil Xan. This video has over 130 million views and counting and is recognized as the original video that brought fame both to Cole Bennett and Lil Xan. As anyone would have guessed, after that video, artists began chasing after Cole Bennett. Lyrical Lemonade went from the company who produced the music videos to the platform that showcased new and upcoming artist. As of today, Cole as directed over 300 music videos. YouTube has become a media platform to reach out to a huge audience, and Lyrical Lemonade is the brand that represents all the artists. Lyrical Lemonade’s YouTube channel now has over 5.4 million subscribers which basically means anytime Cole decides to post a new music video for a new artist millions of people are going to view it within hours.

Not only has Cole changed the lives of many different artist, but he has completely changed the way rappers become popular. Rappers no longer need to continue to advertise their music, and get people to talk about it. All they need now is a platform such as Lyrical Lemonade that can advertise their music for them, and within minutes their famous. Not only is Cole Bennett an innovative thinker in the way he creates his incredible visuals for music videos, but he is forever a game changer in the entire music industry.

The Quick Rise of Martin Garrix

Martijn Garritsen, better known by his stage name Martin Garrix, has revolutionized the music industry in recent years, specifically the ways in which artists market themselves. In a period of three short years, Garrix went from an unknown DJ and producer to the #1 DJ in the world and a global icon.

Garrix’ career took off in 2013 when he released the club hit “Animals,” a single that jumped to the top of many dance and pop charts in Europe and America. Receiving over one billion views on YouTube to date, this track opened many doors in Garrix’ career, enabling him to work with major artists such as Ed Sheeran, Usher, Avicii, Khalid, and others. Propelling himself into the spotlight at the young age of seventeen allowed Garrix to market himself based on his youth in addition to the strength of his new collaborations. Furthermore, working with mainstream artists created more exposure than Garrix would have gotten from solely doing his live shows.

As he became more popular, Garrix began changing his style to incorporate more elements from pop music, broadening his audience in the process. He started his own record label – STMPD Records – just last year, the mission of the label being to help up and coming artists get their music heard. With a new record label, promised collaborations with more global artists, and his position secure at the top of DJ rankings across the world, Garrix shows no signs of slowing down. In bringing about change in the ways record labels market their younger artists and get them exposure, Martin Garrix transformed the music industry while simultaneously bringing dance music into the mainstream. These effects can be seen in recent years as younger artists are commonly receiving opportunities to collaborate with bigger artists because of the ways in which their management chooses to market their talents. Garrix’ raw talent and business savvy created the perfect storm as he experienced one of the quickest surges in popularity that the music world has ever seen.

We Are the World

We Are the World

By: Daniel Colflesh

Music. What a way to help people. In 1985, a song titled “We Are the World” was born. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (with arrangements by John Barnes) and produced by Quincy Jones. It is one of the fewer than 30 all-time physical singles to have sold at least 10 million copies worldwide. Not to mention, a lot of famous artists (37 artists) were featured on this track, including: Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, John Oates, Daryl Hall, Tina Turner, The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. They all came together to produce this masterpiece of a song that would rake in $63 million (today, $141 million) for the humanitarian aid in Africa and the United States.

The United Support of Artists for Africa is best known for its recording of “We Are the World” and the “Hands Across America” event in 1986. In these 33 years, USA for Africa has raised more than $100,000,000 to help ease the pain an poverty in Africa and the United States. The main goal of this organization is to help people in poverty and give them a chance to have a better life. They have clearly raised a lot of money for the people in Africa and the United States.

One thing that I think is really awesome is that a bunch of different artists came together (regardless of their skin color, religion, or anything biased) and made this song that would impact a lot of people. I think that is is a really amazing thing that people can come together through a common interest (music) and create something that touches so many people’s hearts, minds and emotions. Even though that USA for Africa is essentially a non-profit organization, they have created such a great way to bring revenue to help people in such a positive way. One day, I hope that I can find a way to help people through making music. That would mean so much to me and be one of the best things that I could do. It would bring so much joy and happiness to me and would be a great goal of mine. Hopefully one day, I can help people through music.

A “Seven Nation Army” Could not Hold Jack White Back

Jack White, famous for being the lead singer of the White Stripes, still impacts the world with his music and brilliant mind. Despite the early 2000’s band breaking up, Jack White continues to crank out his own solo albums, one of which he released this year and climbed to the top of the US 200 Billboard. With deep, often strange lyrics, and screeching, distorted guitar melodies, Jack White tops his performances off with color coordinated clothes, instruments, and lights. Along with producing his own albums, he opened up Third Man Records in 2009, a combination of a record store, studio, and concert venue. After opening up another branch of Third Man in Detroit in 2015, White felt inspired to extend it into a large vinyl-pressing factory in 2017 called Third Man Pressing, making it the only place where records can be made-to-order. Ben Blackwell, co-founder of Third Man Pressing and nephew of Jack White, says that “For Detroit to continue moving forward, you need to have different ideas. [Manufacturing] is a field that’s driven by creativity. That’s something this city has always been flush with.”

Jack White, while often considered an acquired taste, is one of the most creative and innovative musicians of this decade.  Not only does he have a creative mind, but also a business-like one. Throughout White’s career, he has faced many struggles and criticisms, but he still held his head up high and worked his way to fame. “There are many people out there who will tell you that you can’t,” White says,”What you’ve got to do is turn around and say, ‘Watch me.'” Jack White’s passion is to turn music back into the raw, emotion-filled expression that it used to be, and no one can get in-between an inspired man and his dream. White not only revolutionized the rock n’ roll industry, but he also demonstrated the flexibility of the title of ‘entrepreneur’. Jack White is a living example of where creativity, hard work, and talent can take a person.

Dubsmash

Dubsmash is a lip synching app where users can pick from multiple soundbites to record themselves with. The video then can be shared to multiple other social media platforms. Roland Grenke, Jonas Druppel, and Daniel Taschik are the inventors of Dubsmash. The creators originated from Germany. The team previously created two failed apps, but Dubsmash was reigned number one in one week in Germany. The team saw the rise of social apps and the music industry, deciding to combine the two. More than 100 million people have downloaded Dubsmash. Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Jimmy Fallon, and Rihanna have even used Dubsmash. Many entertainment outlets like movies, music, and tv shows have been promoted through Dubsmash. In May of 2016, Dubsmash earned six million dollars. Dubsmash’s major competition has been Musically and Snapchat. Sadly, Dubsmash has not stood the test of time. It has faded away despite its success in the app store. It goes to show that applications are big business, but it takes a lot to stay on top.
