TWO FRIENDS- California DJs

Both born in the 90s as hip hop and alternative rock took off, and FRIENDS was the chart-topping show of the decade, two highschoolers interested in music launched their dream together. Eli Sones and Matthew Halper were originally interested in very different forms of music. Halper was focused on alternative rock, guitar, and music theory. Sones took more of a free-flowing approach as a hip hop DJ. Neither of them studied music in college or had much professional training (Halper earned a degree in design from Stanford while Sones graduated from Vanderbilt after studying organization). After graduating from two prestigious schools, Halper and Sones returned home to Los Angeles and pursued music full time.

Operating under a name based on their history together, “Two Friends” launched a new and entertaining style of music. In 2015, they produced hour-long mashups of hit songs, intermixed and altered with their own unique beats. The guys blended humor, nuanced style, and popular party anthems, releasing their “Big Bootie Mixes” on SoundCloud. Gaining millions of fans and becoming viral sensations, Big Bootie Mixes released volume after volume. These ingenious, lengthy productions brought in not only famous songs of all genres, but tongue-in-cheek cameo appearances of famous audio clips, from TV shows like The Office to presidential interviews.

Two Friends are verified and popular Spotify artists doing remixes for big names like Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth, Russel Dickerson, and others. They recently played at Coachella, have garnered a huge following online, and currently possess a net worth of roughly $10 million. You can listen to and learn more about these two highschool producers-turned-entrepreneurial-DJs here.

Billie Eilish, a Genre-Defying Musician

Billie Eilish holding several awards

Billie Eilish wearing one of her odd outfits and holding a trio of trophies.

Billie Eilish began her career in music when she was only fourteen years old, making a splash with the single Ocean Eyes. It was uploaded to SoundCloud to be listened to for free by anyone, and within only a few weeks it had accrued a million plays. Billie Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, rejects many of the standards for what a billboard topping artist can look and sound like. Eilish has a unique sense of style, frequently matching baggy and brightly colored and patterned clothes with large and eccentric jewelry. She is inspired by Pop, Industrial, EDM, and Jazz, among other music genres. The result is something timeless and innovative, what some call a whole new genre. Much of her songs and lyrics which are now trending internationally were first written in her home in collaboration with her brother. (He releases music separately as part of a band called The Slightlys.)

Billie Eilish is a very creative person. Eilish speaks in an interview with Noisey about how she gets many ideas from her strange dreams. She was homeschooled, enjoying horseback riding, dance, and singing. In her youth, she was a fan of Anime, specifically the movie Spirited Away. Billie Eilish has an impressive record when it comes to acclaim, trophies, and awards. She has had her music appear in 13 Reasons Why and Barbie (2023). She is the youngest person to win the Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year awards at the Grammy’s. Though her career has been highly successful, it has not been a very long one. As of yet, Eilish has only released three studio albums over eight years of music making. She’s just twenty-two years old currently, and has the potential to be a mainstay in the Pop music world, continuing to bring new, dark combinations of sound onto the billboard charts. She can be an example to us all that if you pursue your ideas (no matter how strange) with enough passion and vision, you can find an audience. Put yourself out there, and share your ideas!

TRNDSTTRS

Josyah Lavina-Maldonado is the co-founder of TRNDSTTRS. Josyah is a High School student who is a part of a music group that creates rap music and videos. The group is composed of Josyah and his brothers. This group of boys have always shared an interest in music, this accompanied with their interest in having fun and spreading positivity has created something wonderful. These productions give a positive message by talking about the value of friendship and more. To me it is so interesting and fascinating that this group of boys have turned their talents into spreading a positive message for their audience. I think that this innovative way of creating music and spreading a positive message about certain values, is a fantastic way to reach and inspire younger audiences to do something similar. I think that this group of boys have received appropriate attention from companies. I think that they should continue to grow and engaged with a larger audience, especially the youth. By spreading these positive messages and reinforcing certain values, I think it will help the culture for the generations to come. I have also found myself to enjoy their songs and performances. The group is incredibly talented and very entertaining. I am very curious to see what happens with the group as they become adults and are offered even more opportunities. I wonder if they will continue with the trend of positivity or if they will change their material to something else? Regardless, I am sure that this group will continue to thrive and have a positive impact on their audience.

Chris Bridges- AKA Ludacris

American Rapper Chris Bridges, rapper name Ludiacris, although most know for his music, is also an entrepreneur involved in many different businesses. Over ten years ago he started his first restaurant business in Atlanta. To further his business ventures, he also started buying real estate in Atlanta. Many people who only know Ludicrous as a rapper were shocked when they found out that he was going into real estate and the restaurant business. But Ludacris in fact does have a college degree from Georgia state university, which has significantly helped him in his entrepreneurial endeavors.

He is now going back to Georgia state to mentor students and work with professors in the Creative Media Industries Institute. His focus will be teaching students about the entrepreneurial business regarding music and film industries. The program is intended to prepare students for careers that go beyond what normal college degrees prepare someone for.  Atlanta is a perfect place for this because of its large music, film and video game industries located there. Ludacris has always been an inspiring artist to me and it is awesome to know that he has an entrepreneurial side and that he he wants to help future entrepreneurs be successful like he is.

Adam Kluger

In 2008 Adam Kluger looked at the lack of profitability in music in a different light. He wanted to be able to make music more about a brand and less about how many people listened to music.  The music industry was between mediums.  Streaming was not yet popular and the CD was being phased out by digital downloads. Kluger created the “Brand Drop” to increase profitability.

A “Brand Drop” is product placement in musical verses or videos. While artists have always mentioned products or brands in music, Kluger was the first to monetize these promotions in music.

At the beginning of his innovation, Kluger faced some backlash from the industry for his practices possibly violating artistic integrity.  Kluger used the guise of furthering an artists vision as an excuse for his questionable practices.  Kluger provided his services as a middle man to Lady Gaga in her first music video.

While Kluger’s ethics are questionable when it comes to the products and artists he works with we cannot deny his prowess as an entrepreneur. Kluger has hired skit artists involved in videos for musical artists such as Eminem.

Kluger’s innovation makes him a middleman meaning artists have tried to go around Kluger and cut him out of his cut of the transactions.  Kluger was almost cut out of $320,000 during his deal with Britney Spears.

As Kluger’s deal with Spears fell apart, Dannielle Bregoli’s fame began.  Kluger decided to prove his worth through his ability to popularize products or people through the internet.  As soon as Bregolli’s fame had peaked and it seemed that she would fade back into irrelevance Kluger called her and offered to be her manager.  After that Bregolli has exploded as a rapper and personality all incubated by Kluger’s entrepreneurship.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish was born December 18, 2001 in Los Angeles California, was homeschooled, and started singing and writing at a young age. “Ocean Eyes” was the first song Billie recorded and posted on SoundCloud written by her brother. It was originally posted for Billie’s dance instructor to choreograph for her. This song started Billie’s carrier as a singer-songwriter. Now she is a pop artist at the young age of 17 with multiple hits.

Unlike many pop artists Billie Eilish likes to go against the grain, I believe that is one of the things that makes her so appealing to the culture right now. She is very honest with things she deals with, for example depression, and implements that into her music which adds a layer of genuineness. Her style of singing is very unusual, sometimes almost a whisper and other times a very strong voice. She likes to mix a lot of genres into one in her songs which is unique for a pop artist.

Billie Eilish demonstrates entrepreneurship in her thinking outside of the box in her music which has given her a name in the music world. She was the first artist born in the 2000’s to have a number one hit on the Billboard top Hot 100, making history. She is being innovative with her music by combining genres and inspiring others to reach for their dreams and think differently. Billie Eilish is starting the beginning of a change in the music industry today.

Josh Ramsay is a well-known artist and entrepreneur from Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a singer, songwriter, producer, recording engineer, actor and lead vocalist in Marianas Trench. Josh started Marianas trench in 2001 at the age of 20. Josh asked his high school friend Matt Webb, who is now the guitarist, to start a band with him. The four members are still the four members of the band today, who is currently on their Suspending Gravity Tour.
