TWO FRIENDS- California DJs

Both born in the 90s as hip hop and alternative rock took off, and FRIENDS was the chart-topping show of the decade, two highschoolers interested in music launched their dream together. Eli Sones and Matthew Halper were originally interested in very different forms of music. Halper was focused on alternative rock, guitar, and music theory. Sones took more of a free-flowing approach as a hip hop DJ. Neither of them studied music in college or had much professional training (Halper earned a degree in design from Stanford while Sones graduated from Vanderbilt after studying organization). After graduating from two prestigious schools, Halper and Sones returned home to Los Angeles and pursued music full time.

Operating under a name based on their history together, “Two Friends” launched a new and entertaining style of music. In 2015, they produced hour-long mashups of hit songs, intermixed and altered with their own unique beats. The guys blended humor, nuanced style, and popular party anthems, releasing their “Big Bootie Mixes” on SoundCloud. Gaining millions of fans and becoming viral sensations, Big Bootie Mixes released volume after volume. These ingenious, lengthy productions brought in not only famous songs of all genres, but tongue-in-cheek cameo appearances of famous audio clips, from TV shows like The Office to presidential interviews.

Two Friends are verified and popular Spotify artists doing remixes for big names like Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth, Russel Dickerson, and others. They recently played at Coachella, have garnered a huge following online, and currently possess a net worth of roughly $10 million. You can listen to and learn more about these two highschool producers-turned-entrepreneurial-DJs here.

Billie Eilish, a Genre-Defying Musician

Billie Eilish holding several awards

Billie Eilish wearing one of her odd outfits and holding a trio of trophies.

Billie Eilish began her career in music when she was only fourteen years old, making a splash with the single Ocean Eyes. It was uploaded to SoundCloud to be listened to for free by anyone, and within only a few weeks it had accrued a million plays. Billie Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, rejects many of the standards for what a billboard topping artist can look and sound like. Eilish has a unique sense of style, frequently matching baggy and brightly colored and patterned clothes with large and eccentric jewelry. She is inspired by Pop, Industrial, EDM, and Jazz, among other music genres. The result is something timeless and innovative, what some call a whole new genre. Much of her songs and lyrics which are now trending internationally were first written in her home in collaboration with her brother. (He releases music separately as part of a band called The Slightlys.)

Billie Eilish is a very creative person. Eilish speaks in an interview with Noisey about how she gets many ideas from her strange dreams. She was homeschooled, enjoying horseback riding, dance, and singing. In her youth, she was a fan of Anime, specifically the movie Spirited Away. Billie Eilish has an impressive record when it comes to acclaim, trophies, and awards. She has had her music appear in 13 Reasons Why and Barbie (2023). She is the youngest person to win the Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year awards at the Grammy’s. Though her career has been highly successful, it has not been a very long one. As of yet, Eilish has only released three studio albums over eight years of music making. She’s just twenty-two years old currently, and has the potential to be a mainstay in the Pop music world, continuing to bring new, dark combinations of sound onto the billboard charts. She can be an example to us all that if you pursue your ideas (no matter how strange) with enough passion and vision, you can find an audience. Put yourself out there, and share your ideas!

A New Enterprise at an Old Age

So, I’ve spent the past five posts talking about young entrepreneurs, which is—of course—awesome, but to finish off the semester, I want to talk about something different. Young entrepreneurs are great, but in a culture that’s so obsessively focused on youth, I sometimes feel like as I get older, I won’t be able to start learning or doing anything new. Obviously, this is not true, and I found someone to prove it.

I would like you all to meet Noreen Davies, an 84 year old who decided to pick up learning the trombone at age 72. I don’t know about you, but I rarely hear about people learning new skills at age 72. In fact, I often hear that if I haven’t started a skill (whether it be an instrument, sport, or something else) at a young age, I have missed my chance to learn it. So, it was a pleasant surprise for me to learn about someone who decided not to listen to the narrative and pick up a new skill anyway. And not only did Davies pick up a new skill; she got good enough to pick up gigs at local shops with other musicians.

It may not be a business, but the ability to find something you love and make it work for you is surely a foundation of entrepreneurship. You know what they say, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. But the second best time is now!” So go try new things and plant some trees; its not too late!

Les Paul

Les Paul (Lester William Polsfuss) lived in the early nineteen-hundreds. Jazz music started to become increasingly popular at that time, as well as the rise of electric guitar playing. From childhood, Les Paul had taken an interest in music. Apparently, he wasn’t an instant superstar; one music teacher wrote a note to his mom and said, “Your boy, Lester, will never learn music.” This comment proved false – he was eventually playing gigs around the Midwest as a teenager. Along with music, he also loved being inventive and tinkering with things, especially his musical gear. He built a crystal radio at nine years old and at age ten he designed a system to be able to play the harmonica hands free using a coat hanger. Paul wasn’t satisfied with the current state of guitar amplification. When playing live, he wanted his guitar to be louder, so he used his inventive mind and took action. Using a phonograph needle, he wired his guitar to a radio amplifier for a louder volume. His most famous invention was the first ever prototype of a solid body electric guitar. He called it “The Log” because it was made using a solid 4×4 piece of wood that he attached strings and pickups to. In 1941 he presented this model to the guitar company Gibson. Unfortunately, the company had no interest in the product; Les Paul’s invention was ahead of its time. When guitar company Fender’s broadcaster and enquire guitar models started gaining popularity, Gibson finally saw the value in Paul’s invention. In 1952, over a decade after Les Paul presented it, “The Log” was released commercially. It wasn’t “The Log” anymore however, it was new, improved, and now called the Gibson Les Paul. The Gibson Les Paul today is one of the most legendary guitar models of all time.

SoundMind: An App by Travis Chen and Brian Femminella

Travis Chen and Brian Femminella acknowledged how there was a lack of trustworthy mental health resources, and so they decided to come up with an app called SoundMind, which uses music to help reduce anxiety for individuals. Both of these individuals battled immense challenges in their personal lives, and they used them as inspiration to try to provide resources for other people. They created an online environment for people to have crucial mental health resources, and have a sense of community for others who understand the struggles that they are going through. They plan to expand their app even further to allow creators to upload their own sounds, along with commission opportunities.

Sara Kays

Sara Kays is a 21 year old singer/songwriter from Indiana. Currently in college, Sara continues to write music while getting her degree and performing her songs. She started her craft when she was 13, taking an interest in guitar and learning to sing, write, and perform in high school.

After graduating high school, Sara moved to Georgia to grow in her music, and recently moved to Nashville to continue performing and writing. Sara Kays has been publishing her music since 2018, starting with releasing her first song, “Rich Boy”, in October 2018. After releasing that first song, she then released the accompanying album to “Rich Boy”, called “A House Too Big”.

Since 2018, Sara has released 3 singles in 2019, 4 singles in 2020, and an album in 2020. Her social media presence is most well-known on TikTok, but she also has YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter accounts, as well as a website for her merch (https://www.sarakays.com/).

Her music relates to our generation, speaking through the music to those who have been in negative situations and have been affected by those situations. It’s almost like Sara’s way of soothing the hurt many have felt and being a helping hand in her own way.
