Josh Feinsilber: Kahoot, But Different?

Josh Feinsilber is a young teen and 2019 high-school who created the learning site Gimkit, which was inspired by the popular quiz-like learning game, Kahoot. Feinsilber experienced Kahoot and decided to make a different and better type of app that is very personalized and oriented on achieving goals, so as to motivate students. At his small high school in the Seattle area, more weight is put on projects and hands-on activities than grades; he actually developed Gimkit originally as an independent study project. Now, Feinsilber is worth around $400,000 and Gimkit is worth around $23,000. The site has received criticism for its similarities to other apps and that it is subscription-based, but it has also received a lot a praise at the same time for its distinctive features and success: test scores from users have improved more than that of users of other similar platforms such as Kahoot and Quizlet. Also, the personalization aspect where teachers make “kits,” giving rewards when students master concepts and providing educators easy access to data telling student progress. Overall, Feinsilber used his entrepreneurial mindset to take an existing idea and improve it to make a better product for users.

Langston Whitlock’s SafeTrip: Unique, Thriving, & Safe

Langston Whitlock is an 18-year-old Atlanta-native, Georgia State University freshman, longtime coder, drummer, son, and brother. Also, he is cofounder and chief information officer (CIO) of the multi-million dollar company, SafeTrip, which provides ridesharing services for the homeless and elderly in the Atlanta, Georgia area who are in need of reliable transportation to medical appointments and wheelchair compatibility. It all started when Whitlock and Ja’Nese Jean, opera singer, social entrepreneur, philanthropist, and now SafetTrip’s CEO, who had been friendly colleagues in Atlanta for several years, were attending a local event and discovered the problem they would soon solve with SafeTrip. As they were at the community outreach event, Whitlock told Jean that he had heard from a local homeless veteran that many people in the area were unable to make it to important medical appointments due to lack of transportation. Jean replied by asking “Can you make an app for that?”

Whitlock learned how to write code as a young 12-year-old when he created an anonymous messaging app to try and contact his father; at 16 he became the youngest person to be recognized by Forbes Enterprise Technology judges and CIO for the company, meaning he oversees the development team and helps implement sourcing data and new technologies, such as users being able to pay for rides by debit, credit, or insurance. Though everyone else who works for the company is older than him, he says this is no issue at all and it works well; if anything, he says, “They love me cause I’m a kid, I guess.” Additionally, his perspective as a young person has proven valuable: SafeTrip recruits new high school graduates to be drivers for the company in order to further community-connectedness and to help teens who may not have a clear path ahead of them; also, these kids have just recently learned things like defensive driving and CPR at school, so these skills are fresh in their minds.

The app itself launched in 2018 and in 2019 made $3.4 million in revenue; also, it currently has $2 million in funding. Their motivation, besides wanting to better their community and help those in need, is also rooted in that the Atlanta-based company wants to show that the Atlanta technology scene is just as impressive and valuable as Silicon Valley. Additionally, Whitlock is personally committed to providing for his mother and bringing her all the happiness in the world, as a way of repaying her for the work she has put in throughout his life.

Overall, Langston Whitlock is a great example of a young entrepreneur in the 21st century. He and his cofounder saw a problem in their community and, using their existing skillsets and resources as active community members, and building on the typical idea of ridesharing went out and solved a real problem for the greater good.

Something New In Fashion

Growing up, everyone is trying to fit in. From middle school up through adulthood, all everyone is trying to do is fit in and get on top of ever changing new styles. The fashion industry is never lacking with new inspiration. It is hard to stay on top of new trends, clothes, styles that different friends, family, athletes, and celebrities wear. However, as the designer it is difficult to create a style that someone hasn’t seen already. It has to be new, unique, and never seen before.

This young Entrepreneur does exactly that in the fashion industry, and has beenfor the better part of the last two years. Since graduating high school, Demetrius Mackey has started up working on his dream: designing new clothes, fashion, and style for people to wear. Traveling the world, from PA to California, to New York, and even Paris, he has had his product walk the runway in major fashion areas. It has even graced music videos by the likes of Lil Mosey, 6ix9ine, and many more.

Its a new style unique to him. He takes the time to ask people what they want to see on their clothes, rather than just give them something. He then incorporates new trends, and everyday things into his work. He paints, stencils, screen prints, and even draws all on the clothes he produces for people to wear. And they are taking the market by storm, and flying off the shelf.

Getting his product out was hard at first, but then came the word of mouth advertising and he was off and making products for anyone and everyone. He didn’t let the many challenges (bullying, being told no, saying its a women’s industry) to stop him. He kept his head down and worked. Published in many major magazines, in music videos, and gracing runways, this young Pittsburgh artist and stylist has being succeeding and opening new doors.

Jack Kim

Jack Kim is a 25 year old entrepreneur who used his skills to give back to his community. He is one of the co-founders of the search engine Benelab, which generates revenue through ads in order to donate to charitable causes. He has also aided in the creation of several other businesses and is currently the CEO of Ember Labs.

Jack Kim created Benelab while he was still in high school. He began the journey towards the creation of Benelab by gaining profit from websites he was making. He came to the realization that the ads generating revenue on his websites could go towards charitable causes. He then created Benelab, the search engine that donates one-hundred of its proceeds to charitable causes such as donating towards world hunger and medical needs.

Kim then went to study computer science at Stanford and learned even more about the world of technology. He used this knowledge to create Duo AI, which develops advanced Artificial Intelligence systems for households. Duo AI’s website describes the technology as “an AI-powered mirror that you can touch and talk to. Like JARVIS.”

Jack Kim has also started a handful of other businesses. In 2013 he helped to create a business called Visionary Systems which was an emerging intelligent parking solutions provider based in Seoul, Korea. He also was a co-founder of von Hughes, a creative agency and product studio located in New York City. Von Hughes serves to “create viral campaigns like Rumblr and build our own viral products.”

Kim is also the founder and CEO of Ember Labs. Ember Labs is a laboratory dedicated to building new software and hardware businesses. Ember Labs boasts the fact that their products have been featured in over three hundred publications around the world.

Jack Kim has been a very successful entrepreneur at a young age. Through his multiple businesses and successful entrepreneurial ventures, Jack Kim displays that age does not matter in the world of entrepreneurship.

Sustainable Ocean Alliance

The Sustainable Ocean Alliance is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California.  Their main goal is to accelerate solutions for ocean sustainability.  They are seeking to clean the oceans and help bring the importance of ocean health into the public eye.  Since its founding the SOA has raised over 3 million dollars for ocean startups around the world.  It is the type of startup that upon first glance looks like the brain child of a wealthy venture capitalist seeking to use his capital to impact positive change.  However, the SOA started in a much different way and was started by a much different person.

The founder of the SOA is a young lady named Daniela V. Fernandez.  She came up with the idea in her college dorm room while she was studying at Georgetown University.  Fernandez is passionate about the ocean and wanted to come up with a solution for its growing pollution problems.  Since the conception of the idea five years ago the SOA has experienced a large amount of growth.  They now support over 150 startups related to ocean health in 60 different countries.  Fernandez is the young leader of a highly successful social enterprise.

There are a few traits about Fernandez that make her unique and the perfect person for running an organization like the SOA.  The first entrepreneurial traits she possesses is no fear of taking risks.  Few college students sit in their dorm rooms and think they have what it takes to save the oceans.  Fernandez thought she could (and so far she is).  The second trait she possesses is selflessness.  She did not start the SOA because she thought it would make her rich and famous.  She started it because she saw a real need for action before it was too late. Fernandez did not have a desire to make a lot of money but she wanted to start a business that would help millions of people.  The SOA is creating real change in the world’s oceans and it would not be where it is today without Daniela Fernandez.

Max Reisinger: 17 & Living a Dream

Max Reisinger is a 17-year-old from Chapel Hill, North Carolina who is living a life that many teens and adults alike wish they were: one of YouTube and social media fame and successful business ownership. Reisinger currently has over 250,000 YouTube subscribers and nearly 13 million total views on his channel, as well as his own clothing brand, Perspectopia, which is a combination of the words “perspective” and “utopia” and is the basis for what his brand as a whole strives for.

Max’s YouTube channel was the beginning of his career as an entrepreneur and continues to be an integral part of his brand and internet presence. Max’s family lived in France for 7 months while his mother, a French professor, was on sabbatical there; his documentation of parts of this experience, along with his filming and editing skills led to his first big break on YouTube. In May of 2019, his video titled “A Day in the Life at FRENCH PUBLIC SCHOOL” would eventually reach just over 2 million views. His next most viewed video is about his experience coming back to America, in which he describes the “reverse culture shock” felt and provides an overall reflection on his time in France. This uncommon life-experience intrigued many and allowed Max’s talents and personality to shine and made the important initial strides in his YouTube career.

Now, Max mainly uploads vlogs about his life and topics teens and the surrounding demographic can relate to, including videos about his first college visit, time management, or just his average day. Also, he receives paid sponsorships and an overflow of positive comments on his videos as to how he is a true inspiration to his viewers. Max has a joy for life and a unique personality that is entertaining and well-reflected in his skillfully-edited videos — all of which attract new viewers and subscribers every day.

But Max did not stop with YouTube: he wanted to build his brand as an individual and to create a community in which different perspectives and experiences could be brought together in order to support one another and aim for a better tomorrow. Thus, in 2019 he launched the aforementioned Perspectopia. Specializing in embroidered Champion crewnecks, the site also includes t-shirts and various accessories like bucket hats, socks, and stickers, all of which Max designs, makes, and ships from his bedroom. Though still a high school student, brother, son, and friend, Max is a champion of productivity (something he frequently gives tips about on his YouTube and Instagram) and manages to work on his business endeavors for an average of 80-90 hours per week.

Keeping with the brand’s message, Max created an online discussion forum connected with Perspectopia on the popular platform Discord, so that people from anywhere in the world can discuss their lives with and support one another in the context of his brand. Currently, Perspectopia is donating over half of its profits to a Filipino community recovering from a recent typhoon, where a member of the Discord server lives. Perspectopia has been successful thus far because Max has created a brand that is not only original in design and well-made, but is also based on a mission felt by many and appeals to the ethos of a person; by buying his products, his customers can be a part of something greater — whether that be helping those in need, or just embodying the message of trying to continually improve our world.

Overall, Max Reisinger is an excellent representation of what a young entrepreneur looks like, and is perhaps one of the most realistic examples of such because, after watching his videos, he is seen to be a genuine, hard-working person chasing his dream. The combination of Max’s unique and high-quality YouTube and clothing brand with his commitment to making the world a better place is what has made him a success and inspiration thus far.

New Idea – New Oppurtunity

Everyday, someone somewhere has a new idea they want to share. However, very few make it to market, or even make money for you. Getting your idea out there is hard, so hard in fact it is what separates entrepreneurs from dreamers.

It is hard. Ask Gerard Adams, an entrepreneur himself and founder of Elite Daily, how hard it is. He logged many hours into coming up and laying the ground work. He thought this would be the hardest, most time consuming part; however he was wrong, way wrong. His hardest part was taking that idea and publishing it and getting it noticed. It took time, time that he wishes went faster. So after a lot of thought, time, and energy put into one idea, he did what every entrepreneur does: threw it away and started all over. Asia Newson – Super Business Girl

When Asia Newson was just 5 years old, she watched her dad go door to door selling candles in the Detroit area. She decided she wanted to learn to make and sell candles for herself. From a very young age, Asia had an impressive understanding of different business concepts including developing her own sales pitch.

“Hi, I’m Asia Newson, and I’m known as Detroit’s youngest entrepreneur.” This simple pitch caught the attention of many.

Now, eight years later, Asia makes and sells her own candles, and she has expanded her business into one that trains other young entrepreneurs about the basics to owning and running a business. It is called Super Business Girl. On her online store, Asia also sells t-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and bags. The proceeds from both the online store and her training program go to help buy clothes and food for children in need.

Although Asia is a teenager now, she has easily adapted her sales pitch to focus on her training program. Super Business Girl targets middle school and high school students while encouraging entrepreneurial thinking to those who may not have thought about running their own business before.

Asia runs her workshop business under Bamboo Detroit, which is a business incubator for start-ups. One of the owners, Dave Anderson, met Asia while she was selling candles and took her under his wing. He gave her tips to improve her packaging and helped her with business techniques. Asia learned a lot about saving and investing money for her business.

In 2015, Asia made an appearance on Ellen where she talked all about her ambitions and goals as a young entrepreneur and woman in America. This ambition has given her lots of recognition and ultimately has played a huge role in her entrepreneurial success.

Super Business Girl and Other Treps Vow to Save Detroit

How do you Search?

With so much information out there in the world, and everything turning digital, getting the information was hard. And at the start of the World Wide Web, search engines were few and far between; very hard to come by. That did not stop Blake Ross. Many do not know him for his name however, but for what he created: Mozilla FireFox, the search engine.

When people were first starting out the idea of gathering information from the internet was very cool, however, getting the information was a challenge. When the Web first came out, many people stuck to the original base search engine that came with the computer. It was hard to manage and navigate on, and allowed many people to not want to search information online. This gave Ross a great idea, create an easy to use search engine that could be interchanged on many devices – from Apple, to Microsoft, and even Sony – FireFox is a staple when it comes to search engines. It is very easy to use and has eliminated headaches of users.

The Mozilla FireFox search engine was released when Ross was only 19. He goes to show that you do not have to be from money, or even out of your teenage years to make a major life impact on the world. He took an idea, matched it to a problem and got to work. He establish, what today is considered a leading search engine, for computers all over the world, and released it at only 19. He is the definition of entrepreneur. He took an every day problem and created a solution.

Anna Sitar: A Brand of Positive Encouragement

 

Anna Sitar is a social media influencer who’s main focus is to spread positivity and joy. She is active on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and has a website to sell some merchandise like t-shirts and sweatshirts with quotes specific to her personal brand on them. Not quite an influencer, Anna still manages to pull many viewers through her wholesome content. She recommends different brands all the time, and is real about her experiences with her followers.

Her big debut came with her Poland travel blog that she posted on YouTube. Then, once TikTok became popular in the States, Anna started a TikTok account. Her content shows that she is a good-natured, encouraging, kind, and humorous person. Two catch phrases Anna is known for are: “I don’t want it” and “get with it.” Either one is a common phrase in her TikToks.

Although Anna does not have a lot of products to sell and grow as a business, she is cultivating a brand that reaches much further than products. Her clean content and positive outlook help her followers believe in the good that is in the world. Anna Sitar is an encouragement all around, and her entrepreneurial mindset is taking her places.

Her website states her philosophy quite simply: “There is no such thing as an unrealistic standard. This brand represents the fighters, the lovers, and the humans who know what they want, and will not rest until it is achieved. If you don’t believe in us, we don’t want it.” It’s an honest and beautiful brand that can cheer anyone up.
