Young Entrepreneurs: Ashley Qualls

Ashley Qualls is a bit of a throwback for me – she built her business in the MySpace days. Though I personally have no experience with the platform (and I suggest most people my age don’t either) I think that her idea is certainly adaptable to the current social media landscape.

Ashley received a lot of positive feedback for her MySpace page designs. People loved her work and creativity. She decided to make these MySpace page designs available for purchase. Apparently people truly did like her designs because they sold well – to the tune of over $70,000 a month in revenue!

There is certainly a lesson to be learned here: when people compliment you on something that you’ve created, it just might be a business idea. Ashley certainly thought so. She figured that if people liked her designs enough to compliment her, they might be willing to pay a few dollars for one of them.

The other great lesson from Ashley’s business is that the digital world offers some amazing business opportunities design-wise. After all, once a template is put together it can be sold an infinite number of times with little work and additional input from its creator. This allowed Ashley more time to focus on designing new templates and ideas instead of having to keep creating the same product again and again.

In fact, Ashley decided to drop out of school to devote more time to her business. This is another great lesson that can be learned from her story – entrepreneurs have to make sacrifices. While Ashley probably would have loved to have finished school she realized that she had a serious business and that if she continued to stay in school it would be at the cost of her business. Sometimes as an entrepreneur, difficult decisions have to be made.

In conclusion, Ashley had a great idea and capitalized on it in a way that was flexible and extremely profitable. However, she had to make some sacrifices in the process.

The Bridge to Success

Social media has been building bridges to new ways of innovation and entrepreneurship ever since it began. Those who have capitalized on it when it began, however, are the ones making all the money and gaining the most fame. Felix Kjellberg, or better known to some as “Pewdiepie,” created his youtube account only one year after the website was released. It wasn’t until 2011, though, that he began to post on what would become the largest account on the platform ever (owned by one person). He began by posting quite short and relatively boring videos on his account purely for the entertainment of his friends and himself. As time went on, more people began to find his account, subscribing to it, and Felix’s fanbase grew. Less than a year later he had surpassed the 1 million subscriber mark. He began to post more and more and only a year after that was at 10 million. It was safe to say that he was on the right track.

Pewdiepie began to create merch such as shirts, chairs, headsets, and eventually his own game on the app store. He was rapidly gaining fans and in the spring of 2019, the creator finally reached an astonishing 100 million followers, which meant that 1 in 15 people who used youtube was subscribed to his account. This may not seem like much, however, almost half of the country uses this platform. He is still creating to this day and after selling many products and featuring in other videos and ads, he has accumulated roughly a cool $45,000,000 from online interactions alone. Felix will forever be remembered in the industry of videomaking and for revolutionizing the world by his assistance in bridging the gap between the real and digital worlds of entrepreneurship.

The brains behind Clicks Talent

Abraham Lieberman a veteran for the Israeli military used his time when not in service to start working on his dreams. He took advantage of the rising need for social media consultants amongst US companies and used that to start up his business, Clicks Talent. He saw the pain of many influencers that they might not have even realized or noticed. These influencers weren’t using their full talent in the ability to push and promote social media apps. While he was originally from Israel he knew that there was an open market in the US and took a break from his college education to pursue this opportunity. Abraham was very quick to see that new apps needed big name influencers and creators to promote their apps. He continues to diversify his company and pivot as new apps come out reaching those apps with different influencers that related to those apps. Abraham has really taken advantage of the rise in short-form videos such as Tik Tok and other apps that are now adding these videos into their portfolio. He has now expanded his company into a global powerhouse now reaching a variety of countries and apps within those countries. He believes that diversifying oneself in cultures allows them to grow and thrive in the current marketplace. A key aspect that I took from this article is Abraham’s emphasis of collaborating with people that have more experience than you and will be able to open your mind to different ideas. Personally, Abraham inspires me to think outside the normal box of products or services and to look for areas in the marketplace that no one has thought of or looked for. I think that using social media in the current time period is something that I took from this. I believe that social media will continue to open more and more areas of opportunity in the marketplace of the future.

Jacob Landis-Eigsti- Jacob LE Video Production

Jacob Landis-Eigsti is the founder of Jacob LE Video Production which helps companies gain new marketing and video production clients. He has run his own business for 10 years now and is very successful. Jacob says he started this business because he saw many businesses struggling to tell their story and connect with others online. He wanted to use his marketing and video production skills to help other businesses.

Jacob’s business is very innovative because he uses the internet to communicate with people on how to grow their business through video. I found it unique that his goal is to teach people how to market their businesses better, instead of only trying to make his business the best. He is very selfless in this sense.

Jacob says he starts off each day by making a to-do list with three things he wants to get accomplished for the day. He also turns his phone off for 90-minute blocks in order to get tasks done without getting distracted. Techniques like these demonstrate a focused business person. He also said a success strategy of his is to always follow up with a client or business partner you’ve been talking to. This allows for closure or further conversation with peers.

Facebook, Instagram, and online video advertising are some of the things Jacob focuses on helping people with in his business. We are becoming more and more dependent on social media every day, so I think it was very innovative of Jacob to incorporate this into his business. If people are unsure how to market themselves online, it could be the downfall to their business. Jacob LE Video Production is an easy solution to help small/medium businesses with these advertising techniques.

Being a marketing major, Jacob Landis-Eigsti specifically inspires me to grow in my marketing knowledge so that I can eventually help people in the way that he does. In an interview with Carlyn Runnels he states, “Also, learn business skills first as an entrepreneur. It’s important to be good at your craft, but business skills and sales skills are incredibly important.” This inspires me to learn the basic business skills first, because this will set the foundation for being able to help people with all kinds of businesses, like Jacob does.

Below is a series of blog posts Jacob has posted on a site called Medium in order to assist with marketing, social media and video strategies.

The Social Shells

In 2015 Nadine, from Switzerland, was working a 9 to 5 desk job feeling completely miserable. At the same time, she was just finishing her undergrad—but to Nadine this felt pointless. What exactly was she studying and working towards? To work longer and harder hours at a different desk job that she would not enjoy? This is why Nadine made a change.

A week after completing her undergrad, Nadine decided to take off and travel for a few months where she eventually landed in Bali. Her family urged her to come back to Switzerland to continue living “real life” and get a steady job. In Bali, she saw others working completely from their computers and creating their own working schedules, so Nadine starting searching for ways she could do the same!

With her determination, Nadine started building her own social media management business. She took online classes, read countless books, reached out to many people to network, and learned how to create a successful brand. As she started gaining clients, her business grew—she began making more money than she had at her 9 to 5 job! Nadine was able to work around her own schedule and continue to travel, all while doing something she was truly passionate about!

Now, Nadine still works as a social media manager, but she also teaches other women how to do the same through her mentorship program, The Social Shells. Because Nadine had to start her business from scratch without any sort of mentor, she created the Social Shells in order to help others who are in the same position that she once was a few years ago.

“I believe in community over competition and want to help as many women as possible to live their dream life! Instead of making the same mistakes as I did, you can take the shortcut and learn the direct path to freedom!”

Nadine continues to grow her business all while living her absolute dream life!

Socially Marketable

For most teenagers, social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. They use it to stay connected with friends and gather information about the world. While these platforms can be used in a wide variety of ways, many of these teens have gained an in-depth knowledge of how Social Media works and how people interact within each platform. This skill is so common among the younger generation that few seem to understand the importance and significance of this intellectual skill. Iman Gadzhi was one of these ordinary teenagers until he discovered how to capitalize off of his social media knowledge.

Iman Gadzhi was a 17 year old boy raised by his single mother. As Iman grew older he realized that he would have to find a way to support him and his mom. As a result, he quickly adopted an entrepreneurial mind and started several businesses which all ended in failure. It wasn’t until he offered to run his club soccer team’s and was offered to be paid that Gadzhi saw how he could make money with his current skill set of social media. This revelation gave Iman Gadzhi all the information to pursue a career in Social Media Marketing (SMM). He set a goal that if he could reach a certain monthly income, he would drop out of high school. After weeks of hard work, Iman landed two major clients and his dream was finally realized. He dropped out of high school and placed all his time and energy into this new business venture.

While scaling his business could have easily been the final continual step in this process, Gadzhi came thought of something more incredible. If he, a normal teenager could use the skills that almost every teenager has to build a business that could support his dream life, why couldn’t others do it too? This is what ultimately strengthened Iman Gadzhi in this industry. While he could have chosen to focus on a singular problem and keep his ideas to himself, Iman chose to start a SMM course to teach other people like himself how to create a business in this arena. Now we fast-forward several years and Gadzhi has cemented himself as a thought leader in Social Media Marketing and has taught thousands of people how they can become financially secure as well as entrepreneurially minded.

Think you are too busy to start a side-hustle? It is not worth it right? It could be rewarding but it will never pay off may be the answer to that. What if I told you the side0hustler could turn into a £10million business. Oh the sticker shock may not be in pounds, so how about 13,115,500.00 in US Dollars! All this from a side-hustle that started in a family kitchen 2 years ago.

Hannah Chapman, 25, worked a job dealing with social media two years ago, started melting wax at the age of 23 and it just took off. She started advertising on Instagram her candles and before she knew it she quit her day job to focus solely on making these candles. Chapman credits social media for her success, as without it she would not have the customer base she has today. She says, “That’s the beauty of social media – there are ways of leveraging it that don’t necessarily require money and I think that’s what makes it so exciting for budding companies and young entrepreneurs, it really levels the playing field.”

On top of all that, she is able to employ her dad as a worker in her supply chain. The business itself does not just rely on candle sales, also having wax melts, bath bombs, room sprays and other handmade items. Anna Sitar is a social media influencer who’s main focus is to spread positivity and joy. She is active on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and has a website to sell some merchandise like t-shirts and sweatshirts with quotes specific to her personal brand on them. Not quite an influencer, Anna still manages to pull many viewers through her wholesome content. She recommends different brands all the time, and is real about her experiences with her followers.

Travis Scott: Rapper, Designer, MCDONALDS ORDER?

Travis’ Background

When most people hear the name Travis Scott, they think of the 29 year old rapper who is one of the most popular artists today.  Although Travis is most well known for his music, he is also one of the most influential designers and marketing influencers in todays culture.

Designing a shoe Empire.

Travis Scott has been extremely successful in the music industry for the last few years.  He has produced numerous hit songs and albums, and created a large following for himself.  This success quickly drove him to innovate in ways that didn’t involve only music.  Travis has a passion for collecting shoes, especially high demand shoes that not everyone can get their hands on.  This passion for shoes influenced Travis to go out on his own and begin designing his own line of shoes.  In 2017, Travis signed a deal with Nike to begin designing his own styles on many of Nikes popular shoes. For the past three years, Travis has designed numerous shoes that instantly sell out as soon as they hit the market. Travis stands out from other competitors, because his shoes are unique to himself and his design.  He produces limited amounts of shoes, which drives his fan base to try as hard as they can to purchase these shoes before they sell out.  These shoes are in such high demand, that fans have paid as much as $3,000 on the secondary market to get their hands on a pair.  His design success has lead him to begin producing clothing items as well, which continue to be successful each time they are released.

Marketing Influence

This fall, Travis signed a deal with Mcdonalds to market a “Travis Scott meal” for a limited amount of time.  This meal was available throughout the month of September, and it was certainly a success.  Fans throughout the world purchased this meal, and loved the idea of being able to eat Travis’ favorite burger from Mcdonalds.  Social media was a huge influence on the success of the Travis Scott meal, as thousands of fans posted pictures and videos with the limited time offer.

Innovating through a pandemic

This past summer, Travis was unable to perform concerts due to the Covid 19 restrictions.  His entrepreneurial mindset allowed him to innovate in a way that would still allow him to connect his music to his fans.  Travis partnered with the popular video game, Fortnite, and performed virtual concerts on the platform.  In these “concerts”, Travis was depicted as a character in the game as his songs were played for fans.  This was a huge hit across the globe, as thousands of fans tuned in to catch a glimpse of their favorite artists during the pandemic.  This innovation allowed Travis to stand out from other artists who also couldn’t perform during the pandemic.  Although he could’t perform in person, he found a way to still connect with his fanbase and build his following.

My takeaway

Travis Scott has certainly inspired thousands of fans across the world.  I personally find it very inspiring that someone at such a young age has already found ways to innovate and become a successful entrepreneur.  Not only has Travis found success in the music industry, but he also ventured into other markets and quickly took over.  His drive for innovation in challenging times is very inspirational.
