Sofia Overton – Success In Her Pockets

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket Products

At age 11, Sofia Overton started her company Wise Pocket Products because she wanted to help children who are active as well as those who are in need. She realized there was a lack of pocket space when she saw her cousin put her phone in her sock. After trying this for herself, she spotted the inefficiency of this method and wanted to fix this problem. She decided to make socks with pockets in them. After finding success with this product, she has decided to expand her business to sell leggings as well.

Overton, recognizing there are millions of children in need, wanted the core of her business’ mission to help children. For every pair of socks sold by Wise Pocket Products, a pair is donated to children in need. “Wise Pocket Products believes that if you make sure a child has warm feet they will always have a warm heart knowing that their community cares for them.” (Overton)

Overton saw the problems of lack of pocket space and also children who were in need. She fixed both of these issues with one solution. Overton is not only making a profit but is also giving people an opportunity to make a difference in their communities. For these reasons, it is clear to see her entrepreneurial gifts.

Are You Kidding Socks

For Brandon Martinez (14 years old) and his brother Sebastian (12 years old), age is simply a number when it comes to business. The two brothers started their sock company in 2014 as they sought to start a non-profit to live out their passion: designing and selling socks while supporting national and local charities. Hence, the mantra of these boy’s non-profit: “kids helping kids.” The boys are quite intentional about shaping their business so that communities are impacted by their model of charity. With each pair of socks that one buys, one sock is donated to a charity. The business partners with a list of nine non-profits.

 

One of the parts I love most about this business is the design of the socks. They consist of youthful patterns which are certainly attractive to kids. Furthermore, some of the socks have designs of certain charities printed on them which create awareness of the charity when worn and 30% of the sock profit is donated to that charity. As the quote of Brandon Martinez suggests, the two business kids are all about improving the world. Christian or not, these boys are serving others through ingenuity. In addition, they did not let their youthful status stop them from pursuing their dreams. What an entrepreneurial spirit the two possess! The two boys have contributed over $300,000 in charitable contributions; located on their website, they claim the main focus of the business to be donating socks to kids in foster care, the homeless, and those affected by natural disasters.

The business does a great job at marketing their product well too; they know the desires of their audience. For example, the business acknowledges that more than nine in ten millennials would purchase a product associated with a cause. I admire these kids as they obviously discerned a common passion and implemented a business that first and foremost focuses on others.

Brandon & Sebastian Martinez – Are You Kidding Socks

In 2014, 9-year-old Brandon and 7-year-old Sebastian Martinez founded Are You Kidding Socks, a sock company with a unique twist. The two kid entrepreneurs design and sell socks with unique, exciting designs. It all started with Sebastian, who loved wacky socks. By the time he was five, his grandmother had bought him over 100 pairs of colorful, fun pairs of socks. Sebastian’s mother remembers the very day she asked him, “Would you like to design your own socks?” On that day, June 25, 2013, Sebastian enthusiastically said yes.

Later that year, Sebastian began designing socks while his mother connected with a manufacturer in Guatemala to produce the designs. By 2014, Are You Kidding Socks was an established company, selling thousands of socks from the Martinez home. Sebastian was the CEO of the company, while his mother was the president. They brought on Sebastian’s older brother, Brandon, as the sales rep – due to his vibrant, outgoing personality. He was later promoted to the “Director of Sales” by his younger brother.

In recent year, the Martinez boys have made it their mission to raise awareness for national charities and organizations. Through the sales of their socks, they have raised thousands for nonprofits, such as Live Like Bella, SLAM ALS, Autism Speaks, and the American Cancer Society. They have designed specific socks that represent each cause they support.

The Martinez boys also care very deeply about local communities. They donate their time, resources, and socks to local schools and shelters during annual fundraisers and events. They also partner with local schools to host fundraisers and campaigns.

Since forming the company, the boys have received great recognition, from the mayor of Miami to interviews on CNN and Good Morning America. Sebastian and Brandon have taken a fun, simple idea and turned it into something very impactful.

Bombas – More Than Just Socks

A common irritant in one’s daily life is socks.  While it might not be your first thought for what irritates you, many people dislike it when their socks fall down, do not provide support, cause blisters, make your feet hot, or maybe worst of all, the irritating seam that goes across the toe of socks that never seems to be in the right place at the right time.

As it turns out, in 2013, David Heath and Randy Goldberg were irritated enough with these problems that they started a company called Bombas.  Heath and Goldberg were regular consumers, knowing nothing about the in’s and out’s of the sock industry, but what they did know was their own pain points.  They set out to achieve two goals:  design the best sock in the history of feet, and give a pair of socks to a homeless shelter with every purchase.  By targeting their own pain points, they developed unique socks.

The socks are all contoured to either a left or right foot.  The ankle socks have a blister tab, calf-length socks have “stay-up technology” that actually works, and their no-show socks use stay-put heel grips and contour seam construction to stay where they are supposed to.  All of the styles incorporate the company’s now signature honeycomb across the mid-foot to provide addition support, a y-stitched heel to cup the heel of your foot, and a reinforced foot-bed to be longer lasting and more supportive.  Health and Goldberg now have several different styles and lines of socks including dress socks, compression socks, wool socks, quarter socks, and athletic socks, as well as the standard crew, ankle, and knee high socks.

To Heath and Goldberg’s second goal, they realized that the number one most requested item from homeless shelters was socks, due to the necessity that they be new.  They developed a one-for-one business model and now for ever pair of socks you buy, they donate a brand new pair to a homeless shelter in need.

In 2014, Heath and Goldberg took Bombas to Shark Tank.  They were successful in getting a deal with Daymon John, and officially launch the company.  Heath and Goldberg hoped to give away one million socks by 2025 but in fact, they met that goal in only two and a half years, and a mere six months later, they had given away two million pairs.  At the time this post was written, according to the live counter on the Bombas website, they have donated 27,811,296 pairs of socks.

Bombas is an example of two regular guys, seeing a pain in their own lives and finding a way to solve it.  Not only have they created what are arguably the best socks in history, but they have also found a way to make a huge impact in the lives of many people who are in need of an item most of us take for granted:  socks.

 

Are You Kidding?… nope not kidding

Socks. We all wear them (or at least we all should) and most are pretty boring. White tube socks are basically the sock equivalent of white rice. Who would want to eat white rice and ONLY white rice everyday? Likewise, who would want to wear only white, black, or brown socks day in and day out? Brandon and Sebastian Martinez grew tired of boring socks and decided to do something about it. Brandon, at the age of 5, began to design his own line of zany, wacky socks with his older brother Sebastian helping him to sell them. From their humble beginnings to generating $15,ooo in 2014, Are You Kidding and these two brothers have come a long way. But crazy socks and even crazier profits aren’t the only amazing thing about this young sock company, they also give back. Are You Kidding They have partnered with a multitude of charities which include: Autism Speaks, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics Florida, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, and The Live Like Bella Foundation. With a healthy business and the rest of their lives to continue to grow it, the sky is truly the limit for these peewee entrepreneurs!

Custom Sock Designer and CEO

An ambitious high school student took notice of a popular trend of plain Nike socks at basketball games. He wondered how such a simple design gained such popularity. What if he could build of the popularity of simple socks, design custom ones and build a brand for it. What if crazy designs could build off the already established popularity of “simple” socks?

The now 18-year old, Brennan Agranoff has advanced his idea into a brand, earning over $1 million annually. His company, “HoopSwagg” now ships 70 to 100 orders a day! With custom designs ranging from superhero themes, to food items, to crazy color combinations, HoopSwagg’s socks are quite popular on the market.

With a loan from his parents, Brennan began printing on his own colors on socks with heat pressing machines. He was finally seeing his idea materialize. After the first year, sales were slow and nothing impressive. Brennan then had to solve a way to advertise his product. Heading to social media with his unique product, it was a short matter of time to pick up popularity from a sizeable audience.

Now with a warehouse, a website and over ten part-time employees, HoopSwagg is continuing to grow. Agranoff hopes to send HoopSwagg mainstream through retail stores. Agranoff also intends to expand his line of products in the future with custom shoe laces, and other custom designed basketball gear.

Brennan Agranoff, who is still in high school, is a perfect example of ambition in accomplishment. A young boy who decided to act on his simple idea, discovered the big market within retail and customization. By teaching himself skills such as web and graphic design, his ambition continues to only lift the company to more possibilities.

ARE YOU KIDDING: 7 Year old Raises Money for Cancer

Many seven year olds stay parked in front of the television for hours watching cartoons.  However, this is not the case for Sebastian Martinez.  Sebastian is the CEO of his own company called Are you kidding, which raises money for organizations such as the American Cancer Society.  It all started with his passion for unique and funky socks.  This idea sparked a business that continues to grow, surpassing $15,000 in January of 2015.  Since then, Socks by Sebastian has continued to grow and sell from their website.  Sebastian and his brother use their creative socks to raise funds for local and national charities. Now at the young age of eight and ten, these two brothers use their creativity and hard earned money for others. They run their company and make significant incomes, money that any young kid would happily spend on themselves.  Yet, they both forgo splurging on material goods and donate to kids with autism and cancer.

No matter the age, a simple idea can make a huge and lasting impact on the community.  Anyone who is interested in these two young entrepreneurs can either purchase socks, get their school involved in the company, donate, or volunteer to one of Are You Kidding’s partner organizations.
