HANDSHAKE – the story behind these CSO emails we get so often.

Handshake Logo

Whether you’re a Freshman or a Senior, you are definitely used to getting emails from the Career Service Office badgering you to sign up for Handshake. What’s so special about this company Grove City partners with?

Handshake’s mission is pretty relevant to anyone in this class since their expressed purpose is to help all students find meaningful careers.

This mission stems from their belief that talent is distributed evenly but opportunity is not. This problem frustrated Garrett Lord and a few of his classmates back in 2013, so they set out on a road trip to interview other college students frustrated by the unlevel playing field.  Their hypothesis was confirmed by these inquiries and today they’ve accumulated $34 million dollars since moving their offices to San Francisco.

Today Handshake connects 300k+ employers with 14 million+ students.

Even in the age of LinkedIn’s dominance, a young entrepreneur was able to design a solution to a problem he saw in the way people like him looked for the work they would find meaningful.

Teal Drones: World’s Fastest Commercial Drone

George Matus was only 12 years old when he created his own flying quadcopter. As he got older he became frustrated with the drone options that were on the market. They were restrictive for they were either only racing or only for taking pictures and video. So, he created his own “wish list” of things that he wanted in a drone and went to work making prototypes. After dozens of versions of drones and hours of test flying and crashing he was able to create his dream drone at the age of 16. The drone is capable of flying faster than 70 mph and can withstand wind of up to 40 mph. The product is yet to be released but Matus has plans to release the drone next year with a starting price of $1,300. To date, Teal Drones has raised over $3 million in fundraising and has an extremely bright future ahead.

Facebook Founder

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook is one of the worlds youngest billionaires. It all started when he was 12 years old. He created a program for his fathers dental practice, he also created online games for himself and his friends. As Zuckerberg’s interest in computers continued to increase, his parents hired a private computer tutor. Zuckerberg often outperformed the computer tutor. Zuckerberg decided to take his programming to the next level and developed the early version of Pandora. As young Zuckerberg was developing this, he had many job offers from Microsoft and AOL, but denied all of them. Zuckerberg started working on the social media website, Facebook, in his college dorm room at Harvard. Two years onto college, Zuckerberg dropped out to focus on completing Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg is a very successful young entrepreneur and has very many entrepreneurial traits. One trait that is clearly visible in Zuckerberg’s upcoming is his ability and desire to take risks. One instance that shows this is that Zuckerberg dropped out of college to pursue what he was trying to accomplish. Risk Taking is easily one of the biggest traits that create a successful entrepreneur. Zuckerberg is also determined, he was very determined to persevere with his company and wouldn’t let anything stop him. This is also shown when Zuckerberg dropped out of college, not even himself furthering his education got in the way of his dream. Zuckerberg wanted to do things the way he wanted it and wasn’t afraid to tell other people no, he denied many contracts and didn’t want any help besides the men he was already working with. Zuckerberg is very inspiring and shows what is taken to follow dreams from a young age and still shows what it takes to run a successful company.

Mixpanel

Suhail Doshi has created a successful data provision company called Mixpanel. Initially Doshi saw his career reaching its peak at a $90,000 software engineer job for Intel. This quickly changed when he threw out the old Steve Job’s notion that companies know interface design better than the consumer. Mixpanel provides an assortment of consumer behavior analytics to BMW, OpenTable, and Intuit. Doshi started the company at the age of 20 in 2009 and quickly achieved $40 million in revenue. During his internship at Slide, he realized the usefulness of in-house analytics and was inspired to create his own company. Doshi observed other companies like Zynga working on analytics software and knew he had to act fast in order to keep up with competition like google analytics. The first few years were very challenging, but fortunately they were able to make it into the acclaimed startup accelerator, Y Combinator, and gain recognition. Gaining venture capital was also very difficult during the recession with only two of 13 venture capitalist willing to invest. Mixpanel has come a long way since then. Data products now guide design at silicon valley and the company employs 300 people with $77 million raised to date. Doshi says there is a constant need to evolve and that a 10 year old company is a whole different beast than a start-up. Teams must work together and be willing to adapt to new, creative solutions.

Military to Millionaire

Alex Becker, a serial entrepreneur who has generated tens of millions throughout his career, began in the air force at the age of 19. He served for four years and got out when he was 23. The way he puts it, “I became an entrepreneur because I truly did not have any other option.” His desire to generate wealth superseded the status quo of working a 9-5 job, which is the path that many veterans pursued after returning home. Becker went on to create Spekter Labs, which deals with human enhancement and Market Hero, which helps businesses grow through streamlined data. He has also gone on to write several best selling books and training programs. Alex is currently running his own YouTube channel, Instagram page, and Facebook account to help boost his personal brand. He is only 30 years old, but has made a name for himself in business and social media by directing his “never give up” mentality that he used in the military into his career and passion.

Discord, the Gamer’s Platform

Stanislav Vishnevskiy, co-founder of Discord

There a lot of people that play video games in the world. That number is estimated to be around 2.5 billion and rapidly climbing. That is a lot of people, and those people want to connect with others just them. In comes Discord, a platform for the gamers of the world. Discord was created by Stanislav Vishnevskiy and his business partner Jason Citron. Discord is a cloud-based server farm that allows any of its users to create servers for means of communication between them and any members of the server.

Discord was also built on the foundation that customizability is key. Servers can have scripts and bots written into the servers that can auto-reply, auto-post, all those sorts of things. You think it, odds are a Discord server can take care of it. Granted many of these automatic bots are written by high knowledge programmers, but that also gives them an outlet to experiment in their own time. Discord has heavily disrupted the gaming communication industry. Beforehand many people used services like Skype or TeamSpeak, but with Discord the perfect match of lightweight, user-friendly program meets super reliable communication service. The service really has started to revolutionize the way gamers communicate and get to know others. Some users have even gone as far to say that it is the equivalent of Facebook for gamers, the perfect service that meets all their needs and connects with new people from around the world.

Vishnevskiy and Citron really took advantage of a specific niche. Gamers that wanted to communicate with each other, but did not have a well-put together service that allowed them to do just that. Discord today has over 90 million registered users from just the meager 10 they started out with as a test run. Vishnevskiy and Citron continue to push Discord further than ever and who knows what the service will be able to provide next? Discord has been a true example of a disruptive force upon an industry that seemed to have all its players set in stone.

The Billion-Dollar Basement Startup

Beginning his career in IT consulting, Carl Rodrigues quit his sound job in 2001 with a mission to innovate something extraordinary. It is said that Rodrigues quit his job without any real idea. A risky move for someone who had relatively little savings. After a month, Rodrigues created a software platform which integrated the use of your mobile phone from your laptop.

This is a very useful platform for business professionals who work on their computers all day but might have their assistant answer calls during the day. It allows for the executives, per say, to control their phone from their computer. Rodrigues named his company Soti. His first twelve months were slow, according to the BBC article. Today, Soti is valued at over $1 billion. Rodrigues’ success is a tribute to hard work, dedication, and the willingness to believe in himself despite what others say.
