Jessica Pegula: Ready 24

Jessica Pegula is a tennis player ranked 24 among WTA players.  She has played tennis since she was ten and struggled with skincare.  She tried so many products and could not find one that fit her.  Plus, her skin was struggling because there was too much going on.  She needed something that was for athletes, clean, and simple.  This led her to create her own skincare line.  Pegula had hip surgery and lots of time in her recovery.  In her downtime, she formed Ready 24.

Ready 24 has four lines: cleansers, essence water, moisturizer, and recovery skin products.  She worked with a company in her hometown and used focus groups to formulate, test, and refine her products.  She uses her own products and so do other tennis players!  She got Ready 24 into Wegmans, online, social media, and at tennis events.

Pegula said that it really hit her that she was really starting a business when she was making the labels for the products one day.  She told

Ready 24 | Happy birthday to our amazing founder Jessie! Send her some love in the comments 🩵🎉 #jessicapegula #femalefounded #womeninbusiness… | InstagramHologic WTA Tour, “I was thinking to myself, `This is so weird. I can’t believe I’m writing a label for people to use.’ It was so hands-on. Honestly, it was really pretty cool.”

Jessia Pegula’s parents also inspired and helped her.  They helped to provide the initial investment and continually offer feedback and ideas.  He dad is always full of ideas, and her mom knows how to make it a reality and take risks.

Pegula is driven by her own experiences.  Her story is similar to mine because I too had hip surgery and played tennis.  It is so hard to find the good in the midst of recovery.  Her life was tennis, and she could have been wallowing in her own self-pity, but instead she found a need and addressed it.  She used what was in front of her

as an opportunity.

Rachel Zietz: Gladiator Lacrosse

When Rachel Zietz was practicing for lacrosse, the net of the rebounder she was using broke. The net was ruined by a giant hole made from the ball. Rachel acted on this problem and created a more durable rebounder by expanding the thickness of the net and the steel bars. She did this at the age of just 13-years-old.

Rachel participated in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy Program. This gave her the idea to start a business which would provide quality lacrosse equipment at an affordable price. This is how Gladiator Lacrosse was invented. She built her ideas off her passion and love for the game of lacrosse. That is why each product is made thoughtfully. In addition, she is personally involved with the product concept and selection of raw materials to ensure the best quality possible. You can now purchase a variety of products from the Gladiator Lacrosse website. What sets her business apart from other competitors, is the strong materials used to make the equipment last. Her brand has flourished and are now proud partners with Amazon.

Her love for the game is what truly helped her business ideas to grow. She saw a problem and was determined enough to find a solution.

(LEFT SIDE – Arnold Schwarzenegger, RIGHT SIDE – Chris Bumstead)

Born in 1995, Chris Bumstead, better known as “CBum,” is a Canadian bodybuilder and social media influencer who has quickly become one of the most recognized figures in the fitness world. Best known for winning the Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title four consecutive times (2019–2023), Bumstead has solidified his position at the top of the bodybuilding elite. Starting his competitive journey at just 19, his natural talent and relentless dedication quickly set him apart, earning him comparisons to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Like Arnold, however, CBum’s influence extends far beyond the bodybuilding stage.

Fitness is a notoriously difficult industry to breakthrough. The competition is high with established and professional athletes with pre-existing followings. Specialized diets, supplements, training programs, and competition fees can create financial barriers for aspiring bodybuilders. Slow physical progress, hormonal fluctuations, and mental barriers can all hinder one’s success. Bumstead has overcome all this and more. Not only has he attained a physique to be desired by sedentary and active people alike, but he’s also successfully translated his fame into multiple entrepreneurial ventures. He launched Bum Energy, a sports and energy drink company, and co-founded Raw Nutrition, a supplement brand focused on high-quality performance and recovery products. His partnerships with popular brands like Gymshark, Vaughn’s Treats, and Revive MD reflect his hands-on approach, ensuring that the products he endorses align with his values of transparency and quality in fitness.

In addition to his business endeavors, CBum is also a massive force on social media. With nearly 5 million followers on TikTok and over 24 million on Instagram, he’s one of the most influential fitness personalities online. He connects with his audience by sharing workout routines, nutrition advice, and personal insights into his life. Bumstead has been open about his struggles with mental health and his battle with IgA nephropathy, an autoimmune disease, further endearing him to fans for his vulnerability and authenticity. Bumstead’s combination of physical achievements, business ventures, and online transparency has made him a fitness icon. By redefining what it means to be a bodybuilder in today’s world, Chris Bumstead has inspired millions to pursue fitness.

Kevin Plank

undefinedYou might not know who Kevin Plank is, but at a place like Grove City College, his business is literally all around you. Kevin Plank is the creator of Under Armour. Picture this: you’re in the mid-’90s, and you’re a college football player frustrated with how sweaty and uncomfortable your workout gear is. While most of us weren’t even born yet, Plank was on a mission to revolutionize sportswear that we all know and love today. That probably makes you feel old.

Plank came up with Under Armour as the special teams captain of the University of Maryland football team, and for him, his drive is all about innovation. He didn’t just want to create a successful brand; he wanted to completely change the game. His determination to make high-performance, moisture-wicking athletic gear fueled Under Armour’s rise to the top. And as I’m sure you’ve guessed, it worked. Plank’s drive is a reminder that passion and a desire to make things better can be your biggest assets.

Plank’s idea is both simple and genius. Plank saw a gap in the market for gear that would help athletes perform at their best, and be (relatively) comfortable while doing it. Enter Under Armour with its moisture-wicking fabric and compression technology. It’s not just sportswear; it’s a true game-changer for athletes, and that’s what sets Plank’s idea apart. In terms of entrepreneurial traits, Plank’s got determination written all over him. Starting a business is tough, especially when you’re going up against industry giants like Nike and adidas. But Plank didn’t back down; he pushed through initial financial struggles and production setbacks. That kind of resilience is something any athlete can relate to.Who designed Under Armour's logo? - Quora

But we see now Plank isn’t focused only on sportswear; he’s all about adapting and staying ahead. His partnerships with athletes and ventures into digital fitness tech show that being an entrepreneur means keeping an eye on trends and thinking outside the box. We see this with the Under Armour MapMyFitness apps that track a wide variety of activities, from running to pickleball.

Learning from Plank isn’t just about business; it’s a life lesson. The importance of pushing boundaries, facing challenges head-on, and fostering a culture of innovation are principles that resonate with me, as myself and my peers navigate a world that sometimes feels as uncertain as our post-grad plans. As we close out the semester with last-minute assignments, late-night study sessions in preparation for finals, and dreams of the future, Kevin Plank’s story is a reminder that success isn’t just about a degree or a job. It’s about daring to dream, being relentless in your pursuits, and, most importantly, staying true to your vision. Some of us could probably take a page from Kevin Plank’s playbook as we navigate the exciting, unpredictable journey that is life. 🙂

Bauer Hockey

Bauer is one of the most popular brands of equipment in the hockey world. Wilhelm Bauer founded the company when he was only 21 years old in 1927. Wilhelm Bauer was from Ontaria, Canada and found his love for hockey as it was rapidly growing in the early 20th century. The first thing that Bauer focused on was skates. Bauer revolutionized how skates were made, as Bauer was the first hockey company to begin producing hockey skates in which the blade was permanently secured. This design innovation set the foundation for Bauer’s reputation for cutting-edge technology and performance-driven products. Today, they have products that range from all types of equipment and even clothing as well. In years following, the best product that Bauer Skate’s produced was marketed under the trade name “Bauer Supreme”. In the 1960s & 70’s, the company paid superstar Bobby Hall to endorse their skates. That continues today, as some of the very best players in the NHL are signed with Bauer. In 2006, beginning with the release of the Nike Bauer Supreme One90, the company’s products were rebranded as Nike Bauer. This was the first time that Nike had ever agreed to partner with another brand for a product. Since Nike was a household name, this greatly helped the popularity of Bauer products. Wilhelm Bauer helped build Bauer hockey into what it is today, with it being worth 1.39 billion dollars. Because of Wilhelm’s innovation at such a young age, his invention and further development of hockey equipment has revolutionized the game and paved the way for what is has grown into today.

Mario Karagianis – Perfect Hands Golf

Golf can be a sport that looks far easier than it actually is, taking people years to master. Mario Karagianis, founder of Perfect Hands Golf, was no exception. Growing up playing soccer as a kid, Karagianis got into golf when he entered the professional world, using the sport to connect with influential executives. Like a lot of people however, he struggled with getting the golf swing down. He sought help from various training aids and coaches, none of which seemed to work for him. This is where the idea for Perfect Hands Golf was born. Perfect Hands Golf, PHG for short, is different from other training systems, using acceleration bands to work on every aspect of the golf swing at once. Additionally, the PHG system doesn’t restrict the golfer’s natural motion allowing for both indoor and outdoor training.

“Most PGA Golf Professionals and Golf Instructors who have tried the PHG system see the effectiveness of the product after only 5 swings but more importantly, the rapid and dramatic improvement levels of students and amateur golfers in such a short period of time is off the charts,” Karagianis said in an interview with HJGT. The PHG system has revolutionized mastering the golf swing and is designed not just for adults, but kids too. In the same interview, Karagianis stated, “Parents should purchase PHG for their child for many reasons. It comfortably trains them how to make a full and power swing every single time while staying on plane. It will safely make them stronger through our progressive resistance training program, so they do not harm their muscles while they are still developing at their young age.” The PHG system continues to expand, having already partnered with associations such as NAIA and the Southern Texas section of PGA. Bruce Bolt

Bear Mayer started his company Bruce Bolt at the age of 16. His family owned and operated business provides the baseball community with better batting gloves. Bear kept recognizing the same pain that him and his teammates were dealing with in the sport that they were passionate about. The batting gloves that they were using would get tears in them and would need to be replaced every few weeks. His idea was to create a pair of batting gloves that would be more durable to withstand the entire season. Mayer believed that they could accomplish that goal by focusing on improving the design, materials, and craftmanship of their product. That is just what he did, and it is being recognized at the highest level of baseball, as there are many MLB players sporting his gloves.

Mayer had a vision for what he wanted to design and gained the confidence to take initiative on his journey. Those two traits were key to his success as a young entrepreneur. He said that he is motivated to become the best batting glove brand on the market. His love for the game of baseball is a big motivator for him, as he wants to fulfill the needs of other athletes. Mayer was able to understand that he didn’t need to invent a new product, but instead fix the current issues of it to be better. “Be Better”, the mantra of Mayer’s company, prompts his customers to see how they can always keep improving like his company has.

Mayer has inspired me to search for pains in an area of my interest, so that I can find solution to fix the problem. His actions have bettered the game of baseball. We can all learn that if you have an entrepreneurial mind and the right people beside you, you can make a big impact on the world.

Jason and Travis Kelce

Jason and Travis Kelce are brothers that both play in the national football league, and they are both pretty good at it. Jason Kelce is a perennial all pro center for the Philadelphia Eagles, while Travis Kelce has been making the argument for the best tight end of all time on the Kansas City Chiefs. Both Jason and Travis are fan favorites in their cities not only because of their stellar play on the field, but also because of their hilarious personalities off of the field. With this in mind Jason and Travis both banded together and made a podcast called new heights. The subject matter of these podcasts can range from intellectual conversations about the game of football, to hilarious stories they have gathered from their everyday lives. Along with releasing full length episodes, the Kelces also have other social media pages where they post snippets of every episode. Another thing they have working in their favor is that since Jason and Travis are both NFL superstars, they constantly have celebrity guests come onto the podcast in the form of their teammates like Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, which just adds more star power onto the podcast. We can learn from the Kelces that there are infinite ways to create a successful business. Even just being funny can lead to a profitable business in the form of podcasts and social media.

Dave Portnoy- Barstool Sports

David Portnoy is an internet and sports sensation. He grew up in Massachusetts and attended the University of Michigan. He had a minor job directly out of college at a small marketing firm in Boston but eventually left his job to start Barstool Sports in 2003. Barstool Sports started off as a sports newspaper that Portnoy himself would hand out in downtown Boston and in subway stations to people passing by. The newspaper had some trouble taking off at the beginning and the only sponsorships they had were with some small sports betting sites which were illegal in America. Believe it or not but Barstool Sports started to gain some traction in and around Boston once Portnoy started adding different things that would appeal to men on the covers of his newspapers. Portnoy eventually graduated from the newspaper and opened up his blog in 2007. Portnoy himself comes off as a ruthless type of person in his blogs and on the internet for his political incorrectness and has gained the name El Presidente amongst the fans of Barstool Sports. As of 2022, Portnoy still owns Barstool Sports and is in charge of the creative thought process for the blogs. In 2020, Penn National Gaming bought a 36% stake in Barstool which gave Portnoy $135 million in cash. Portnoy has retired his persona of the big ruthless “bro” as some would say and now has a series of going around the country reviewing pizza shops trying to find the perfect slice. When it comes to Dave Portnoy himself, he may not be the best person and there are many negative things that surround him, but all entrepreneurs should take his gritty push to become rich and famous and implement that into their work ethic. Not many people would go out and stand on subway stations for hours in consecutive days to try and make a name for themselves and their product.
