Billie Eilish, a Genre-Defying Musician

Billie Eilish began her career in music when she was only fourteen years old, making a splash with the single Ocean Eyes. It was uploaded to SoundCloud to be listened to for free by anyone, and within only a few weeks it had accrued a million plays. Billie Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, rejects many of the standards for what a billboard topping artist can look and sound like. Eilish has a unique sense of style, frequently matching baggy and brightly colored and patterned clothes with large and eccentric jewelry. She is inspired by Pop, Industrial, EDM, and Jazz, among other music genres. The result is something timeless and innovative, what some call a whole new genre. Much of her songs and lyrics which are now trending internationally were first written in her home in collaboration with her brother. (He releases music separately as part of a band called The Slightlys.)

Billie Eilish is a very creative person. Eilish speaks in an interview with Noisey about how she gets many ideas from her strange dreams. She was homeschooled, enjoying horseback riding, dance, and singing. In her youth, she was a fan of Anime, specifically the movie Spirited Away. Billie Eilish has an impressive record when it comes to acclaim, trophies, and awards. She has had her music appear in 13 Reasons Why and Barbie (2023). She is the youngest person to win the Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year awards at the Grammy’s. Though her career has been highly successful, it has not been a very long one. As of yet, Eilish has only released three studio albums over eight years of music making. She’s just twenty-two years old currently, and has the potential to be a mainstay in the Pop music world, continuing to bring new, dark combinations of sound onto the billboard charts. She can be an example to us all that if you pursue your ideas (no matter how strange) with enough passion and vision, you can find an audience. Put yourself out there, and share your ideas!

Frenshe by Ashley Tisdale

In 2020, well known actor actress Ashley Tisdale, most known for her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical, created her first perfume line, Frenshe. Frenshe has taken over the perfume isle in all Targets, but what is Frenshe and why did Ashley create it?

The brand started when Ashley was trying to understand her relationship with wellness but got overwhelmed with how much information and products there were on the market. She says, “I found myself overwhelmed by how much I didn’t know—what’s in the products we’re using every day, how our gut health affects the rest of our body, and how to live a toxic-free life without going bankrupt.” Through asking this question her new brand was formed. She met with experts and really narrowed down what goes into a perfume and how can we make it better?

Frenshe has a variety of scents for just about anyone, with their most common scents being lavender cloud and casimire vanilla. As well as coming in lots of scents, the perfumes come in many different shapes and sizes to match whatever you may need.  One of Ashleys main goals was to make sure her brand was healthy and affordable. One 5 FL. OZ bottle of perfume costs $14.99, which in comparison to Bath and Body Works having similar products being 18.99, its obvious she achieved her goal of making her brand affordable.

Along with affordability, Ashleys other main goal was to make her products, “formulated with clean ingredients and rooted in the emotional power of scent, so feeling good is as simple as taking a breath.” She achieved this goal as well by using clean ingredients and only putting in what is needed into her perfumes. I personally have used a number of her products, and will absolutely continue to keep using, and promoting her brand!

Children of Passion – Pocketti Plushies – Sydney and Toni Loew

Meet Sydney and Toni Loew, two sisters whose lives changed right in Middle School. Their product was inspired by an entrepreneur class Syndey had in 7th grade, which allowed her to write out a business, even create a prototype, and then she got to pitch the idea. Her target was 11-14 year old kids, so she chose to go down the toy route, where she created her business, Pocketti Plushies! She wanted something that would differ from other plushies, and decided to add something functional to the plushie by giving it a pocket to hold a phone in. Because her product did so well, she was able to get her plushies launched into a business.

With a rocketing business, Sydney and her sister Toni began their career, creating unique plushies, with powers as they called it. Each plushie was uniquely designed and made with different personalities. They were able to attend several sales events and create television commercials, as well being able to pitch their ideas to schools. They were also awarded several prizes such as Wonder Girls by Women in Toys in 2016.  They were also able to get Walmart as a client!

While their business is run by them and their mother, they also attended school. Sydney is now a graphic designer intern at Disney’s Yellow Shoes internal advertising agency. While her sister goes to USC’s Thornton School of Music, where she is in two music bands! Their love for all things creative is truly inspirational as they continue to grow their business across the world.

Despite their successes, even they have had rejections. They participated on Shark Tank 3 times and got a no each time, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing their business!

With their creativity and passion for innovation, they have created a business they hope to grow across the world. For now, we can appreciate how young these girls were when they began their journey, representing that even in Middle School, anything can be done if you put your mind to it. Success isn’t defined by the number of statistics, but by the satisfaction it gives to the customers and to you.

Riya Karumanchi: Founder and CEO of Smart Cane

Riya Karumanchi was only 15 years old when she came up with an idea to revolutionize technology to improve the well-being of visually impaired individuals. One day while visiting a friend’s house, Riya was introduced to her friend’s visually impaired grandmother. She empathized with the woman as she struggled to navigate and move throughout her home. Riya didn’t understand how over the years, the traditional white cane that aids in guiding the visually impaired, hadn’t been replaced by newer technology. She recognized the massive effect that technological advancements have on a society and the people living in it but did not believe changes in tech were being distributed equally in all communities. She came up with an idea to apply that to the standard white canes. Her idea was to integrate technology to the white cane by adding ultrasonic sensors that work to identify objects on the ground that may not have been detected before. This new device, the Smart Cane, is able to detect obstacles that may be in one’s path and alert the user of their location with vibrations. Another feature of the Smart Cane includes a GPS navigation system which helps the user to travel safely and efficiently. This is also made possible by the use of vibrations: One buzz to turn left, and two buzzes to turn right.

Riya’s innovative idea had proved a success. Smart Cane had initial funding from many large companies such as Microsoft, Arrow Electronics, and Inertia Engineering. She raised over $85,000 in funding. Next her attention will turn to user testing. Riya recognized the importance of input from the prospective users themselves. She met with the visually impaired community and listened to the problems they encountered with the standard white cane. She then came up with innovation solutions and developed the Smart Cane. Smart Cane’s mission, she says, is to empower the visually impaired and create for them a better, safer way of living. “Instead of [building] a company that has a valuation of a billion dollars, it’s the person that can impact a billion people,” she explains. “It’s ambitious, but that’s my goal.”

Bloom Nutrition by Mari Llewellyn

Most likely, if you’ve been in the drink aisle of any grocery store in the past couple years, you may have spotted Bloom, a new and upcoming health brand. Bloom is a high-quality health supplements brand for women founded by 30-year-old Mari Llewellyn. Mari, who was born in England, founded Bloom alongside her husband Greg. Mari wanted to take control of her health after, “[she] hit rock bottom mentally and physically.” After this she decided it was time for a change, Mari was able to lose 90 pounds and through this journey was able to grow in self-love as well. From this she was, “inspired to help other women do the same… to help everyone bloom into their best selves.” 

Bloom is consistently improving and shaping the women’s health industry every day. With their business growing everyday there’s no doubt they will stop anytime soon. With Mari’s Instagram having 1.5 million followers and counting, and Blooms having just over 500k its obvious Bloom has consistent customers. Mari and Greg both made Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2022 as well. Alongside having consistent products in store for customers to buy, Bloom has also partnered with lots of influencers and other major companies like Erewhon and Vita coco to get their name out into the market.

Monika Dharia- Founder/CEO of EcoRain Poncho

Imagine coming up with and launching a business idea straight from your dorm room based off an issue with ponchos! Well, that’s what Monika Dharia did in 2016 as a sophomore at Duke. Monika Dharia studied environmental engineering, entrepreneurship, and economics during her time at Duke. She first realized that it rains a lot on the campus and went from thinking about renting umbrellas for free to eventually thinking about no plastic-based ponchos. She noticed that there was a problem with disposable petroleum-based products, especially with the ponchos. But how can you make a rain poncho more eco-friendly? And how can you make a poncho that’s different than any other poncho? Well, the answer lies in renewable materials and responsible packaging to help this ongoing issue. EcoRain Ponchos are sustainable ponchos that help to lower greenhouse gas emissions as well as being reusable and recyclable. These ponchos are responsibly sourced from Brazil made from sugarcane ethanol. What else also makes these ponchos unique? It’s that Monika made sure to include that the packaging for the ponchos is plastic free and made from FSC-certified recycled kraft paper. Soy based ink also helps to make their paper packaging easier to recycle. How many other companies that sell ponchos have unlimited uses because they’re 100% recyclable and is great for the environment? Not many other companies have thought of innovative ideas like Monika has! Monika has also won $35,000 in funding for her ponchos, but things started getting tough during the pandemic. Eventually she pulled through after getting a partnership with GreenGear. But it doesn’t stop there, because she also got a partnership with the Eagles and Braskem! So far, her ponchos have made an impact by fulfilling orders with Duke, Yale, North Carolina FC, the Eagles, and even some national parks like Yellowstone and Zion! Monika Dharia’s ideas and innovations towards the poncho market are groundbreaking, and it’s no surprise thanks to her entrepreneurial and environmental engineering skills! From an idea to reducing plastic in ponchos to being “the first 100% sugarcane-based poncho.” Monika has also been featured in Forbes 30 under 30, and in 2023 they have donated $11k to nonprofit organizations. If you still thought that was amazing, their business is also a minority and woman owned small business while also being 1% for the Planet members. So, Monika proves that if you see a need that can be fulfilled and even improved in the process to be more eco-friendly, to take a chance because your idea might be as great as an EcoRain Poncho!

The Sweetest Devotion: Ashley Hetherington’s Journey as a Christ-Centered Influencer

Struggling to find her footing on a path through a season of worldly pressures and broken relationships, Ashley Hetherington was a young woman on the hunt for meaning and purpose, an unconscious search for her Lord burning from a heart of confusion riddled with footholds. But now, standing on the other side of this mountain of turmoil, is an emboldened 24-year-old woman of God whose radiant passion for Christ shines through her efforts as an influencer, author, and content creator. This renewed relationship with God that grew from one of the darkest periods of Ashley’s life has lit in her a fervor for helping other young women come to terms with fighting their own battles, especially concerning faith.

Hetherington has achieved this through business initiatives that, initially, took a leap of faith to pursue wholeheartedly; graduating from Miami University with a degree in interactive media studies and journalism and thus armed to aid in the growth of other companies, she never thought her own writing and social media presence would grow into anything more than a hobby and college pastime. But keeping God central to the trajectory of her life and career has led to a fruition of and full-time devotion to this mission through many outlets.

Ashley’s simple aim has been to encourage her fellow sisters in Christ, citing Proverbs 16:24: “Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”  She orchestrates a variety of media to reach her followers, including several bestselling books and eBooks, an online blog called “The Honey Scoop”, social media channel (accessible through Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and Facebook), a podcast, and a free email subscription for weekly devotionals called “The Hive.” Additionally, Hetherington has a premium Bible study deemed “The Tree”, which includes a daily Bible reading plan, weekly devotional video, monthly group calls with women from across the globe, and access to recommended worship playlists, podcasts, and book recommendations. Ashley’s content, especially “The Tree”, reaches thousands of women from all over every year, uniting them under the purpose of growing into stronger, faith-filled daughters of Christ.

Notably, amidst this success, Hetherington always offers this glory back to Christ. She stated in an interview with Peer Magazine, “I’ll never forget that in one of the lessons [at Miami University], we were taught we are in the business of effort and God is in the business of result so it’s on us to put in the effort. To put in the work, to do the time, to be consistent, to innovate, to network, to show up every day, but God is in the business of results.” In Zero to One, Peter Theil remarks on “the guiding concepts of business”, among these principles being that “it is better to risk boldness than triviality (p. 20).” Ashley Hetherington is living a life and guiding a mission that testifies to the truth in this notion—whatever the internal struggles and external obstacles someone faces, a heart and business built on the Rock will flourish in His perfect timing for the glory of His kingdom.

FireflySlime: A very bright idea

Angelina Ly is a young woman blessed with a raw talent for entrepreneurship. When she was just 14 years old, she recognized that the slime industry was starting to gain traction in America, so she wasted no time in getting her foot in the door. She began to make her own slime and marketing herself on Social Medias like Instagram and TikTok. She quickly began to receive orders and FireflySlime was born. While her business is her official job (developing new slimes, packaging them, and continuing to grow her social medias), Ly is still a full-time college student. I loved Ly’s ability to see the future of her business and take full advantage of it. Today, Ly has nearly 380 thousand followers on Instagram. Her online store is similar to her Instagram page: it is filled with bright colors, fun names, and awesome graphics. Another great feature is that she is constantly refreshing her store’s variety; proving that she is still always creating and providing new products for her customers.

Lily Born and the Kangaroo Cup

Lilly Born was eight years old when she struck upon her innovation gold. Her grandfather had Parkinson’s and was constantly spilling his drink whenever he tried to set his cup down. Her grandmother had to do so much cleaning up, and Lilly wanted to do something about it. That’s when she came up with the Kangaroo cup, a three-legged cup specifically designed to be easy to set down and hard to spill.

The kangaroo cup was a simple response to a simple problem. It is a great example of the typical, “Everyone saw the apple fall, but only Newton wondered why.” The innovation was not necessarily technological, but rather a repurposing of existing technology. She created a cup with three handles, which also doubled as legs to keep the cup from spilling when set down. Anybody could have done this, but nobody had the wit or bravery to do so until Lily.

 

 

Lilly has since sold $100,000 of kangaroo cups through crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo. She founded her own company, Imagiroo LLC., to handle the distribution of the cups.

Her ongoing message is that she thought of this idea as only an eight-year-old. If she could do it, anybody can.

Where I find inspiration in this story is the fact that it was not an insane technological innovation, or social revelation. Instead, she took a typical item and applied her observation to it. It gives me hope that even if the idea I have is small, it can still be successful so long as I put effort behind it.

From this story it is apparent to me that we must observe others, not just ourselves, to get a full picture of our entrepreneurial space. Sometimes the sight of someone else struggling with a problem can either give us an idea or bring up a dormant idea we forgot about and give it new life.

 

Lily Born

One of the most fundamental skills an entrepreneur can posses is the ability to see a problem, want to fix it, and create a solution. That’s exactly what Lily Born, then aged 7, did. She noticed the effects Parkinson’s Disease had on her grandfather. Easily knocked over cups caused spills and messes that often cause damage to other items in the house, be it a computer or paperwork, and extra work for grandma to clean up. After a bit of experimentation, and a few prototypes, Lily created the Kangaroo cup, a durable, ceramic cup featuring three stabilizing legs. The now 16 year-old has produced and sold tens of thousands of cups around the world.

Lily’s story is not just one of innovation, but courage. Before launching her company Imagiroo, Lily was a timid and shy girl who balked at even the idea of ordering food for herself at a restaurant. Her desire to help people and inspire others to create impact in the world helped her overcome her anxieties and reach higher than she even anticipated.
