Yunha Kim- Simple Habit

How could the careers of business and businesswomen be improved so that they reduce stress and improve productivity and creativity? Wall Street investment banker Yunha Kim asked herself this question when she quit her job and started her first start-up. She was experiencing lots of stress because of her startup and looked to find ways to manage it. After awhile, she looked to meditation. Just of few minutes per day improved her work life, personal life, and physical health. Because of this improvement in her own life, Yunha decided to build an app to help busy business professionals such as herself balance work-related stress.

Simple Habit was officially founded in the Spring of 2016, and it’s mission is to “empower humans to stress less, achieve more and live better.” (https://www.simplehabit.com/press) It does this through over 2,000 guided meditations that range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or more. Each meditation session is situationally specific and uses calming talking or sounds to focus the user and calm them. The categories range from evening and sleep meditation and mindfulness sessions to before a meeting to before a date.

Yunha Kim used her connections from Wall Street to raise over $3 million from prominent investors for her first startup. Simple Habit is backed by some of the best of the best in Silicon valley, including Dropbox CEO Drew Houston and Gusto CEO Joshua Reeves. Yunha Kim is a great example of an entrepreneur because she used her own struggles and needs to solve a problem that many people experience.

Sofia Overton – Success In Her Pockets

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket Products

At age 11, Sofia Overton started her company Wise Pocket Products because she wanted to help children who are active as well as those who are in need. She realized there was a lack of pocket space when she saw her cousin put her phone in her sock. After trying this for herself, she spotted the inefficiency of this method and wanted to fix this problem. She decided to make socks with pockets in them. After finding success with this product, she has decided to expand her business to sell leggings as well.

Kareesha Carter is a super driven, young entrepreneur. She did not have an easy childhood whatsoever. Her mother went to jail when she was 10 years old and she had to be raised by her grandmother because her father was unemployed at the time. She was able to adapt to an incredibly different and complicated situation such as that which shows that she has the adaptability trait that is crucial for entrepreneurs. She left home at 17 years old and went to live on her own. This shows extreme responsibility and motivation considering she managed all of this at such a young age. She started her first business at the age of 21 which was a hair store in Sacramento CA and her business provides for people all over the world and has now generated 5-figure revenues per month. She has managed to earn $100,000 per month amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This demonstrates her adaptability once again and how she was able to accomplish these huge numbers when our country and a lot of businesses are currently suffering. Next, she has two other businesses in addition to her hair store. She runs a podcast called ‘Lady Boss’ and also runs a ‘Beauty Bootcamp’ which both specifically cater to young entrepreneurs. She teaches various important aspects of running a business including: increasing sales and numbers, how to create expensive marketing plans, and how to reach and keep customers over time. On top of all her endeavors she is now a mother to a wonderful little baby and yet still continues to maintain her podcast and store. Kareesha is extremely inspiring to me considering she manages to juggle 3 businesses while being a mother, has achieved so much at such a young age, and, despite her difficult past, has managed to make something of herself and provide for herself and now for her daughter.

Goldieblox, founded in 2012, is a children’s multimedia company that creates toys, books, videos, and other products with the mission of empowering young girls in their hopes and dreams for the future.  Some of their products include the DIY LED cloud light, Maker’s Essential’s Toolbox, and a DIY Glitter Beauty Lab. As a young woman with an engineering background, Sterling wanted to inspire young girls to love science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Looking at the world around her, Sterling saw that cars, legos, and construction toys were pretty much only marketed to young boys – inspiring them to build and create from a young age.  At just 29 years old, Sterling decided to use her entrepreneurial mind to design products that could inspire girls in the same way.

Like most young entrepreneurs, Sterling experienced several criticisms when first starting Goldieblox.  She was constantly told that while her cause was noble, the products wouldn’t sell.  Despite setbacks, she was determined to accomplish her dream of inspiring young girls in STEM.

GoldieBlox | Mohawk Valley Library SystemNot only has she been successful in inspiring young girls, but she has also created a profitable business.  Goldieblox has sold over 1 million toys all over the world and has over 1 million app downloads.  Additionally, the company has received several honors and awards.  Goldieblox has been named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies and was The Toy Industry Association’s Toy of the Year.  Additionally, Debbie Sterling was inducted as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship by former President Obama.

Jasmine Crowe: Goodr

Jasmine Crowe is a female entrepreneur who uses her innovation and knowledge to make a huge impact on the food supply chain and hunger in America. In 2017, Jasmine founded Goodr, a food logistics company that takes excess food from large conference centers, airports, and companies, and redistributes it to people who struggle with poverty-related hunger. According to Feeding America, 37 million people in America struggle with hunger (https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/facts) and Jasmine Crowe believes that this number can be significantly lowered by distributing food correctly, instead of producing more.

How does Goodr deliver value?

Goodr has a “triple-win” solution that delivers value to customers, the planet, and those struggling with poverty-related hunger. By donating excess food to food banks and other donation centers, companies can increase their bottom line through charitable tax donations. Additionally, companies are no longer sending the excess food to landfills and creating more greenhouse gases, which improves sustainability in the company and benefits the environment. Finally, Goodr delivers value to communities in need by delivering the surplus food to those who are struggling. Goodr does not deliver the food to communities and leave, instead, they take a hands-on approach to ending hunger. The company produces pop-up grocery stores in low-income communities that allow community members to shop a variety of fresh foods for free. Many of these pop-up grocery stores are sponsored by local companies and corporations, enabling and encouraging these companies to give back and care about the community they are in. In addition to these pop-up grocery stores, Goodr provides demonstrations on how to cook healthy meals.

Goodr has donated over 2 millions pounds of food from companies such as Netflix, Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport, NFL, and many more.

Inspiration

This is not Jasmine’s first innovative approach to giving. She is also the founder of BCG (blackcelebritygiving.com), a non-profit philanthropic company that partners with black celebrities all over the world to use their influence and resources for good. Jasmine is an inspiration to innovators worldwide who seek to make the world a better place through entrepreneurship and service.

Noa-edited-10 copy.jpg

This young entrepreneur named Noa Mintz started a business called Nannies by Noa when she was just 12 years old in 2012. She has made numerous appearances on various television stations and channels to talk about her service and has a wide following behind her business. As of 2015 her business had a net worth of about $375,000. Her business aims to find the best nannies and babysitters for families around New York City, the Hamptons and the Tri-state area. Noa is extremely driven by her passion for helping children and their families. Friends and family close to her would say that she has a niche for matchmaking people together which has aided her in finding nannies and babysitters that are compatible with certain types of families. Her idea is great and very interesting because it gives families a platform in which they can find reliable, fun, passionate, and trustworthy nannies that parents can feel safe leaving their children with and to help care for their children when they are unable to. They do a detailed background screening and even provide some educational services for nannies and babysitters to improve their skills. She ended up hiring a trained CEO to run the business for her because working 40 hours a week was interfering with her schoolwork. That being said, she clearly cares about her education in addition to her business. When she is not engaged in work for her business or school, she is also part of an organization called The Friendship Circle which pairs teenagers with special needs children and offers mentorship for them. She demonstrates innovation by providing this service to families all over New York City and the Tri-state area, which is a very large geographic area, that has a lot of people in need of this type of service. Her story and motivation is very inspiring to me and shows me that any business is possible to create and establish no matter what age you are.

The Founder of ‘Modern Picnic’

Ali Kaminetsky came up with the idea for her business, Modern Picnic, only a couple weeks after graduating from Lehigh University in 2016. Modern Picnic sells lunch boxes that are not only features practical features such as insulated interiors, but also is fashionable.

Ali says the idea for a fashionable high quality lunch box line came after moving to New York City and starting a job in retail. She realized that bringing her lunch to work every day was faster, cheaper, and healthier than buying food every day. Yet, only a week after being in her new job she saw a gap in the lunch box market. As a business professionals, she didn’t have a good option as to what to pack her lunch in. Carrying a plastic bags was not professional for the work setting and most lunch boxes on the market were designed with child-like patterns to appeal to children taking lunches to school. Ali realized that professional adults could use a high-quality, practical lunch box that was still sleek and stylish.

She chose to leave her traditional job behind after a few months in order to ensure that her new business would be a success. Her business, Modern Picnic, has grown exponentially and proved to be very successful. Since the start of the business Ali has expanded the business model by incorporating a goal of sustainability. Each of the products is made with sustainability in mind and every product that features leather material is vegan. Ali clearly shows her entrepreneurial skills by her identification of the problem and taking a risk to pursue solving it. She took an existing product that had not been redesigned for a long time (the lunch box) and put her own twist on it in order to penetrate an existing market (the working professional).

Ellington Timepiece – Teri Elizabeth Wellington

In 2017, 24-year-old Teri Elizabeth Ellington founded her very own watch collection, Ellington Timepiece, as a platform to raise awareness for mental health and support those who suffer from it. Using her last paycheck from a job she lost two months prior to Christmas, Teri launched her first watch design, The Grey Sheba, named after her own therapy dog, Sheba. Sheba became Teri’s therapy dog while she was deeply struggling through mental illness herself. Through Ellington Timepiece, Teri has found strength and purpose while also creating a brand that is passionate about raising awareness for mental health.

“If I can do it, other young people can too,” Teri preaches. Teri struggled with depression, anxiety, and agoraphobia in her past, which created her passion for spreading awareness to other people about these mental illnesses.

Ellington Timepiece is more than just a watch line. The watches serve a greater purpose than a mere accessory on someone’s wrist; The designs are meant to be a voice for those who do not have one. Each watch has a story and meaning behind it.

Through her successes, Teri even created a recent social media movement, #yourstoryetp. People who wear Ellington Timepiece designs share their own stories of mental health creating both a community of watch-lovers and a community for people to share their own journeys as well.
