Tara Gentile – What Works Podcast

Tara Gentile became an entrepreneur as a young adult. Tara was working in a corporate job when the opportunity arose for her to be considered for a promotion. She had been working hard for this promotion, but was overlooked due to being nine months pregnant. Tara then left this job when her daughter was 6 months old in order to start a Podcast and online community called What Works?

Tara speaks mainly to women in business through her platforms in order to address common business questions. She brings in a variety of guest speakers to bounce ideas off of and create an open dialogue. The topics on her popular Podcast range from hiring and HR practices to marketing and advertising and its effects on target markets. She does not shy away from controversial business topics when speaking on her Podcast. Tara intentionally seeks out various perspectives in order to form unconventional and innovate strategies.

I believe that it is inspiring to look to women like Tara Gentile. She took an unfortunate trial that she had to face in her life as a professional businesswoman, and used it in order to empower other women like her in similar positions. She clearly used a entrepreneurial mindset when being faced with this problem and than building her business to address this identified need.

Kang Sisters – Coffee Meets Bagel

Dawoon, Arum, and Soo Kang are changing the way online dating works for women with their app called Coffee Meets Bagel. The sisters grew up in an entrepreneurial family and all had ample experience in the business world. Dawoon worked in investment banking, Arum received her MBA from Harvard University, and Soo was a successful graphic designer in the fashion industry. They decided to combine their expertise and solve a pain they saw in the online dating market. Many of their friends felt that dating apps were oversaturated with men and geared toward the way men want to date online. They created Coffee Meets Bagel as a way to connect online through meaningful conversation. The app is unique from Tinder and Bumble because it specifically selects up to 6 bagels (or matches) for women every day through their algorithm that matches couples based on multiple similar interests so they only see matches that are highly relevant. Essentially, Coffee Meets Bagel connects people through similarities, not location or looks. To date, there are more than 70,000 couples who met on Coffee Meets Bagel and that number continues to grow.

One of the most impressive things about these entrepreneurs is that they were offered $30 million dollars by Mark Cuban when they pitched their idea on Shark Tank, yet they declined the offer. The Kang sisters used this offer as a confirmation that their idea was good and it had a huge potential for success, but they do not regret turning the offer down. They wanted to be in control of the app themselves. Being female tech entrepreneurs in this day and age has had challenges, but the Kang sisters have demonstrated that knowledge, expertise, and the ability to identify and fix pains in a market can have a huge impact and payoff and they wanted to develop this app on their own. They were able to raise over $11 million dollars in venture funding which enabled them to start and continue to grow their app.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty has taken the world by storm for years now. The 32-year-old has made her presence known in the music world, the business world, the black community, and so on. She went from pop star to philanthropist to business-woman very abruptly. She was born in Bridgetown, Barbados and left when she was 16 years old and moved to the United States of America. Rihanna became popular in the music industry in 2005 at age 17 years old. She started her company called Fenty Beauty in 2016 (at age 28) which sells a variety of makeup products that cater to many different ages and cultures of people. Fenty Beauty originally started in a collaboration with Puma and then branched off and joined LVMH’s beauty brand Kendo. One of the main things about this company that caught the eye of consumer’s was that the brand offered 40 different shades of foundation. This feature of the company alone allowed for people to start viewing it as a culturally diverse company because it offered a shade of foundation for essentially every skin color/type there is which other makeup brands have failed to do in the past and to this day. Rihanna is extremely adaptive, innovative, etc. considering that she saw an area that was lacking and aimed to fix it and bring something new to the table that would appeal to many different groups of people. She is now known as the richest female musician and has grown her net worth to $600 million. In relation to who she is as a person and her values, she has been an advocate for equality across races and for women’s rights as well. She inspires me in so many ways seeing that she is extremely talented and has accomplished so much in so many different areas which shows how diverse her abilities are.

Yunha Kim- Simple Habit

How could the careers of business and businesswomen be improved so that they reduce stress and improve productivity and creativity? Wall Street investment banker Yunha Kim asked herself this question when she quit her job and started her first start-up. She was experiencing lots of stress because of her startup and looked to find ways to manage it. After awhile, she looked to meditation. Just of few minutes per day improved her work life, personal life, and physical health. Because of this improvement in her own life, Yunha decided to build an app to help busy business professionals such as herself balance work-related stress.

Simple Habit was officially founded in the Spring of 2016, and it’s mission is to “empower humans to stress less, achieve more and live better.” (https://www.simplehabit.com/press) It does this through over 2,000 guided meditations that range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or more. Each meditation session is situationally specific and uses calming talking or sounds to focus the user and calm them. The categories range from evening and sleep meditation and mindfulness sessions to before a meeting to before a date.

Yunha Kim used her connections from Wall Street to raise over $3 million from prominent investors for her first startup. Simple Habit is backed by some of the best of the best in Silicon valley, including Dropbox CEO Drew Houston and Gusto CEO Joshua Reeves. Yunha Kim is a great example of an entrepreneur because she used her own struggles and needs to solve a problem that many people experience.

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket Products

At age 11, Sofia Overton started her company Wise Pocket Products because she wanted to help children who are active as well as those who are in need. She realized there was a lack of pocket space when she saw her cousin put her phone in her sock. After trying this for herself, she spotted the inefficiency of this method and wanted to fix this problem. She decided to make socks with pockets in them. After finding success with this product, she has decided to expand her business to sell leggings as well.

Kareesha Carter is a super driven, young entrepreneur. She did not have an easy childhood whatsoever. Her mother went to jail when she was 10 years old and she had to be raised by her grandmother because her father was unemployed at the time. She was able to adapt to an incredibly different and complicated situation such as that which shows that she has the adaptability trait that is crucial for entrepreneurs. She left home at 17 years old and went to live on her own. This shows extreme responsibility and motivation considering she managed all of this at such a young age. She started her first business at the age of 21 which was a hair store in Sacramento CA and her business provides for people all over the world and has now generated 5-figure revenues per month. She has managed to earn $100,000 per month amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This demonstrates her adaptability once again and how she was able to accomplish these huge numbers when our country and a lot of businesses are currently suffering. Next, she has two other businesses in addition to her hair store. She runs a podcast called ‘Lady Boss’ and also runs a ‘Beauty Bootcamp’ which both specifically cater to young entrepreneurs. She teaches various important aspects of running a business including: increasing sales and numbers, how to create expensive marketing plans, and how to reach and keep customers over time. On top of all her endeavors she is now a mother to a wonderful little baby and yet still continues to maintain her podcast and store. Kareesha is extremely inspiring to me considering she manages to juggle 3 businesses while being a mother, has achieved so much at such a young age, and, despite her difficult past, has managed to make something of herself and provide for herself and now for her daughter.

Goldieblox: the building blocks for the future of STEM

Official GoldieBlox Store

Like many young entrepreneurial adults, Debbie Sterling found herself yearning to make a difference on the world.  Sterling, a 2005 engineering and product design Stanford graduate, was working a minimum wage job after college.  For several years, she bounced around between different projects, but she hadn’t found something she was truly passionate about – until Goldieblox.

How Debbie Sterling's GoldieBlox tapped into 'the holy grail of marketing': viral video - Bizwomen

Goldieblox, founded in 2012, is a children’s multimedia company that creates toys, books, videos, and other products with the mission of empowering young girls in their hopes and dreams for the future.  Some of their products include the DIY LED cloud light, Maker’s Essential’s Toolbox, and a DIY Glitter Beauty Lab. As a young woman with an engineering background, Sterling wanted to inspire young girls to love science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Looking at the world around her, Sterling saw that cars, legos, and construction toys were pretty much only marketed to young boys – inspiring them to build and create from a young age.  At just 29 years old, Sterling decided to use her entrepreneurial mind to design products that could inspire girls in the same way.

Like most young entrepreneurs, Sterling experienced several criticisms when first starting Goldieblox.  She was constantly told that while her cause was noble, the products wouldn’t sell.  Despite setbacks, she was determined to accomplish her dream of inspiring young girls in STEM.

GoldieBlox | Mohawk Valley Library SystemNot only has she been successful in inspiring young girls, but she has also created a profitable business.  Goldieblox has sold over 1 million toys all over the world and has over 1 million app downloads.  Additionally, the company has received several honors and awards.  Goldieblox has been named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies and was The Toy Industry Association’s Toy of the Year.  Additionally, Debbie Sterling was inducted as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship by former President Obama.
