Benjamin Stern Creating Plastic Free Products with Nohbo

Benjamin Stern decided he wanted to help the planet while in 9th grade. Stern was watching a documentary in his biology class about the effects of plastic waste. He was horrified by the impact of plastic and decided he wanted to change the way we package products. He created Nohbo, a company that creates plastic-free single-use shampoo packets. The product is in a pod where the casingBenjamin Stern dissolves to release the product when in water. Nohbo has expanded from just shampoo to now also including conditioner and body wash in the pod format. They did not stop there though. They have created films of soap that turn into foaming soap when added to water and leave no remains behind. Nohbo’s expansion shows how innovation of one product can lead to a bigger need.

Benjamin Stern went on Shark Tank at just 16 years old. He even won the Young Entrepreneur Award from the governor of Florida. His determination to better the environment through a new technology makes him an admirable young entrepreneur. Having a sustainability niche creates a target audience that is definitely growing, so his product has both a clear purpose and aim audience which makes a good business model. Nohbo seeks to provide quality, sustainable products with great performance. He does not want the eco-friendly nature of them to deter from what customers are used to the products doing. Benjamin Stern values having a quality product for his customers.

Stern is a unique entrepreneur, because he was able to create an innovative product to combat a environmental issue. His product is unlike any other shampoo packaging as they all come in large quantity plastic bottles. By changing this, he has challenged the standards of the industry by promoting the environment. He exemplifies what it means to be an entrepreneur by challenging norms and being passionate. He has inspired me to want to challenge the norms that often promote hazardous behavior. He has showed me that innovation does not have to be a whole new product but could be a twist on something like packaging that turns into a huge new idea. He taught me that norms do not have to be the only way and that you are never to young to start creating change. Overall, Stern is an inspiring young entrepreneur who is making huge advances with Nohbo and the eco-friendly market.

Michael Dell: Revolutionizing the Computer Industry

Some entrepreneurs do more than start a business—they revolutionize an industry. Such was the case with young Michael Dell, founder of Dell Inc.  From a young age, Michael Dell exemplified the innovative spirit of a budding entrepreneur, finding problems and solving them in unique ways. Through his entrepreneurial endeavors as a teenager and young man, Dell became a major figure in modern history. Specifically, Dell’s innovation in the computer industry played a critical role in the reshaping of the modern personal computer market.

At age 15, Dell bought his first computer, an Apple II—one of the first personal computers available at the mass level—for the purpose of disassembling it to see how it worked. Dell’s intrigue with computers did not end here, however. In 1983, Dell began studying pre-med at the University of Texas, in accordance with his parents’ desire for him to become a doctor. In his freshman year, Dell further cultivated his interest in computers by repairing and upgrading his fellow students’ computers. Before long, Dell’s dorm-room business venture had morphed into something far greater than a hobby. Dell noticed a tempting gap in the computer industry at the time. While people were beginning to use personal computers, nobody was selling them directly to the consumer. Computers were being sold indirectly to consumers through a middleman, creating an un-personalized and unnecessarily expensive market. Dell stepped into this hole by offering customized PC computers at a fair price directly to consumers. The success of Dell’s somewhat simple innovation was immediate. In his freshman year alone, Dell made approximately $80,000 of profit. At age 19, he dropped out of school and began to work full-time for his company, PCs Limited. Within a single year, Dell accumulated a staggering $6 million in sales revenue. After beginning sales over the web in 1996, Dell’s company—by this time renamed Dell Inc.—averaged above $1 million in sales every day. By 2001, Michael Dell was a billionaire who employed over 35,000 people.

Michael Dell’s entrepreneurial pursuits did not begin in college. Dell was characterized by a strong work ethic from a young age, obtaining his first job at age 12. In high school, Dell created an innovative newspaper subscription service, making $200,000 in profits in the first year. Dell’s success as a young entrepreneur was driven by a strong customer-first mentality. He looked for ways to deliver a high-quality product with an outstanding customer experience. As he would later go on to say, “At Dell, we believe the customer is in control, and our job is to take all the technology that’s out there and apply it in a useful way to meet the customer’s needs.”

Dell’s innovation in the computer market changed the way people thought about and used personal computers. Instead of computers being mass produced by manufacturers and sold indirectly to consumers through salesmen, computers were sold directly to consumers, who were able to customize how they wanted their computer assembled.

Young Michael Dell personified successful entrepreneurship—when he saw a problem, he did what he could to solve it by offering customer-oriented, innovative solutions. What began as a small business in a college student’s dorm-room was transformed into a global business that has served millions of customers. As Dell said, “You don’t have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream.” Dell’s example is an inspiration to young entrepreneurs today. As a young man, he spotted potential problems and sought ways to fix them. Though certainly not every entrepreneur will be as successful as Michael Dell, young entrepreneurs can learn from his example and apply these lessons to their own pursuits.

George Bailey, creating a wonderful life.

The name George Bailey may remind you of an old Christmas movie but I assure you that the co-founder of Coral Eyewear is much more. George, born in Manchester England in 2000, saw the detrimental cost that plastic fishing nets lost in the ocean, as well as landfills full of plastic has on the environment. He sought to get rid of this problem while also creating a product that is marketable and thus, Coral Eyewear was created. Coral Eyewear is a company that takes recycled fishing nets and old plastic in landfills and repurposes it to make stylish, comfortable, and environmentally beneficial sunglasses. Bailey saw the problem of this wasted plastic for a long time and spent multiple years putting this problem on the backburner of his mind until the solution popped out at him. George was shocked to find that the idea didn’t exist already and, seeking to not just be environmentally friendly, but rather, “planet-positive”, he immediately jumped on the idea after receiving a £50,000 donation from his colleges entrepreneurship department to get it started. George Bailey currently has his Coral Eyewear product line in over 100 stores in the U.K. and plans to continue making large planet-positive strides as long as he can.

Adelle Archer, CEO & Co-Founder of Eterneva

“It’s in Tracey’s honor that I’m working to help thousands of families preserve their own loved ones’ legacies.”
— CO-FOUNDER ADELLE ARCHER

The way that this thoughtful and powerful business came to be is through the loss of Adelle Archer’s mentor, Tracy. Tracy was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer at only the age of 47 years old. Tracy was set to do many great things during her life but she was worried that she was not going to be able to create a great legacy for herself. Tracy was soon reinsured of how many lives that she had impacted by people sending her letters of how she had affected their lives. After Tracy’s passing, Adelle was the guardian of Tracy’s ashes and she had them turned into a black diamond ring to capture her sparkling spirit and for close keeping.

Eterneva was created for those that have lost loved ones to have the ability to have their ashes that have been turned into a diamond to either hang around their neck as a necklace or be worn around their finger as a ring. This company is not just mass producing meaningless diamonds, they are caring for each and every individual’s loved one’s ashes. This process only requires two tablespoons to a half of a cup of ashes or hair to be able to turn them into beautiful and meaningful diamonds. This process takes about 7-10 months to complete. Also, this process starts at a cost of $2,999 . This company has 5 steps to get this memorable and meaningful piece to you including the following:

  1.  Receive your welcome kit – You receive a package including a video, instructions, return postage, and the needed tools for you to send them your loved one’s ashes.
  2. A remarkable transformation – They isolate the carbon from ashes, which will start the process for the making of the diamond(s).
  3. A diamond emerges – This is when the magic of the process is truly revealed in the raw diamond that is created.
  4. Cut, polished, set by masters – Your diamond is cut in Antwerp, graded and engraved, possibly colored and set in personalized jewelry.

At only the age of 23, she graduated as valedictorian with her MBA in Entrepreneurship from the Acton School of Business, which is considered the ‘navy seal’ program for future entrepreneurs. She than spent 4 years as a Product Marketing leader in Tech, where she was able to launch major products to market with partners like Amazon, eBay, Square, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. Adelle has been able to provide her customer with an experience that they did not even know they needed in their life, she has made it possible to always have the ones you love right there with you.

Omari McQueen: the 12 year old author, chef, and CEO

12-year-old award-winning Omari McQueen is making history and inspiring millions with his thriving vegan food brand, Dipalicious.

After his mother became sick, Omari McQueen, at the young age of 7, began cooking for his family. This was the beginning of a passion and love for cooking. One year later, McQueen, at age 8, went vegan after learning how animals were treated for food and clothing. He found that veganism could help his mother and began to cook vegan recipes for her. McQueen’s passion of vegan food soon led to the start of his YouTube channel, Omari Goes Wild, in 2017 where he posted vegan cooking videos. This same year, he founded Dipalicious, a food brand that offers vegan Caribbean fare. His main purpose with the company was to create great tasting food without putting animals in danger. McQueen says, “The thing that inspired my recipes is bringing people together with good food without harming animals”

Omari McQueen’s dedication to his craft did not end there. In the summer of 2017, Boxpark’s CEO Roger Wade invited and financial supported the young entrepreneur to host a weeklong pop-up at Boxparks’ Croyden location. McQueen also went on to write his very own vegan cookbook, Omari McQueen’s Best Bites Cookbook– another “dream come true” for the young chef. “I’ve achieved a goal as I’ve got dyslexia I found it hard spelling stuff out and reading things,” he says. “But I wrote the whole thing and got it done and I’m so proud of myself. I’m bringing people together with good food without harming animals with that book, with easy-to-make recipes in there, and my favorite recipes.”

All of McQueen’s hard work and dedication over the past few years have truly paid off. He has earned himself the title of the youngest award winning vegan chef in the UK. In addition, McQueen has gone on to receive several awards such as the TruLittle Award, the Compassionate Kids Award, and the Proud and Gifted Award.

Omari’s drive is an inspiration for all. He is a true encouragement to the many young entrepreneurs looking to start a business of their own.

Carl Pei: Creator of Revolutionary Tech Brands

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirms he has left the company | TechCrunch

Carl Pei

Carl Pei co-founded Oneplus, a young cell phone company driven by their slogan: “Never settle.” Although the idea of the smartphone is nothing new, Pei innovated by creating an enthusiast brand. He focused greatly on pricing and quality. Essentially, Pei removed the middleman and used his own e-commerce platform. Another innovation Pei pursued was investing capital into his product instead of marketing. In a Business Insider interview, he explained:

It’s more genuine and efficient to make a good product and have your customers spread the word instead of spending on banners and TV ads. That’s what we’ve always bet on.

OnePlus 1 - Technical Specification - OnePlus (United States)

The first Oneplus phone

Through these strategies, Oneplus has been able to offer premium phones affordable for most people. In addition to accessibility, Pei is driven by community, design, and feedback.  These ideals made his customers feel valued. Oneplus, as a result, grew exponentially. In one year of its first product, the company sold almost 1 million units. Popularity was so high that customers were competing for inventory.

Although Pei gained early success, massive adoption for Oneplus was difficult. The brand primarily attracted technology enthusiasts, offered a single product, and faced a competitive industry. Eventually, Pei pivoted by expanding Oneplus’s offerings. They now provide different tiers of phones, earbuds, and smartwatches. This change, however, caused many to believe Oneplus is more motivated by money than their community.

As of October 2020, Pei left Oneplus to start a new company called NOTHING. NOTHING is similar to Oneplus in that it is branded for enthusiasts. They also seem to care more about their customers than revenue, at least for now. Their only product is a pair of wireless earbuds. Unlike competitors, NOTHING has implemented noise cancellation and 34 hours of battery life for only $99. Support for Pei’s new venture has also been strong, even though he has done little marketing.

Pei’s entrepreneurial story shows how innovation can take many shapes and forms. Although he did not invent the smartphone or wireless earbuds, his products are unique in that they took a different approach. This shows how an entrepreneur can be innovative through their process, application, and action.

Mikaila Ulmer – CEO of Saving Bees One Lemonade at a Time

Curiosity is the birthplace of all creation and innovation. Lack of curiosity limits us in what we can achieve. Mikaila Ulmer, a 15-year-old entrepreneur, not only had the curiosity but had the drive and courage to turn her idea into an award-winning, multi-million-dollar company.

The idea of Mikaila’s company, “Me & the Bees Lemonade”, began when she was just 4 years old and got stung by bees twice in one week. Stemming from her anger around getting stung, she was curious as to why bees even existed. She was intrigued to discover truly how much of an impact bees have on the environment. In preparation for some children’s business competitions, she wanted to combine finding a way to help bees not go extinct with her grandma’s lemonade recipe in her business idea. This is how “Me & the Bees Lemonade” was born. She decided to make her own variation to her grandma’s lemonade recipe with honey and donate a percent of profits to “local and international organizations fighting hard to save the honeybees”. Since she started the business, it has shown unbelievable growth and she now is selling her lemonade in multiple major markets and stores.

Although some may think that a lemonade business is mundane and not worth investment, Mikaila clearly proved this wrong. Mikaila’s lemonade business stands out among the rest. How? She has a drive and meaning behind it. She has a clear purpose and vision for her mission as a CEO. She wants to help the environment at the same time as spreading joy by saving the bees and sharing her grandma’s lemonade recipe with the world. Her passion for the cause and her personal tie to the business is what makes Mikaila unique and what makes her idea great. In the social entrepreneurship arena, we can learn from Mikaila. Whether involving the environment, people, technology, etc., entrepreneurs like Mikaila should inspire us to replicate her passion and courage to change the world for the better.

Mikaila also has a desire to share her story of being a social entrepreneur with others, which she does through speaking at events, leading workshops, and participating in social entrepreneurship panels. She clearly values inspiring others in a way that shows them that they can also make a difference if they are willing to take the chance and apply their passion to a cause. Personally, I am inspired by Mikaila’s story because she is the epitome of young entrepreneurs that achieve success by filling a need that makes a difference and that people care about with no fear. Her story reiterates to me the importance of running with a vision. Mikaila says herself, “My generation-we’re the future. When we grow up, we’re going to be the people who are the presidents and the leaders of the world…If we start at a young age making a difference, donating back, giving back, when we grow up, we can do that on a larger scale.” This quote encourages me that even at a young age, we have the opportunity and potential to make the world a better place. If we capture our dreams and transform them into reality, then there is nothing we cannot do.
